My daughter and I ate here yesterday for the first time as we were in the area. Our food was disgusting. She got 4 tacos and only ate a half of one because it was so nasty. I got a taco salad the chicken was cold and the sour cream had a bitter after taste. I barely touched my food because of this and explained to the waiter and asked him to take it off the bill. He bought the check back without taking the taco salad off. I spoke with the manager and explained to him that the food was awful and I wanted the salad taken off the bill. He said I will take the tacos off in which he did. The food is not fit to eat. The manager was unapologetic. Disgusting food and nasty attitudes. We will not be returning. read more

I've been here many times. The food is excellent and the service is great, a bit slow sometimes but always friendly and fun. The chili verde and Mexican pizza are particularly tasty. Last time I went it was still rio grande maybe the name changed? But the address is right. I'm heading there again tonight. read more

I would give Rio Grande somewhere between 3 and 4 stars. The food for the most part is always very good. I'm from California where the Mexican food is simply amazing. Eating Mexican in Charleston is usually a huge disappointment. But, this restaurant is by far the best in Charleston that I've found (if you are looking for authentic) On occasion they'll come up with a dish that seems rushed, or wrong. But, it always tastes great! The chips are always fresh, and the salsa is obviously homemade. They'll even give you hotter salsa for free if you ask your server. You never know which salsa they'll give you, it depends on what they've made that day. The only reason I don't give them 5 stars is the service. IF you are lucky, you'll get a good server. There's one server I specifically request to NOT have. He is simply awful. My husband and I think he must be related to the owners, since he hasn't been fired, and every single time we get him, his service is completely awful. No refills on drinks (unless it's alcohol, and then he is punctual, probably in hopes of a bigger tip!). No silverware (sometimes we get our meal, and still have no silverware.) If you aren't ready to order when he comes back with your first round of drinks, you'd be lucky to see him again in the next 20 minutes... Also, if anything is wrong with your food, you can guarantee he won't be back to see if everything came out okay. And, good luck getting your check. We've waited for 30 minutes after we were done with our food to get our check, and finally gave up and went up front. The weird thing is that this awful server seems to work just about every shift! We go here about 2-3 times per week. Love it, just beware the service. Ask for Chad or Vincent as your servers, and you'll be set! read more

Hands down this is my favorite Mexican Restaurant in the Charleston area. It is not fancy but the food is amazing. Enchiladas and tamales are second to none and the price for the amount of food you get is pretty amazing. The service is great and they will cater to your every need. I've eaten here more times than I can count and have yet to have a bad experience. read more

Great for vegetarians, excellent service, food okay...

Not great at all. The establishment was nice and well decorated. The service, pretty slow. The food...terrible. I got a tamale and chile relleno and my boyfriend got the grilled tacos. When I got my plate it was smothered in cheese, beans, and grease which looked very unappealing. There wasn't much chile, just cheese and the tamale although decent, was very dry. The tacos were a huge disappointment. The corn tortillas were super thick and there was a lot of fat cooked with the chicken so you really only got a little bit of meat in them. Kind of disappointing when you can get better tacos from a truck out here in Charleston. My suggestion if you want better Mexican food, especially tacos, hit up the taco truck on Ashley phosphate in north charleston (the one across from the gas station) or if you're in west Ashley, go to 3 Matadors; way better options. read more

I have been dining at this restaurant regularly since they opened. Have enjoyed most all of my orders but I see the promptness delivering my order and quality of food declining. Two weeks ago it was a long wait for the food and there were plenty of empty tables. This week it took 30 minutes to receive my single order and it was all cold....even the plates were cool. I asked for a new order which came quickly but the cheese inside the quesidillio was not even melted. I will go one more time before marking this restaurant off my list. If the next visit is like the previous two this will be my final visit for a long time. read more

Me and some of my family to eat second time here it was the first time it was good so I came back but that was a mistake food was not good Service was not good the waiter took drink order got it asked a few minutes to look over menu some more people came in placed at them down their drink order came back to us and took or order set some more people behind us got their drinks few min. later table beside us got their meal noticed he like to watch the TV a lot refills on drinks mess that up notice the table behind us getting their dinner still have not got ours so the tow tables around us got served before us we were there before them 6 of us there were 6 of them the table behind us 5 of them after we finally got our meal and they weren't busy he jus like that tv make sure the other tow tables were well taken care of ask for two boxes to go brought one so needed to say did not take home the food just wasn't good service wasn't good so at this time I will think about go back . 4-26-0014 read more

You have got to be kidding me. Mexican? I don't think so. Went with quesidalla recommendation from waiter. The worst preparation of this item ever. Some chicken and a little cheese folded like a soft taco. How to you say extremly disappointed in espanol? In English I can say Never Again! King Street Grill makes the best quesidalla. First let me start by saying the service was terrible. They brought one part of the food at a time and it seemed like they didn't know how to carry multiple things at once. First the brought out my fajitas with no tortillas. Then they brought out the guacamole, sour cream, etc. finally they brought out my tortillas burning hot when my fajita meat had already started to get cold. Then they brought out my grandmothers meal. She got chili relleno with cheese enchilada and a taco. She got her chili relleno "meat" alone. If you do not know it's supposed to be a pepper that's fried and stuffed with the chili relleno meat. There was no pepper and the meat was extremely oily, my grandmother had to dab her meat with multiple napkins. Then her taco finally came out 15 minutes later after she had asked for it twice. My grandfathers meal was 2 plates and they brought out the first then the second multiple minutes after each other. He said that his meal was maybe a 2.5 out of 5. I guess you can't complain but he got two enchiladas when he only asked for one. Not to be racist but our waiter could barely speak English just enough to get our food and drinks. When we ask him where the pepper was that the relleno was supposed to be with he "ignored" us and didn't say a thing. They my grandmother said that the food was not very good, out loud and our waiter didn't understand. At least he could've said sorry, but he did not say a word. The booths were also extremely small and the restaurant was very warm like the AC was out of order! Overall the meal was not the best and came out in several parts not the best meal and service was terrible. Would not suggest to eat there. 1 Star. read more

This is a great Mexican restaurant with cheap and at same time great food. The salsa is just right in spiciness, and the chips were good too. I ordered a Lunch Special No. 1 for $7 and it was worth it. The beans, taco and enchilada were all very good. The waiters and waitresses were very helpful and attentive. Having come from a place where I had an excellent regular Mexican restaurant I visited and having eaten west coast Mexican food, I have high expectations when it comes to Mexican food. It is one of my favorite cuisines to try anywhere I go. I moved to Charleston in August 2014 and have been on the search for a good Mexican restaurant that I could become a regular. This, unfortunately, will not be the place. The salsa is some the the best I've had in Charleston. The chips, however, are not crispy, crunchy like I would like. I ordered the burritos de Chile verde. The description says shredded pork and refried beans. The first trip I was brought 2 burritos with no beans in them and what looked like beef tips. I politely asked for a remake. They have no idea what shredded pork is. When they brought out the remake it was sloppy and the refried beans became pinto beans with no seasoning. It was not tasty at all. The rice also came with the little veggies in it that usually appear is freezer versions. If I came back I would definitely not eat anything with pork in it. read more

Went to this establishment on Friday night. (am visiting from out of town). It started off bad, from the young woman who sat us, who could not have a more piss poor attitude when we asked her to change tables. Mind you, we ended up sitting in a booth where the bench had torn leather - pitiful! Food all the way around was HORRIBLE! Queso was cold and tasteless. Chips were cold and greasy! I ordered the Enchiladas Verdes-They arrived cold, as you can see by the picture, the cheese wasn't even melted. One chicken, one pork and one unidentified meat that was so overdone it may as well had been pork rinds! Rice was bland and dry and the "cabbage" mixture was just "nasty" (sorry to be so harsh). Service was beyond pathetic, attitude's were poor as well. God forbid we ask for our drinks to be refilled. Anyone who thinks this is good Mexican has never had good Mexican!! Save your $$$, go elsewhere where they are foremost happy to have your business! read more

Food was ok. Tacos were smashed together in a foil-wrapped mess. Shells fell apart instantly, and overall was a messy so-so meal. Bathrooms were in very poor shape. In one the door didn't lock, and the other one didn't flush, didn't have toilet paper or soap. Mentioned the condition to a manager, but he showed interest. Nothing had changed by the time we left. Had Rio Grande for dinner the other night. We were seated quickly. Our server was pretty unfriendly but we never went without refills on drinks and chips. Chips were stale. I got the taco salad with steak and my SO got nachos. Both dishes were good, although the salad was a little soggy. Drink specials were decent for a Wednesday night. I was just there trying to order take out and no one assisted. I stood there by the front door and wasn't sure if I should seat myself or not. Even tried to get an employee's attention for help. Wait staff saw me standing there and again, no assistance. I just left. Going to Senior Tequila since someone is there to help and the food is good. read more
