These people are great. I was having issues with my back light and I just stopped to ask if they could help me replace the bulb with one I had bought from the auto store a couple stores down. They came out to the street unscrewed the bulb that was in. Screwed my new one in and it worked! I asked them how much, he said no charge. Rex auto service is an honest shop, which is hard to find sometimes, and they are very responsive. I went to take my car for a transmission problem. I thought I needed two parts that would end up costing $800+ . Instead they found the actual problem which was a leak and they fixed it up. Saved me $600. Honesty is the best policy! Been here twice, once to get my wheel hub assembly done and once to get a tune-up. I recently bought a new car and thought it'll be a good idea to get a tune up since I had to take it to LA (what else do you do when you buy a new car right??). Well I took it here and it turned out that I didn't need a tune up! Scott was very helpful and, most importantly, HONEST. He told me the car is in good shape and to return all the crap I bought for the tune up. He could of easily lied to me and say that I needed the tune up, plus whatever else, but he was honest and let me know it was okay. There's nothing more I (and I think any human) appreciates more than honesty. Oh and on top of that, he fixed my window! What service! Because of this, I will be coming here from here on in and recommending everyone I know to the place. Just wanted to join in the echoing of how awesome my experience was at Rex's Garage. I brought my disabled car in late Tuesday night and Scott and Jackie were both agreeable to staying open late so I can tow in my crippled ride. They did their best to fix my car (turned out to be an immobilizer problem that only the damned dealer can take care of via new, super expensive programmed keys). They were good about answering my constant frantic phone calls and deserve the solid reputation they have in the community. I don't ever want to have to bring my car back in for mechanical issues, but when I inevitably must, I'll bring back down here to Rex's on Taraval. This is only my second yelp review, so that means something when a business motivates me to write something about them. Side note: I skimmed the other reviews; yeah there are "intense looking Asian guys smoking outside," but hell I'm an intense looking Asian guy who smokes too and I do counseling and therapy for a living. My buddy got an oil change there and they didn't screw the but back on properly and that almost destroyed his entire motor. I once went there to get an oil change and when I checked out my dip-stick they barely filled it up. I KNOW IT'S CHEAPER THAN OTHER PLACES, but trust me, pay the extra 30 and go somewhere else. read more

I spotted Rex's a couple shops down from Kragen's where I was picking up a new bulb for my rear brake light. Though most people said it was easy enough to replace myself I didn't think I had the skills so I figured I'd see if the auto shop would do it for me. There were a bunch of intimidating Asian guys standing outside giving intense looks as they smoked their cigarettes. I was intimidated at first but I stepped inside the waiting area and asked for help and the guy on the other side of the counter said was helpful and said, sure, bring your car on over. I drove up and it took him literally 3 minutes to change out the bulb. I offered to pay but he smiled and said not to worry about it. It kind of made my day that they were nice enough to help me out. And then I figured, the auto garage is close enough to where I live so I'll be back for an oil change. Cheers Rex's staffers, good job. read more

These guys are awesome. My car died dude to an old coolant hose just 16 blocks away from this place. I called in advance and even got a little help pushing my car from the intersection. This place is great ! Jacky is especially helpful. I just got a car after 9 years of not having one. I was nervous about the whole thing, especially having bought an older vehicle. But Jacky took the time to show me what was wrong, shinning his flashlight into the engine and explaining how I could tell certain parts were failing and why it needed to be done. This is without a doubt the BEST auto repair shop I've ever visited. We live two blocks away and they have been looking after our 10 year old Jetta for the last 6 years. I've taken it in with random issues many times and had them fix the issue free of charge. I've shown up at 10:00 a.m. on a Saturday needing my breaks replaced and they got the car back to us by 3:00 on the same day. Perfect service. They are simply amazing with fantastic prices. I was not able to get work done here. The sign on the shop says it opens at 9:30. I waited until 10. Finally the owner came and was pretty hostile about being late. I had originally come at 8:30 because his answering machine does not leave store hours and I assumed he would be open since most auto shops open early. Super fair on prices and very honest. I went in to get my brake pads changed. Would have done it myself, but the lack of flat ground and tools at my place would not make that possible. Most places told me I need to have my rotors resurfaced which would have tacked on a few hundred dollars. I was told I did not have to do that yet and that they were fine. The price was even 5 dollars less than what he quoted on the phone. Looks like a win win. After reading a few other reviews, I have to say first off, they are pretty strict about work hours but that's understandable because they don't get paid overtime. I came here because I needed the battery terminal replaced because it was loose and coming off the battery (which itself was recently replaced). The guys at O'Reilly said I needed to completely replace the terminal so I bought the replacement part and brought it next door to have them swap it out. The mechanic was very helpful at explaining what was wrong and fixed the loose terminal without using the replacement part. They quoted cheaper than Habelt's/Sunset 76 Auto and got the job done without complications. Would definitely do business here again. read more

Thanks Rex for fixing up the starter in my car. They gave me a reasonable time and cost estimate kept me updated throughout the day until it was time for me to pick it up. No surprises. They take most forms of payment as well which was easy. They were also nice enough to stay a little bit after their closing time to let me and their other customers come pick up their vehicles. On top of that if I could give them 6 stars I could, because on my way pulling out they spotted that one of my rear lights wasn't working.
