Okay SO I NEED EVERYONE TO READ THIS BEFORE READING THE REVIEWS THAT PAINT THIS SALON IN A WAY THAT CAN HAVE YOU JUDGING WITHOUT EVEN GIVING THEM A CHANCE. Because of reviews I read on here before arriving today to the salon I was nervous & had a negative mindset. One thing I don't do is play about my hair because #1 my hair is part of my job & #2 I will spend as much $ as I need too in order to get the best. As someone who has been loyal to warren tricomi since a teen I am so happy and glad I gave Rita Hazan a chance. I arrived actually bringing up the negative reviews that are on here to the front staff nervous to sign a waiver paranoid about what I read on here. Not only of course I am sure it made the staff uncomfortable but at the end of my visit it was totally wrong of me to pre judge even if it was not personal and I had pure intentions in protecting myself. The staff at the salon we're so patient and kind to me which gave me instant regret judging them in the manner that I did. People make mistakes & accidents happen do to many reasons. This happened some years ago,, and I should have written a review at the time, but to be honest it was so upsetting I didn't want to think about it. In a nutshell, this place damaged my hair so badly it had to all be cut off, and this was 2 years after I had already lost my hair because of chemotherapy. For context, when I started getting my hair colored there, I had lost my hair the year before, and when it started growing back I wanted to do something fun to my hair to make the process of it growing back less depressing. So I had the colorist dye my brown hair blond. I liked how it turned out, so I kept going back. The final time I went, I don't know what happened, but when I was at the back bar after my service, I noticed I was shedding a lot of hair. The colorist came over to check me, but said it was just normal shedding and that it happened to everyone after bleaching. But when I got home and got a proper look at the top and back of my head, I realized that actually a large amount of my hair had snapped off close to the root. I went to my regular stylist at the time and he confirmed the my hair had broken off, and there was nothing to be done but crop the rest of my hair very short again. It was devastating and I felt like I was losing my hair to cancer all over again. At the time, I just wanted to move on, so I never went back to the salon or asked them to remedy it. I also partly blamed myself for thinking it was a good idea to dye post-chemo hair blonde. But I am certain the colorist must have seen how damaged my hair was when she looked at it, and she never said a word about it, or offered to fix it, or reached out to me later, or anything. I was unsure because of the mixed reviews, but I had the best experience during my visit last week. Amy and Melissa at reception were super sweet and welcoming. I only had to wait 5 mins for my appointment. Lamont did my hair color and it came out even better than the picture I showed him. He adjusted the color to better suit my skin tone and I'm obsessed with it. Miguel styled my hair and it was one of the best blowouts I've ever gotten. Overall, I understand that the price is high, but I've paid more for less at other places and have spent HOURS there. I was in and out of Rita Hazan's in about 90 minutes and was fully satisfied. I have gone to Lamont (a colorist) for nearly a year now, and he is so talented! I get single process highlights to cover gray hair. Recently, I went to a facialist and she thought I was a real blonde (I'm not even close to one originally) - that is how good Lamont is at matching the color to one's complexion. I wanted to write this to warn other people from going here. This is not a review about the individual colorists and stylists doing their jobs - it's not their fault and everyone I've gotten a service from has been great individually. But this salon is run like a factory - maximum output at minimum cost (to them; the cost to you is vastly overpriced for what you receive). I originally booked for a balayage with Gio; at the last minute the salon changed my appointment to highlights with Carlina - the first issue here. When I got my color done, the colorist was so overbooked she was working on three people at once. It was really frustrating having to watch her work on multiple people while I was sitting and waiting for something to be done, or my bleach to be checked to see if it was lifting properly. Not only was she having to rush around, but her assistant did literally everything but apply the bleach. For $500+, I expected a bit more attention from the main colorist. When my color was done, it turned out that I had to book a blow dry on top of the color (maybe that's my fault - I've never had to do that before though). Again, for $500+, that seems a bit ridiculous. So, that meant that my colorist had already moved on and was working on her other clients - she didn't even check my color after I had finished or ask me if I liked the result. I want to clarify, I don't think it's her fault at all or that she didn't care. She simply just didn't have the time to do these things since their booking is so overlapped. The entire experience was very impersonal, very rushed, and honestly stressful since I was worried the whole time that a big mistake would be made because they were unable to pay attention to my hair. Full disclosure - I'm coming from a place where my previous stylist only had one client at a time and was very attentive to my hair, my concerns, and my needs throughout the entire appointment for the same price point. This place is ridiculously overpriced and you can get similar work and better attention elsewhere. read more

TL;DR Carlina is talented but only expect top performance/care if you're a celebrity or social media influencer. If you're not happy, there will be no follow-up. Ok Ladies and Gentlemen, now the good stuff: I've contemplated updating my review for a while. I don't usually like to post negative reviews, especially when they could hurt an individual's business. In the end, I'm updating because I feel others should know what I experienced so that they may make an informed decision. The first few times I saw Carlina, she did awesome work on my red hair. She truly did listen to my concerns and we were making progress toward my ideal color. Even though my color wasn't the perfect shade at the end of each of those times, I was patient because I knew achieving that perfect shade takes time and little tweaks. Unfortunately, as time went on, Carlina and I didn't seem to be on the same page. She spent less and less time with me and rushed through my service. Consultations became 10 second affairs where she clearly wasn't listening to me. For example, no matter what, I'd always ask for a natural red color that still pops. That my hair be natural looking was always key! Carlina eventually became so lax in listening to my input/ comments/ wishes that my hair became a bright, bright unnatural red (to this day, comments are still made at work about it). I started to get really frustrated. Somehow, I thought it was my hair that simply would never attain the shade I wanted. Somehow, I still had full faith in Carlina (likely because of reviews of her excellent work). As I was increasingly unhappy with my red, I proposed the idea of going back to my previous bright blonde. I did my research and found a few examples of transition shades (since we couldn't safely go platinum blonde in one day). I was very clear that I did not want to do blonde if it had to be one of those shades. Carlina explained that the transition shade was unavoidable. I decided to stick with red. Carlina dyed my roots but did not put any color on my ends. I thought she was going to do a gloss at the sink. At the bowl, she ended up doing a bleach rinse. I did not know this was occurring. When I got back to the chair I had ORANGE hair, the exact transition shade I said I never, ever wanted. Carlina explained that she did it in case I wanted to go blonde. I told her, again, I didn't want blonde and wanted to stick with red. I was almost in tears during my blowout. I went back to Carlina (who was washing her hair) and explained the problem. She put a gloss on my hair but the ends were ruined from the bleach and would not hold on to the color. By the time the blowout was done Carlina had left the salon. I paid roughly $500 (with some products to help my damaged hair) for the experience. I called the salon to complain and try to get an appointment to fix it. There weren't any upcoming openings and they suggested I wait. The manager said that Carlina might reach out to me, she didn't. I called back a week later and cancelled future appointments and explained that I wouldn't be using Carlina anymore. The manager again said she would speak with Carlina about the situation and a possible refund. This occurred about 6 months ago and still no follow-up. No refund was ever processed. In the end: Do I think Carlina is talented? Yes. Does she spend the appropriate time and care on your hair if you're not an influencer or celebrity? No. Can this result in Carlina messing up your hair? Yes. Will the Rita Hazan Salon do anything if you're not happy? No. read more

CARLINA SHOULD COME WITH A WARNING LABEL While I appreciate the owner, Rita Hazan's outmost professionalism in attempting to remedy the situation with a free of charge color correction, I feel it's important for others to know what happened to me. Especially because I just had to cut 3 inches off my severely damaged hair because of Carlina.. I have been Carlina's loyal client for over a year and she always did my blonde hair. I trusted her. I came in with beautiful, cool tone blonde hair opting for something more low maintenance for the fall and asked Carlina to put a few lowlights in my hair but keep most of the blond and the cool shade. She dumped dark dye ALL OVER my blonde. When she dried my hair, I was horrified. My ends had a green tint to them. She started to frantically re-bleach my hair which caused me to have white stripes and a brassy color base. She then proceeded to put on more dark dye and re-bleach again. The entire ordeal lasted 5 hours as I was hysterically crying in her chair. Please see the final result. When I told her she needed to fix my hair she stormed out of the salon while my hair was still wet...leaving me with the receptionist who attempted to charge me $450 for this mess....my hair is now severely damaged. The worst part is that Carlina still hasn't apologized or acknowledged what she's done to my hair. I'm still in shock at what happened. I reached out to Rita Hazan herself and she provided a color correction free of charge! Rita is very talented and professional but please avoid Carlina at all costs. read more

I've been wanting to go blonde for a loooong time, but have been told by hairstylists it'd be next to impossible due to my naturally jet black, coarse hair. In comes Carlina -- and boom, after one session I am an ashy blonde . Seriously, she is a master at her craft and I would recommend her to anyone in NYC! Mylo did my blow out, along with another gentleman (can't remember his name but he is from New Orleans) they both did a fantastic job and were SUCH a pleasure to be around. Yes, its pricy but you get what you pay for! The only reason this review isn't five stars is because of the man at the front desk with the blonde hair with the man-bun. When I review a business, I take into account not only the quality of the work, but also the customer service. Unfortunately, this gentleman put a damper on the otherwise all star experience I had at Rita Hazan. Not sure what his name is because he barely looked up, but he was very impersonable and quite honestly, seemed miserable to be there. For such a high end salon, I highly recommend hiring front desk attendants who are willing to greet you with a smile. Customers who come to your salon are spending a lot of money and the customer service experience should be a pleasant one. Not sure what this man's deal was but I would highly recommend changing up your attitude. You are the first interaction people have with the salon, and first impressions come along way. Alright. So this is my very first review and I just HAD to rave about Michèl! She really transformed my hair and gave me the ultimate Beyoncé/Red Carpet experience. I had never colored my hair, so I was very nervous at first. But, she made me feel very comfortable and really took care of me. This is going to be a long and truthfull review. I had (2) visits here both w/ the same colorist (which i wont name). The first visit was nice-and pleasant. I was checked in and seated by my colorist's assistant. She was really nice. However i noticed other clients were getting asked if they wanted anything to drink and i wasnt, so i didnt say anything. My colorst was nice-end result was okay, as my final ombre'esq look would take various process-and time. I got a cut from Jennifer, and she was really sweet. I have gotten cut and blow outs multiple time and at different places, she didnt make me look glamourous like i had expected tho-since this place is soo high end. i looked okay (honestly i got better cut and dry else wear and came out looking like a million bucks). At the almost end of my hair cut the assistant comes back to ask me if i wanted any thing to drink-major fail! I left paying over $700 for some thing i could have probably gotten done else where for way better price and service. Came back again for part 2-horribe. To begin with, the Colorist had me sitting in the chair for 30 min plus after my appointment and took (2) other clients who came after me.....he made me wait while he did their hair and i just sat there. I did not like the color, felt like crying when i saw it-had to have them tone it down- and to make matters worse the colorist wanted to argue with me, and i felt like he missed certain spots on my head and it just looked soo awkward-so all he did was tone it down and didnt even try to say okay lets fix it.... Its suppose to look ombre ish which it does not al all-and I blow dry my own hair which wasnt part of the service- other salons include cut dry and style etc. thats not the point tho- i am paying $500+ for color-least u can do is dry my hair-then they passed me on to a NON experienced assistance who didnt know what the hell she was doing TRYING to blow dry my hair-but pulling it out and noting it all up-i was soo embarrased-and just told her id do it my self because i was in a rush. All in all i spent over $1000 on my hair and it doenst look anywhere near what i had wanted and truthfully i hated my experience there- its not about the $$$ but if the service and end results were good then i wouldnt have given this rating. This place has a rep for being the celebrity go to spot, but honestly i regret taking the plung and coming here- i am soo dissappointed and feel like crying every time i look at my hair. For people looking for a nice salon- do not come here- its tooo over hyped-stylist are just over hyped and i didnt see anything exceptional about this salon except for it's location in the city. Carlina Ortega is my colorist, and she's amazing! I've been pink since I first saw her, and she always nails the color and shading -- she always listens to my vague ideas and knows how to bring them to life, so it's always fun switching up the shades or highlighting my roots, instead of just bleaching, etc. She clearly knows what she's doing from start to finish, and she makes the time spent in the salon fly by. I got my hair done here with Carlina and had a horrible experience. I first got to the salon and had to wait one hour and a half past my appointments because she had "different clients and was overbooked." Then, as soon as I waited long for my appointment I showed her pictures of what I wanted: brown golden highlights very natural subtle for the summer. She then proceeded to damage and dye my hair blonde (when I never asked) makes my whole head blonde and damaged all my roots completely after I've been preserving my hair from damage for a long time..... The hair after finished ended up looking like a zebra black yellow stripy look. For days I've hid my hair in a hat, and have been embarrassed about going out because it is so horrific. The root dye isn't even even. If you are looking for someone who is gonna be careful with your hair, Carlina is not that person because she is rushed and works with multiple clients at one time. You would think that for $600 + tip the hair would come out good but it's a whole scam regime to ruin your hair. After complaining and calling several times in hopes to fix my damaged hair, I got another appointment to fix it. It was the most rushed appointment took 5 minutes in my hair and I don't even know what she did to my hair. But it is currently wet and when I went to the salon I was told to " dry my hair myself" I was taken to the hair dryer in the most condescending way and told to dry my hair there as if I wasn't good enough to afford another $100 blowout after my damaged hair... so I have just now left the salon in tears and annoyed because I just paid over $700 to get my hair damaged and be dis respected. This is truly disgusting, I will be spreading the word, and make sure none of my friends go to Rita hazan. I will be sure to spread the word to people who work in fashion. I have been to countless hair salons, some that have damaged my hair etc, but disrespect is another thing. This salon is the epitome of talk. If you are looking to damage your hair come here. Go see Nicole! Worth every penny. My hair is light blonde and I had gone to a few cheap salons and experimented with darkening it and then trying to go back to blonde and it looked TERRIBLE. I was convinced my hair would never be pretty or natural looking again. Wrong. Nicole got it looking just like natural. She was patient and did some touch ups until I was 100% happy - she didn't want me walking out until it was perfect. She's also so nice and friendly - no wonder celebrities love her. Had a great experience with Carlina and her assistant. Carlina gave me some professional guidance regarding what I had in mind versus what she felt would be better for regrowth and skintone. I was happy with the results and will definitely be back to see her. The representatives at the front desk were also very kind and helpful. The only negative is I guess a bit more related to my own naïveté. During the blowout I was asked if i wanted to trim off the dead ends...i said great just a trim...I had a bit of a shock when I paid the bill. I get that the stylist is different from the colorist...but if customers are already paying $500 for color to charge $250 to trim ends is a little over-the-top in my opinion. I accept responsibility for not asking the question of how much for a trim (that took less than 5 minutes). I'm always a little bit apprehensive about coloring my hair. I just can't/ and don't want to find the time to touch it up every 6 weeks. That said, I still wanted something different... almost ombre, but in a subtler way that would grow out nicely. I went in to see Carlina, and she colored my hair in January... it is now almost May, and I still get compliments regularly about the color job she did. It still looks as beautiful as it did on day one- and I couldn't be happier. It's grown out beautifully, and I'm finally ready to go and have a touch up next month. Incredible salon. Michél McKrieth colored my hair and I couldn't be happier with the results! I got my hair colored and cut here a few months ago. I went in for balayage and a haircut .My hair was fried from the bleach( I wasn't new to bleach, my hair was already blonde) .The hair cut was an absolute nightmare. Liam cut my hair and he obviously did not understand what I wanted which was very simple, a trim and a light curtain bang. He was scissor happy and hacked my hair. I had a blunt looking hair cut with these horrendous bangs that started way too far back. When I started to get upset during the hair cut he wouldn't listen and told me to calm down. I had two people besides him parting and combing my hair and I think that's too many people for a haircut. He's lucky I still tipped him out of courtesy. I didn't complain in person Bc I don't believe in that. I had to call the next day and let them know that I wasn't happy, the manager let me come back and get the hair cut fixed but by then so much of my beautiful long hair was gone and there wasn't much the girl could do without hacking more. So after tipping 7 people (all the assistants and hair dryer/washer) and shelling out all that $, I was left with damaged hair and the shortest hair I've had in years. I'm still trying to get my hair back to it's normal length and I'm still not able to see my old hairdresser Bc I have to nurse my hair back to health from the over processing with the bleach!!!! I worked here for a very short while answering phones and emails in the back office. At the time I was pursuing a career as an actress/model and was told in that during downtime I would be allowed to use the computer to submit for gigs. One day I forgot to delete one of my pictures from the computer before I left. It was from a lingerie shoot. The next day, that image was the wallpaper on every computer in the office. The manager had found my picture and set it, full screen size, to everyone's computer. I felt humiliated. She fired me 2 hours later but still expected me to finish out the day. When I asked about the image on everyone's desktop, she said "yes, I did that" with all the confidence in the world. Needless to say, I did not finish the day. I wanted to sue them, but found out that shaming and humiliating someone at work isn't a crime. I've been going to Carlina (color) for 5 years now. I cannot sing her praises enough. I have unruly, thick, dry, hair that I've dyed red for over a decade. When I came to Carlina I had 8 different shades on my head, none of them natural looking (Imagine a cheap little mermaid wig at 3am on Halloween ) and the texture was similar a bath mat. Carlina listen to what I wanted and suggested the perfect light Auburn shade that looked natural and matched my skin tone beautifully. The color she uses doesn't give my hair that 'straw' feel that so many dyes do after a few washes. Over the years we've tweaked my shade both more light/ coppery and also to a darker brownish red. It always comes out gorgeous (one time I wasn't in love with the color and came back 3 days later- she worked with me until we got it right) Yes Carlina is very busy but she really just knows her stuff, works quickly, and always makes room in her schedule for her clients. I don't think I've ever had to wait more than a few days to get an appointment. Carlina is the best hair colorist in NYC! I had never colored my hair before and was really nervous to make the change to red. After reading reviews, I decided to go see her, and it was the best decision ever. She always listens, offers advice, makes me feel really comfortable, and checks in to make sure I'm happy and feel good about everything. I've been going to her for a year now and we've worked on making my color absolutely perfect and what I was looking for. She is sweet, kind, thoughtful, and incredibly talented. Never in a million years would she ever treat any client with disrespect or mismanage their hair. I barely even had to pay bc i received a gift card here and it was still a heartbreaking experience. It has zero to do with the money. I've always been terrified of getting my hair cut/done and, unfortunately, this place solidified every fear. Place is awesome- looking inside and makes you feel like you're in great hands. Really cool looking. They switched up my stylist last second and i received the most scarring and brutal haircut of my life. I went in to get a trim and left with hair about 10 inches shorter. This was well over a year ago and I'm still avoiding cameras. Had the highest of hopes and expectations. I hope you all have a much better experience. read more

I have never paid more money, nor have I had a worse color job. Basically, the stylist suggested I have a single process to lighten my base along with my regular highlights.. my hair was horrifyingly brassy, so much so that i had to go back twice to try to have it fixed. The stylist was very sweet and nice, and i'm sure usually talented, so I feel bad having to write this review. I ultimately decided it was worth a point in the bad karma dept when the new stylist I went to a consultation for, recommended I go back and demand complimentary color and highlights until it was exactly how i wanted (which she said would take her a few times). She also told me that this salon is famous for suggesting single process along with highlights, so they keep customers (a.k.a. Park Avenue princesses??!) coming back more frequently. Well, I may have orange hair, but at least I didn't get suckered into the trap more than once! read more

Overall I had a great experience with Carlina Ortega. She is masterful with color and really understands how to achieve the right color for your complexion. She is also amazing at looking at photos and matching that to your expectations. She really knows how to apply color and her reccomendations are excellent. It takes tremendous skill to look at a picture and replicate that on a client. Carlina is also good at explaining why a certain color won't work for you or why a certain process is done. Here are all the things that make this a 5 star salon: 1) The colorists are really really talented and good at their jobs. They are truly artists. 2) Runs like clockwork. I was nervous that a timer would be missed or that my hair would be over processed but that didn't happen. 3) The assistants are great and work to make the client comfortable. 4) The master stylists work in tandem with their assistant and appear to teach them. But it never feels like the master stylist is absent. 5) They use high quality products and tools. Cons: 1) For the price I was honestly expecting a take home package of products that I could use on my first wash and condition after the color. Even if they were sample sizes, that would have made me feel confident about caring for my hair. There was no sort of after care tips. It was really odd since Rita has her namesake line so it would have been great advertisement and a way for the client to try the products that were used in the salon. 2) For the price of my blowout, I was expecting a bit more. My roots were not as sleek as I normally get them. And my hair was quite poofy after leaving the salon. I didn't feel comfortable asking for my hair to be flat ironed or trimmed as I felt it would have resulted in an exorbitant charge/been told that there wasn't enough time. If you're paying $85 for a simple blowout you should get your hair styled the way that you want. 3) They should have runners to get the clients drinks, food etc. The assistants have enough to focus on and I had to ask several times for coffee that I never got. 4) I came from DC to visit the salon. After spending so much money, I sort of felt like I was being nickel and dimed. Everything is ala cart and that was a bit frustrating since you are paying so much. I never received an itemized receipt for all my services. I wish I knew what exactly I paid for. read more

I usually don't splurge like this on haircare but decided to give a try at least once in my life. Needless to say, I have been spoiled ! (which won't be so good on my wallet in the future haha). I LOVED the experience at Rita Hazan. The facility was very clean and brightly lit. The staff were friendly and greeted me by the front desk, gave me a robe, and escorted me to Danielle's station. I was immediately asked if I wanted something to drink and was offered a plethora of magazine options. Danielle was super friendly and asked me a lot of questions about what I wanted to do. I came in dark brown hair and wanted to come out a blonde. This is also the first time in my life I have ever been totally blonde- so it was going to be a big change. I figured if I was going to get such a drastic change, I should try the best there is out there. They sure didn't disappoint! Danielle and I reviewed color options, and decided the best course of action for me and my hair would be lots of foils (least amount of damage, no full head bleach, and my base was right for the color I wanted she said). She and another assistant worked on my foils, then Danielle followed up with two glazes to get the perfect shade for my complexion. I loved the way the color came out. It was beautiful! (I posted pics to the Rita Hazan yelp page) It looked absolutely natural and golden blonde. She also explained maintenance of this color to me and let me know when I should come in for a touch-up. I am actually going to be going in next week, however Danielle will be out on vacation. I made an appointment with Alex this time and I am very excited to see how it will go!
