Rice Paper has been our family's favorite Vietnamese restaurant in Northern Virginia since before it became as popular as it is today. Even with so many great Vietnamese restaurants nearby, we always find ourselves coming back. The team is wonderful and has gotten to know our family over the years. They're always accommodating when we ask for small modifications, and the hospitality is one of the reasons we keep returning. I've tried bún bò Huế all over the area, but Rice Paper's is still my favorite. The garden rolls are always fresh, the peanut sauce is addictive, and their chicken pho is an underrated standout. It's incredibly fragrant, comforting, and one of those dishes that doesn't need to be flashy to be exceptional. The only downsides are the popularity and a couple of quirks. Expect a wait during busy times, and every so often the credit card machine is down, making it cash only. The restaurant also occasionally closes when the chef takes a well-deserved trip, which can be disappointing when you're craving it. Even so, Rice Paper remains our go-to Vietnamese restaurant and a place we'll continue visiting for years to come. read more

This place is so friggin' good. It's no wonder there's usually a wait for a table. The flavors are great. The variety is awesome. The meats are flavorful and tender. The shrimp are plump and perfectly grilled. The vegetarian options are myriad. Most dishes are too big, so sharing is advised. Don't skip the signature rice paper (we like it with pork and shrimp skewers), but also don't sleep on the rest of the menu, from flavorful Noodle and rice dishes to pho and outstanding ban CEO (including a surprising vegetarian version). My only complaint: lettuce leaves that are too small, and the rice paper dishes skimp on the pickled carrot and daikon. Not enough! read more

This is a consistent go to restaurant anytime I'm in the Eden Center. That's saying a lot considering there is so many good options to choose from with a large variety of authentic Vietnamese cuisine to be had. Rice Paper stands out due to their consistency. Both in their service and their food. Every item I've had on the menu has been superb and each time I came back (which is often) it still tastes exactly as I had previously remembered. The staff here is very attentive regardless if the place is packed and busy or if it is slow. Very pleasant area to be in. Be aware, the restaurant itself isn't the largest so there is a wait sometimes but the turn around time is quite fast and there is a lot of shopping to do within the area as you wait. read more

This place is lively, we came for a very late lunch in the afternoon but the restaurant was still packed. The tables are close together. I like this, it feels familial and busy which somehow makes the experience better. Food comes out when it is done, fresh and hot so don't wait for other dishes to come out before starting! I regret not coming here sooner, they have many awards and I can understand why. The flavors of every item were cooked well! All the vegetables were fresh and clean. I cannot wait to go back. Even on a Thursday afternoon it was incredibly busy with most tables full, but I walked in right as a couple was leaving and the staff had the table cleaned immediately so we didn't have to wait at all. All of the staff were incredibly friendly and so quick with placing our order, getting the check, and bringing takeout containers. I think the food here is a bit pricey but the portions of everything are massive, easily enough to split or take home. You can still easily end up spending upwards of $50-$60 for 2 people just for lunch though, depending on what you order. We ordered the Hu tieu hoac mi dac biet with the soup requested on the side and the bun ga nuong chanh. The chicken was flavorful, although a bit dry, and had a nice grill taste. A local friend took us here, saying that it is the best of Eden Center. And after our dinner here, I agree. If you order a bowl of vermicelli chicken soup, you get also a savory chicken salad. I love this deal. The ginger dipping sauce is fabulous. We also tried Nam Vang Noodle Soup, but the "dry" version, meaning broth on the side. The roasted quail was well marinated. This spot always has a line and the wait can be long, which says a lot about how popular it still is. We ordered the bánh xèo, pho, Thai iced tea, and young coconut drink. The pho was decent but leaned a bit salty for my taste. The drinks, however, were on point--especially the Thai iced tea, which was refreshingly not too sweet and thankfully not overloaded with half-and-half like many other places. The bánh xèo came out nice and crispy, though I was thrown off by the canned brown mushrooms embedded inside. Overall, it was a different experience from when I first started coming here back in 2015, when it was my go-to spot. There was a good amount of seating, but didn't feel crowded despite every table being filled. Their menu is large with options for everyone. I do concur with earlier reviews indicating the appetizers are a bit pricy and that with regards to water, they charge you bottled water ($1.50). The food and service was good though! I must admit, I have somewhat of a bone to pick with Rice Paper given the first time I tried to dine there, they had posted that they would be closed until May 10th. When my party arrived on May 11th, excitedly awaiting our dinner at a place that had come so highly recommended to us, the owners had scribbled out the initial "May 10th" date on the sign and rewritten "May 11th." Well, we'll (try to) pay that no mind, as I had the opportunity to try Rice Paper on a separate, later occasion. Located in the famous Eden Center in Falls Church (a market quite saturated with great Vietnamese food), Rice Paper has stood the test of time as one of NoVa's best Vietnamese restaurants, with a slightly more upscale vibe. The exterior is unassuming, but numerous culinary accolades and awards line the nondescript windows. Inside, the space is small yet cozy, with exposed brick walls and fun hanging lights. At around 6pm on a Tuesday night, the restaurant was about full, so our party of three was seated immediately (though the same cannot be said for weekends here, so come early!). The menu has plenty of options for everyone, ranging from well-known classics like pho, bun, and spring rolls, to more adventurous traditional Vietnamese fare, such as roasted quail soup and pork blood congee. Our server was more than happy to walk us through her recommendations! Two members of our party decided to split the Rice Paper Combo Platter ($25), which comes with a plethora of different options for those that want to try a bit of everything. It's a make-your-own rice paper roll dish, with grilled seafood, grilled pork, and grilled ground beef wrapped in grape leaves served with a side of thin vermicelli patties, fresh lettuce, cucumbers, pickled carrots, and daikon radish, all topped with a sprinkling of peanuts and a lovely tangy fish sauce for dipping. The seafood was shrimp and salmon, I believe, which were both cooked and seasoned quite well! The pork was succulent and tender, and the beef was quite unique, wrapped in an herbal grape leaf, retaining a great amount of moisture. The vegetables were fresh and crunchy, adding a nice acidity and textural contrast to the rolls (especially along with the peanuts!). The assembly portion of it all is fun and novel: you dip the rice paper wraps in warm water, and then place toppings of your liking within the damp paper, and roll it up! They also opted to share an order of their Tom Rang Muoi, which was fried and salted shrimp served in shells, with a lovely helping of acidic, sweet-and-sour vegetable salad. The shrimp itself was perfectly fried - not too greasy nor overly cooked, and quite easy to de-shell. The salad was bright and refreshing, with green and red onions, lettuce, and bits of cilantro! Lastly, I chose a bowl of their Banh Canh Tom Cua ($17), which is described as a "fat rice noodle in thick soup with shrimp cake and crab meat." This was really a pleasant surprise...the soup is delectably savory, thickened with a tapioca starch slurry, making it filling and hearty. The noodles are truly fat and delicious, with a bouncy "QQ" texture, soaking up all the complex seafood flavors of the broth. Lastly, the shrimp cake tastes similar to something you might get at Chinese hot pot, and while I couldn't really discern any crab meat, I could taste the flavor in the broth, and they didn't even mention that there were a couple pieces of large shrimp in my bowl! This was quite a generous portion of a dish that you can't find very often in the States, so it was well worth it, in my opinion. The prices are slightly elevated compared to other Vietnamese restaurants in the area, but you're paying for the critical acclaim garnered over years of patronage, as well as the cleaner, more visually-appealing interior. My one big complaint is that they don't serve tap water - you have to pay extra for bottled (so don't get anything too spicy...). Service is brusque but still happy to help out with any questions, the menu is extensive, with plenty of unique options to sample, and the food is flavorful and truly some of the best in the area...I will certainly return to sample some of their other items! read more

This was my first time visiting Rice Paper. My friend and I only had to wait 10 minutes so we were able to get a seat fairly quick. While other people who came in after us didn't get a table until after we left. The menu has a variety of dishes with a somewhat high price point compared to other local Vietnamese food spots. I got the Bun Bo Hue and my friend got the Bun Thit Nuong. My portion was good but the bowl that it came in was not great for eating soups. The food was okay - service was also just okay. The thing that bothered me the most was the loud dance music, it was a little overwhelming to eat and try to have a conversation while loud music was playing in the background. read more

Back with the relatives again for a goodbye meal. Situated in Eden Center, so it was bustling on a Friday night. Many tables were occupied, but service was still quick. The appetizers Uncle chose were nice. Both the chicken wings and the quail had a very similar salty marinade, but nice as a starter none the less. The "Cơm Tấm" (broken rice) is sort of a sample platter of different items you can try on one plate. A lot to eat. Not all of it was my jam, but I chose this dish exactly because I wanted to sample, and go outside of the 'comfort zone', because you never know when your new favorite food will come around. Not mind-blowing, but overall I thought it was a pleasant meal. Chopsticks are seemingly imported from the evil empire of Russia. If you want to boycott them, then use a fork and spoon!!! The catch is, you may not get chopsticks by default anyway, as we didn't, but furthermore, Uncle lashes you with reeds soaked in chili pepper you if you even dare to touch silverware. I was excited to come here on the enthusiastic recommendation of a friend who has lived abroad albeit not in Vietnam. The interior is plain and unassuming. We came about 6 PM and we were quickly seated by a friendly waiter My friend is vegetarian so I decided to join him and we ordered two vegetarian dishes The roasted tofu and the grilled noodles with vegetables. I also ordered a Hanoi beer. The beer was a good beer. Crisp and refreshing. The dishes were a little disappointing. Since they are a vegetarian dishes, there is no fish sauce to flavor them. They brought us some sauces on the side to provide some heat with the fresh chilies in them, but they didn't add any other flavor notes. The roasted tofu came with a side of rice, which was unnecessary, although welcome, since there is no sauce in the roasted tofu to really sauce the rice. Although this is a very simple preparation, I quite liked the fluffiness of the tofu. The rice was actually handy for the crispy noodles and vegetables because that had a sauce that made a welcome addition to the rice. The crispy noodles came in wedges that I thought might be difficult to cut with my fork, but no problem. We were hungry and cleaned our plates, but I don't know that I would come here again as a vegetarian. My friend liked it alright and felt the same. Given that my other friend was so enthusiastic I might come back to try a meat or fish dish. She is not vegetarian. First time ever coming to Rice Paper, I already had an idea what I wanted. It is pretty clued in from the name of the restaurant. I got the rice paper meal that came with veggies and other proteins. You wrap it yourself and then you can dip your spring rolls in sauces. I thought the food was great, really no downsides on that. The only downside of Rice Paper is that they don't have any water and if you do want water, it's just boiled hot water (which to be honest, I don't think I would mind). But if you're looking for water to quench your thirst, you'll have to get bottled water. Service wasn't bad, and when we came in it wasn't too busy and loud. Plenty of seating at tables, I haven't experienced a rush of people, but who knows maybe one day I'll see it. read more

My mom found this place on Facebook in some DMV foodie group and really wanted to try it out because of the raving reviews. Eden Center is certainly not for the faint of drivers but it is definitely even more so on a Saturday for lunch, so make sure to get there before noon to minimize the time spent waiting! We got the com tam dac biet (#18), com ga roti (#31), and banh xeo (#93) for four people, which turned out to be perfect for us (although we do eat a little less than the average family). Portions are huge, which does generally justify the price point. The com tam dac biet was pretty standard compared to what I've had in California -- full of a variety of different pork and shrimp items. The pork was not super tender and they gave us butter knives, which was a bit of a pain because it was hard to cut through. I prefer a slightly sweeter pork chop but it was still very well seasoned. The chicken in the com ga roti was really tender and juicy, with crispy skin, which was probably my parents' favorite. The yellow rice was also not overpoweringly strong but still had a fragrant flavor. Banh xeo was crispy but the contents were not distributed evenly, so some of us got a lot more bean sprouts than others. It was very warm and flavorful. It's perfect for rainy or sick day. I just wish I known the quail was not going to be cut up because it's hard to eat with the soup. The spring rolls, Shrimp pasta wrapped in tofu skin, shrimp rolls, and another fried item (which I couldn't even identify) were all rock-hard--as if they had been deep-fried over and over again. The steamed egg and meat paste was bland, crumbly, and utterly tasteless; it didn't even hold its shape. The accompanying pickled vegetables also appeared to be spoiled. My daughter always orders phở whenever we go to a Vietnamese restaurant, and even she said it wasn't good. My other daughter had Bun Bo Hue and she only ate half. The overall flavor just wasn't there. Other dishes were too salty. The service didn't help either. Our server dropped off the food and never came back--not once. I couldn't even ask for fresh-cut chili peppers. It felt like we were completely forgotten the moment the dishes hit the table. To make things worse, the bill automatically included a 20% tip, with no option to adjust it. For service that barely existed, that felt unreasonable. The prices were already high, so being forced into a steep tip on top of that just added to the frustration. By far the most contemporary-feeling venue I've visited after exploring the Eden center several times. The food is still spot on, but the vibe is different. While most restaurants at Eden have a very mom-and-pop authentic feel to them, Rice Paper feels more like a higher-end restaurant you can find in DC. The physical menu is well crafted, the room is brightly lit and very presentable; it just looks really good. Fortunately the food is just as good. I asked for recommendations and was told about their hot pot. I wasn't hungry for that big of a meal so I got something smaller, including some fried egg rolls.
