I needed a bike with very specific modifications due to my disabled left hand. I never thought I'd find a place that could make a muti speed bike that was fully functional and safe for me to ride. Not only was Richard able to do it for me but he got me a into a much nicer bike than I was expecting for a really good price. He knew I would need a comfortable upright style bike with suspension to protect my limp wrist as well as keep me in control if I hit a bump since my left hand has to be strapped on as soon as I told him about my disability. I ended up buying a 2019 Giant Cypress DX and he made it adaptive for me by putting a cable splitter on the right brake lever do both brakes could me controlled by one lever and he also moved both shifters to the right hand side as well. He took the time to educate me on all things cycling and cycling gear and even looked into ways for my left hand to hold on. He is extremely personable, and I never once felt like he was trying to do anything except help me get on two wheels again, which I never thought would be possible again. Not only that, but the bike looks and performs amazing and he even took the time to coach me riding in the parking lot until I felt safe riding it! This was hands down the best shopping experience of my life. Richard didn't just sell me a bike and he didn't just trick it out for me either. What he did was improve my quality of life and give me back the ability to do something I love to do because of his generosity and expertise!!! I went in thinking I would need an extender for the center bar to raise my handle bars. The kind worker there took my bike to the back and raised the handle bars free of charge. I am a United Staes Air Force Veteran with balance issues along with severe low back issues. I was referred to Richard's by an Orthopedic Therapist while completing my Orthopedic Therapy ( recumbent bike riding). After completeing the recumbent bike program at the V.A. I received my new Catrike Dumont Recumbent Bike. The staff were very knowledgeable about the bike and I was assisted by another Veteran that works there. After my initial sizing and adjusting of the bike to my measurements I took it on a ride around, there's nothing like being able to again pedal on a bike and feel the wind as it whirls around your face and body. I have used this bike shop over the years mostly for repairs and tune-ups. I recently destroyed my derailer and chain, so I brought my bike to Richard's to repair. Although they no longer make the model of Shimano 105 I originally had, they found a very adequate replacement. My bike is now as good as new, and was ready in two days at a very reasonable price. I'm in the market for a recumbent tricycle. I live in the bay area where there are, apparently, no shops with a selection of trikes. While visiting my mom in so cal, I dropped by Richard's. Jackpot! Not only do they have trikes but they have several different brands and, glory be, used ones too! Plus, they know their stuff. Bill walked me through the basics, had me test ride three different types and even showed me one of his trikes in his truck out in the parking lot. All I can say is these guys look at you like you have no idea how to ride a bike, fix a bike or what kind of bike you actually own. I call it "bike humor" Aside from a well stocked inventory of parts and bikes. They always have a attitude, like your interrupting them. The reason for me being at this place of rudeness, I was in there getting a part for my boyfriend that I had a picture of, I knew the name of the part, basically new exactly what I needed and Richard "dick" looked at me like I had no idea what I was talking about... I had brought my friend with me and she was looking at maps of bike routes in orange county and this other guy behind made a comment to her saying " well, you might not want to take this map, it's for experienced cyclists. The ditch is pretty easy for beginners" really?!? Wtf was that about? She looked at me and I had to look away, I wanted to laugh so hard. So, I paid way too much for that part and we left joking about the "bike humor" that we just encountered. Lol they love there job I'm sure.. Won't be back. read more

When someone loves his/her job, it shows in how they deal with their customers. That being the case, Richard must truly be one of the best bike shops around. The guy makes you feel like you have been going to him for years. He didn't try to upsell, just tried to give me advice on what I should get. He not only deals with people well, but wants to educate his customers. My wife bought me the Giant Cypress DX based on Richards recommendations. Although I didn't buy anything from here, have no clue how their actual service is, and really didn't even look at their prices that much - their customer service was excellent. My friend and I came here on our lunch break today because she wanted to get a bike, and this store carries the Fuji Track, SE Lagers, and a few other entry level "track" bikes. They took whichever bike she was interested down off the ceiling for her and made sure to adjust the seat and handlebars to her height before she took it for a test ride. There was no pressure to buy (heck, the guys working there were inside the whole time while she test rode it out back) and this really made us feel a lot more comfortable while test riding. First time customer - mighty happy indeed: I saw several bike shops on Yelp in OC and chose this one because it was family-owned and Yelpers from far away had given it high ratings. There are plenty of bike joints to patronize so when HB and Laguna types drive to Garbage Grove for bike care, it speaks volumes. I'm a newbie bike commuter and not a big-time rider. I needed some tires and a few tools to tune up my clunky Raleigh mountain bike that I bought recently off Craig's List. Montana - he's the owner's son - took my call, answered my questions, and gave me 20 minutes of dedicated time when I finally came into the shop an hour later. This was old-time customer service. The kid was straight up superb. No BS, no grease gun, no nonsense. He told me what I needed to do and what I wanted to know. I spent $46 on a couple of tires and a spoke wrench but I'll be back for certain as needs arise. Places like this deserve to thrive because they provide what I rarely get anymore - kindness and professionalism. Well done. I don't understand the previous two reviews. If I could give Richard's bike shop a 6 star rating I would. I'm a senior and my doctor had suggested that I get an adult tricycle for exercise....and fun. After being told by a couple of very local bike shops that there were none in stock due to COVID, I resorted to Amazon. I quickly realized that putting a bike together would be quite difficult and a neighbor as well as my Goddaughter suggested Richard's Cyclery in glowing terms. When I called, I told them that I had no way to transport the huge box that it was in and they agreed to pick up and deliver for a very minimal fee. Within five days, and over the Thanksgiving holidays, as promised, Richard called and delivered it the next day. The fee was a reasonable $100 and they saved me hours of frustration. Richard graciously adjusted the seat to my height and showed me how to use the gears. Both Richard and the young man who works in his shop were very friendly, helpful, efficient and adhered to necessary precautions. I am 100% pleased with their service and recommend them without hesitation. read more

This is the last place I would go to bring my bikes, but I only go because it's so bloody close. I think it's very overpriced and doesn't have a good selection for road bikes. It's more of a casual riders shop, and that's ok, it just doesn't fix my needs. I've had not 1, not 2, but 3 tube problems here on my road bike. My mountain, I've only taken it there once and it turned out fine. I will say the best thing about this place is that you don't need an appointment for anything. I walked right in and they started right on my bike in 5 minutes. I will say don't have Richard order you anything out of the bike catalog if your life depended on it. I asked him to order me a wall rack 4 different times and give him my number. Never heard from him any time. Now it's a running joke for me if I go in there to buy a tube for a quick fix just to see if he would call back. Good area for parking, but no vehicles pay attention to you when you test a bike out. read more

It's Christmas Eve & i missed my pick up time for my kids bike. Her #1 gift from Santa. I completely flubbed the closing time today. They close at 2PM. So nice to walk into a bike shop that is not generic and sterile, like many franchise shops are today. Richard's has the look and feel of a chill local bike shop like the ones that were everywhere in SoCal back in the day. And even though I only came in to make a small purchase (bar tape,) they were still super-helpful and friendly Also, whatever type of riding you do, chances are good that you will find it here - even recumbents! Took my 3 g bike in to see if they could fix my bent rim and broken spokes. Owner suggested new heavy duty spokes to be replaced with broken ones. I gave him the go ahead to do it. Picked up a little over a week later . No problems so far, only rode one time. Want to thank the staff for wearing masks. I've gone into businesses and no masks were worn. Not sure if businesses are that clueless that a pandemic is happening .or just feel entitled. Well I only will spend my hard earned money on people like at Richards . I stand behind this business and thank them for all the professional service and friendship they have offered over the years. My husband and I have purchased.. 4 recumbents from this shop since 2009. I also have brought ALL of my cycling needs here. Parking is awesome. Prices are super fair and I don't understand the low rating someone stating "overpriced" and has a small selection of "roadies". I do not know what other bike shops you've been too, but they are not the ones like Jax, or Jones here in LBC. I can guarantee you that this shop prices are less, and provide better skilled service any day of the week. SOME may take notice that Richards Cyclery may stock a smaller inventory of "roadies" because they are one of the largest recumbent dealer in the AREA!!! Richard is a wealth of expertise and experience. We can to him for help modifying a rare tandem recumbent bike with an electric motor. It's a heavy bike so the Standard electric motor wouldn't work on it. Richard expertly solved every challenge and installed the system with great care and attention to detail.
