We were greeted w/warm friendly smiles from an extremely cordial staff. The ambiance @ a high-top in the lounge was perfect on our last night in town. The meal was prepared perfectly & served hot. We put a hurtin on the warm home made potato chips, sweet potato soup was very tasty & seared ahi tuna was delicious. I made my order by phone. They did not pass my order to the kitchen until I arrived there 25 mins later (I was told it would be ready to pick up by this time). So I have to wait for another 15 minutes to pick up my order. No apology, no greetings. The hostess was rude and arrogant (WTH!). I would give it a zero rate if possible!! read more

We were not told about any specials, if there were any. The food was pretty good, although they were less than generous with the salad dressing. For starters, we made a reservation online on their website, only to find out that it wasn't working, so we had no reservation when we got there. They explained nicely and were able to get us a table in the bar witihin 20 minutes. The chips they served taste like the oil was ransid. Our husbands gobbled them down covered in the dipping sauce and didn't notice, but my friend and I couldn't eat them. I ordered Cedar planked salmon, and neither my friend nor I caught the fact that the primary ingredient was grits. I know that's popular in this part of the country, but it would be refreshing for someone to offer light seafood without that heavy, rich side (or bacon maple mashed potatoes or Risotto). The salmon was ok but very rare. I eat sushi so I was able to eat it but it wasn't what I was hoping for in a cooked meal. To start...I want to make sure that I praise the service we received before commenting on our meal. Our waitress, Shannon was extremely personable and engaging. She obviously enjoys her job! We ordered the filet with Brussels sprouts and Potatoes Au Gratin. The steaks and Brussels sprouts were tasty. I have to say...the Potatoes Au Gratin were by far the most UNAPPEALING thing I have ever been served!!! The potatoes themselves were grey in color!!! DISGUSTING. My husband and I celebrated his birthday here. Both of us decided on the Surf and Turf special. The filet mignon was wonderful. It was well-seasoned and melt in my mouth tender! I also liked the mixed vegetables that were served with the Surf and Turf. They were julienned and stir fried and well seasoned. For dessert, my husband chose the creme brûlée and I had the flourless chocolate cake with a side of ice cream. Yummy! The service was excellent; attentive but not hovering or rushed. Disappointing food. I've eaten here twice and both experiences were poor. Food was bland but salty and lacking eye appeal. Perhaps the steaks are a better choice than the seafood? Decor is elegant but dark. Members of my group kept having to open the blinds in order to see. We visited Rick Erwins for our anniversary dinner and they made it extra special for us - including a card signed by all of the staff. I highly recommend the 3 course price fix menu as dessert is a must. I had the salmon and it was heavenly. I finished my meal with the creme brûlée and it was the perfect ending to a perfect meal. Worth a try if you're looking for a nice dinner. We went for the 3 for $42 because of other yelpers that complained about not getting your money's worth. I got seafood soup (very salty), scallops (awesome!) and creme brûlée (pretty good). My fiancé got salad (it's a salad), filet mignon and shrimp (very good!) and key lime pie (awesome!). We had a very knowledgeable server that answered all of our questions politely. We ate in the bar and ordered from the main dining room menu. The food was terrible. I mean everything I ordered was awful. The calamari was drenched in a sweet sauce and soggy. The fried chicken dish claimed to have been marinated for 30 days. Still don't know what that means but it was way too salty and lacked any distinct flavor. I'm not from the south but I know collards and covering them in some sweet sauce without any potlicker is a sin. We came for the steak which is a family favorite and we thought their specialty. The cut itself was impressive but the cooking treatment of it was lackluster given the reputation and cost. All in all mediocre food and way way way too expensive. read more

I have never never written a bad review for any restaurant but I am doing so now. Five of my family members took me thEre for dinner on a recent Friday night to celebrate my retirement. Service and atmosphere were excellent. However, four of our five entrees were cold. We didn't wantt to ask for everything to be sent back because it would have ruined the mood. Plus my elderly mother was with us so we didn't want to keep her out too late. The next day I sent them a detailed message via their website to make them aware. I told them I felt like they should know so they could be more careful with future customers. I also asked for the courtesy of an acknowledgment of my feedback. That was two weeks ago and I never received any type of response. We spent over $400 on dinner, including the tip, and not even the courtesy of a response. I would have at least apologized and offered a discount on the next meal. This is supposed to be a top notch upscale restaurant. And no response. One might say they never read the message I send, which was through a webform on their website under CONTACT US. No excuse. Especially not for a first class restaurant. We celebrated our 39th wedding anniversary at Rick Erwin's Clemson. This is the second time we've dined there. The restaurant is exceptional. The entire staff was professional, efficient and courteous, obviously well trained.The restaurant has a relaxed atmosphere while still appearing sophisticated. The server was attentive but not annoying. The orders arrived in a timely fashion and the food was excellent. They have an exceptional wine selection. The menu has a nice selection of appetizers along with a wide range of entrees. I highly recommend the crab cake appetizer. My wife had a filet and I had the mixed grill. Both dishes were prepared perfectly. We were very pleased with every aspect of our visit. This is not an inexpensive restaurant, but the experience was well worth the cost both times we've been there. read more

This was our experience at the new Rick Erwin restaurant in Clemson. We have been to the two others in Greenville and the atmosphere, which in our opinion, are much more inviting with a friendly feeling. The service tonight couldn't have been better. Our server, Victoria was very friendly, helpful and efficient. The grouper was good...nothing to write home about, the lobster tail was excellent, as was the calamari. Unfortunately the "bone-in" streak was a disappointment. So much so that to compensate our displeasure we were offered a complimentary dessert. The key lime was to die for. Went straight to my waistline. We will try the place again. But next time we will check out the bar area. They need to also do better on selecting music to dine by. I've had some good steaks here, but this last time on Valentine's Day, my husband and my meal was very poorly prepared. The steak tasted like and had a texture like it had been heated up in the microwave and our side of asparagus was room temperature by the time it got to our table. We can't say enough good things about our evening at Rick Erwins. It was an A+ experience from start to finish. My husband and I were traveling from Tybee Island to Clemson to pick up a puppy from a local breeder. I researched where to eat and chose Rick Erwins. I absolutely made the right choice! I have always believed that an evening out starts with making the reservation and that was the case with Rick Erwins. I requested a quiet table since I have some hearing issues and the delightful young woman who made the reservation assured me that she could accommodate the request. We were seated at an end table and, while the restaurant was jam-packed at 7:15 on a Saturday night, we could easily carry on a conversation while enjoying our drinks and dinner. The service was outstanding, the restaurant's atmosphere and interiors are lovely, the food was delicious and the craft drinks, suggested by our knowledgeable server, were on the mark. It is obvious that the staff are all well trained and that they enjoy their jobs. Having worked 35 years in the hospitality industry, I appreciate and acknowledge top notch service and that is what we received at Rick Erwins. If and when we return to the Clemson area, we will definitely eat at Rick Erwins again. read more

Prior reviews panning the crab cakes, seafood dishes, she-crab soup, and slow service were all debunked in one trip. I had scallops (big, tender, and well-prepared and nicely plated). My wife had surf and turf with crab cakes, and her steak and crab cakes were both wonderful to her taste and mine. My she crab soup was good as well. Pricing was more than appropriate for the atmosphere and food quality. The lighting was appropriate for a fine restaurant, and there were no other patrons dressed in flip flops and cut-offs. Celebrating my parents 50th wedding anniversary here. Chris and Donna were great servers and very attentive. Everyone enjoyed their meal however my father was served last and his cheese grits were cold. His lamb chops came out late and were more of an appetizer size than entree, especially for the price we paid. Disappointed. Chris rushed to get them and apologized for the delay. However they did give him a happy anniversary cookie but left my mom out?Eke! That did not go over well. Disappointed again. I would not recommend the ahi tuna. The mashed potatoes were too salty with my surf and turf. Main dining hall is took dark and we requested to sit in the back room as my parents can't see or hear we'll, but we were sat here anyway. My wife and I had dinner here tonight and I must say it's an outstanding, if not the best, addition to the nicer dining venues in Clemson. The decor is simple, elegant, and understated and the (mostly college student) staff is welcoming and courteous. After a slightly longer than expected wait to be seated everything was sublime from there. We started with the calamari as an appetizer, which was perfectly fried and seasoned, accompanied by both a sweet Thai chili and a mayo-type sauce. Afterwards we were served a steaming hot, round loaf of bread with an oil and vinegar based dipping sauce. We then split the gourmet greens salad which was a perfect, light prelude to our sea bass and grouper entrees. All this with a couple of glasses of Sauvignon Blanc and a cup of coffee following the meal for about $100. Every dish was excellently prepared and the tastes all blended together exquisitely. The service was exceptional and the timing of the various dishes were served at ideal intervals. Highly recommend REC! read more

I've been looking for a good steakhouse in the area for a long time. My first trip to this restaurant was very underwhelming. I do not understand why some chefs feel the need to over season every cut of beef. A good steak only requires a little salt-and-pepper and the right amount of heat. The steak was so over seasoned I actually had to ask for Worcestershire sauce just to cover up the flavor. It's a shame when you have to cover up the taste of a prime piece of beef. The Caesar salad was good. Both of the sides we tried were good. The wait staff was very courteous, but slow. I suspect they might be pulling their staff from Clemson University's student pool. Despite the restaurant not being very full, we were placed at a table where my chair stuck out into the rest of the restaurant. At least a half-dozen times during our dinner, one of the waitstaff came through and bumped me with his or her rear end, as they tried to squeeze between my chair and the person sitting directly behind me. The waitstaff always apologized, but at no point should you ever bump a patron. Just walk around where you don't have to touch anyone. The waitstaff also doesn't seem to understand the difference between bottled water and tapwater. I ordered Fiji, and the person I was dining with ordered tapwater. At various times during our dinner, one of the waitstaff came through and crossed up our water, pouring my Fiji into his tap and later pouring a bucket of tap into my Fiji. All in all, we ended up getting two over seasoned steaks, two salads, two sides, some water, and two desserts for $180. read more
