We drove up from the Bloomington, IL area (about an hour or so) to eat here on a Sunday. Can I just say it was worth the drive?? You can order 1/4 dark, 1/4 white or strips. Also, definitely order the mushrooms and pickles/crusties. The fry on the chicken is not heavy (I was worried about that) and same with the mushrooms. When you take a bite, it doesn't pull away from the neat or mushrooms like other places. Get there early and have your whole party with you or you won't be able to order or be seated. Not sure what all the hype is about. Everything tasted the same, from the mushrooms to the fries to the chicken. The 40 min wait at 4:00 was definitely not worth it, particularly when all the people butting between the line to the bar get served their food served first. Waited 40 minutes from order to food delivery and everything was ice cold. Literally, the cheese wouldn't even melt on the chicken sandwich. A little spot in a nice little farm town, that looks recently updated. Rip's seatings are funny, so it's worth explaining. For example this Sunday, doors opened at 12:30, tables are filled, and the family card games commence until the 2:30 service. We arrived at 2 and got on the waiting list, while our order was taken. Had a local draft at the bar... Food started flowing out of the (fully visible) kitchen right at 2:30--what they call "1st pan (or was it tray?)." We sat 15 minutes later and were promptly served the best fried chicken in memory. That's saying something, because I've been to the original Babe's near Fort Worth, TX. The chicken is battered lightly, seasoned deftly, and fried so HOT the skin melds with the batter, which makes for some wonderful textures. It's almost tempura-like in texture. Fresh cut fries. Fried mushrooms. Fried crispies (tailings from the fryer, served as a crisp snack)...everything is out of that molten hot perfect oil bath back in their clean kitchen. Order a 1/4 dark or white, or a 1/2 either way. The "1/2 white" is two breasts/two wings. A BIG portion. Fair prices. We were all more than happy. When in the area, Rip's is a must-eat place. We waited an hour and a half to be seated. They only have fried chicken which comes with fries. I personally liked the fries better than the chicken. You can get dill pickle slices and the fried batter pieces while you wait for your food. Both were tasty. My family and I have been to White Fence Farm, Dell Rhea's, and those chain chicken joints and I have now found my true Chicken Lovers Landing! On this particular Memorial Day weekend, Saturday, I was finally able to talk my family to drive for an hour and 20 minutes to Ladd, IL from Downers Grove, IL. Prior to arriving, I'm glad I didn't tell my wife and family about the often one hour wait or more after we arrive after a one hour and 20-minute drive otherwise I may not be here providing this review. The hostess was taking orders from customers standing in line. When she got to us, I said to her, "please tell my family the hour and 20-minute drive was worth the trip?". She laughed and explained to everyone about the chicken and provided a verbal run down of the menu. She was absolutely wonderful to us! I wish I knew her name. The wait for us after we walked in the door to being seated couldn't have been no more than 15 minutes on this on this particular night. BUT WE WERE SOOO LUCKY. This may not happen for you but please do not get discouraged because it will definitely be worth the wait. After we sat the server came around for drinks. I asked for the "old mans" beer as while were waiting in line, I saw at the absolute fantastic bar they have, was Hamm's on tap. I haven't see Hamm's on tap in years. The ladies got the Frozen Watermelon Pucker Lemonade. Their eyes opened wide when they started drinking it. They loved it. We chatted about travel and local Ladd and Cherry, IL history. I never knew that Cherry and Ladd, IL were old coal mining and railroad towns. I just ate here this past weekend and this was easily the best fried chicken I've ever eaten! We came around 3:15/3:30 in the afternoon and we're seated. We kept waiting and waiting only to realize that they didn't open until 4:15. By 4:15 the place was completely full and the line was out the door. The fried chicken was incredibly moist and I loved the batter! It was excellent! The waitresses were polite, but they were very busy running around carrying plates of chicken to everyone. So there we were visiting my husband's family in Clinton IL from AZ and somebody said, "What do you feel like doing for dinner?" Being the outsider in the family and not realizing what I was saying, I suggested we all go to Rip's. They looked at one another only briefly and quickly agreed. So off we went. Turned out we were about 95 miles from Rip's and I had no clue (they all knew.) If you've never been there before, it's a little strange since they don't have a menu, you just wait in line (we waited like 20 minutes) till a girl takes your order (there is only light or dark meat chicken with fries and mushrooms if you want them). Then you wait till a table opens up. When we sat down, we waited about 45 minutes till our food came. The waitress was really nice and kept our drinks full. We had the pickle appetizer thing, which was good. The chicken was ok - it was crisp and juicy, but I didn't think it had a lot of flavor. It was really greasy, like stomach turning the rest of the night, greasy. And I know it's fried chicken so it's supposed to be greasy, but this was extreme. As a teenager Rip's was a great place to go on a budget and it still is. $3.50 for 1/4 Chicken and Fries, where else could you get that? Would you like a burger instead of chicken? Too bad, they only serve chicken and fish (Friday's only). Would you like an appetizer? Your choices are pickles, mushrooms, coleslaw and fries. I haven't been to Rip's in quite a while, but they used to serve "crunchies". It's the fried batter that has fallen off the chicken into--sounds gross, but they are wonderful. Now I must warn you, the wait can be quite long, especially on weekends. If you're a local you already know this. So plan on standing in line and enjoying a couple beers. We got their five minutes after the regular lunch hours, but they were happy to take care of us. We ordered the food. It took a long time to get (chicken, fries and bread). When it came out it was on paper plates / bowls. OK, still part of the theme. No problem, not here for anything but this amazing chicken everyone kept hyping up. Well... that wasn't the case. It was just OK. It was very heavy in the oil/grease. The flavor was just OK. Nothing special at all. What is going on here? Why was this place hyped so much? What are we missing out on? I think this has just become one of those folklore places. A place in the middle of nowhere that everyone wants to be a hidden gem. What I think really drives the hype is that there is just absolutely NOTHING ELSE IN THE AREA, so yeah, it's going to be good. I also think they incorporate the long wait for effect. I mean, its fried chicken. They are pulling that hype / time wait thing that places like Garrett's Popcorn and Hot Dougs do in Chicago. They explained the process of eating in line, playing your order ad's the waitress will come back for you to seat you. They had benn going there since he wss 5 yrs old. The floors can get slippery to travel with caution, but when you get to your seat you will be friendly greeted with crispies and pickles. Make sure to order some breaded mushrooms too. You do not get any utensils but that is part of the fun. When the chicken comes out **it will be crazy hot** you have to be careful. I suggest breaking off the wing and eating that first. Then take one of the wing bones and use it to break open the breast to help cool it down before eating. You can order coleslaw on the side. There is a full bar with inexpensive drinks and the chicken dinners themselves are incredibly reasonable and delicious! By the time we finished our meal, received our carryouts for people who could not make our gathering the notorious line had formed for people waiting to get a seat. And it's true. Best place for chicken in the Illinois valley. Nothing compares to rips. My boyfriend and I drive a half hour to come to this place out in the middle of nowhere and it totally worth it! Yes, you usually have to wait in line but we didn't care and we just ordered a beer and hung out since we had nothing else better to do. The owner did come and take our order while we were in line which was a nice touch. We ordered a pitcher of beer, I got chicken strips and fries and my boyfriend got a 1/2 chicken and fries. Leave it to my group of friends to drive an hour or so out west in a blistering snowstorm for fried chicken. Many other reviewers discuss the lines and how long you have to wait for chicken here. There certainly was no wait last night. As soon as we walked in, a waitress greeted us and asked what we wanted. I said "table for 4" but she said "no, do you want white or dark?" She brought us the crunchies (little bits of fried that fall off of the chicken) and pickles (75 cents extra). Mmmmm greasy salty goodness. Beers were only 2-3 a pop. We waited about 15 minutes and our chicken came out piping hot. Both the white and dark were 1/4 chicken each, with fries and a piece of bread to soak up the grease. Everything's on paper plates here- Rip's doesn't pull any punches trying to be fancy. The chicken had great crispy skin, and the meat was perfectly moist. I loved that they threw more crunchy bits in with the fries. The fries were ok, nothing to write home about. I would probably call their chicken a tie with Chicken Manor in Addison. For 4 people to eat dinner and have a beer, it came to $30. Wow. You can't beat that. I would definately come back to Rip's if I was in the vicinity (its not too far from Starved Rock), but if I get a chicken craving close to home, I will probably stick with Chicken Manor. read more
