I'm 72 and fondly remember this place from childhood through this day. It is largly unchanged over the years, and retains all of its charm from long ago. Entering the shop you are welcomed with a waif of irresistible smells of high quality chocolate that is being freshly made in the kitchen area that you can observe being molded and boxed. They always have a friendly and patient staff who will gladly follow you add you point and make choices from the seemingly endless variety of creative confections. Their chocolates are made right here on site. Every morning, the solid chocolate is melted 100 pounds at a time in an antique copper kettle, tempered, and prepped to become a dizzying assortment of chocolates. Think  handmade creams, truffles, mints, cordials, butter-crunch, caramels, nut clusters, turtles, chocolate covered orange peel, ginger, apricots and pretzels. Want more? How about fudge, white chocolate, barks, clusters, pops, and sugar free chocolates. We paid $38.22 for a bagful of goodies - 2 boxes of hand picked chocolates (sugar free and high test), a piece of bark, a chocolate bar, and two turkey shaped chocolate pops for the grand kiddos. A small gift bag of nonpareils was  tossed in gratis. The store is quite large, so walking around and checking out the goods is quite a fun experience. The only disappointment we had was that their chocolate apple season just ended the week before. read more

Just walking into this place and getting hit with the smell of chocolate us heaven enough! Big chunk of chocolate covered toffee and the (chocolate-covered) caramellows! Holy moley so many chocolate choices. They sell gift wrapped stuff too! To get a representative sampling, I recommend the dark chocolate box. The only item that somewhat disappointed was the dark chocolate dipped oreo. Also, get yourself some salted caramels. You will not regret it. read more

Loved the bridge mix! I had been there at Christmas time and saw them making handmade candy canes. It's a great candy store.

If you love Chocolate and want to splurge you need to stop at this deliteful little chocolate shop when you visit Magic Wings or Yankee Candle it's only a little out of the way but totally worth the splurge. Love third version of a Turtle which they call Dixie's. They come in Milk & Dark Chocolate and you can choose between almonds, cashews, walnuts or pecans. Love the pecans but have had all versions and all are mighty tasty. They make all the chocolate in house and sometimes you can actually watch them because the chocolate making table has a viewing area. This is a must stop when in the Deerfield area. So as I said if your in the area definitely stop and grab some chocolate I can't get out of there without purchasing a lb......but it's worth it. read more

This is my favorite place to get chocolates for my family for every holiday (it isn't Easter without an "Emily" bunny in your basket!) The "Famous Dixies" are amazing (of course) and that is what first brought me to their site but absolutely everything is delicious! My grandmother (may she RIP) used to mail us candy from this place when I was a kid back in the 70s . Mmmmmmmm........ Dixies!! I received a box of these earlier this week as a gift and was intrigued. Being from Boston, I had never heard of Richardson's, but who am I to turn my nose up at a box of chocolate, not to mention something with caramel? And LOTS of caramel at that. These Dixies have a variety of nuts, my box was a mix of milk and dark chocolate, and while I normally don't even like dark chocolate, I ate it. All!! :) Delicious, and I would definitely order these for myself. read more

Richardson's Candy Kitchen is not only a staple in our area, but this chocolate shop is one of our go-to places in the area. This shop has a ton of different chocolate and candy options for everyone. They make a lot of great seasonal items which makes shopping here for the holidays a blast. Some of our favorite items are their chocolate cover pretzels (both sugar free as well as regular), their chocolate covered strawberries, and their great seasonal Easter bunnies. Overall this is a great shop. The only minor critique we have is that sometimes it takes the staff too long to wait on you even though the shop isn't very busy. This is usually because they are boxing up items while people look for items. read more

I've been coming here since I was a kid at a nearby boarding school in the early 1970s. While the prices have changed the quality is still outstanding. Fabulous selection and nice people. A Deerfield Academy alum recommended this place, specifically the "dixie" which was featured on The Best Thing I Ever Ate on the Food Network. It is an delicious combination of nuts, caramel and chocolate. The dixie comes in three varieties of nuts, pecans, cashew, and almonds. I ordered the cashew and almond dixies with dark chocolate. I cannot recommend enough that you make the trip and try this place out. Also, another great reason to stop by is because they've got Herrell's ice cream. read more

The Dixie's are good but I can tell you CONFIDENTLY that is it basically the only thing they make there besides chocolate pops, pretzels and a few other dipped things. Creams and truffles are NOT made there, even though they make it seem like they are. Overpriced and stuffy in there, the girls are all robots that look they same and they are not friendly. Overall, the candy is yummy but it's not anything special and is overpriced. read more

I have a lot of love for Richardson's. It's a quaint little spot along Route 5 and 10. While there's no designated parking lot you can park along either side of their large horseshoe driveway. Like most chocolate shops, you're welcomed by a decadent, rich chocolate smell once you step inside. Most of the chocolate here is handmade. On the right side of the entrance you can take a peek into the chocolate making process, which is fun to watch. The staff is really friendly, attentive, and provide great recommendations. They have an excellent variety of truffles and other chocolates available in your choice of milk, dark, and white. There's also a great selection of other specialty candy and chocolates (i.e. nonpareils, gummies, cinnamon candies, etc) but those are a bit pricey considering those items are not store made. You can sample anything, including their truffles, which is awesome. Holidays are celebrated with themed treats as well as particularly unique ones throughout the year. On this particular visit we came because they had pumpkin, maple, and cranberry malted milk balls. Let me tell you, those are DELICIOUS. So much so that I bought a pound of them I have no intentions of sharing. read more

This is THE place. I learned of them several years ago. They were featured on the Food Network show my favorite things. Over the years I have ordered their Dixies for myself as well as sent them to many people as a gift. This is absolutely the best chocolate I have had. I have dealt with Cathy the owner and she has been wonderful and very accommodating. If you like chocolate turtles I urge you to try this product. I saw the low ratings for Richardson's and had to chime in. am somewhat of a chocolate snob. When I went to Richardson's I expected cardboard taste with tons of sugar. I was pleasantly surprised. The chocolate that I got was at the same level if not above that of stuff I have had all over Europe. It did not give you a weird chemically taste or leave you with a heartburn that made you regret ever trying it. The chocolate tasted fresh, homemade and not sickeningly sweet. I ordered a lot of the Dixies and mailed them to family around the US. The Dixies were divine and I intend to get more if I am ever in the area. I agree that it is expensive, however, for the quality the expense is well worth it. Seeing them making fudge in the shop was a treat. A great New England experience. read more

Everything they had looked delicious but there didn't seem to be the variety that I've seen at other candy stores. Most of the main display seemed to be truffles, with a small section dedicated to seasonal or other confections. We did enjoy the chocolate that we got, but the establishment had an overall feeling that wasn't quite as welcoming as I was used to. read more

The chocolate is excellent, but their website has been down for a number of days at least so it's very hard to find out what their hours are. I stopped on a drive between New Hampshire and New Jersey on a Monday only to find that they were closed. It also means I cannot order chocolates online. read more

I drive an hour at holidays for their chocolates! More often than not, I make the trip the day before the holiday and it's busy, but I have to chime in here and say I never ever wait! They have so many girls behind the counter offering to help you that I don't see how anyone can say there is a wait! They are willing to wrap or package things up for you and I would expect that to slow things down but they have so much staff pitching in that it's amazing how quick they are! I have always been treated like I am the only one in line on the busiest of days (no rushing me at all), so I suspect some of the negative reviews are fake or perhaps during less busy seasons they have less staff and the wrapping and personal service might cause a little wait? Great for gifts! If I'm in a bind for a present, this is a go-to place. The chocolate is great. The other candy is decent, but I would strongly suggest getting chocolate when you shop here. This place is pretty typical of candy places you find in touristy areas. The chocolate is overpriced and tastes just OK, in my opinion. I got cute little chocolates shaped liked turtles and filled with caramel. Twelve bucks a pound. A+ for cute; C for flavor. My husband got fudge. He said it was average. I was considering getting pecan/caramel/chocolates (called turtles elsewhere - I forget what they call them here)., but I changed my mind when I saw that they were $19.99/pound. It their quality is similar to the other chocolate we bought, I'm glad we didn't get them. read more

Richardson's is the best Chocolate around. They have innovative chocolates and have GREAT Customer service. Funny story, we have been going there for years and one day like 5 years into going there, we were chatting with some of the employees and decided to introduce ourselves, when we did 2 of them told us that they had made up names for us: Phil and Susan. We thought that was really cool and we joke about it when we go in. When I went in here, the smell of chocolate was so amazingly overwhelming that I became totally varklempt. I could barely speak. I was shaking, on the verge of hyperventilation. I paced around the candy shop, my heart aflutter! What did I want? Chocolate covered pretzels? FUDGE? What DID I want? And then I saw it: chocolate covered graham crackers. I purchased two: one dark chocolate and one milk chocolate. They were by far the best chocolate covered graham crackers I've ever had in my whole entire life. read more

I love Richardson's maple creams and coffee creams which they carry in both dark and milk chocolate. The part I like the best is you can pick out exactly what you want in your box of chocolates from the huge assortment in the cases. I ordered the Dixie sampler as a gift for my wife. Because I waited I paid more for shipping to Chicago then I paid for the chocolates. I must tell you, this is simply the BEST stuff ever! I am not typically a turtle/Dixie guy. These are "wicked awesome", and in Chicago we don't even talk like that. This stuff is a must. Be smart, order two boxes, they Won't last you very long. We stopped in here on our way back from the Yankee candle factory, what a great find! They had fudge samples at the counter and my daughter and I couldn't resist we were not disappointed!! I cannot believe I lived in the Deerfield area for 6 years (UMass grad!) and did not have this chocolate... received a box as a christmas present and it is such a nice change from those typical (read: boring) chocolates you get and regift at the holidays. The chocolates are creative and taste like rich homemade truffles, not candies that have been sitting on the shelves. We always take a quick exit off of I-91 whenever we are in this area for a quick trip to Richardson's. The candy is fantastic here and never disappoints. In the summer, you can get a frozen banana and it is dipped into the chocolate of your choice right in front of you. Their milk and dark chocolates are delicious. Their fudge, peanut butter assortment, and the Dixies are family faves. We recently tried the dark chocolate mint patties at Christmas and they were great. Candy is exceptionally good. Prices are very high but worth it for special occasions. Service is only mediocre however - we were the only customers in the store with several employees working, but they refused to allow more than one employee to help us at a time because "it's too confusing if more than one person helps you". I love walking into old fashioned candy kitchens and inhaling the scent of chocolate deeply - it just does my heart good. Everything is beautifully displayed, creating irresistible temptation. The food network raved about the Dixie's here.....and I agree they are the best thing on the menu. Crisp fresh toasted nuts, gooey caramel - rich chocolate (get the dark). But the other chocolates I sampled were way overly sweet. The dark chocolate does not have that bitter finish that I crave....way too much sugar, and the cream fillings are over sugared as well. Yes, it is all very expensive....but hand dipped chocolates are quite labor intensive - I know, I've done it. I dipped the best butter crunch I have ever tasted anywhere in my life- at Mother Myrick's in Manchester VT. Richardson's butter crunch does not hold a candle to it. The nuts are too clunky & too salty, the brittle does not have that perfect crisp, buttery texture...and again, the chocolate is too sweet. They feature Herrel's ice cream, which has a good creamy texture, but was so lacking in flavor and choc. bits with the black raspberry flavor I tried - I almost felt like giving it back. The ginger ice cream fared a little better, but lacked the bits of ginger pieces I crave. Hubby's orange chocolate on the other hand was delish- I highly recommend it. It is worth a strop to try that flavor if ice cream and the dark chocolate Dixie's. And just to see the place is a treat. read more
