But I've noticed a trend of the really good quality BBQ places in town have a hard time staying open, I don't know anything about the business, but I'm guessing the cost of producing BBQ at this level is expensive. And unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a big market for it around here. But the food here was phenomenal. I especially miss the Burnt Ends platter with corn pudding. Came here on a late Wednesday evening. Wanted to order everything on the menu but i just picked what i came for (and then some)... Portions are humongous! Revival is such a solid restaurant. I can't believe I've lived here for as long as I have without trying it. FOOD: I got the chicken plate with white meat. It comes with coleslaw and cornbread. It was very good, although I envied the choice of the brisket or pulled pork plate/platter. Southern cooking is the reason to check out Revival. The weather didn't allow outdoor seating yet so we cozied up in the dining area. Liked the welcoming vibe. Good mixture of date night and groups of friends at the tables. Since this was my first time here, I had to choose the chicken dinner, southern fried, white meat. It came with slaw and a corn bread muffin. Loved the batter on the chicken. The chicken was so moist and juicy. Great meal. Husband had the pork shoulder sandwich. It was also excellent. Great flavor on the pork and he loved the KC sweet BBQ sauce. It did not come with sides so he ordered a shareable side of Mac n cheese. It had a nice crispy crust on top and lots of cheese and cork screw noodles. Since it was happy hour, we started with some $5 cheese curds. They had a sprinkle of honey on them. Had not had them served like that before and it was a fun option. I would love to give a 5 rating but I knocked down one because my wine pour was a bit ridiculous. I would be surprised if there was even 5oz of wine in the glass for a happy hour price of $11. I also had a blood orange margarita and that was not only beautiful but also very tasty. Wow wow wow. As to be expected, Revival has done it yet again with their newest addition Revival Smoked Meats. A beautiful, open and bright space with a gorgeous outdoor patio. Lots of wood and plants make the space feel like home. The food is absolutely INCREDIBLE. We started with the Drop Biscuits. The order comes with 2 huge biscuits and come out warm and fresh with a flaky, buttery exteriors and soft, melt in your mouth interior. Soooo good. For my entree I went with the Chopped Brisket Sammie. This sandwich came stacked to the moon with a mountain of tender brisket. My wife and I were out on our weekly new restaurant Saturday lunch. We saw that this new Revival opened. Not Revival is known its fried chicken in its other locations, but this is BBQ. My favorite! There were about 15 other patrons when we entered about 11:30 on opening weekend. We sat near the window inside and there were a lot of people eating on their patio on a perfect day in Minneapolis on Eat Street. (Nicollet Ave. in Minneapolis) I ordered an IPA from the QR code menu (The only thing I hated about the establishment, if I am eating out, half of the experience is service) I was going to knock it down a star for this, but I reconsidered. Just be forewarned. I ordered the pork plate with beans on the side with the mustard bbq sauce and a side of the vinegar sauce for dipping. It comes with a big corn muffin, which was good, but a little dry. I had about a quarter of it, but I didn't add the butter that comes with it, but I saw a lot of guests slathering it on liberally. It was good to dip into the lovely vinegar bbq sauce. I ordered 2 IPAs with my meal, and they were both good. I didn't notice that one was in a can, so make sure you order a draft one, if that is your thing (Which it is for me) The pork comes piled high on a slice of white bread and it is super juicy and flavorful. Just amazing! The beans were perfect and not really creamy, but it was getting there. I think there was meat in there, and beans really puta good bbq place over the top in my opinion. The service is basically runners bringing your food and beverages after ordering off a QR code menu, (Did I mention I hate those?) Our dude was very nice and service was quick. I was part of a group of eight that had dinner at the SLP Revival location and we were universally impressed. I had the delicious, crunchy chicken dinner plate (w/ dark meat) with a moist, fluffy muffin and the side of tangy mustard slaw. Others enjoyed the Shrimp & Grits and the Chicken & Waffles respectively. All pronounced their choices well prepared and delectable. For the table we ordered the Fried Green Tomatoes, Tennessee Hot Fries, and the Brussels Salad. All were devoured so quickly that we could (should?) have ordered more. On the side (again to be shared) we had a rich, savory Mac & Cheese, densely flavorful Collard Greens and a number of extra biscuits. Dessert (once more to be shared amongst those gathered around the table) included slices of Banana Cream Pie and a couple slices of the night's special, Chess Pie. A clean, spartan look that I found appealing but several remarked that it felt sterile and industrial to them. We ate at a large table adjacent to the front window so noise was reduced significantly. Further into the restaurant the cacophony might become an issue. The service was cordial and professional. Plenty of free parking in the shopping center lot. I usually don't have high expectations for fried chicken but wow I was impressed. The chicken was juicy and crispy and the half chicken definitely gets you the best bang for your buck. I got the Nashville hot flavor; while it wasn't overtly spicy, it definitely had some kick to it. The pickles were a nice addition to the dish. The pickle is a sweet pickle with a slight tang and was very complimentary to the chicken. Everything is a la carte so you'll have to order sides but I highly recommend the Mac and cheese and the biscuits. The mac was a little too runny than I prefer but it was still very good. The biscuits were soft and flakey; the butter that came with the biscuits was a honey butter that was absolutely delicious. I've ordered all the iterations of chicken they have here: 2 pc, 1/2 bird, whole bird, sandwich, and chicken and waffles. YES it is THAT good, I must order chicken every time I go here. I ordered over the phone and they were only doing takeout when I arrived. I ordered two pieces of white meat - country fried and a side of macaroni and cheese. I arrived about 5 minutes after I was told it would be ready and parked along the street in the surrounding neighborhood and brought it back to my hotel. It came with a couple sauces. One was a Carolina BBQ tasting one and another one tasted vinegar-y. Both good. The chicken was super crispy and meat tender but I wish there was a little more taste to it. Will have to try the Nashville hot next time. The side of Mac was a LOT more than I expected and VERY good. It had a lot of sauce and it was baked so there was a layer of baked cheese on top too. Unfortunately, I was disappointed in the chicken. The breading was on the fluffy side and not crispy or juicy at all. I love me some juicy, greasy, crispy fried chicken but this was quite the opposite. But maybe some people like that kind of fried chicken? Try it for yourself and see. On Saturday night, we placed a pick up order from both of the Minneapolis Revival locations (fried chicken & smoked meats). Biked here on a Saturday afternoon, as it's one of the top rated chicken spots in the city. Not a large place by any means, but there is some indoor and outdoor seating. Was able to accommodate a table for myself without any wait. Ordered the Two-piece dark dinner combo ($15.50) as well as the Cheese Curds ($12). Food takes about 20ish minutes to arrive - piping hot chicken thigh and drumstick, pickles, slaw, and a buttery biscuit. Skin is extra crispy and well seasoned; meat inside being juicy. Slaw adds that tang to cut the oil from the meat. Biscuit has plenty of butter baked in, would have been even better with some jam. Curds are two large handfuls of oily cheese balls with a side of ranch. Could only finish about half before calling it quits. Service does take some time but worth the wait for the food. I've been to Revival many times over the years and I'd say it's a solid 4 stars. Their fried chicken and smoked meats are excellent. I'm a huge fan of the vinegar sauce for their fried chicken. The brisket, ribs, and burnt ends are some of my favorites in town. Special shout out to their pickles and their margarita! I only took off a star because every now and then I order something that really flops. On this latest trip we tried the cheddar drop biscuits which, despite the awesome cheese pull, were a disappointment - dense, tough, and bland. I've had the standard biscuits here a number of times and they're awesome, so I'm not sure what happened to these.. The cheese curds at Revival, however, are the best in the city hands down. I have been to their St. Louis Park (SLP), Minneapolis (MSP) and St. Paul locations for brunch. Although the taste remains consistent at all three locations, I'd say their MSP location is my least favorite to dine at. There is only street parking and the place is rather small compared to the other locations. The St. Paul location is more spacious and has nicer interior design, but is still street parking only. The SLP location is my favorite and it is their newest location. I think it's a little smaller than their St. Paul location, but they are comparable. It's located in a strip of other restaurants, and there's ample parking. There's a bakery next door that makes for great dessert! Now onto the food! They have best chicken and waffles I've ever had! I've ordered chicken and waffles at various breakfast/brunch restaurants before, but they can't hold a candle up to Revival. However, it should be noted that I've never been to any Southern states to try out chicken and waffles there. 1. The chicken here is crispy, juicy, tender, and huge! 2. Waffles are your standard tasting waffles, but they are cooked well (crispy on the sides). 3. The sauce is the most mind-blowing part. I am in love with their signature sauce (Sweet Potato Habanero) and have even asked for the recipe! The texture of the sauce is thicker and not as smooth as most sauces, but I would buy this by the bottle. I drench my chicken in it! It is the perfect amount of spice, with hints of sweetness (from the sweet potato) amongst the savory and slightly sour taste. It is the most amazing combination of flavor and I love joining it with all the other add-on flavors. These are: - Honey Butter: absolutely heavenly! The butter is whipped, so it's fluffy, soft and spreadable. It tastes creamy, salty, sweet and... buttery! - Syrup is syrup and it is yummy. All three of these flavor add-ons can hold a candle on their own, but when you combine them-- they provide the ultimate flavor experience. You get hit with a delicious deluge of salty spicy sweetness with interspersed notes of tanginess. 4. They have some pretty amazing sides. Some are standard sides, but there are some that are done super well. Their sides are a bit pricier, but some are worth it! - Mashed potatoes: Creamy deliciousness. I also love mashed potatoes that have some skin mixed in, so it hit the spot. The only con is that this is not on their brunch menu (dinner only side). - Beer batter cheese curds: The cheese was yummy, but the batter was sweet (similar to the taste of corn dog batter, but fried). It was cool to try them, and they do taste good, but it's not to my taste preference. - Mac & cheese: Not memorable, I've had better. Overall, If I ever have guests that come visit me in MN, I would definitely bring them here for brunch! So tried this place for take out today, it was quite busy at around 5pm which is a good sign. Iv tried the chicken are their chicken place not a huge fan of it. Tasty fried chicken, but there is just something missing still. After seeing Revival on The Daily Meal's 75 Best Fried Chicken Places in America, my wife and I decided to visit it during our short trip to Minneapolis. Luckily, we were able to walk in and immediately score a table on a Saturday afternoon at 1:45pm. The restaurant wasn't too big and from the looks of it, it was at full capacity when we arrived. The menu was pretty basic, with appetizers, chicken, entrees, sandwiches and sides, with the main focus of the menu squarely on the fried chicken. Our main goal here was to just have fried chicken and maybe a few sides and that's exactly what we stuck with. I ended up ordering a 2 piece fried chicken and my wife ordered the chicken + waffle breakfast sandwich. In addition, we ordered 3 sides to share. 2 PIECE FRIED CHICKEN - Yes, 2 pieces is as sad as it looks. Unfortunately, the restaurant didn't have a 3 or 4 piece option, so I was stuck between ordering the 2 or 5 piece and 5 pieces was just too much in my mind. The fried chicken (chicken thigh and chicken leg) was served on top of a piece of white bread, but the white bread was merely just a waste of space on my plate. The fried chicken was really good though - well-fried, flavorful and juicy. It wasn't amazingly great, but it was good. CHICKEN + WAFFLE BREAKFAST SANDWICH - The sandwich came with a fried chicken thigh in the middle, sunny-side egg, white gravy, honey butter and syrup and it was delicious. If you want something to post on your Instagram from here, this is it. The sandwich, which was basically a chicken and waffle dish, was every bit as good as it sounded. Sure, you'll feel like you just ate 10,000 calories, but your taste buds will thank you for it. HUSH PUPPIES - We saw this quite a lot from other Yelp reviewers, so felt it was popular and ordered it. BIG MISTAKE. This was as big of a disappointment as we have had for something we thought would be good. The hush puppies were overly cooked and just tasted like burned wood. MAC + CHEESE - It seems that the restaurant first cooked the mac and cheese on a stovetop and then baked it a bit to get some crunchiness on top. We weren't fans of it though because it was just too watery. COLLARD GREENS - The best of the 3 sides we ordered. Solid collard greens and trademark bitterness hit the mark. Revival was a solid restaurant, but something was just lacking. The fried chicken was good, but not remarkable. The chicken + waffle sandwich was really delicious though, but it's probably something that could easily be made somewhere else. It felt like we were at any typical fried chicken restaurant and nothing stood out. Everything was just a good ol' fashion good. read more
