They are open for dinner on Fri and Sat only - I was expecting Southern Comfort food since that's how it's described for breakfast and lunch. Instead, was pleasantly surprised with a wonderful and eclectic menu with some Southern items. I had the Pan Roasted chicken over veggies. The chicken was cooked to perfection- juicy with crispy skin, and seasoned just right. So delicious! My companions had the Fried chicken and much preferred my dish over theirs. VERY UNPROFESSIONAL; DISCRIMINATED AGAINST. I have NEVER EVER had such a horrible experience eating out at a restaurant. We are regular customers, come here often. the first few times we came here is was ok, they have made mistakes on our order. We have spoke with manager she apologized and ressolved the issue. It seems like Sunday's they are extremely busy can't handle work load. We walked inside and was told there was 1hr hold. That was fine we then come back. Placed our order with the waitress, she of course took ticket to the back, then she walks up to us and tells us she ran out shrimp, we said ok cool we'll have fish and explained how we would like for it to be prepared. The food then comes out it's opposite of what we asked for. We didn't ask for eggs yet they managed to put eggs in our plate. We then had to call waitress she apologized and claim she gave them the ticket they made a mistake because they are swamped with orders and she would get it fixed. There was no utensils at our table, so we had to ask waitress to bring us some. When the food came our second time it looked as if it was just slapped on plate. My friend notice this waitress working and politely ask for a menu. Few minutes later this cook walks up to us asking " what's going on" I was under they impression he was going to apologize about what occurred. NOPE! He comes out and says " you see that girl that's my 14 year old daughter you will not talk to her like that!" I'm lost for words we asked what was said to her we simply asked for a menu. He the says "you slammed your plate on the table and then told her get me a menu" my friend then tries to explain to him that never occurred waitress brought food out to the table there was no plate slammed on the table. He says " you will not talk to my daughter like that don't worry about paying for breakfast today I'll cover it and don't come back" I'm still trying to process everything my jaws just dropped. Like we aren't animals and will not take your food even if it was free you don't talk to anyone like that. So I was asking who this guy was I'm guessing he is one of the owner. Then my friend ask to speak to the so called woman owner thinking she would be rational nope she was no different she acted like an uneducated, unprofessional animal. She comes out and says " that was my husband, and that was my 14 year old daughter you will not talk to her like that. Your never happy, you don't have to come back. We have over 400 orders can't always get all orders right...I still don't see why it's ok for our order to have significant error because of this. As we try to have a conversation explaininng to her what occurred. She was not trying to hear anything she told us to leave her primises and not to come back. Their daughters is a pathetic LIAR!! the waitesss was shocked herself because she seen what occurred and knows. I wouldn't go back to this place if I was paid to, we were treated like animals. And this woman want to say " bye God bless" don't claim God your a devil. In addition when I first got there I ordered a beer I specifically asked for something sweet, she recommended this beer that was sweet yet when the beer came out it was very bitter. She then said "I apologize we ran out of that sweet beer do you still want it" umm no I don't. She then recommend this drink that's lemon and has gen and soda in it. I said ok cool. She brings out this drink it tasted like perfume, had flowers in it very nice but it taste nothing like the lemon She recommend so I told her and she said " ohh I'm sorry we ran out of the lemon ingredient they didn't tell me until after." I'm like ok.. so the entire time they have made numerous errors and the treat us like shit. This place is horrible and should not even be in business. I was so upset and had to leave this review to let others know about this restaurant,claim they are Godly. Super impressed. What a great breakfast spot. The logo outside is in this great 70s font that is very eye catching. The inside aesthetic is spot on. Very cozy with great lighting. It's not crowded for space either like most brunch spots! The plates are an old style painted enamel plate which really brings the vibe together. The chorizo tacos were incredible. The frittata looked amazing. I am a front of house manager at a restaurant myself, and I'll say that the staff were very friendly and the service was perfect. I had brunch with some friends here and it was delicious. I can not remember the name of the dish i had and can not find it on the menu online. It was an open faced biscuit topped with bacon, 2 fried eggs, then smothered with tomato gravy! Soooo good! I tried some of my friends Hashed Out and will be going back to get it. Their hash browns are like nothing I've had before. Crunchy, perfectly shaped, tiny potato pieces. Yum! One recommendation my vegetarian friend had was if they added in some peppers and onions into the side of hashbrowns then they would be even better. The Hash Out pretty much does this but with breakfast meat added. The fried chicken looked amazing as well. Also they have $5 mimosas during the week! This was the icing on the cake! I had such high hopes for Rising Son, but I'm done. Service is always friendly and first class, but food coming out of the kitchen is barely edible. This was my 6th or 7th time in and there were two tables of us and not one person was excited about their order. It's a shame because Avondale needs a good place to eat with upscale offerings. First time: I was there in the morning around 10am, alone. I sat at the bar, which was the only choice I was given though the place was sparsely attended at the time. After I ordered grits and shrimp, my server at the bar never once asked how was the food?, can I get you more water?, not very attentive nor accommodating - I was the only person sitting at the bar. I paid my check and tipped 13% - I debated on 10% but thought it was too strong of a message. When it was time for me to leave, I was not thanked by any on the staff for dining there; no customary, "come back again" spoken to me. In fact, with the exception of the owner(assumption) greeting me, I felt invisible. I WILL comeback there b/c I know the staff probably reads these comments, just to gauge whether the service has improved. read more

Wow, this place is the Jam! The staff, management and Chef are always super nice when I come in... Chef Hudson always comes out and says hello when he can, really knows how to feed the soul. Katherine, one of the owners always lets me know what home made Jam they have for the week, and the staff is always helpful and there for you when you need them. Hands down one of my favorite restaurant in the city right now..I make my way out every Tuesday and if you haven't had the chance to try this place you are missing out on something special!!! Made it back to Rising Son today and enjoyed it all! Even tried one of their signature sodas, Plum and Tarragon. It was so refreshing! The server was very friendly and attentive. The fresh fruit side was probably our favorite. Seasonal peaches, plums, blackberries and blueberries mixed with fresh herbs. Yum! read more

MONUMENTAL FAILURE!!!!!! Waitstaff with BO that burned my eyes! If you order over easy eggs they do not anticipate that you will perhaps need salt and pepper. Order a biscuit and they do not anticipate the need for butter. No alcohol available. Greatest bacon I ever ate but who cares? Really people get the basics down first! I have to reluctantly revise the review below. I've gone twice since the original review for lunch. The food is still great, I give it five stars. The service has devolved into "we'll get to you" - a two? The atmosphere, on Thursday would be a zero if Yelp allowed zeros. I sat at the bar. To my left a guy and two kids, tenish and fivish sat. I should say the guy sat. The kids whirled and ran and yelled and screamed and cried. I should have known to move or leave as when I sat down the guy to my right, paying his bill, said to one of the owners who was sitting at the bar doing paperwork "that's why I have a vasectomy." She looked at him wanly and said and did nothing as the young hellions ran around the room. She quickly repaired to the back of the building, I'm thinking to avoid the spawn of the devil. The hellions ran the aisles, and here is where the restaurant takes some responsibility rather than the terrible parent that brought them. One of the servers ran around with them yelling and laughing at their "adorable antics." A final note, this wasn't a one off of a restaurant suffering a bad patron. The guy that brought the kids was a regular - he talked to a guy behind the bar the entire time he was there, and his kids were rampaging the room. That is not acceptable to me. Great food or not, I'm not spending money to eat in a poorly run daycare center. And here's the original review. Give the place a shot if you can live with indifferent service and don't see the hellions in the aisles. The food is really good. I wish I lived closer to this place, like right down the street, so I could be a "regular." The food, the room and the service are great. Though I'm usually leery of ordering a pork chop at other than a high end restaurant, for fear of getting a dry hunk of meat, I took the chance and had one with curry potato salad and collards. I'm glad I did, the chop was juicy and flavorful. The room is bright and has an airy feel with large front windows and a high ceiling. The service was great, with not only my server but every other server in the place showing a smile every time I looked around. We stopped in the soap store a few doors down and decided to go to this little restaurant. We got seated in a few minutes which I understand is rare. Our food was very good, my wife says the biscuits were very good. And the coffee, very good. But the part that made this a 5 star review was a server named Jessie. She was awesome. Whoever is making the food at this place is doing a great job. Fresh and tasty! The servers are very polite and welcoming. The manager behind the bar makes some really refreshing drinks/cocktails that we look forward to everytime we go. Went there this morning with the hubby and I have mixed feelings. They're still finding their groove, but the staff were friendly, the menu has good options, the food was yummy, and the prices were generally reasonable (especially for farm-to-table). That said, I wanted to love it and wound up closer to like. The good: The biscuits. I'm not from the south so take that as you will, but I loved it. My eggs were also delicious and just the right amount of runny. My hubby's egg and bacon biscuit sammy was only $5. The menu had good variety with respectable a la cart options (fried chicken! waffles!) and not too many options. I'd rather have a new place do a few things well than a lot of things fine. The okay: The bacon was in nice, thick cut stips, but wasn't at all crunchy (that's my personal preference). The not-so-good: Where's the fruit? I was disappointed to not see any fresh fruit options (because, a. I love me a good waffle with fresh fruit, and b. I expect more on the produce front for farm-to-table restaurants). The bad: My coffee made me kind of sad. It was okay (and probably fancier than it tasted), but why would you serve locally roasted coffee with bad condiments? The coffee credibility goes out the window with land-o-lakes creamer in those little pour packets. They must have better dairy options. Waffle machine was down on our visit. We got the Kickstart and it was good, but I wouldn't call it special. We might eat here again, but I'm not keen on breakfast for $15 per plate. Went on a Saturday for brunch and was quickly seated at the bar. Wonder young lady behind the bar made a great cocktail. We started with the dumplings which were flavorful but was a tad salty. My girlfriend ordered the shrimp and grits and I ordered the pork chops. The grits were great but the pork chops were salty but perfectly cooked. I have been wanting to try this new place for the last month and finally went there for lunch today. I was greeted warmly at the door by one of the owners and then seated promptly. It was a very warm and casual atmosphere and I was impressed with the lunch and breakfast menu that they serve all day. Our service was fantastic, Chelsea was our waitress and she was very attentive and helpful. My lunch was delicious I opted for the meat and three and had fried trout with radishes, broccolini, and creamed spinach. They brought cornbread and I had forgotten to say I would like the biscuit instead. They could not have been more friendly and brought it promptly. My friend had the biscuit Sammy without bacon and it looked delicious. The trout was the most perfectly piece of fried fish I have ever had. All the sides were excellent. The prices are reasonable and overall the best experience I've had at a new restaurant in quite some time. It was a little noisy in there, but it was completely full so I could understand. What a gem in Avondale Estates. The food is delectable and well executed and thoughtful at minimum. I've been 3 times at this point and it never disappoints. I've had their Chicken and Waffles, their hash skillet and the pork chops and grape soda combo and all were phenomenal. The service is always impeccable also and for me that definitely goes a long way. The last visit I had the chef came out with fresh picked plums from their gardner which is a nice touch, but also showed me where their plum jelly was made (delicious too!!). I really hope these folks keep doing what their doing and I look forward to their dinner menu starting in a couple of weeks!!! read more
