I purchased a Chevy Tahoe from Richards Motors. The vehicle is great. They went through the entire vehicle and serviced it as needed (buff out some superficial scraps, brake replacement). The car was very clean and in very good condition. Dave was the salesperson I dealt with and we had a very good, smooth experience with him from test drive to purchase. I would have given 5 stars except that I thought more info regarding the extended warranty could have been provided before the purchase. Upon request, I received a 2-page high level doc before we made the purchase. After I purchased the vehicle, I received the full extended warranty doc and, after checking out the warranty company, am not sure I would have purchased the extended warranty from that company. That said, the car seems to be in really good condition so I'm hoping I won't ever have to use the extended warranty. I have been looking to buy a truck for several months. Been searching online when I get a chance. Saw a Ford F-150 truck with black in colors and the rims. Went Richards Motors to test drive it . We dealt with mostly Dan and Luis for the sale of the vehicle and they were both as helpful and responsive as anyone could ever ask for. The deal happened quickly because the price was right where it should have been. While we were waiting on the paperwork and registration, they were nice enough to drive it up to the graphics company to have it lettered which again helped speed up the overall process. Joe was very quick with the financial paperwork.. in and out of his office in 20-25 minutes. I'm not really sure what else anyone could ask for in a car dealership. We had the pleasure of working with Meghan and Ron, yes there really is a Richard too. All were friendly, pleasant, and very out-going. All were willing to work with us, show us vehicles and answer all our questions. We traded both of our cars in with no hassle. Once we took possession of the car the check engine light went on, I contacted them and they took care of it, no charge to us, even though they didn't have to. My experience at Richards auto was very different to say the least. I read many reviews about the test drive policy, which got me wary to begin with, but I continued to schedule the viewing of a car I was very interested in. I was told I could not finance because I wasn't from the state. That was okay but it was odd that on their website says "local and national financing", which later to find out "they don't update their website". Very misleading. Apparently they only update their site with the new cars and photos (makes sense tight).The next thing was when deciding whether or not to purchase an almost $50,000 car I was not able to not only test to drive it, but also even start the car up unless a purchase agreement was made up. To me it sounds like a waste of time and raised a red flag right away. Our salesperson Jeremy said in order to test drive it that agreement had to be wrote up, signed, and the price must be agreed upon. Which there was no agreement on price because there was no haggle room, the price was set. Would have been easier if they just said that upfront. When asking Jeremy multiple questions about the vehicle, features, and what if I agree on the price but don't like the drive, it was almost as if it was all BS answers. His response "we can still leave as friends", "no point of going back and forth on the price" and "he has been very patient with us" when we were only there about an hour, when we drove 2 hours to check out the car. Fact of the matter is until I sit and drive behind a 50k vehicle that I was highly interested in, I am not signing anything. Isn't the test drive suppose to be the selling point? For a car that was 1k below market price, I would have much rather either shopped online and saved a few thousand for what this "dealer" is essentially doing or paid the extra few thousand and went with a dealer that treated me better and actually let me drive the car before I agreed to sign anything. Jeremy's lack of interest, lay back personality, little knowledge of the car and the dealer's policy's, and smart remarks, did not sit well with me. The "take it as it is" mentality raised a lot of red flags and I'm sure lost a lot of serious buyers in the process. I have never heard of such a policy about the test drive. Bottom line: If saving 1 or 2 thousand dollars is worth the sketchy, unsettling, and multiple red flags of a business Richards is trying to promote, then go for it. Unfortunately I was not able to Risk losing a very large amount of money due to not being able to start up the car when the salesman sounded like he was BSing me from the start. I was in the market for CPO BMW M3 and it was slim pickings based on colors and options I desired. In fact many were 500+ miles away. However I stumbled on Richards Motorcars via Cars.com, realized they had the EXACT car/model/features/year I was after. I dropped a quick note and within a few hours got an initial response from Nick. I felt no pressure in the communications and he answered all of my initial questions. I decided to take the ride out to the dealer (about an hour away), saw the car, looked it over and spoke with Nick in person. I was still looking around so I decided to think it over. A few hours later I called to leave a deposit, got the initial paperwork signed and began the process.. which normally is a rough time. However... after all the legal stuff, paperwork, plates and dealer preparation I picked the car up without fuss, no dealer-add-ons, they even let me finalize the deal with the finance department via phone, so really there is NO pressure to buy. I have to say, in all it was a great experience, the price was right, Nick was great to work with.. and if i'm in the market again i'll give the boys over at Richards Motorcars a call! This review dates back to 2008 when I bought my car at Richards. I was looking for a newish Volvo S40, in Red, black interior, LOW miles, and Automatic with the t5 AWD engine. I scoured the stealership inventories and no one had the exact car I wanted. Even if the dealerships had the correct engine, the color was off, or it was older than I wanted, the mileage was ALWAYS above 40k and the prices were pushing $28k, which was over my budget. Through more searching and research on my part I found the exact car I wanted at Richards. 2006, Passion Red, 18k miles, auto with a t5 AWD. Only compromise I had to make was that the interior was gray, not a big deal at all. I got a great price too, almost 10 grand less than what the Volvo dealerships were offering on a car with twice as many miles. At the time this car was still covered under the factory warranty as well, so that was a great bonus. All in all I'd say this was a very hassle free experience at Richards. I love this car, and I plan to have it for a very, very long time. read more

Just had a great stress-free experience purchasing an older BMW from Richards. They were very upfront about the car because it isn't a car that they would typically sell due to its age and mileage. A manual transmission AWD wagon doesn't just appear every day, though. I know cars and walked in knowing exactly what i was looking for. The salesman was very forthcoming with information about the car's history, and was very accommodating when we wanted a pre-purchase inspection done. The car was sent to the nearest BMW dealer and checked out. A problem was spotted, and Richards was fine with fixing it. Their pricing seems fair for the overall condition of the cars that they sell. Prior to my visit this past Saturday I would have given Richards Motor Cars 5 Stars. I have purchased my last 2 BMW's from them, and had a great experience. I am in a new car every 18-24 months due to the amount of driving I do for work. Their website is the first place I go once I'm back in the market for a new vehicle. I found 2 cars on their website that have the exact options and colors that I want. Saturday I let them know I would be there between 11 and 11:30 as I have a 2 hour drive to get there. Both cars were in good condition, and were what I expected. I wanted to take them both for a test drive as I am still unsure if I want to stick with a sedan, or go SUV. I was told without agreeing to the price, I couldn't take it for a ride. As a returning customer for my 3rd time I would assume you would know I am a serious buyer, and by the fact I drove just over 2 hours to get there. I am beyond frustrated that I wasted 4 hours in the car and an hour at the dealer to get nothing accomplished. No customer should ever be treated this way, especially a returning customer. read more

They had a great selection of cars to choose from. I was able to sample high-line cars from a variety of makes in back to back comparisons. You're not going to be able to do that at any dealership. Finally chose a beautiful car we might not otherwise have considered if we had not had the variety of vehicles to test. I even drove out that day with it to surprise my wife when she got home. When I brought the car back the next day for them to prep it, they gave me a new set of tires when I did not expect anthing other than a shine job. The tread wear indicators were getting close and I expected to buy a set the next year. That was an unexpected plus even though the car was priced best anywhere on the internet for mileage and condtion. I've always driven pre-owned quality cars. Looking for an F-150 with a V8 and every option I could think of. Salesman Vinny was able to give me a trade in value for my FX-4 without traveling to the dealership which is 80 miles from my home. We were very close on money and financing. In looking at the pics I did not see a sunroof. Text Vinny. He assured me there was a "panoramic sunroof." I re-read vehicle details, yup there is a sunroof. Took the long drive up from the Cape via Boston traffic (ugh). Arrived at dealer. GM went out to the truck with me. Initially I was very excited! He pulled it out, I got in, looked up and saw NO sunroof. Sorry, it was a deal breaker!! GM Danny apologized profusely!! I was polite, not upset; only disappointed I took the trip all for naught. Not looking for compensation. The apology was sufficient. Word to the wise. Make sure all the options you want are pictured BEFORE you go unless you live close by. I don't know what the problems are with them. I went there a year ago to look for a QX56 and the salesman couldn't have been nicer. Sure he made a copy of my license, but every where does that. No credit check needed. We looked at a couple cars and he handed me the keys. I took the vehicle out for a test drive alone and we talked when I got back. I ended up buying another car from another dealership, but it was only because they didn't have what I wanted. Now, I don't usually write online reviews of businesses but when I was shopping for a car last summer ( 2012) the reviews of previous customers helped me feel comfortable buying from this dealer. Although there were better deals advertised by various dealers I didn't want to get ripped off by some shady car salesman, so I when with Richards' Motor Cars because all the reviews were great at that time. I purposefully waited months to write this review so that my emotions would not be a factor. I wanted instead to write just the facts as they occurred. Let the reader decide for themselves. I arrived at the dealership, which was way out of the way. I met with Joe who showed me the car I was interested in. Didn't let me test drive it and told me the price was firm. Even though I tried to get a little reduction in price he did not budge. It was a 2000 Nissan Maxima with 80k+ miles but overall good condition. It fit my budget at the time and again although it was in my estimation $1,000 over priced I figured it's better to pay more and get a good car from a reputable dealer than go the cheap route and end up with a lemon. The customer service throughout the whole process was slightly below average. After signing all the necessary paperwork I decided to pick up the car 10 days later at the beginning of the month. Joe waited until the morning of pickup to register the car even though I called him three days before to make sure I could pick the car up at 11am and again the day before to remind him. I didn't get the car until around 3pm. After about three weeks a flat tire, called Joe, nothing he could do, no biggie. Bought a new tire out of pocket, $125. After about two months the car died on me in the middle of a hurricane. I had to leave it on the street overnight and walk home. The next day had it towed to Richards' Motor Cars. Turns out the starter died, talked to Joe, he said because it had more than 80K miles the car only came with a 30 day warranty. $500 out of pocket. Roughly two months after that I was on my way to a after hours consultation with a client when I felt something wrong while driving on the highway, I got off the exit and pulled off the road, turned the car off and tried starting it again but it wouldn't start. I had the car towed again to Richards' Motor Cars, this being around 9 at night, left it on the side street overnight. Luckily for me my client was nice enough to drop me by a train station so I could go to the airport to pick up a rental because that was the only location open at 11 at night. The following morning arrived at Richards' Motor Cars at 8 am. The head mechanic, who is like the only decent person working there looked at it right away although he had other cars ahead of mine but knew I needed my car for work and discovered it needed a new alternator. Talked to Joe when he finally got in and again nothing he could do, not even a small discount for being a customer, $300 out of pocket and that's with after market parts. I was told the manager was not in that day so called the following day and spoke with him, Frank. I was not expecting any help from him but I figured I'd give it a shot, what did I have to lose? Even if he said he'll reduce the invoice by as little as $50 I would have been ecstatic! Not only was he not willing to help out in any way, after all I had the car less than six (6) months and it had been nothing but problems, which by the way, is what I came to Richards' in the first place to avoid, but he was condescending and belligerent. From the very beginning I told Joe I only needed the car for 10 months to 1 year then I would upgrade to an Audi but he never treated me like a valued customer. I noticed the staff being much more attentive to customer looking for more expensive cars. The sad thing is, three months after buying this car, someone I was dating purchased a brand new BMW. I didn't even tell her to go to Richards' because of my bad experience with them. Two months after she bought her BMW from another dealership a close friend of mine purchased a brand new Audi from another dealership. I never recommended Richards' Motor Cars even though he asked if I knew a good car dealer. These two sales would have been Joe's if they took care of their customers. It's 8 months later and I no longer have the car. It's been an absolute nightmare! I am now in the market for a brand new luxury vehicle and guess who is not going back to Richards' Motor Cars... read more

The GM wanted to test drive my vehicle but refused to provide me with his drivers license to ensure he was even a legal driver. If I provide my license to drive one of your cars, then you should provide me with yours if you are driving mine. I wanted a call back from the owner of the company but I still have not heard back from anyone. If you ask me, they seem to be purchasing the cars directly to the company which voids any kind of lemon law upon sale (Once a vehicle is a "company car" in the state of Massachusetts then lemon laws no longer apply for the consumer) that an ordinary dealership would happily help the consumer with. Overall: Horrible experience with the upper management, but the first salesman (Vinny) who helped was very kind and helpful and I could tell he was a genuine guy, go see him if you HAVE to deal with this place. As for their leadership team; awful customer relations and they need to clean house of their over zealous management. I have done many transactions in my day and this was by far the worst experience I have ever ecountered. Good price on the vehicles which drew me into the company . I drive from nh to make a purchase . I asked for the AC to be fixed before taking the vehicle . It wasn't repaired . Didn't think to test it as it was in middle of winter and was focused on heat . First day it hit 70s I tried it and didn't work . I was passed the warranty and still called them due to the time I owned it . Now when I asked what was done to repair the AC the response was idk. No paperwork but they covered the labor. My one star covers that. They lost the deal on my next purchases due to garage being built. They are good at sales but make sure to check tapirs made as that's a sham. read more

I purchased a Land Rover LR2 from them a little over a year ago. It had low miles and appeared to be in good shape. When I purchased (over internet) the vehicle, it had an ADDITIONAL 2,600 miles on the odometer from what was advertised. I was told I could walk away from the deal but at that point had already sent the deposit, plus spent hours at DMV for temp plates. It was looked at as if it was nothing, yet that's a big deal when considering value to the car. I was told it was because the owner's wife was driving the car while it was in stock. Not sure how far away they lived but that's a poor excuse. Anyway after moving forward, I owned the car for just over a year, and had to have it jumped 3 times, and towed two other times. I had to replace the battery, breaks, get a new throttle body, clean out fuel lines and new air filters. All of this was done in the course of a year. Finally, I went to trade in the car becuase it was NOT reliable, and found out at that point it had a bad Carfax. This was not disclosed to me during the sale process and caused me to lose a considerable amount on money upon trade in. I reached out to the sales associate I had worked with before writing this post and NO response. Clearly this dealership gets off on pulling one over on their customers and then not giving a damn when the client feels like they got fleeced and reached out to them. Rude, judgmental, told me to go somewhere else. I called Richards and explained I was interested in a used Mercedes but their website was down. They said, "Come in anytime, we would be glad to help." I arrived 20 minutes later and despite having not even 1 other customer in their showroom, they acted like I was a waste of their precious time. They told me that they are not like other dealerships, are not interested in showing me their different Mercedes, and that I should go to Mercedes of Lynnfield. They also told me that they work by appointment only and I didnt have an appointment. I told them that I had called 20 minutes ago and said I was coming in, and the guy just looked at me like I was lying. He said I should just check out their inventory online so I dont have to waste their time in person, and I told him that I had already explained that their website was down and I couldnt see their online listings. He didnt believe me and pulled up the website on his computer. So I pulled out my smartphone and showed him that I wasnt able to access it on my internet, which was otherwise working fine. All in all, very rude to the average customer. I think you have to be a very special type of customer to get the time of day from them. The Lexus I bought had a few issues that had the potential to be major headaches.The shift knob was missing and a wheel needed repairing.I explained my concerns to a young salesman on the phone and he reprimanded me and belittled me for even having such concerns.I'm not from the area and i don't know this dealer.I asked to speak to a supervisor(Frank) and he was much more pleasant.He fixed all the problems quickly and kept me informed every step of the way.My test drive salesman was Blake and he was very nice.My only negatives were the unknown young salesman on the phone and it would of been nice if they filled the gas tank for me. read more

Negative Experience I was interested in a 2008 Audi A4 listed by Richards Motor Cars in Malden MA and called the dealer late Friday afternoon to verify that it was still available and to schedule a test drive early Sat. morning. I spoke to Rich Fonzi who seemed aloof, but confirmed the car was available and set up an appointment for the next day between 0930 and 1000. I drove 1.5 hours and arrived at dealer at 1000. I was greeted by Rich, who said he would get the keys and bring the car out front. After about 15 minutes of searching and not finding the keys he made a phone call and told me that the car was brought into an Audi dealer for service earlier in the morning and it would not be back that day. He offered no other details. I mentioned that I specifically called the previous afternoon to insure the car would be available. He didn't seem to care. There were no other customers in the showroom when I arrived so there's no excuse for him not looking for the car when he arrived at 0900. Had he been on top of the situation and known the car left the lot in the morning, he could have called me and I would have returned home after only 30-40 minutes of driving. Had he done that and given me an explanation on the nature of the service call the car needed, there was a good chance I would have gone back the following Sat. or gone back to view other cars in the future had this particular car been sold. I told him I would not be coming back. His only response was, "I know". I lost several hours of my time. They lost a serious buyer. read more

Complete LIARS. Please, give yourself a favor and not buy anything from this dealer. All they care is how to screw you over and get as much money as they can. Costumer service virtually doesn't exist, or I would say it would be better if it hadn't existed. The warranty they sell on you is a BIG SCAM, after you pay for it they don't want to hear about it, every time you take your car for a service they will say the warranty doesn't cover it. After 3 years I got sick of that so called warranty and decided to cancel it. Went to purchase a truck at Richards. Pictures online of the truck only were only from the right side and it looked meticulous. When i get there there the entire left side had been hit and bed had been shifted. All of there trucks come from CANADA so they do not show up on the Carfax. I then spotted another truck of interest on the lot. I was told the price of the truck and the price for my trade, however the price of my trade was unofficial because it was not by the manager. It was very low, so i left. The manager then asked if i would bring the truck back for his evaluation. I declined. After a couple of days the price of the truck dropped 3000 dollars. Clearly they were going to offer more for my trade if i returned just to make it up in the inflated sale price. This is a very unprofessional dealership looking to deceive its customers. I purchased a 2011 vehicle from Richard's Morotcars in January 2014. On the return home I noticed a vibration at highway speeds. When I got home I checked the maintenance records and they indicated the vehicle was 4000 miles past due for an oil change and also needed the brake fluid to be flushed and replaced. I scheduled the maintenance at a local dealer and brought the car in for service. The oil change and brake fluid were covered by the manufactures warranty, but the vibration was caused by 3 dented wheel rims and 1 tire that had a large bubble on the side wall. The dealer stated that is was not safe to drive the car due to the bubble on the side wall. The dealer gave me a price to replace the 3 damaged wheels and the defective tire. Before proceeding I called Richard's to ask them if they would reimburse me for the expense. They offered to repair the car if I would bring it to them. Unfortunately, the car they just sold me was not safe to drive according to the local dealership. I opted to have the 3 wheels repaired and had the damaged tire replaced at the local dealership. I searched three months for the car I wanted and came past Richards motors, from the quick reviews I read they seemed like a good place to buy a used car from. Good reputation and have been in business for over 40 years. They made the buying process very easy got me a good loan. The problem is this dealership with along I am sure all used car dealerships do not back the cars they sell. I understand know one can predict what will happen to a used car but I purchased my car from them in March 2014 and had numerous problems which I firmly believe they should have taken care of two of them. They clearly do not do checks on the cars they sell, my battery went one month into it, my AC which wasn't working from the beginning just didn't find out till 6 weeks into because didn't need it at the time. These two things should have been checked before the car was sold to me. Then i needed rear brakes they just barely passed inspection and the big kicker was my rear axle went 10 weeks after i purchased the car. I had talked to Joe several time since i purchased the car just to get some help. I live in NH so I couldn't just drive in to have them look at it, the last conversation i had was that the noise i was experiencing could be my transmission turned out to be the rear axle but they love to tell the story how they have been in business for over 40 years. I sent an email only asking to be reimbursed $300 i think that is very fair since I spend over $2500 in ten weeks since I had the car. Used cars are a crap shoot, but I personally think this country should do something about big purchases such as a car be backed up and it a 60 day warranty is not a fair deal as I was two weeks out of Richards Motors warranty and 1300 miles out of Lexus. I am writing this review because Joe told me on my test drive that he would like the chance to fix something before folks write reviews. Well i gave him several chances and the last one was a straight forward email that I expect to be treated like the guy who comes back every few years to by his high end BMW. and asked for a small amount of money back, NO RESPONSE, I find this behavior unacceptable, if you have been in business for as long as they claim they treat their customers with no respect, I will never return to them for business and hope that all folks looking to buy a used car really do their homework and ask better questions that i did not. I am in my late 40"s have owned cars since I was 16 and this by far is the worst i have ever been treated by a used or new dealership. read more
