Chinatown has a whole bunch of massage parlors. I decided to stop in here because the place I usually go to was closed. I opted for an hour foot massage. It was okay. It wasn't the best massage but also wasn't the worst. The area for foot massages are right when you walk in so whenever the door opens to outside you get a draft. Don't get your foot massage from the lady who I think is the business owner. She was so distracted running her business that she put in a lazy effort and still expected a large tip. Also my foot massage was for an hour but she stopped at 50 minutes... why didn't I just ask for a 50 minute massage? Ok so this review is for both myself and my sister. I had an amazing massage with a female employee. She understood English and was consistently checking up on how I was feeling. At times she applied what I felt a bit too much pressure, but nothing that was unbearable. I left with my back feeling great. My sister on the other hand got a male employee who apparently instructed her to take her bra off and proceeded to grope her breast saying he was massaging her shoulders. I heard her telling this guy several times he was applying too much pressure and hurting her. After we left my sister said she felt violated and in more pain than when she went in. Since then, she lashed out at any mention of the place and I can tell she is traumatized. For women who are going to this spa please request a female employee and be firm on what you want and where you don't want to be touched. I'm letting you in on my secret go to place. Dr Yang is the best! He's A true gem in Chinatown. Recently I came here for severe back pain caused by a slip and fall. Dr. Yang adjusted my back & did acupuncture with a frequency machine. This is a no frills place in the back of a souvenir type clothing? place. It is not a tourist trap or the Four Seasons mind you. You can roll out of bed (clean of course) and come here if you are in too much pain to get dolled up. Don't sleep. Dr. Yang is NO joke. He's the real deal. He can look at you and instinctively know what problems you're having or you just point to your pain he will know how to take care of you. I've been coming here for years for acupressure and acupuncture with Frank/Dr Yang. Never had a problem they couldn't fix. I moved west and had to find another acupuncturist to continue treatment. I found coincidentally another acupuncturist named Dr Yang. He's good but not like my east coast Dr. Yang. I'll book a flight to NYC just to see Dr. Yang - East. I was a very loyal customer to Rio Grande, and had many amazing massages for incredibly reasonable prices. I brought friends and family here all the time. Unfortunately though they have hired inappropriate massage therapists and my friend was molested by the man massaging her. The massages may have been good, but it is not worth jeopardizing your safety. I always like the management here, but it's apart of their job to make sure that they have therapists who won't be inappropriate with the customers. Stay away! Alternatively there are plenty of other options VERY close by! PS the NYPD detective that advised my friend about how to deal with the situation warned her not to go to any Chinatown massage parlors by herself. I think this is wise advice for women. read more

It is really hard to beat paying $8 for a 10-minute back massage, but I am just unsure about the quality & the setting definitely throws me off a bit. I walked in without making an appointment. The environment is located in the far back corner of building and upon entrance, it looks like the setting of a haunted ghost movie or a shady special-ending kind of place (I am not saying that they actually are, but it looks the way that I would expect a special-ending massage parlor to look). Owners of different stores will also address you on the way in and ask you if you are there for a massage. We were seated in large leather chairs upon arrival as we awaited our massages. There was a slim-figured masseuse there who looked like she was dressed wildly inappropriate for a regular back massage: short, hoochy skirt and very tight short-sleeve shirt. This made me really uncomfortable in addition to the gloomy setting. The massage area itself was "curtained" off - in quotations because it is actually just a flimsy, thin piece of fabric. 4 or 5 beds were stationed within 2-3 feet of each other and it felt really cramped. Masseuse set the timer and proceeded for the 10 requested minutes. It got really painful at one point and I don't know if that is because of the intense knots I had or because of her lack of skill. I am not a frequent massage-goer, but after feeling extremely sore from days of rigorous workouts, the $8 for 10-minutes deal really caught my eye. Price is right, but I am going to try some of the other $8 for 10-minutes deals in the area instead to see if maybe their environment is a little cleaner. The service is okay, didn't like how they sort of corner you for tips at the register area - seriously ladies, hoarding me for a tip doesn't put additional pressure for me to give you more, a little bit of space goes a long way. read more

About my 3rd time here. The place is on the left hand side and I say that because it's a shop that shares the locale with other shops. First time I went there was for my lower back and they did an awesome massage. Felt relaxed with the level of professionalism at hand. They adjust to your needs. I was relaxed to the point of sleep yet conscious to feel the deep tissue massage. Felt amazing ! An excellent no-frills Chinatown massage spot, right near the Museum of Chinese in America. I have been going here for more than ten years and have enjoyed every massage. I never request a particular person and each has his/her own technique and style. They've all been great! 30-minutes is completely restorative. You will not get your feet massaged unless you order a foot massage, and typically the time is concentrated on your back. You can come in for a quick session and be massaged through clothes, or strip down to undies and they will use oil and a hot towel. Curtains separate each massage table. Have paid this place a visit at least 7-8 times over the last year and have to say that it's great for the price. Both back and foot massages have been excellent in my experience when performed by male therapists. For some reason female therapists are hit or miss at this particular establishment (this is not something I usually find to be a problem, in fact my favorite massage therapist in the city is female). I wound up in Rio Grande because I was looking for another massage place, which had great yelp reviews, which is at 179 grand street. Silly me, I went to 179A grand street, and didn't realize my mistake until I already had my feet in a tub of hot liquid. I quickly yelped on my phone and was a little nervous because of the first review on here, but by this point I decided I had to embrace the adventure and go for it. My friend and I each got thirty minute back massages, and they were great. It was a little confusing because when we arrived we were seated in big comfy chairs and our feet were placed in buckets, but I think that's just because we had to wait about ten minutes for beds to clear and they wanted us to be comfortable (or stuck). Once the beds were clear we were ushered into a dark room with four beds, and told to lie down face first. I'll admit I was a bit nervous, but I really shouldn't have been. The massages were great. Strong and powerful, and really worked through my sore neck and back. At $21 + tip each, it was a great deal. When we were finished we were given little cups of water, and a business card where ten visits earn you a free masasge. Overall it was a good adventure, and we were very satisfied. read more

A friend recommended me to come here for a massage, but when I got there I decided to get the acupuncture. It was great, he was proffessional and readjusted my back , then hooked up the needles to a machine. The acupuncture needles then stayed in for 30 mins and at the end I had 10 mins of massage. I have had alot of treatments for my my back and I also used to be a proffessional massage thereapist in a spa. After a recent encounter at Rio Grande, I yelped this business to see what other people said about it. There were few reviews, and at least 2 of them were unfavorable, explaining the unpleasant experiences they had. Interestingly enough, now that I yelped this business again to finally put in my 2 cents, the unfavorable reviews have been curiously removed. I went to Rio Grande 2 weeks ago, upon recommendation of a girlfriend who usually gets reflexology done there, and enjoys it. I was looking forward to trying out a body massage, since I'd had a long day at work, and was hoping to release some muscle tightness. I was led into a communal room where other people were being massaged. Being a woman, I felt uncomfortable getting undressed with a male customer in the same room with me, and I had to convince the woman who ushered me in to somehow allow me some privacy, which she eventually did. I was pleased with the cheap rate for an hour massage, but it turned out to be one of the most stressful massages I've ever had! I've had massages from various outfits, from spas to numerous other spots in Chinatown that I've frequented. These other places have always been a pleasant experience, and so was open to trying this new place out. From the beginning, the woman who brought me into the room and also massaged me, seemed to not be very aware of any kind of massage technique, nor was she aware, or concerned with, how the customer/myself, was doing. She was extremely irregular in her pressure, sometimes applying lots of pressure on areas that shouldn't be as pushed into the table, such as the spine and my knees; and other times, too light on the actual muscles. At other times, she was way too hard on my muscles, using her elbow with too much fervor on my tiny frame. Throughout the hour, I kept telling her it was too hard, and asked her lighten up on the pressure. Unfortunately, my requests were heard on deaf ears, because her only response was laughter, and she would continue where she left off. There were moments when it was so painful, and no matter how many times I'd request her to lighten her technique, she wouldn't let up, and I would have to literally move my body away, and physically show her that I was uncomfortable. There were other times when she would release some tension, and then it became painful again, and I'd ask her to ease up. There were so many times I wanted to just stop the massage and get off the table. But, I really wanted to give her a chance to redeem herself, I was really looking for some muscle relief, and I wanted to hopefully come away with something good after paying any amount of money, as affordable as it was. But, by the end of the hour, I was even more tense from the pain, and was irritated, as well. The guy who seemed to run the place seemed very nice, and after my massage, asked me how it was. I said it could've been better, and that the pressure was oftentimes too much. He said I could've let the woman who was massaging me know. I told him I did, numerous times. Instead of addressing it, he just laughed. The woman who massaged me was standing there, and laughed along with him. Whether or not it was a cultural difference, I don't know, but that's not the issue. I've had some really great massages from other places in Chinatown that were actually cheaper than Rio Grande, and so much better! As an acupuncturist, I am familiar with acupressure points, and these other places in Chinatown had folks that utilized them, and always adjusted if the pressure was too hard or soft. It looks like I'll have to go back to these other places to enjoy my massages again. I won't be going back to Rio Grande. Hopefully my comment won't be seemingly deleted as the other ones I saw were. read more

I went to Rio Grande with some trepidation given the reviews but they were hosting an annex art exhibit for the amazing artist Prune Nourry so I wanted to see her work and give it a try. I went with my significant other and we both had great massages. We have since been back twice. Peter had an uncanny ability to find my painful spots in my back and neck and had me walking out of there feeling much better than when I arrived. It is s weird place but I recommend it. read more
