My son has a Moon and Stars pillowcase that he's had that's about 12 years old and it has given it's all to loving him. Since they came in pairs, he usually has one and I have the other with the good intention of patching up a wear here and a tear there when I can. Well, that intention has been going on for about a year or three now, so I finally decided I needed some professional help. I went to the first place that I saw on Yelp. The guy asked to see what I was talking about. I barely took the pillowcase out of the bag when he forcefully said 'no', shook his head, and might as well have made a cross sign with his fingers to make me put the offending thing back in the bag right away. I said thank you and humbly walked out. Then I walked a few steps and had to lean against the side of the store wall to let myself tear up without fully sobbing it out in the middle of Oakland Chinatown - it's been a pretty tough few years. But, like the pillowcase, I'm slowly mending. And, just like me, the pillowcase needs more help than I can give alone. So decided to give one more place a try as I thought I could handle that kind of rejection one more time that day. But I decided to call first as easier to cry over the phone than in person, I thought. So I called....Ritz Tailor & Alterations. A female voice answered and I asked her if they work on pillowcases and told her very briefly it's an old pillowcase for my son - really trying to not spill out his and my life story so as not to scare her into an automatic knee-jerk 'no.' To my grateful surprise, she simply said, "bring it in so I can check it out." I walked over right away. And, even thought it was just a few short blocks, I think I may have teleported, not sure. lol. I went inside and again trying not to cry as I first told her my experience with the first place I went to. Then she asked to see the pillowcase. I carefully brought it out and apologetically showed her my hack patchwork job. Instead of the animal instinctive universal 'no' I was expecting and bracing myself for, she carefully took my son's pillowcase and examined it carefully and respectfully. She honestly said she didn't know what she can do and asked what I wanted. I breathed in, then out, and concentrated on verbalizing just a little part of my love for my son. I wanted to show my son that I love him. I wanted to show him that I'm sorry for all the hurt and tears I have caused and for the ones I could have prevented. I wanted to show him I'm here whenever he needs me and I'm sorry for the times when I wasn't. And so the very least I wanted was to try to patch up the holes and the tears on his pillowcase. I showed her the material I was using to patch up the pillowcase and we agreed that the best route was to use the material underneath to support the foundation and integrity of the pillowcase. She honestly told me that even then, it may just give an extra couple of years of use before the pillowcase will really need to retire. I told her that's alot more than I ever expected and thanked her very much. It's been a hard few years. but my son, his pillowcase, and I are mending with a little/ alot of help from those that take the time to simply see what's in our eyes and share what's in theirs. And what price did she charge for such an absolutely priceless, humanitarian, and compassionate service? $15 I apologize for forgetting to ask for her name. (This is a review for mens alterations only, not for full tailoring.) I went here after a coworker had a good experience getting several suit coats altered. I took 2 unfinished, off-the-rack suits to Ritz and one previously finished suit that needed further alterations. The good: - I was taken care of very professionally and promptly; and - workmanship on finishing the pants and taking in the sides of the coats was excellent; and - my coats fit very well afterwards, and my left and right sleeves were measured individually to ensure proper fit. The less-than-good: - As with most tailors I've tried, Ritz apparently did not believe me about how long I wanted my pants; and - one of my sleeves has some very slight scalloping, instead of having a perfectly crisp edge. Overall: - Price and promptness were good; and - most of the work was very good; but - there were a couple issues that were disappointing. read more

He's got a whole wall full of fabric selections here. So far I've had two blazers and two jackets tailored here and I'm satisfied with the results. I'm a shorty and nothing ever fits me right, especially the sleeves. So when my homie recommended this place I figured I'd give it a shot. The gentleman who does a lot of the measuring and tailoring can be pushy in that endearing, Asian uncle kind of way, but he knows what's he's doing. This is now my go-to tailor & alteration shop (I live in Los Angeles but visit the Bay often). My parents (who also use Ritz) suggested on me coming here to alter a formal dress (and a pair of jeans) for a wedding that I was leaving for in two days. The shop owner (a lovely woman, I didn't get her name) assured it would be done in time. She took my measurements super fast and sent me out the shop in less than 10 min. And not even 24 hours later, she called to let me know my dress and jeans were ready for pick up! The dress fit beautifully and my jeans nice and snug! I highly suggest coming to Ritz. It's a small shop in downtown Oakland (located in Chinatown or very close to it). Parking was no issue for me, I easily found street parking twice. And as far as pricing, I believe it was very fair - especially considering she had to take out the entire zipper in my dress and had both of my items ready for pick up in less than 24 hours. I've been to this business several times and have always been pleased. I'm very particular on how I like things done as I have to have EVERYTHING tailored (shorts, pants, blazers, etc.) Because of this I spend A LOT of money a month and in turn I'd like things done the way I want them done. The Good: Never had an issue with what was needed. Very prompt, always took care of my 6-7 pairs of pants at a time and blazers as well. I would get the blazers shorten in length as well as the sleeves. The Bad: I am not sure happened this time but the 7 pairs of pants were hemmed too long then too short (about twice.) After about 3 times of redos they told me that they cannot continue to hem them again and of course that 3rd time I was left with too short pants. He insisted that if I wanted to come back again that I had to mark my pants first. Good Sir, this is your profession not mine....so I will not mark my own pants, that's what I'm paying you for. The blazer was done too short...when they redid it they only length-ed one side and I was left with an uneven blazer. (they eventually got that right.) I'm torn as I hate looking for new places to do what I want but I am also not in the business to not being pleased. Over all I want give them a 5 but if they have to do it over again for not doing it right the first time you are out of luck....so a 2 it is. read more

I'm a chubby kid who for some reason still insists on buying sample-sale items from top quality independent designers. So obviously, these clothes aren't really made for my body type. I usually fit in between sizes. I took in 3 of these "top quality" dresses I've had sitting in a bag. On one of them, the hemline is crazy, asymmetrical, and ruched, with an accompanying slip underneath. I suggested that the tailor just cut the damn thing in a straight line, but he insisted on keeping the crazy hemline. One of the other dresses had about 4 inches of fabric sticking out in the middle of the back (had no idea if he could even fix this). The other dress was to be taken up a couple inches. In addition to these dresses I took in a skirt that had to literally have about 18 inches lopped off of it. And let's see. This all took 4 days AND only cost me a grand total of $35. It costs me $12 just to get pants hemmed at the cleaners (and they never hem them quite right, there's always threads unraveling all over the place, and/or it's crooked). I took the dresses home and they all fit perfectly. Granted, they are all wrinkled and smell that weird old-people's home smell that the Ritz itself smells like, but I'm up for a dry cleaning and/or an ironing if it's not going to break the bank to get complicated alterations made, and especially if it's gonna be done correctly! No, the tailor is not the friendliest guy in the world, but he's no swindler either (I think it has more to do with cultural differences then him being mean). I am hauling all my other clothes in need of alterations back to this place fo' sure! read more

I usually have a really tough time finding the right size pants when ever i go shopping but after a friend recommended tailoring I decided to give it a try. This place is amazing. I took a red silk bridesmaid dress here. I bought it on ebay and it ended up being too small. I took it to a couple places and they said they couldn't fix it - not enough material to make it bigger. But here they actually opened 4 seams in the front and expanded it a little in each section and it worked! It was still tight but hey I could zip it up :) The sewing work wasn't perfect (nothing anyone noticed but if you look closely you could). But it was $40 (!) and that's a hell of a deal. For that price the work was extraordinary. Saved me a lot of $$ since I thought I was going to have to buy a different dress. read more

Pleasant but poor work. There were 2 alterations to be made, she said it would be $15. I came to pick up pants, they forgot one of the alterations. Picked up the following day, and it was now $20. Finally, the hem is too short and poorly done as well. Sorry, 3 strikes and you're out! Will go elsewhere to have them fixed. read more

I think the owner's name is Henrik. I took 3 poorly made custom suits by Gary Tailor (Austin Texas) to Ritz Tailor since they had to be re-cut and refitted to look at least passable for me to wear. Ritz tailors did an outstanding job at a reasonable price of salvaging my $4,000 investment! But then something amazing happened: The owner took my new suit coat that he had just re-cut over to another suit coat he had just made for someone else. He began comparing each detailed part of the suit coat: the hand sewn button holes on the sleeves that actually have holes the sleeve buttons can go in and out of! Then he showed me the finished seams behind and underneath the collar and lapel that were all sewn INVISIBLY by hand, with not a single stitch in view. And then there was the quality of the top of the center pleat, and the way the pockets are handsewn and the pocket slits disappear into the design of the pinstripes, etc., etc., etc. And all this time I thought that I WAS A CUSTOM SUIT EXPERT!! Well, Ritz Tailor essentially took me to the shed on how much I did not know about what to look for in a fine suit....and he did so in a very factual and earnest way that makes you believe him and how proud of his craft he is. For the rest of my life, I will go to no other custom tailor. I will have Ritz make my winter coats, spring jackets, suits, shirts, vests, and anything else I need to wear!!! read more
