Don't use this place for DoorDash. If you're not there to see and pick out your own food they'll give you food that's been sitting under the lamplight for days. Especially the BBQ ribs. I received some ribs yesterday that was as hard and crunchy as potato chips. The ox meat falls right off the bone with such flavor! The jerk chicken has the perfect amount of jerk seasoning. Not bland and not too Spicy. I recently came across this place while driving from Southern Girls on Merrick which is apparently closed on Mondays. After driving by 2 or 3 soul food spots, they were all closed! I like to assume its because they were slow cooking on an open pit somewhere that requires 16 hours for meat to fall of the bone BUT i doubt it, sadly. Poor Freddie's is really all about the food as they have no seating and a cafeteria style line starting with meats, then sides, desserts/extras and cashier. The store doesn't look like much and is a little run down looking but that's a sign of good food in my book. Word of advice, do not get in line on a busy night if you don't know what you want. They have signs "WE WAIT FOR NO ONE!" so enough said. They have: fried chicken bbq chicken smothered chicken jerk chicken oxtail beef ribs hog maws ham hocks chopped bbq fried fish short ribs turkey They have a lot more but I don't have all day people. Some of the sides are traditional favorites of mac n cheese, collards, potato salad, black eyed peas, candied yams, string beans, mashed potatoes, cabbage and rice and peas. They also have different meat sandwiches and some great looking desserts. I heard people rave over the banana pudding but my eye was on the peach cobbler. I don't know who is in that kitchen now but, the beef ribs have never been so good and they were good before. The food was delicious. The meat falls off the bone. My entire family has been coming here since the place really was a shack with a grill for the ribs that Freddie used to make. I've been frequenting this place since I was in middle school and now as a married woman, I still come here and bring my husband along with me. They have really great roasted chicken and ribs. My personal favorite item is the whiting fish dinner with mac n cheese and sweet corn on the side. The fish is usually big as is the chicken and they have a nice selection of sides to choose from. The first time the salmon and whiting weren't bad but the sides are not good. I've tried the Mac and cheese the yams and the cabbage it wasn't good at all. Amazing!! Best Mac and Cheese money can buy. They offer so many choices from meats/fish to side dishes to desserts. Line that was our the door on a Sunday evening moved fast. Employees are very organized and the place is clean. Opened 7 days a week!! Prices are very reasonable based on the amount of food they give you, I had my leftovers for lunch the next day and it tasted just as good. Customer service was great here and the food is delicious. We ordered a rack of ribs, a bucket of fried chicken, rice with spinach, baked Mac and cheese, and collards. Everything was really tasty and I even appreciated the woman behind the counter cutting the ribs for us and placing extra bbq sauce on them. I've been going to this restaurant since I was a child. There are two ways I could review this place. One would be reviewing it as I have never been there before. The otherr would be comparing it to it's old self. I prefer the latter. Rib shack has definitely changed over the years. Don't get me wrong the food is still delicious but it doesn't hold a candle to the way it used to taste over 10 years ago. If you want a big, filling meal this i definitely the place to go. the rib shack use to be one of the best soul food places in queens. I went there recently and found that it is far from what it use to be. I ordered the ribs which were fatty and under cooked. I don't know what kind of sauce they use but it isn't bar-b-cue sauce. The string beans were canned string beans and salty. The potato salad had big chunks of potatoes with an awful salad dressing. As much as I would LOVE to support my black businesses, I would have to say that the food here is just not that good. Their mashed potatoes are not made fresh. It's powdered and taste like mashed potatoes from a box. Their mac n cheese doesn't have much cheese in it and it has no flavor. The ribs aren't that moist.
