Sunset Diner is a cute, cozy spot. The food is so yummy!! My partner and I have been back 3 times in a week since arriving. The pancakes are AMAZING! Light, fluffy, vanilla-y, and buttery.The skillet was amazing. I am not a stickler about how my steak is cooked unless it tastes bad--that was not the case. The steak is flavorful and juicy, paired perfectly with roasted veggies, 2 over-easy eggs, and a lot of love. We went back 2 days later for lunch and got a Sunset Cheeseburger which comes with mushrooms and grilled onion. My partner had the hungry man breakfast. They really loved the pancakes. The burger was JUICYYY! Juice dripping down my arm--Juicy. Roll your sleeves up it's getting serious--Juicy! It was nice paired with half a pickle. Two days later, we were back again! I ordered the Texas Omelette. It was good! Overall one of the best breakfasts I have ever had. The staff is nice, friendly, & entertaining. Burger over cooked !!!!! Over charged menu says $10.49 it was charged $13.99 and no it was not the deluxe and the nasty waitress that took her money upfront had a really really bad attitude and when I questioned her on it and pointed to the menu, she said those are old menus and took them and toss them aside. Well guess what you shouldn't have menus that aren't honoring the price that's how you lose customers and they probably don't care but we never come back because of that on top of the fact that the burger wasn't even cooked right !! Not really a good look to have a nasty waitress, taking peoples money last time we went the manager was there the owner I believe and she was very, very friendly. Not this lady. Traveling for a death in the family to New Jersey and found this little gem, recommended by the Hotel Clerk. The waitress were loud and funny, arguing what to call Taylor Ham or pork roll () and was very helpful with my gluten-free restrictions. The restaurant was quiet, but they had a tv on the game show network that we all enjoyed. The food was good! My cuz got a hot roast beef sandwich with gravy and potatoes and she gave me her salad (Greek!!!) and her broccoli. I got carver sandwich without the bread, and a pickle-but she also gave me some super fresh romaine leaves to make MY sandwich! Their cole slaw was amazing, maybe with a hint of horseradish? In the shore area there were several choices but drove past the obvious ones on Route 35 and thanks to YELP found Sunset diner. Walk in and its a local crowd full of friendly servers and clean and ample seating Before ordering we needed almost 15 minutes to look thru the incredibly extensive menu (pages of selections) I decided on the Texas toast French toast with 2 eggs, turkey sausage and bacon. French toast egg wash was enhanced with vanilla and powdered sugar and Xtra eggy- perfect. Bacon was super crispy and the eggs fluffy. My wife had the pork roll cheese and egg sandwich on a soft roll - perfection! Been going here for 30 years. This is always my go to place to eat when I need to grab something quick. Best local diner you will find. If you like breakfast, go here. If you like pancakes, these are by far the best you will get compared to anywhere else. Lunch specials are always great. It can get busy during early breakfast or peak lunch but there is usually a seat at the counter you can grab. Best iced tea anywhere. Turkey dinner is great. Grilled sandwiches are awesome. We stopped in on the way home from Asbury and had lunch and loved it. The diner has a cozy/homey feel. The waitresses were really friendly and the food was delicious and reasonably priced. I ordered a club and the kitchen apparently accidentally made the wrong one, so our waitress caught it before it even came out and had them remake it.. and even gave us the wrong one in a to-go box to take home which was so nice of her - we didn't even ask for that. We were in the area and asked for a breakfast recommendation. Someone mentioned this place which was a short ride from where we were so we decided to give it a try. We were greeted warmly and told we could sit anywhere. We found the place deceptively larger on the inside than it looked from outside. Their menu is extensive, offering many selections to cover any and all palates. Our party of two ordered the pancakes with a single egg and the Meat Lover's Skillet. The pancakes were fluffy and delicious and the egg came as requested. The Meat Lover's Skillet was filled with meats and cheese and the eggs over easy were perfect and all tasted delicious. It was an enjoyable meal and the staff was friendly and attentive. This is certainly a place for breakfast and I'm sure other meals would be just as good as ours. read more

This was my first time here and I will definitely return. They were a bit unorganized as we got there because the person doing the seating was also ringing up customers. He was efficient but it left someone waiting to pay or be seated regardless. We sat down and I ordered the Eggs Benedict and my girlfriend ordered the Chicken and Waffles. Both plates arrived with huge portions, the hollandaise on the benedict was good and the home fries were pretty decent. The waffle was very light and tasty and the sausage gravy was delicious. The chicken on top was cut ip chicken fingers, but they were very good. The service was ok, I did wait close to 10-15 minutes from when we stopped eating to get a box and then another 5 for the check. The waitress would walk by but not stop, eventually I just stood up and she brought it over. It was weird, she was nice and slightly rude/off putting all at the same time, but lets face it. I will preface my review with this: 1- I have never written a restaurant review, nor cared to, but I felt compelled to do so for the Sunset Diner. 2- My favorite restaurant is "the diner." Not a particular one, I just love diners, so I know a good one when I see it. This is the consummate New Jersey diner. The food, a cheeseburger and a steak panini, was delicious and cooked exactly as we ordered. The portions were huge, enough so that I had the other half of my panini for lunch today. Even after reheating it in a crappy office toaster over, the panini was still crunchy and delicious, the steak and vegetables just as tasty and fresh as yesterday. The fries, waffle and regular, were perfection. The fountain soda was on point. Heck, even the ambiance music they played was great (disco). What really made this diner stand out, however, was our waitress. She immediately picked up on a health condition I have and accommodated me and made me feel so incredibly welcome and loved. There were a few early birds dining along side us, and they were treated lovingly and patiently as well. I almost didn't want to leave. I used to go here with my family every Sunday after church when I was a teenager a very LONG time ago lol. It was called Smitty's back then and the venue hasn't changed the portion size or quality in all that time. This was my first time back since then, although my father has been a regular here ever forever. Some of the waitresses, according to my dad, have been here for decades. My dad wanted to eat here after spending the morning taking pre-surgical tests at nearby Jersey shore medical center. We sat down and had the Ultimate father and son breakfast! I ordered a vegetable omelette with peppers, onions, mushrooms and spinach. They insisted I get a bowl of homemade grits, you know I wasn't about to refuse that! So I very seldom go to this diner, now I understand why. I went in today ordered a $22 taco salad absolutely disgusting. The taco meat tasted nothing like ground beef. The seasoning was nonexistent. They seem disappointed when I returned the food, The girl waiting on me try telling me how this was authentic Mexican food I looked at her and said I am part Mexican. This is not Mexican food are they serious? We both enjoyed our meals and the portion sizes were very generous! The short stack is two large pancakes and the sandwich had a large amount of both cheese and pork roll. I visited Sunset Diner years ago with a foodie friend who raved about it and while I thought it was delicious I didn't go back because I simply forgot about it. Now that I live in the area this place has turned into one of my favorite places. The people that work here are great and the food is amazing! I was lucky enough to order from them last night before they closed and got some amazing food as always. The woman who answered the phone immediately endeared herself to me by answering my questions with "hun or sweetie" which to me is so charming I want to give her a huge hug! When I inquired if they had the chicken Oscar dish she asked the cook (Carlos I think his name was) if he could make it even though it wasn't on their regular menu and he said "yes, absolutely". My fellow diners, I can not recommend this dish enough! The chicken was so tender I could slice it with my fork!! And the taste of it?? Delicious! The customer service was not good. Pretty sure it was the manager. We were A party of eight and we're trying to decide booths or tables and the host was so impatient and rude. He took us to our booths and basically threw the menus on the table and walked of without a word. It was roughly 4:30 with no one really in the restaurant. It was not busy at all. The most redeeming quality at this "diner" was the waitress. The menu is extensive. The waitress had to ask if the Yankee Pot Roast entree was available. I was definitely excited to find that it was. My friend and I placed our order. By definition, a Yankee Pot Roast is "a beef roast that's been braised to meltingly tender perfection, seasoned with bacon, and served with potatoes and vegetables; both are cooked along with the lesser cut of meat, producing a rich flavorful gravy". The YPR at this diner is a euphemism for shoe leather. The cook is obviously in the wrong business. The meat (?) was spread on the platter, topped with canned beef gravy, absolutely devoid of any seasoning. Mashed potatoes and canned peas/carrots served in separate vessels. Do yourselves a favor, order this and use the meat as shoe leather to walk the 1-1/2 hours to a Pennsylvania diner. The waitress ? Kind enough to commiserate and brought each of us a burger as a replacement. BTW, also a poor quality pre-made frozen patty. The 5-star reviews on this place are a joke. read more

They refused to accept their own gift card and stated they don't know how much is on it and I would have to bring in envelope came in. That's not my issue as a customer that they don't keep records of the cards they issue. I was given as a Christmas gift because a friend knew I liked their pancakes, however, I had no idea I had to carry an envelope around with me. The waitress stated it happened before and to add to the experience, the waitress asked the owner who didn't have the decency to come from the back and tell me this unacceptable excuse of why they don't honor gift cards they issue. While in NJ, and staying in the area, I drove by this place everyday. I decided to stop in and give it a try. The staff was helpful and friendly. The food was very good, and so was the price. It's a hit for me. I'll definitely be back. While traveling (for me it's often) I like to cook for myself as I prefer healthy options and it's not always easy to know where to go locally. Why four stars? Two words, sausage links. I am a sucker for the kind of sausage you see on tv...you kno huge and link-like. It kind of reminds me of the links you see tony soprano swinging around at his bbqs and not that crap you get at burgerking or mcdonalds. Win. This does not happen often in diners as most places just make it over ez and tell you to eff off. Pancakes were also nice. I dont eat pancakes much so im mostly comparing to the likes of ihop, but these were nice. A bit crispy not soggy, win. The only downer was the homefries. They weren't bad, but they just werent good.
