Ordered 2 and 1/2 subs and all had very little meat on them. Always raved to my friends about R&D but I won't recommended them anymore. One of the best sub shops in all of NJ. I've been a regular here for over 10 years and whenever I'm craving a sub, this is where I'm stopping. There's some debate on who reigns supreme in this area for subs and without naming names R&M takes the W every time - no contest. I'm a cold sub gal so haven't had too many of their hot options, but their turkey/prov (sometimes ham) with the works is anything but boring. Super fresh, super flavorful and always filling. The bread is great too which is one of the reasons I love it so much. It's a small building with only a few parking spaces so it can get a little crowded, but their service is quick and efficient. No tables, just order at the counter kind of joint. I like getting one of their giant dill pickles on the side that they'll slice for you. Ran by the loveliest people and a business I hope remains for years and years to come. read more

It's easy to drive right by if you don't know the area. They were turkey & Swiss plus a roast beef with provolone. My roast beef was shaved with the works. The bread is soft and pillowy. Best bread I've had in a deli around central NJ. Easily :) Staff is very efficient. Prices are reasonable. Each cost about $8. You really don't have to order a whole sandwich. Reading other reviews for this place they mention about 3 and 6 foot heroes for catering purposes. Something to consider for a holiday party. Enjoy. read more

I've gone to Riddle & Martin Sub Shop since the original owners were behind the counter, and the freshness and quality of the subs today is equal to what it was when Chuck Martin and Ed Riddle were in charge. I'm especially pleased to report that the tuna subs are up to Chuck and Ed's notoriously exacting standards. The place is tiny, so much so that with more than three customers inside it can feel a bit crowded. The decor is old-school Jersey neighborhood takeout joint. It's a refreshing change from boring corporate design. Be careful going in and out, as the door is plastered with signs, making it impossible to see if you're about to bop someone inside as you enter, or get struck as someone exits. The cement steps that lead from the sidewalk are a bit tricky to navigate, but with due caution and a modicum of balance you'll succeed and gain a memorably delectable meal. read more

This sub shop is hands down one of the best in New Jersey. I'm proud to have them in the town I grew up in. The place is super clean and bread is always fresh. I ordered a half of the number thirteen with Provolone, Swiss, and Pepper Jack. A vegetarian dream. When you bite into these subs, they melt in your mouth. I didn't even breathe, the sub was gone in less than 5 minutes. They also have homemade sides to go with their subs. Their coleslaw is pretty awesome too. I highly recommend this joint. Riddle & Martin is roughly the size of a single-car garage (just the first floor) located in a tiny corner lot at the intersection of Old Bridge Turnpike and Hillside Ave (the part of Milltown Road east of Rt. 18). The intersection has a traffic light, and the storefront faces the middle of intersection, so you won't have to look too hard to find it. Half subs go for $5 -$6, while whole subs will set you back $11-13 post-tax. The credit card minimum is $10, so if you don't have cash, consider ordering a whole sub or two half subs. The menu has three types of offerings: breakfast sandwiches, hot subs, and cold subs--which dominate the menu. Included in all sandwiches at no extra cost are lettuce, tomatoes, onions, oil, vinegar, oregano, salt & pepper. A fork will come in handy to finish off the peppers and mounds of shredded lettuce that come with. Your choice of sandwich cheese is sliced fresh by machine when you order while the rest of your sandwich is built before your eyes. The glass panel in front of the counter allows you to observe your sandwich being made from start to finish (5 minutes for a whole sub if no other customers): the meats and lettuce are freshly sliced/chopped and generously portioned. As other reviewers have noted, the sandwich bread is an untoasted, semi-soft, plain white flour baguette that is easy to chew but won't hold up overnight against oil, vinegar, or the liquid secreted by tomatoes and lettuce. The waiting area by the door is already quite cramped--allowing standing room for maybe 4 people-- and the drink coolers by the wall create only a narrow corridor by which to access the cash register at the far end of the room. Napkins and utensils are stocked to the right of the cash register. There's not much to do while you wait, so bring your own entertainment. A amusingly large TV screen has live camera footage of the parking lot to allow customers to monitor any car thefts in progress. During the lunch and dinner rush, the Crestwood Liquor, Bar and Food Store parking lot across the street unofficially serves as overflow parking. Customers living or working within walking distance have the advantage, and may even choose to visit the nearby Magnifico's Ice Cream (a 3-minute walk away) afterwards. While Riddle & Martin continues to be an iconic and longstanding establishment in the area's sub shop scene, it continues to be pricier than competitors, particularly the Village Deli (3 miles south) which charges about 20% less and has no credit card minimum. The best sub sandwiches in the Central Jersey area, hands down. Hidden in this small corner shop is a haven filled with fresh ingredients, quality cold cuts, and flavorful cheeses. Portions are huge- a half sub is easily a foot long and stacked high with meat. Even though the parking and store space warrants a quick stop and go, the service is friendly and efficient. Menu is manageable despite the variety of options available. We ordered the half ham, turkey, and pepper jack cheese and tuna melt with everything on both. They were tastefully seasoned- the tuna was moist but not smothered in mayo, and the oil and vinegar didn't make the bread soggy. The ham and turkey was super moist and light, with the zing of the pepper jack cheese laced in every bite. The bread was fresh and chewy with a slightly crisp exterior.
