This is one of my favorite small grocery store.Small in size but well stacked, with fresh meats and tasty deli section.. I particularly like smoked Salmon & European style breads, always coming back for the Polish sweets and good selection of international wines. The meat counter always has great kabanosy and there is always a large selection of breads and Eastern European beer. Be sure to grab some kvass (it's hard to find, but they have at least 3 kinds!). Hands down the best fresh perogies in town! Yes, fresh not frozen! You get them at the deli counter. Their hot bar also has the best mashed potatoes that are cheaper than at the grocery store and 10x more flavorful. Great prices for deli meats and cheese with a nice selection of polish sausage. Homemade pierogi, just like mom my use to make! I also enjoy the homemade soups found in the back, a great bang for your dollar. Be patient, most employees are from Europe with an accent but they are super helpful. They also have some produce if you need to grab something quick. I really can't recommend this pace enough. It's *the* place to go to for all my Polish food needs. Their kielbasa and kabanos cannot be beat! Excellent hams in the deli, Polish and Ukrainian package and baked goods of every description, and a good selection of beers and liquor.

Since Andy's Deli closed this has become my convenient destination to stock up on eastern European specialties. The place isn't much to look at from the outside but they sure do cram in a lot of merchandise into the store almost to the point of being clausterphobic. The produce section is small but adequate for essentials. But one doesn't come here for the produce - I want the best Eastern Europe has to offer: smoked meat, alcohol, cheesecake and chocolate. Yum. In the chocolate aisle I recommend the Milka and Wedel chocolates. There's a cooler in back and my favorites from there are the mushroom salad and leek salad. They have assorted soups at 99 cents which vary day to day and may include some uncommon choices such as sorrel, cauliflower and Ukranian borscht. They bake their own bread but also have a selection from various bakeries. They carry a wide range of beers of imported beers (Polish, Ukranian, Russian, Czech, Lithuanian). A buck and some change will get you a half liter bottle. Go ahead, be adventurous. Pick a beer at random. The non beer offerings lean toward favorites of the eastern European clientele (vodkas, vermouth) and wines from the former Soviet republics. I understand 2008 was a good year for muscats from Moldova. The Armenian brandy ("cognac") is $14 per bottle. I noticed they have a refrigerator up front behind the counter with caviar in it but I've never been adventurous enough to try anything from it. At the deli counter, there are always plastic containers of whatever they cook up that day (pierogi, fried fish, blintzes). Recent finds: salmon pierogi, fried breaded eggplant, mushroom filled small pierogi (uszka) and leek salad. Four stars for the selection and prices plus an extra star for the people watching and general sensory overload of the place. Update: I always pop in to see what new beers they have. Latest find was Obolon Bile, a Ukrainian beer which is not bitter as the name suggests but is actually a wheat beer. Also, Larine Grand, a Belgian beer, which despite coming in a green plastic bottle and costing 99 cents was acceptable..

Best place in the neighborhood for Eastern European fare. Deli meats are at least 40% less than big grocery.

Great lunch/breakfast spot with fast service and simple/fresh sandwiches…read more The oven roasted turkey sandwich was great, tasted like something my grandma would make me (in a good way). Will be back.

I really want to like them so much more than I do. If there were a continuum from hipster deli…read more(think Mile End) to traditional deli (Manny's, 2nd Avenue, etc) Schneider would on the hipster side of center. Two of us shared a half pound pastrami on rye with a side of hash browns. The rye was pretty decent but the pastrami was sliced far too thick and the meat was lean. That is not a good thing when it comes to pastrami and I attribute the lean meat to the deli catering to its hipster-ish audience. Although the flavor was decent, the sandwich was dry and difficult to eat. We disagreed on the generously sized pickle. One of us thought the flavor was just right, the other not so much. We both agreed on the hash browns. It's a no-go. They were well fried but entirely unseasoned. I understand the lack of schmaltz but there was no onion or salt or anything else. Waffle House has nothing to worry about. (IYKYK) Service was fast and polite. The space is tiny, but it works. Prices are okay for this area but if you want traditional deli in Chicago, go to Manny's.

On a busy Saturday, I decided to order ahead for myself and my hangry kids. We ordered Italian,…read moretuna and prosciutto subs. We also threw in an order of tiramisu and the large canoli. We were quoted a time of 20 minutes out. We arrived a little early and the gal at the counter told us it would be a few minutes. She called out when ready and sat at one of the tables in the front to eat. Each sub had a decent amount of filling. While we each offered the smallest subs, we were plenty full when we left. We enjoyed our subs and now have a place to add to our list for a new quick lunch. For the store itself, they have some odds and ends but many Italian staples. The counter and deli had a steady flow of customers in and out.

As I parked this large Chevy Suburban parked in front of me. As I sat in the car & saw one person after another unloaded & head towards Potbelly. In all I counted 8 guys unloading from this Suburban. & head to Potbelly. I'm like oh hell no. That's when I saw CONTE DI SAVOIA @ 1438 W Taylor Street on the north side of Taylor Street. I decided to cross over & check out this old world Italian Deli. Conti Di Savoia is small Italian grocery store w/an Italian deli that has w/outstanding & inexpensive sandwiches. When I went in there was a line of people waiting @ the deli counter waiting to place their order. I must have looked confused because the owner directed me & told the line started on the other side towards the back of the store. What I found was an awesome of fresh handmade sandwiches for a very reasonable price. I ordered an 8" pastrami w/mozzarella cheese, shredded lettuce, tomato, red onions, mayo, & Italian oil drizzled. What I got was an awesome inexpensive sandwich loaded with/fresh ingredients. Absolutely delicious. After I got my sandwich the owner (I introduced myself (I think his name was Mike) rang up the sandwich. He said they have been there for 35 years. There's also a small dining area in the front of the store where I sat & devoured my sandwich. Like I said this is small Italian store w/a nice selection of products like meats, cheeses, pastas, wine, olive & deli items. I throughly enjoyed finding Conte Di Savoia. The pastrami sandwich was awesome w/a generous portion of pastrami & toppings for a reasonable price. I'm the type of person who who loves finding new places to eat. Most times unless I find great food & reasonable prices I won't go back but I feel like I found a real gem W/Conti Di Savoia. I WILL DEFINITELY BE BACK AGAIN.

It came as a great recommendation! We didn't have it for a while since we live the low-carb life but were thrilled to learn they do a "sub in a tub". I love their tuna salad/sub. Their bread is soft, back when I could eat it. They don't overfill it with mayo either and add some mild peppers or hot on request. I like that they don't have onions at the deli so it doesn't overpower everything else. My husband typically loves the club. They rolled a generous amount into a container and I used scissors to quickly and easily cut it. It was a perfect lunch and I have enough for another tomorrow! For $8, or $11 for a generous tuna scoop, you can't beat it. Staff is also quick and friendly at the deli, as well as checkout.
