I wanted to come here about a year ago but I wasn't able to find parking (note to fellow Yelpers - there is incredibly limited parking in the front of the restaurant and in the parking lot that's sort of behind it) so I ended up not coming back until today (after doing a Yelp search for brunch in Decatur). Since we were in the area, we decided to give this place another shot. Lo and behold, we were able to find a parking space on the street, a few doors down from the restaurant. Score! They close at 3pm on Sunday and we arrived around 1:30pm so I assume we missed the big brunch rush around 11am. We were seated pretty quickly at 2 window seats, which was nice since we had a nice view outside. Their menu has good options (not too many) and they're reasonably priced. I'm always happy to see vegan/vegetarian items on a brunch menu so I went with the vegan grit bowl. OH. MY. GOD. This is probably one of the best vegan meals I've ever had in Atlanta. It's basically a bowl of perfectly textured grits topped with (primarily green) veggies and a vegan form of potlikker (basically the "juice" that's formed when you cook collard greens) gravy. I must find out how they seasoned that gravy because I'm pretty sure I could drink it out of a glass! LOL! Also, I loved that the grits were chock full of onions/scallions and topped w/ roasted beets. I would have loved to see a "protein" element present but I promise I'm not complaining! I also ordered a biscuit (after trying a bite of my husband's) since they were fluffy and delicious!! One thing of note is that they have a homemade pineapple jam which is a perfect spread for the biscuit. Do try it! My husband had the fried trout and grits, which he devoured and raved about, as well. Overall, my experience here was very good! Great food, good service -- oh, and good coffee! Came here for brunch with my brother and his beau. We came around noon and were seated immediately. The menu had about 15 entrees and plenty of ala carte items. I ordered the kickstart which comes with 2 eggs (your choice), grits, biscuit, and bacon. The bacon was overly cooked and burnt. But the other items were great! Our orders all consisted of a biscuit. which was exceptionally fluffy. try it! We also had the CBCB- cheddar fried chicken biscuit. (delish!) fried chicken and waffle- chicken was great, waffle (meh) and biscuit and gravy- My brother thoroughly enjoyed this. Our waiter was very nice but unfortunately all of our waters were empty from the beginning of the meal and was never refilled. hence the 4 star, instead of 5. will be back again! read more

Came here for brunch the other day. I ended up getting the biscuit plate but substituted scrambled eggs, toast, and the fruit cup. The home fries were crunchy and delicious! This is an adorable restaurant located in Avondale Estates. PARKING|| There is some parking in the back and a small parking area in front of the strip of stores. It's a bit difficult to back out because of oncoming traffic, so I'd suggest the back parking lot if you're coming during busy hours such as mornings or lunch time. FOOD|| I ordered a side of fried chicken ($4) and hash browns ($3) to go. Fried chicken was great. It was thin, but was well seasoned and well cooked, very tasty! The hash browns though... I got so many shriveled up fried pieces that made eating it not enjoyable. I will probably not order the hash browns again. SERVICE|| The woman was very nice and gave me time to look over the menu. Was truly excited about trying their fried green tomatoes but much to my dismay there was more bread than tomato. That in itself is not a deal breaker but the coating was thick and hard to bite in some places. The middle of one of my tomatoes was very stiff and I couldn't even eat it. I tasted the breading more than the tomato, it was dry and at least one tomato was not GREEN. Highly disappointed. The sauce couldn't even help it out. read more

I've been meaning to try this place for months and finally did on Sunday. They earned every single star! Great customer service in the front of the house, amazing food. Our server was working his tail off, and despite it being completely full, we never felt rushed or ignored. Food arrived hot and relatively quickly and it was delicious. Oh.... just so disappointing. I was super excited to go there as they seemed to have a nice chicken biscuit. The ambiance was great, staff super friendly. Overall great experience. HOWEVER, the C.B.C.B deserves zero stars. It was terrible. The biscuit and chicken were beyond dry. I tried to bite it, I couldn't. I tried to cut it, it didn't work. I took it apart and ate trying to rip it apart, since that was the only way i could manage it. It needed some sauce, but even that wouldn't have saved the dry chicken or biscuit. It was also pretty cold. If I had to blindly guess, somebody found it in the trash from a week ago and put it on my plate (kidding, but not really). The not so terrible things.... Waffle was delicious. Wish places like that had some fresh fruit like strawberries, but it didn't. Coffee was below average too. Beautiful little restaurant. Such a great experience overall with great service and excellent food! My friend and I both got the C.B.C.B (fried chicken, cheese, and bacon on a biscuit) with a side of cheddar grits. A huge sandwich with so much good flavor, the chicken was perfectly seasoned and crispy, the bacon was savory and the biscuit was soft and flaky. 10/10 recommended this place and will definitely be coming back next time im in the area!!! read more

We did not arrive at the restaurant after-hours or when it was posted as being closed, so yes, we did expect it to be open in the middle of the dinner service on a Saturday night. Normally, a business's hours of operations are just that. And I do not expect this review to "show" them anything because that would imply some sense of receptivity, which we are clearly not working with here. Rather, the point was to share my experience so far, which the owner's response sums up quite nicely. Original Review: This review does not reflect the food, as I have not had a chance to try it. Rather, it's a reflection of my experience so far, which has been made up of an unannounced cancellation of their dinner service on a Saturday evening (save a sign on the door) and a tone deaf response from the owner when a complaint was made. I've worked for a lot of family-owned restaurants and deal primarily in customer service; I don't leave poor reviews because I prefer to to give a business the benefit of the doubt or vote with my dollar. But replying to a valid complaint with an unprofessional and unproductive comment destroyed my interest in trying a place I had been looking forward to for weeks. Update: Apparently someone at this establishment is upset that I waited to review this restaurant until several months after eating there. I don't like negative reviews and they tend to stay as drafts for quite some time before I post it. Attached is the email I got from someone at the business. The end result was him stating I am a "hack" because my review is from August. I have downgraded from 2 to 1 star for this shocking, yet hilarious exchange. (I love that the subject is "psshhh" hahahh) side note-- anyone that has 25 not recommended reviews (all positive) is a bit sketch.. some were written by the owner multiple times. Original review: We came here for breakfast and it was pretty average. I was curious because they always have a long wait out the door when i pass by.. The place was very cute and the servers were friendly but the food just did not make much of an impression. I ate their shrimp and grits, well ordered I should say. I didn't eat that much because it was kind of.. boring. I wanted to take it home to spice it up a bit and give it some flavor. My husband's dish was so unmemorable that I don't even remember what he had... HIGHLY unusual for me. The icing on the cake was that I forgot about and did not eat my leftovers. This breakfast place is one of the best I've been to. I came here first on a Saturday so I was served the brunch menu. I decided to start with the dumplings which were perfectly crispy on the outside with a sweet glaze of maple syrup and a very delectable and saucy inside. The combination of sweetness, sauciness, and garnish of cilantro and etc was amazing. I ordered the chorizo tacos although I will be back for the shrimp and grits. The tacos were amazing to say the least. A perfect blend of flavor, spice, and freshness really made my start to the day amazing. Rising Son has been on my list of breakfast spots to check out for awhile and finally made it. We went inn a Saturday afternoon for brunch and was surprised that we didn't have a wait. I instantly fell in love with the eclectic decor and was surprised by the size of the restaurant, much larger then I thought. There was four total in the party and everyone knew what they wanted except for me. I forgot to check online! I ended up ordering the trout and grit stack. Food came out pretty quickly and we had good service. I hate to say that I was not a fan of the fish and grits, something was missing and the fish was fried too hard. I was the only one disappointed with their meal, everyone else loved what ate. The hash and cheddar biscuit were big hits as well as the lemonade. Im giving 3 stars based on the good service and reviews from the others in my party. I was also under the weather so my taste buds might have been off. I tried Rising Son a few months ago and was left feeling comme ci comme ca about my meal. After coming back for breakfast recently, I'm motivated to update my review. This time we couldn't just breeze into a parking spot in front of the restaurant; we had to circle twice to find a space on Potter Avenue. There was a wait for a table or a seat at the bar. It was about 11:30 AM on Saturday and the place was packed. The hostess said she didn't invite us to sit in open seats at the front counter since the huge window made that section ten degrees hotter than the rest of the dining room. The other people sitting there shaded their eyes from the sun and looked like they were trying not to melt. Fortunately, it took less than ten minutes for a table to open. This time I saw several items of interest on the menu. I ordered one of their handcrafted sodas (Lavender Lemon) and Fried Trout with Grits...both had my taste buds dancing. I don't typically enjoy sodas and have a hard time drinking more than half a mini can (the ones that come in an eight-pack). Usually a few sips and I'm done. I only ordered a soda with my meal because a) I'm a sucker for the word "handcrafted" and b) it came with one of those cutesy, striped paper straws. It was so fizzy and fresh that my glass was empty in seconds! The fish and grits were equally addictive. The trout skin was cornmeal crispy, its flesh was flaky and I loved that I didn't have to contend with any bones. With the cheese grits and eggs it was a hearty portion and I enjoyed every bite! The service was just as friendly and prompt as it was the first time (thanks to Brian A.) but my food was much tastier. I'm kinda a Rising Son fan now, so 4 stars. read more

I live around the corner from Rising Son and passed by several times before eventually stopping in for brunch. I was sad to see The Bishop go, but Rising Son is a more that suitable replacement. Per the recommendations of many, I ordered the fish and grits and it did not disappoint. I am a very adventurous eater and have very few food pet peeves, one being anything in my grits other than sugar (what can I say...I'm from Arkansas) and another is having my food touch. The fish, grits, and scrambled eggs went against both of these things and I LOVED it! The trout was fried to perfection and the grits were perfectly blended with cheese. The serving size and flavors were well worth the $14 price of the fish and grits. I'm hoping they stick around for a while and I certainly look forward to coming back. A solid southern breakfast with big biscuits. Came here with my mom for some breakfast because they had vegan and vegetarian options. I ordered the sundried tomato frittata with the arugula salad on top. The eggs were cooked perfectly and not greasy. The arugula was very fresh and paired well with the eggs. I ordered a biscuit which was Yhuge! Not super dense like Flying Biscuit; lighter (and better!) than that. My only critique is that I would love to see local jam/preserve/ honey options instead of that horrible smucker stuff. Still, they did offer some homemade apple butter so its all good. My mom (read uber picky mom) ordered the fried chicken and she loved it. If any chief can please my mom, that makes him a rock star. The chef here was at Home Grown, so if you like that place, you will like it here. Lots of drama about how the chef left Home Grown, but who cares. The food rocks. It was alright...I had the Kickstarter (two eggs, 2 strips of bacon, a biscuit and grits or hash browns) with hash browns instead. The hash browns were tiny tiny squares with a little too much salt on them. I needed to ask for a spoon to eat the hash browns. The biscuit was also okay...it was really thick so I saved it for last (I didn't finish it) I also ordered a waffle a la carte. The waffle was actually really good but...for $4 it should have been a little bigger. The customer service was awesome!!! I would like to change my first review. I love this place! I went a second time solo and it was awesome! I sat at the bar and ordered chicken and waffles with a side of hash browns. The decor is quirky and fun and I've heard great things so I was excited to try Rising Son. I LOVE breakfast restaurants that have a bar which makes it easy for a quick meal without having to wait. The bartender was friendly and the drink was tasty. However the servers did seem super rushed in their interactions with each other and this added to a chaotic atmosphere. Perhaps I just went on an off day. The brunch hash was a bit odd. I'm glad I paid extra for the egg on top or it would have been just all potatoes. The potatoes took up most of the dish with a little bit of salsa on the top and some chorizo mixed in. Taste was good but proportions were strange. I was expecting more from the price. I've heard really good things about the chicken biscuit and the chicken and waffles. I would definitely go again since I enjoyed the atmosphere and the service was friendly in order to try something different. read more

We were seated and attended to. My husband ordered his beer and I stuck with water. We started with fried vegetables to share for appetizers.. We liked our vegs, in the plate were fried green tomatoes, jalapenos and mushrooms. A very light ranch dip came with it. It was a great start Our entree came, I had the Crispy mushroom carbonara. I liked my dish but some fettuccine were under cooked and therefore hard and stuck together. My husband's meat and 3 was average. The cornbread he said was burnt on one side, the collard greens were sweet which we weren't quite used to, the beans were meh, the mash was good. The chicken was over-fried. He didn't really enjoy his meal. Overall I think they do a much better breakfast than dinner. I will continue to go there for brunch but might give dinner a miss. read more

This place had been on my radar for a few months before I finally stopped in. I was super impressed and I am looking forward to making Rising Son a permanent fixture in my brunch rotation. The restaurant is located in Avondale Estates in the cute little strip of shops and restaurants on Avondale Rd. This is not a neighborhood I visit often so I was excited to step outside of my normal path and dine at Rising Son. The aesthetics of the restaurant are quite impressive. The decor is simple but beautiful with local art (some for sale) on the walls. The bar area is stylish and inviting and the overall atmosphere is kind of upscale hipster if that's a thing? That's what I'm calling it anyway. The service was great and it was so refreshing to be able to walk into a brunch-serving establishment and be seated right away. This is a rarity in Atlanta. Believe you me, the promptness of seating must only be related to the fact that this location is not as "prime" as some of the more jam-packed places in Atlanta. It was definitely a "wait worthy" brunch. We started off with some great coffee. They serve Batdorf and Bronson, which is always delicious. They do not currently offer espresso drinks but our server advised that an espresso machine is on their short list. I ordered the vegan grit bowl for my meal. It was SO good. It was a gigantic bowl of grits topped with a scrumptious blend of green veggies and vegan gravy. I learned that a lot of the veggies used are grown in the owner's garden. Wow! My partner ordered the frittata which was topped with home-grown arugula and shaved parmesan. Both dishes were beautifully presented. I would love it if Rising Son would expand their menu to include more vegan options but the fact that they have one dish that is so outstanding is impressive. Parking was easy. They make the hash browns more like mini spiced breakfast potatoes than traditional stringy ones (and I liked these better). The grits were a little undercooked and not the best I had, but also not bad. Cheese on the eggs was an extra $0.50. - Service: Our waitress was attentive and friendly, even though she was busy. The menu covered all of the breakfast basics but all the items had a nice twist too. This has to be one of the best breakfast places I've been to. And I have eaten at a lot of breakfast/brunch places. Almost every weekend me and my wife take to some area of town to eat breakfast and walk around. We've eaten so many variations of shrimp and grits I'm pretty sure I could start a blog at this point. But this place blew me away. Let's break it down. Atmosphere: Rising Son is an appropriate name for a place that instantly fills you with warmth. From the warm color palette of the decor to the toasty smells permeating the air, I immediately felt at home. The only slightly off putting thing was this like... fake fox? Dog? Maybe it was taxidermy. At first I thought it was creep but as I ate the darned thing began to grow on me! The hostesses were attentive and kind. Our waitress was a total delight! She was super sweet and came by go check on us just enough. She recommended we put eggs on our hashed out and it was a stellar suggestion! Which brings us right to... the food! Me and my wife always get food to share. We got the shrimp and grits and the hashed out with 2 eggs. Shrimp and grits: so delicious! The BBQ sauce adds a welcomed sweetness that compliments the saltiness of the cheese grits. The shrimp was well cooked and very tasty. It also has jalapeños and caramelized onions, which I felt was so different but it worked perfect to create a complex dish with a lot of layers and depth. So many textures! I am a huge shrimp and grits fan and this was awesome. Hashed out: imagine if you made a hash with fries. That's what this is like. It's like cut up chorizo fries. And it is marvelous. The toasty yet chewy hash is bound together by cheese and wowzers. It's as good as it looks. Now I'll tell you something. I grabbed a little bit bit of the hashed out and dipped it in my grits with BBQ sauce. I highly recommend you do that for maximum enjoyment. We also had the blood orange cardamom house made soda. It was smoky and sweet and absolutely delicious. Highly recommend. They were out of the pistachio like rosewater but I wish desperately I could try it! All in all, such a great place. read more
