I do feel a little silly in being the first to review when I forgot to even order any baked goods on my first stop in, but to be fair to me, I had just woken up and their granola bowls sounded spectacular. I got an orange bowl (which I think was frozen pineapple, mango, OJ, and turmeric blended + granola + coconut + berries) and a rosemary tea latte. I also had a sip of my friend's lavender tea latte and a small bite of one of the cupcakes. Everything was so delicious! The only reason I didn't go back for some baked goods after my breakfast was because it got super busy after my friends and I got our orders. Staff was super friendly and seemed well staffed considering the grand opening was yesterday. The one major downside to this business is the size of the space. There's 4 small tables in the 2 big windows that seat 8ish (chair on one side, bench on the other so you COULD squeeze more); today 3 of those tables were taken by people with laptops. There's a bar with 3 chairs. There's a large table with 6 chairs; thankfully, people seemed okay to share this. In the back, there's a "standing bar." So kind of harder to meet up with friends than to go by yourself or get something to go. I definitely look forward to going back and pick up some baked goods next time. read more

LEAVE IT: * There are so many rave reviews about the donuts but I wasn't impressed with either of mine (apple fritter + chocolate with vanilla glaze.) My first thought was that it would make a really good biscuit - the consistency was similar to the bread on the sandwich. * Very confused why there is "cow milk" as an option on the coffee menu? I understand that eating gluten free at this point is still going to cause an up charge. And I'm OK with that. I'm used to it. The food quality was excellent. It reminds me of the late Marie Catribs. Which had a lot of vegan and gluten-free options as well. I will definitely be frequenting this place. If you want high-quality. This is a place to go to. While traveling home from up north Michigan, I made a specific stop to pick up some gluten free goodies. The biggest draw for me was that they had GF pop tarts. I did purchase those along with oatmeal Whoopi pies.... a few cookies etc. to be 100% honest I found the pop tarts disappointing. A lot of dough, little filling and not nearly enough icing on top. I only say not enough icing because the dough doesn't have much flavor and they were a bit dry. The cookies, Whoopi pies and apple fritters were amazing!!! We have been twice, my son and I are both GF and my son is also dye-free. We live out of town and do not have a similar bakery near us. It's a darling little bakery, a pleasing place to sit and have a cup of coffee and a treat. All of their treats are very pretty, and super tempting. On our first visit, we were so excited that we tried the donuts, cupcakes, cake and oatmeal pie. We both agreed the cupcakes were beautiful but not worth eating. There was nothing special about their taste. The second visit, my 10 year old decided he didn't want anything. I bought the cinnamon roll (which is more of a coffee cake than a roll), a donut, and a piece of carrot cake. The donut I would rate a 5! (see picture). Earl grey and lavender, yes PLEASE! Consistency was similar to an old-fashioned buttermilk and glaze was pretty and delicious. Cinnamon rolls are my absolute favorite treat and theirs are just meh. Consistency of cake, and not very cinnamon-y. I won't order one again. The first time we went, I had a white cake with sprinkles that was very good (which was interesting since the cupcakes were so boring). But the carrot cake was just okay, more on par with the cupcakes. I have made better from a gf box mix. I'll go back JUST for a donut and not be tempted by the beautiful appearance of their other treats. read more

My brother is on a gluten free diet so they stopped to get donuts. My brother loved them and said they were really good for gluten free. I am not gluten free and I thought they lacked flavor and were dry. They had some unique flavor combos (basil raspberry) but I am a more traditional donut eater so not for me. I've been around gluten free and vegan baked goods most of my life because my wife and kids need them. We've literally tried everything within a 200 mile radius and this place is really good. Plus a good variety. If you're not GF, go someplace else because this is our place. You have other, better options. That said, I have a couple things that drive me nuts when I go here. 1) Why does it take so long to get a flipping cup of coffee? Not just me, everyone else I talk too. You get a delicious muffin and then you literally stare at it (15 minutes today) waiting for coffee. All I ordered was coffee- just pour it already! Today it was 15 minutes but that's not unusual. It happens every time I go. I think the coffee is run by a different company, Squibb, so maybe it's not fair blaming Rise. Second, when you order a piece of cake they take it in the back room and measure it with a micrometer and it takes forever! There are large and small cakes and You pay as much for a small cake as a large, so never order small. But even after that- sometimes I get a good slice- other times I want to send it back because "this is a $6 piece of cake! Dont scrimp on me!" Sometimes it's half the size as the previous time I went. You would think that as long as it takes, slices would be more consistent. Error on the side of too big, not the other way. So, I just stick with a muffin now. I get what I see. Third, there is very limited parking, but I can deal with that. Please fix these first two things and I will love you long time! I want to give you a five, but I can't because of a couple things that should be real easy to fix. In food service, bringing out the coffee last and 15 minutes after the food is breaking all the rules. For GF options, you won't find better baked goods around GR. LJs in Holland is a close second, but all they have are muffins. read more

Rise is wonderful! Great options for food allergies. In my first visit ever yesterday, it was clear that they genuinely cared about providing great service and food. They took extra care to give us off-menu options that met our dietary needs - a list of allergies including wheat, corn, legumes, nuts, and more. The owner gave us personal attention to make sure our dietary allergies were avoided, that we had plenty of options for ordering, and that we enjoyed the food. The kindness and service were beyond great. We're not from Grand Rapids, but had driven there in the morning for a personally difficult reason. After a couple hours in town, it was almost time for our drive home, and we were emotionally drained and pretty hungry. We found Rise, praying they'd be the kind of place that could manage all our allergies. They were! The kindness of the staff, and especially the personal attention and compassion from the owner, made our day. We will never forget this. read more

I have heard such good things about Rise, and knew they were having some festive Halloween goodies this past weekend... so, I finally decided to give it a try! First off, I would totally come back here to dine in-person. Their little coffee shop/cafe is literally the cutest place ever! A very fun spot to visit in Grand Rapids! Second, their themed Halloween goodies were AWESOME. They did such an epic job on the decorating and theming. I tried the pop tart, and I really loved it! I thought it was fresh and very yummy tasting. My husband tasted one of the donuts and said it was one of the worst donuts he has ever tasted. He said it was so dry and barely had any flavor. I would be willing to try their donuts, as everyone has different taste buds... and also as so many people have told me their donuts are so yummy! They know how to take %25 tip minimum but the baristas and the cashier have an attitude and clearly do not want to be there. I was very disappointed with the experience. The hot drinks they make are almost cold, very small size and tastes just a-okey. When I "super kindly" mentioned the drink tasted great but was cold, they ignored me and had me standing there while they took care of other customers. After I stood there unattended, and ignored, I said I will go back to my table, the long haired gentlemen finally said "I suppose I can try to make another one if you really want" with an attitude. read more
