Stopped in for the tomato bisque. Despite the claim on the menu, this is unfortunately nothing like the prior Chanterelle bisque. They both have tomatoes. And the similarities end there. This was slightly spicy, had no or minimal cream (addition of some helped slightly), and is a really weird texture - not chunky like Chanterelle's but not smooth, more a coarse purée. And lacking the other veggies that the Chanterelle soup had like the onions. Didn't try the rest of the menu, but when I do come back will avoid the tomato bisque. Really sad as I had understood that they had purchased the original recipe. Which is stellar. The hostess/waitress was lovely as is the location and the rest of the menu looked good. read more

Unfortunately I almost had to walk out due to the server knocking over the entire water pitcher on me. I understand it was an accident which is why I didn't make a big deal however I was disappointed in how the server and restaurant responded. Firstly the server apologized and came back with towels to clean up. I am sure he was a bit flustered, but proceeded to clean the floor, use the same towel to clean the table and then it took too more trips for the server to ask if I wanted a towel. I was mortified and my first thought when this happened was I had to go home immediately because I was soaked. So to not comp a meal was honestly very disappointed. Instead of having my party of 5 leave, I stayed in my wet shorts and top and sat on towels. To top it off when I went to pay the bill the credit card in my phone was wet. Food was meh. After this mishap it took a solid 10 min for our order to get taken, and nothing about the menu was explained, server didn't ask if we had been there before. Party of 2 here on a Saturday evening; seated right away even though the place was definitely busy. Decorated beautifully inside for Christmas. We shared the Bresaola Alla Valtinellese appetizer while enjoying perfectly prepared martinis. Our server was prompt and friendly; great pace throughout our night, no rushing. Hubs had the Lasagna Bolognese and I had the Veal Milanese. We agreed the red sauce is indeed delicious. Don't forget the yummy warm bread (hubs asked for extra) and the crispy fresh mixed greens beet salad. We would definitely return! read more

The place offers, for lunch, soups and salads, sandwiches, and pasta. If you order the soup or the pasta alone, the meal is a bit on the small side. But if you order a combo, you'll get a heavy meal. Went to this restaurant years ago on Capital Hill and enjoyed it as a good family experience (not amazing but solid.) Tried it tonight in Edmonds and was VERY disappointed. Had the bartender as a server and he wasn't particularly attentive. One of our party of four had "chilies" in the plate description and he ordered without. The other three ordered dishes and didn't specify because we didn't know the chefs choice would be spicy. For two of our party, it was literally too spicy to eat. We told the bartender when he came around asking about boxes (he never asked how our meals were) that we wouldn't be taking boxes because it was too spicy to eat. He did nothing. Never asked us if we wanted desert, just brought the bill. We told him the food was too spicy. Did not adjust the bill or offer any apology. Two of our last our Edmunds residents. We tried the dish with just prawns which was in the red sauce which we enjoyed. The chicken Alfredo was pretty good also. We also ordered the veal which is give 3 stars for quality. The shrimp was not fresh seemed like it was frozen not even marrinated it was totally tasteless. Prawn Scampi was so lemony it was uneatable. We had to send it back and they told us that was a common complaint and will likely take it off the menu. If it was a common complaint, why didn't they take it off the menu earlier? Used to love and frequent the cap hill location for date nights and was very excited to see that it was moving closer to me. Unfortunately much of what contributed to the welcoming vibe is gone. Went with my toddler, was barely greeted then led to a table where I was unkindly asked if our toddler needed a high chair. They came back with a mat that they threw brashly onto the floor - it was unnecessarily loud and left dust on my pants as I was sitting across the way. The food was lukewarm when it arrived and whoever was playing host was nowhere to be seen whenever we needed something. The second half of our dinner experience, a younger staff member was back presumably from break and did the regular things like checking in on our table, etc. Overall, it was really awful to be treated that way and we probably won't be going back. read more

Came here for lunch a little after one pm. Happily welcomed, a nice sign. The restaurant was not busy thankfully. Only about four tables occupied at this time. I did go to Chanterelle's, the former location of this spot and enjoyed the food.Heard good things about this former restaurant on Capitol Hill, so eager to try their food here in Edmonds. Was seated and the service was great. Perusing the lunch menu, saw there is a variety of soups, salads, three different sandwiches, and assorted pastas at very reasonable prices, the top rated pasta offering was $13.00. Started out with the macrina bakery bread service. Fresh chewy bread. I love soup, so had to get the minestrone cup. This had a variety of vegetables, zucchini and carrots being especially prominent in a tomato base. Enjoyed this, but the other ingredients often found in minestrone were not there, i.e. beans, spinach, chickpeas. Also tried the pomodoro soup, as I remember fondly the Chanterelle's tomato bisque. Their version was lighter on cream and a depth of tomato base. Was disappointed with this version. Next, ordered two pasta dishes. The first one we enjoyed, although skimpy. The first dish was spinach ravioli. Only five ravioli, in a delicious mushroom sauce. Wish there were more ravioli and additional bread to sop up the mushroom sauce. Five ravioli looked scant for a lunch portion. The second pasta dish was spaghetti bolonese: Love a tomato rich and meaty bolognese. Unfortunately, their version consisted of a vey small amount of sauce. Mostly undressed pasta. Disappointed in the scant amount of sauce in this dish. Ratio sauce to pasta: 2/3 pasta to 1/3 sauce. Wanted dessert, so could choose my favorite tiramisu or cheesecake. Tiramisu had not been properly soaked, the Marsala taste and espresso taste was quite weak. And, the ladyfingers were not soft, just kind of crunchy. Did not like this version. Overall, the service and ambiance are good. The food disappoints with the quality. read more

I might be in the minority here, but I didn't think this Italian restaurant lived up to the hype--despite it coming highly recommended by a friend. I ordered a pizza, Artichoke & Mushroom, which was unlike any I've had before, and not in a good way. The sauce had an odd flavor, the crust was slightly burnt, and the toppings were sparse. To be fair, I'm not a huge pizza fan to begin with, but nothing else on the menu really appealed to me. That said, my wife enjoyed the pizza and especially liked the sauce, so maybe it's just a matter of taste. Our group ordered a variety of dishes: Linguine Allo Vongole - Disappointing. The clams seemed to be minced into the marinara sauce, which left the dish feeling a bit lacking. Lasagna Bolognese - Just okay. Nothing memorable. Fettuccine Bolognese and Spaghetti with Meatballs - The folks who ordered these were happy, but they're generally easy to please. Handmade Gnocchi Al Sugo - The standout. The person who ordered it absolutely loved it. Penne with Roasted Pepper Pesto - Another hit. Full of flavor and well received. One thing that stood out: the restaurant was surprisingly empty during our visit. On the plus side, the prices were reasonable--especially for Italian food. Visited this restaurant yesterday with my partner for lunch - oh my goodness, SOOOOO GOOD. First of all, the service was great, our waiter was super friendly and attentive. The ambience was lovely, it was a sunny day out and we got to sit next to the window and people watch while we ate. Very very cute place, clean and comfortable. Our food was delicious - we were craving sammies, so I got the special, which was a chicken parmesan sandwich! I loved everything about it - the chicken was cooked perfectly, yummy gooey cheese, and a nice homemade marinara sauce on it + more sauce on the side. Very good portion size, I got to take a little home which tasted just as good the next day. My partner got the chicken milanese sandwich - it was refreshing because of the arugula and cherry tomatoes on it, and the chicken was perfectly breaded! My partner especially liked the bread, because he hates when sandwiches have overly hard / crunchy bread that's hard to bite into - this place doesn't have that. :) We shared a caesar salad, the dressing was super good, and they put freshly ground pepper on top which is a nice touch. 5 stars for service and the overall ambiance 5 stars for the Italian sodas and salads 3 stars for the food itself Hubs and I popped by the Saturday after Valentine's Day for our evening out. He has been researching all of the local Italian eateries knowing that I am a gnoochi lover and have been craving it since one of our first Valentine's dinners. Hands down the service is very friendly and we were seated right away - though we arrived early to ensure we weren't waiting too long on purpose. We sort of knew what we wanted ahead of time so that made our ordering a lot faster than usual. The salads came out and were very fresh - hubs added anchovies to his (ick! haha!) and enjoyed his Ceasar very much. Not wanting to drink, we went with Italian sodas, both were very good and exactly what we needed, even if we were going to head over to Molly Moon's after! The mains came flying out after. Hubs very much enjoyed his carbonara while my gnocchi was sadly bland and VERY mushy. the gnocchi held their shape until I tried to eat them, at which point they melted into a goopy, gummy mess. As someone who makes gnocchi from scratch often, it definitely should not goop into a weird wet clay. The sauce was also not right, it seemed too watery, and even with the added cracked pepper and Kraft parmesan (not freshly shredded), there was no flavor. I don't know if it's because of growing up in Chicago or from years of having homemade pasta but yeah - maybe we will be back to try the pizza? Ristorante Machiavelli is one of Seattle's OG Italian restaurants on Capitol Hill since 1988. What brought me there several times was the Spaghetti alla Carbonara per The Stranger's Dan Savage. Looking at that 2017 post, amazing how good ol' inflation reflects on price hikes. When long time restaurant Chanterelle closed in downtown Edmonds, I wondered what would take its place. The vicinity whether downtown, the waterfront, on Hwy 99 has quite the dining scene in the northend. Ristorante Machiavelli decided to give the historical site a refresh and is having their soft opening. Today (12/23/23), all I had was a mocha earlier. No breakfast, lunch, and didn't touch any of the baked goods from my pastry run. Ready for some serious carbs! Downtown Edmonds is festive and lots of foot traffic for the holidays. I'm glad to have snagged one of the 3 hour street parking spots a few blocks away. I was warmly greeted upon entry and seated at a two top by the window which enabled me to people watch with passersby along the sidewalk. No need for reservations and totally casual here. Menu was straightforward with starters, pizza, pasta, beverages, and dessert. I was provided water and bread service. Passed on any apps, salad, or a cocktail. I ordered the Fettucine Carbonara ($20.95) - pasta al dente, generous bacon, very garlicky sauce, and added freshly cracked black pepper and parmesan. Just like I remembered, but fettucine not spaghetti. Bread slices were perfect to sop up the garlicky sauce. Entree was a bit salty for me though. There a bit of a pause waiting for dessert. Dessert was a choice of either cheesecake or a tiramisu chocolate mousse confection. Dessert finally arrived with a fresh fork. I was able to write this review while waiting, lol. The ladyfingers would be better if soaked in espresso or marsala...kind of crunchy. Saw via bill, this dessert was called Diplomatico ($12). Yikes, but sizable and easily shareable. I noticed this place was packed since I arrived 90 minutes ago, both the bar and main dining area. Good sign. You'd never think this was a soft opening just yesterday. Service and atmosphere was mostly seamless. Contactless payment, paid via QR code. I took screenshots just in case though of this transaction. knowing full well that lunch service was implemented only a month ago, we were expecting some growing pains, but our disappointment was not with the service but with the food. at 12:15 on a tuesday, Ristorante Machiavelli had maybe 3 tables occupied. we were promptly and cheerfully greeted, seated, and presented with menus. the corner windows in the dining area brightened up the restaurant. the lunch menu is very abbreviated: mostly soups, salads, 3 sandwiches, and assorted pastas at very reasonable prices. the most expensive pasta plate was $13.00. we passed on the $6 macrina bakery bread service. toscano cup of soup $7: the soup had all the necessary ingredients such as sausage, greens, other assorted veggies, beans, but light on the cream, and extremely salty. now, i am a salt-head. my doctor hates me. i use both soy sauce and salt on my eggs. i felt my tongue burn from the salt in the soup. minestrone cup of soup $6: chunky veggies. lots of zucchini and carrots. seemed more like tomato-y veggie soup. pomodoro cup of soup $6: we did not order this but we wondered if this soup is intended to be a placeholder for the highly anticipated return of Chantrelle's famous tomato bisque ? we skipped the sandwiches and went straight for the pasta. spaghetti bolonese: very, very, light sauce consisting of bits of tomato and meat. it was not until we dug into the bottom of the plate of spaghetti, we discovered the rest of (the very light) sauce under the spaghetti that had not been tossed in the kitchen. if it were not for the meat bits, i would have mistaken this pasta plate for a puttanesca that was missing the olives, anchovies, and capers. it was a nice, light sauce but not the robust red-sauce bolognese i'm used to. spinach ravioli: yum! i loved the plentiful mushroom sauce. i wish i had a piece of bread accompanying the plate to sop up the delicious sauce. luckily i still had the spoon from my cup of soup so i was able to spoon the sauce like a soup. there were 5 raviolis swimming in the sauce on my place. carbonara: not available for lunch. the pasta plates were small, even considering the lunch prices and the food looked naked and lonely on the plate. dessert seemed expensive. i would have guessed the service would have been the challenge at lunch, rather than the food. we left hungry. 3 stars for cheerful service. read more

We were so sad to see they closed their Capitol Hill location. It was the first restaurant I ate at after moving to Seattle in 2000 and has been a staple date night location since. Their location in Edmonds is definitely the same menu but different feel, more open, well-lit and simply not as intimate and romantic of a setting. I was happy to see that the recipe for their alfredo is unchanged though I didn't feel the service was up to par as it had been in Seattle. There are absolutely growing pains and we will be back to try them again soon! read more

Was a long time patron of the Machiavelli's downtown/Cap Hill Seattle, so was super excited to see this open a couple yrs back in my local Edmonds. Although we were a fan of Chanterelle, this was a welcomed addition to the neighborhood. But very disappointing overall after our second visit this wk. Some other adults in our party ordered the pizzas, which were the same size as our kid's pizzas (for about double the price). And the quality was reminiscent of either frozen pizza or a version of TJ's premade dough. Not good! The toppings (ie mushrooms or raw pepperoni lunch meat) were then dumped on the pizza after baking separately with little care or thought. I ordered the chicken parm w/ side of spaghetti, which came served on a bread plate and dripping with watered down sauce - similar to the bread plates that were part of the table setting. Felt lazy and sloppy. We were pretty disappointed with our first visit last yr when it was obvious the new owners made nearly no changes to the restaurant layout or even the tables, chairs or dish-ware that the Chanterelle owners used (which was more family country diner style). But was trying hard to give another chance - and both the lack of quality and inflated prices left us all with yet another unpleasant experience. read more

Had a mellow Friday night at Machiavelli, a cozy local Italian spot. Sat at the bar top and enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere. My friend and I each had a mocha martini - hers was non-alcoholic, which was great since they offer a full NA menu. We also tried the caprese, which was nice to share. It could've used a bit more flavor, but the service was fantastic, and they brought out extra balsamic, salt, and pepper to adjust it to our taste. My Rating Rationale: Even though this establishment claimed to be a Seattle staple, I gave this place 2 stars because it's new and I think they're still trying to find their groove. The ambiance is fine. A bit too liud for me. The staff was cool. But the food was really bad. They need better recipes, fresher ingredients, and/or better back of the house. Why open another Italian Restaurant in Edmonds? Replacing Chantelle's (sp?), an Edmonds staple for as long as I can remember, is but yet, another Italian restaurant. Why?Outside of being a Mexican restaurants, this is likely the last genre Edmonds needed to add. Just on Main Street you have Moto, Mo's, Fire and the Feast, and, heck, I think you can order a pizza at Claire's across the street. So, I assumed that this place must arrogantly (in a good Eula's) have something so different that there is rhyme, reason, and recipes, that justify but yet another Tuscany triumph. They must really know pizza. AMBIENCE: The place was rather packed on a Thursday night. People were chatting in the could be romantic dimmed lighting. Maybe with this energy, my thought of having something a bit different, say, Brazilian, Korean, Vietnamese, Latin, Ethiopian, Indian, or something that focused on Eastern European dishes. That would have been a nice addition and change to the landscape--a palate teaser. But here we are with another place to order a Pizza. The ambiance was much too formal for the quality of food served. Thus it made it awkward and the poor food quality even more pronounced. FOOD: So my friend and I did. We ordered pizza. They were personal, Approximately 11", $17, pies. We both thought they were among the worst pizza we had in years. They were both hard, dry, flavorless, and the featured toppings were just tasteless. I've made Safeway frozen pizza that delivered much better. $2.99 pizza pockets are much better. It was near, but not quite, call Robert Irving quality. I felt bad cause I suggest the place. But sat there wish we were at Fire & the Feast. SERVICE: The female bartender was great. Social and happy. The waiter was cool. The food took a noticeably long time, even though we were able to spend the time chatting. I don't wish bad voodoo on any restaurant. I know they're trying and it's many people's livelihood. But after that meal, I don't know how they can make it for a year. I don't know why anyone would return here. The competition for Italian food in the bowl alone is rough. Pizza you have the much better pizza and Italian establishments on the outer crust of the bowl waiting for you. Not to mention, the other many culinary choices, on Main, 5th, Dayton, 4th, and down between the railroad tracks and salt water sound. We went there with my family. Overall, the interior is fine, a bit noisy but expected. Service is good too, nothing to call out. But the food. We ordered antipasto plate, Caesar, carbonara, cioppino, and kids Milanese. Appetizers were fine, antipasto was decent, I would have appreciated some bread to go with it. It had tapenade after all. But good portion. Same thing for the Caesar, it was good but again, a lot of good Caesar salads around here. But then the main dishes. The carbonara was the worse one I've had, and I am pretty lenient when it comes to how traditional it is made. I just expect this rich porky, eggy and cheesy pasta. You want to add bacon? Fine. A dash of cream? Eh, ok. Garlic? Whatever. But this one had none of what carbonara is. The worse part: there was no salt. In a pasta where half the ingredients are supposed to be salty! There was no sauce either, it was watery, barely enough cheese and the bacon was floppy. But so much garlic. Pasta was fine, just average. Cioppino was small like half a dozen mussels/clams with some mahi, and very average. Kids Milanese was mostly burnt, like 20% black, but it's chicken with fried breading, so it was edible. Portions were normal, but we didn't finish our plates, not worth the calories. I think I am tolerant when it comes to Italian food. Sure, I do prefer traditional Italian, but I am perfectly happy with American Italian if it leaves you with that satisfied, rich food, "ate too much", homey feel when you leave. None of that there. We left hungry, and annoyed that we paid so much for such bland, bad food. It's been almost a year since they've opened, so I don't think they still have the "new restaurant" excuse anymore.
