On my last visit here, I tried the Tempura Shrimp ($9), followed by the Habachi Shrimp & Scallop Combo ($22.99) - this place is not inexpensive, but there's a lot of food on your table. I also chose a Kirin, my favorite Japanese beer, and a value at $4. The combo comes with Onion Soup and House salad, for which I chose the Shrimp Sauce rather than the somewhat different Ginger dressing. The soup and salad were out quickly, and both were very nice! The Tempura was up next, 4 large shrimp, nicely breaded, perfectly cooked. The veggies- onion rings, carrot, squash, and Zucchini - were just like the shrimp, simply perfect - the well sized onion rings were truly exceptional. The Hibachi was a bit slow out of the kitchen, but like all that preceded it, quite exceptional, and plentiful - there is a theme building here, and I approve. The Hibachi combo was very well sized, the shell fish totaled over 25 items, the shrimp about two to one ratio. Both items were fresh, tender, and flavorful, nicely cooked, lightly sauced. The veggies were broccoli, sliced white onion, zucchini, mushrooms, the ever present sweet carrots, and some green bell pepper. These also were fresh tasting, loaded with flavor, not the least overcooked, and also lightly sauced, except for those sweet carrots, awful stuff - and true at each place where I've had Hibachi. I've not had a better meal at a Japanese restaurant in the triad, and I've tried most of them. The service is impeccable, the folks attentive, pleasant, and engaging. Man, those increased prices at Rio sting! The food quality is generally the same as it has been throughout, but as an example the chicken and shrimp combo is now $19.99. While that does bring a fair amount of food, I remember not so long ago when the same combination dinner was less than $13. An increase of ~50 percent of hard to stomach (no pun intended) when the product is exactly the same. The front of house staff here, while especially kind, often seem overrun by the pace of the business. I've been coming to this restaurant for years, even when it was formerly called Shiki's but it's been a while since my last visit. Last night we got an appetizer of the crab and cream cheese wontons, I was not a fan because there was a lot of green onions inside. For entrees we got the teriyaki shrimp and chicken. With the hibachi entrees you always get a miso soup and salad. The miso soup here is my absolute favorite! & the salad is simple but the shrimp sauce makes it delish. The chicken and shrimp were cooked very well and you can tell it's actual real chicken. We also got a sushi roll, the "Yum Yum" roll which is spicy crab, cream cheese and cucumbers. I really enjoyed it and the spice level was perfect, just enough for the flavor but not so hot it was unbearable. I also really enjoyed the sauces on top. Unfortunately our service was pretty slow. You could tell they were short staffed so we felt bad, our waiter was doing his best with many tables and multiple large parties. We were not in a hurry so it wasn't a problem just something to keep in mind if you are looking for something quick! We tried out this place tonight and we love Japanese food so I was excited! We went there a little earlier than normal so Luke didn't bother anyone. The boys got chicken tenders and I ordered hibachi steak and scallops. The good presentation was nice. And it tasted okay. The carrots tasted like they came from a can which is fine. The rice wasn't dry which was a nice change and the salad was fresh. The service was friendly. I felt like it was a little pricey. I've recently started working in this area, and have been to Shiki a couple of times with coworkers, and so far... I think the three star rating is pretty accurate. Both my experiences have been fine, but nothing exceptional or memorable. Prices are fine, neither good or bad, food is ok, service is efficient but not particularly friendly... it's like everything here is stuck in the middle. Ultimately, food is what matters most to me, and I'd say that if other people wanted to go to Shiki... I would go without complaint, but I don't think I would suggest it myself. I have had both the hibachi food and the sushi, with the hibachi fare being a little better than the sushi for my tastes. The sushi does taste nice and fresh, but the rolls are smaller than what I'm used to. Even after three rolls, I still left pretty hungry. Overall, I'm pretty indifferent. Decided to try this place b/c the new Japanese restaurant in Clemons has already closed. I wanted to get Salmon and shrimp hibachi but was told the meal was not available in that form so I instead got the shrimp and scallops hibachi. I thought it was pricey but once I got home, I was impressed at the portion size and the price seemed more fair. I was pleased with the meal. My only complaint is there was only 4 scallops. Accurately label should've been shrimp and a few scallops. If I'm paying extra for shrimp and scallops, there should be a better balance of shrimp AND scallops not adequate shrimp and a sample of scallops. Everything else was ok. I do plan to return but I would not get a combo plate again as in its current iteration, it is not a fair deal. read more

On another weekend in to visit the folks, I went with them to have Sunday lunch at Shiki. Just off I-40 in the Clemmons area before getting to Lewisville, it is back off the road a bit on River Center Drive so might be a bit of a hunt to find at first. It is a nice place with ample room, a family style looking restaurant with large main dining area. Even on a Sunday it was easy to get a table although they were almost full, there was no wait. The server quickly came to get our drink and appetizer orders, and he continued with good service the rest of the time. The salad, soup, and app came out first. I had opted for a salad with the ginger dressing. I wasn't a fan of this version of the dressing, it looked a bit like salsa to me, not what I am used to. The salad itself was fresh and cold (I like a very cold fresh salad). The onion style soup was not very strong or flavorful. I'd like more of the flavor (read: flavor does not mean add pepper if you don't like it) to come through, but it was ok. The pork dumpling appetizer was good, but wish they had a menu selection for steamed pork dumplings instead of pan seared (note to self: next time...ask!). I chose the Hibachi Steak and Chicken combo as my entree. It was ok. The flavor didn't stand out again like I had hoped, except for the pepper (just not a fan of pepper here). Good portions of meat and rice both, but I did opt for no veggies. Bottom line: Not a bad family style feel restaurant. It's not a fancy place, and that's ok, sometimes you just want a good ol' place to go and get some eats. Food is ok, and I'd probably come back for lunch with the 'rents if they want to again. Erik S's review of this place reminded me to leave one. We went for dinner here the first night we moved to the area from NY, and I would say 3 stars is a fair review. We got some of the Americanized Chinese staples. Crab rangoon, general tso chicken, some sushi rolls, and the chicken tenders kids meal and extra fries for the kids. Food quality overall was subpar, validating our apartment manager's opinion that the Chinese food in the NC area "sucks." The gen tso was mushy, the cheese wantons were oddly shaped but tasted okay, and the sushi was nothing worth getting. In all fairness to the triad area, decent sushi can be had within about 10-15 minutes of Shiki. What I will say positive about this place, I thought the service there was very friendly actually. The servers engaged us in conversation, entertained our kids, and shared their story with us as well. It was a taste of that southern hospitality. As for the best thing on the menu? I would recommend getting the fried chicken tenders off the kids menu! My daughter didn't eat it, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. We relocated away from Clemmons, so I can't say we would make the half hour drive back to go here, but if you are in the area and wanting some good chicken tenders and passable sushi and rangoon, give them a shot. read more

Shiki is what you would expect for a quick-service Japanese restaurant. The food and service are good but nothing spectacular. It is quick and the pricing for lunch is great. Their supper prices are a bit high for my taste and opinion of the quality. I love getting the vegetable plate with fried rice and have depended on that multiple times with take out. Surprisingly delightful! My wife convinced me to try it today; she had previously eaten there and really enjoyed it. I can say with enthusiasm that the kitchen takes great pride in carefully preparing the mixtures of seasoning for their food. Everything was very well-balanced and quite tasty. We started with fried pork dumplings which were perfectly fried. I found the dipping sauce slightly too vinegary for my tastes, but very light. I had the Playboy roll which was very fresh tasting and artfully presented. My wife had noodles with shrimp skewers. The noodles were near-perfect, the vegetables just at the right point of doneness and the number of shrimp was amazing for the price; and of course, the flavor balance was exquisite. Okay, I am being very positive. Was it the best sushi I have ever had? No, but it was still extremely good. What pushed this rating to five stars for me was the service. The wait staff were extremely accommodating and friendly, even spending extra time amusing our son (plus it was not terribly busy). I do not think they could have done a better job and were so nice and gracious. With obvious pride in their food and service, I have to strongly recommend this restaurant. Final note: It may suffer slightly from location. It is just off Lewisville-Clemmons road, behind the Rite-Aid, not too far from the Food Lion. Ate here for the first time tonight. I ordered 1 sushi roll and 1 order of maguro nigiri. First, service was excellent. Fast, very polite and attentive. Prices for sushi rolls were on the high side for the size of the specialty rolls. Though my Shiki Special roll was 8 pieces and was displayed attractively, the roll was smaller than most specialty rolls I have seen and it was just barely more flavorful than the ones from the grocery store. The maguro, on the other hand, was a good deal. 2 pieces for $3.75 with the nigiri portions very generous. It was absolutely fresh, tender, and delicious. By far the best part of my meal. I didn't care for the atmosphere. Though it was clean, it certainly felt more like a Chinese Buffet restaurant with the warehouse lights in the ceiling and a room with tables in it.
