Looks like a hole in the wall from the outside in a sleepy town off a highway but when you enter it quite a pleasant experience. The wait staff are attentive and locals . We were here on 4-26-18, but I only just got around to typing my review today. When we first walked in, Sandra brought our menus and took our drink orders, and then Jessica was our server. I recall saying to my wife within the first few minutes, how both of these ladies just "exuded" pleasantness. I can't put a finger on it, and I don't know why, but I just immediately got the warm feeling from each of them that whatever we needed/wanted for a great meal was just a part of their service. Looking at the menu there were many choices, and I didn't see anything that was exactly what I wanted. But before I even got a chance to ask for anything specially made, Jessica immediately said to just tell her whatever I wanted and she would get it done the way I liked. I am a heart surgery patient, and cannot eat the "standard" size portion of anything if I'm going to stay healthy. At the same time, I have no discipline at all with restraint when eating delicious food! If it's on my plate and it's tasty, I'm going to eat it! I often leave a restaurant feeling sick, because I just don't stop at a "sensible" amount of food. But at the same time, I like a lot of variety and want a few bites of several things on my plate. Menu items are not normally put together that way -- and most restaurants charge up the ying-yang for EVERY ITEM as an extra. Jessica had my plate made with a SMALL amount of each of SEVERAL items that are normally "this-or-that" choices, so I could eat a few bites of many things without over-eating. And then didn't upcharge beyond the cost of the plate I started with. On their menu it says that they want to go out of their way to make the experience whatever we want it to be. My experience today was EXACTLY THAT in EVERY WAY As to price, they are not the cheapest place, they are about middle-of-the road for today's pricing. My wife's meal was about $12 and mine was about $14. There were other choices that were as low as the $8 and $9 area. BUT they use healthy food items wherever possible, not the generic stuff that restaurant supplies are often made of. For example, they advertise cage-free eggs, hormone-free chicken, and some organic vegetables. These things cost extra money, and yet their menu prices are in-line with what most other places would charge. All in all, we were VERY HAPPY with Rick's and look forward to coming back :-) read more

I've been coming here for many years. To say I was extremely disappointed today is an understatement. I'm not sure what happened, but I ordered the chicken salad. 2 orders, way over dressed tasted good, however they were on dry white I toasted white bread. Terrible! My husband who never, ever says anything didn't eat his & complained. I made sourdough toast patted off the Mayo & added s& p made it edible. The potato salad was also over dressed. The worse though were the onion rings. I had to throw them away. They were completely inedible. There was so much breading I almost choked when I took a bite. I was waiting to pick up a car & Ricks had closed. Believe me I would have called. I'm only glad I wasn't driving. Then when i got home & I went to take a bite of my sandwich I thought I I'll give it a chance. No go! I had to do the same thing as I did for my husband. My daughters Ortega chicken sandwich was ok. I have been dying to try this eatery since I moved up here. Finally got the chance last week, but I was not impressed with their breakfasts. Maybe I came on an off day, but neither my companion nor I was happy with the food. Both of us had omelets with hash browns and he ordered a side of biscuits and gravy. Potatoes were extremely greasy and so were the omelets. The biscuits were hard as a rock and the gravy tasted stale. In fact, within an hour or two of my meal, I was queasy and remained so for the rest of the day. The staff was friendly but rather slow, and there were only about eight other patrons there when we were. It would take some extraordinary event to get me to give them a second visit. read more

Such a great find! We drove to Wrightwood to play in the snow but there was no snow :( Thankfully, stopping at Ricks made the trip worth it We felt like we were no longer in California and can only compare the feel to Luke's dinner in Gilmore girls, except Rick was a lot less grumpy than Lule. Everyone was so friendly, not just the staff and Rick, but all the locals that were eating there. Several people stopped to talk to us/our son. As we were waiting for our table, one of the lovely waitresses filled our cups we brought from home. It was the start of a great experience. They have a wall full of customers coffee mugs. Cal. All portions are large and prices are very reasonable. My wife loves his Hobo skillet for breakfast and his Biscuits and Gravy are just as good as any I've eaten across the southern United States. Found this place at random in the middle of nowhere (i.e. Pinon Hills). I unknowingly showed up right at their 2:00pm closing time, and was not shown a shred of haste, frustration, or impatience. I did not know this until I sat down and read it on their menu. Everyone was incredibly warm, sweet, and pleasant; genuinely so. I believe this place is family run too. Food came out fast, was delicious, and reasonably priced. Decor was attractive and thoughtful. Bathrooms were clean and comfortable. I cannot think of a way to significantly improve upon this establishment. Therefore, in terms of --quaint roadside cafe-- they deserve five stars.
