My son and I were in town for a college visit. We were hungry and looking for a good place to eat lunch in an unfamiliar town. We trusted our handy Yelp app, and found this NY Style sandwich shop. We were greeted and seated quickly. We ordered quickly and our server Madelyn was very sweet. I could hear another table complaining to a waitress and manager how the order was horribly wrong. They ordered breakfast, and we ordered lunch so I was optimistic! I ordered the Sloppy Joe: hot pastrami, roast Turkey and roast beef on rye with cole slaw. I asked to add Swiss cheese as well. I also ordered matzo ball soup. My matzo arrived loaded with a pulled chicken, noodles, and vegetables. There was a large matzo ball dead center. It was really chicken noodle with a matzo ball, not the traditional consommé. That's okay by me! It needed a little salt and pepper, but I enjoyed it. Only negative was no soup spoon. No big deal. That soup would have been a meal for most people. My triple decker sandwich arrived and looked sensational. The sandwich was fresh and delicious. Only negative was no Swiss cheese. No big deal. I wasn't charged for it. They offer homemade chips, which were nice, yet slightly stale. My son enjoyed potato pancakes and a hot pastrami sandwich. We had to ask a few times for pickles, and they eventually came. They were barrel style and whole -- very good. My son raved about the macaroni salad! It was a touch sweet for my taste, but he loved it. This place has really good food, but the service and management needs some polishing. I'm giving 4/5 here because our server tried her best. First time to review this long established venue. Just for the record: this used to be the site of the West End Post Office. Since I haven't frequented this place in a while, I perused the menu quite closely. It's still of high-quality but there is one exception: the sandwiches are considerably smaller for the price. Small bowl if pickles were provided. The sandwiches were the smallest amount of corned beef/pastrami I've ever gotten at a deli. We were very disappointed. WATCH OUT FOR THIS PLACE THEY ARE THIEVES!!! Came in and bought two sandwiches, one drink , and one small package of cookies. We were charged 32 DOLLARS. My boyfriend asked for the receipt because he knew something was already fishy. He looked at the receipt and found out we were charged an extra 10 dollars. A bald man behind the counter who was more interested in his phone than customer service, waitresses who act like they'd rather be anywhere else but there. Growing old waiting for a server! Stopped in yesterday around 1:30. Haven't been there since the summer. At first glance you see the bar with all the beer taps. At second glance every empty table (most were unoccupied) had not been cleaned. Sit anywhere - she screams from behind the bar. The tv is on and there is some awful music or static from the speakers. As I look around I see a small family with a baby and 2 other tables in the dining room with older customers. In the front another table with older people. After Waiting I go up to the front and get menus. More waiting. You can see the servers just hanging out and chatting at the bar. My husband waves. We order. Pickles? Yes. Sodas, sandwiches, macaroni salad and cole slaw $2.50 each. We have cole slaw. More waiting. More than 20 minutes to get two pastrami sandwiches with chips. No pickles. Then we get pickles and never get the macaroni salad. She never comes back to see if we need anything. After a lot of waving, I go to the bar to get the check. The sandwich was very good. But the noise, the surrounding dirty tables and the long wait for service and food - really put us off. I do miss Richards! read more

I've been going to Richard's since I was practically a baby. My grandparents and parents frequented the restaurant several times a month, and I've actually had two dinner dates myself at this place. Not exactly romantic, but Richard's is truly a place that has a real feeling to it, an honest and authentic ring that so many restaurants lack. Richard's has a fairly extensive menu that has evolved over the years, but the heart of it remains the same: sandwiches. Also a deli, the sandwiches here are of an enormous variety of excellent meats and cheeses. You can't go wrong with their version of a Sloppy Joe - your choice of three meats served high on tiered club-style sandwiches. They added wraps to the menu several years ago, and they always have lunch and dinner specials listed on chalkboards throughout the restaurant. I tried one of the specials the other day - a tuna steak sandwich with a wasabi avocado spread - and was pleasantly surprised. The tuna was cooked to medium, the spread was creamy and hot, and it all came together in a glorious synthesis of deli meet asian meet latino. Ah, the reuben. This sandwich is literally the favorite of my (now passed) grandmother, mother, and my younger brother. The brisket - served on a sandwich or between crunchy potato pancakes and served with gravy - is to die for. The thanksgiving sandwich, a monster creation that takes turkey, stuffing, and cranberry to bed between two slices of bread. This is the ultimate Thanksgiving leftover creation you can get any time of the year. And every table gets a free pickles, coleslaw, and macaroni salad - a deli version of the amuse bouche, as it were. Several of the employees working there have been there since the restaurant has opened. The employee turnover at Richard's is almost nil when compared to other restaurants. It's nice to have so many familiar faces every time you go in, and as one employee once intimated to me, Richard's is closed on holidays. The reason? Because the owners - Vincent and Catherine - truly believe that holidays are to be spent with family. Overall, the service is some of the best you can get in the area, hands down. Richard's is an amazing experience and an amazing restaurant, truly the Carnegie Deli of Long Branch. If you're ever in the area, stop in and grab a sandwich. You will not be disappointed. read more

I am so pleased that my 300th review is of Richard's Deli. We headed there after a tough morning of reading on the beach and floating in the waves. The restaurant itself is casual and relaxed. Viinny, the owner, showed us to our table and Judy, our extremely helpful server, brought us a selection of pickles, coleslaw and macaroni salad. Then for lunch I had very good pastrami and swiss and my other half had a huge turkey wrap with Russian dressing that she liked as well. Prices are very reasonable. Did you know that Dorothy Parker was born here? Well, not in Richard's Deli, but in West End (as this part of Long Branch is called). And considering she was born Dorothy Rothschild, she probably would have spent many a summer afternoon in this wonderful Jewish deli, sitting in the window by the street (best seat in the house), gossiping with her friends about boys over one of the most delicious brisket sandwiches you could ever imagine. In fact, I'd like to imagine that she was looking out that window when she came up with the saying "I require three things in a man: that he be handsome, ruthless, and stupid." (I've had my share of Long Branch boys, I know of what I speak). So, Richard's Deli... great deli sandwiches. The curly Long Branch fries are delicious. My favorite sandwich is turkey on rye, shore style, which means with cole slaw and russian dressing. The sloppy joe is a similar sandwich, but with more meats. When you are seated, they bring over a little caddy filled with macaroni salad, cole slaw, and pickles. Yummy, delicious pickles. My mouth is watering just thinking of them. I wish they'd open up a Richard's Deli in San Francisco. The service is always great, too. Extra friendly. There's no alcohol there - and no bring your own. So go get a sandwich and then walk down the street to the Brighton Bar or the Celtic Cottage for some cocktails. That's how I do it. You cannot be in this area without having a sandwich at Richard's and drinks at the Brighton or the Celtic.
