    Onion Rings

First time ordering from here and it was mostly positive. Portion sizes were huge and the food was tasty . Also prices were reasonable and food arrived in a timely manner. Just one negative: no ketchup or any condiments in the bag for the onion rings.

Food is made fresh. Drive thru is a bit slow but expected. This place is usually busy. One of my picks for a quick bite to eat.

Here is an update picture of the menu for those who want to see what you can get from the menu and the prices. Great place to eat.

    Beef burrito

Ordered a beef burrito. I'm thinking it was ground beef since carne asada was also on the menu. They stated it was beef, chili and cheese. First bite was disgustingl, I was so hungry that I attempted to tolerate it and I couldn't do it. I'm gonna have to start preparing my own food way more often, $10 down the drain.

A juicy burrito. Don't tilt it too much.

It must be at least 5 years since I last visited Rick's. I remember when they first opened in Gardena back around 75' or 76'. A good friend from high school was one of their first hires. Obviously, the building has seen better days. Every now and then, I wonder if they're still around and low and behold, they've managed to survive. The food isn't as good as I remember but surprisingly, it was pretty good and they've kept their prices within reason as well. I have great memories of their combination burrito so I decided to see how well they're being made these days. It's really unusual because it's a juicy burrito. Instead of grilled pieces of carne asada, they use what almost seems like a soupy beef stew with bits of lettuce, onions, bell peppers, and tomatoes. It actually works pretty well. What was missing was the delicious salsa they used to use in the old days. This left my burrito a bit bland and boring. Still, it was acceptable. I ordered the chorizo plate for my wife and we enjoyed the taste even though it was a bit heavy on the salt. I appreciated the fact that the chorizo was drained of excess grease unlike some other places in the area where the food floats in orange goo. I was pleasantly surprised to find the bill was less than $20 so props to Rick's for that. It was nice walking down memory lane but it's sad to see how bad the neighborhood has become. Restaurants in the area close early because of the crime you read about in the police blotter that occur at night. It's fairly common for people to get robbed at gunpoint or knifepoint after 10 so frequenting businesses like the Lady Luck card club or filling up your car with gas might not be the best idea. Daylight hours are fine but unless you're already in the area, I wouldn't drive out of my way to try Rick's. By the way, how do they avoid problems using In and Out in their name? Some things remain a mystery.

    Turkey Burger
    Sean W.

This whole in the wall with a drive thru was always known to locals as having a really good hard shell taco. However, I was pleasantly surprised how good the Turkey burger was. Really fresh and flavorful. Especially when your pressed for time and need a drive thru.

    Steak and eggs

Steak and eggs with toast -- only $14.31 with tax. A solid and satisfying breakfast option.

High marks for their charbroiled burgers. They are meaty and the char is so tasty. Go for the dbl cheese burger.

The last time we were here, it was during a busy lunch and both the service and the food were below par. But tonight, it wasn't as busy and our server, Geovani, was excellent. First, we were quickly greeted and asked to select our table (since they were not that busy). Since there was only two of us, we picked a table for two. But, after we decided that we would split an appetizer and an entree, the table for two became way to small way too quickly. Geovani jumped right on this, suggesting we move to a larger table. He helped us move everything over and, voila, we were able to stretch out and relax and enjoy our meal. We started with the pear and blue cheese salad and, wow, we could have just ordered this, split it, and we would have been full. Very flavorful, generous portion that is definitely big enough to share. We also ordered the Sausage & Leek Fettuccine and I was definitely not thinking. Totally forgetting that leeks are part of the onion family (and I have a sensativity to onions). Once the dish arrive, I immediately noticed the similarity and was slowly trying to pick them away from my portion. Once again, Geovani came to our rescue. He asked how everything was and I told him I made a mistake (noted above). He quickly volunteered to have the kitchen make it again without the leeks. I asked, "Are you sure?", and he immediately said yes and removed the dish. Very shortly after, he returned with the "onion sterile" dish and it was wonderful. Both of us were so full you could have rolled us out the door. Good thing the parking garage is so close so we could just hop in our car and go home. Time to loosen the belt! ;) In a week where we have had some personal issues, it was so nice to be treated so well and received such a great tasting meal. Hope you get the time to stop in and I hope you get Giovani to answer all your questions and issues. Enjoy!!!

Waitress was a bit brusque. Ok. We all have bad days. But she never checked on us: MIA. I needed a refill. Waited and waited she was nowhere to be found. Busboy delivered our food. We asked for an extra plate and a refill. We never got either. Still no waitress. Had to go to the bar to get the plate and the refill. What really soured me was the bartender/manager's attitude. I told her the service was not good. She grudgingly asked what was wrong. I explained. She responded defensively that they had a busy day. No apology, which really goes a long way. She came back to check on us, but was surly. I would like to think that today was a one off. But the service was a big fail: from the very beginning with waitress to the busboy to the manager. This signals a problem. In all fairness, food was still good. But, not so good as to put up with unprofessional service. I left with a very bad taste in my mouth. Been giving this place a shout out to friends. Won't be doing that anymore.

The potatoes were well seasoned and the bites with the extra crisp on them were the best. The cinnamon roll pancakes were really tasty and the small bits of burnt cinnamon sugar were really tasty. I was hoping the cream cheese frosting had a bit more cream cheese taste but still good.

The Bloody Marys used to be exceptional, accompanied by their delicious fried blue cheese-stuffed olives. This time, I had to ask for the blue cheese olives, and they were served separately and were very different than they were in the past. The asparagus fries were also disappointing and not nearly as good as they used to be. For our entrées, the Chilean sea bass was overcooked, and the mashed potatoes were so dense it was like eating plaster. Overall, the food simply did not meet the standard Nick's was once known for. What was most disappointing was the experience with my certified service animal. Despite dining with a service dog, no one offered a water bowl, and I was told that I could not feed her the plain burger patty I had ordered and paid full price for. The interaction felt unnecessary and unwelcoming. Unfortunately, this visit was nothing like the Nick's we used to love. It's disappointing to see such a decline in both food quality and hospitality from what was once a favorite destination.

I was only in Cali for a short while, and this spot happened to be about 15 min down the street from where I was staying. Perfect location, and I was curious to see how Cali does soul food. From the first bite, it hit me Emotionally triggered as I was transported straight back to my childhood. It felt like I was sitting at the kitchen table in New Orleans, eating my nanny's candied yams, greens, macaroni, and fried chicken. The flavors had that deep, home-cooked love, that is not taken for granted or lost on me, so hats off to the cook! That kind of food doesn't just fill you up; it connects you,and to top it off, the drinks? Man, they serve that real deal kol-aid. The kind I used to drink as a kid. As I was eating, I started thinking about how food ties us to previous & future generations. It's wild how dishes once considered scraps i.e: greens, yams, cornbread, oxtails, are now sought out in restaurants just like this one. These meals are more than just food; they're stories of survival, resilience, and community. But I digress, I know y'all didn't come here for a history lesson in Black culture, so I'll leave it at that. Now, onto the standouts. The mac and cheese and yams? Easily the stars of the plate. I like my yams runny and solid, because I love mixing it with the cornbread. Sweet, savory, soft--that combo hits every time. The macaroni? Seasoned perfectly. Creamy, rich, and not bland like you sometimes get at other spots . That's rare, and I don't take it for granted. Overall, Soul Food Shack gave me more than just a good meal, it gave me a taste of home, miles away from where I grew up.
