I was a bit iffy going into this due to most places that are local over-pricing for something that has the same quality you can get anywhere else for cheaper, however rival bros had some amazing frozen coffee, my partner who doesn't even like coffee said it was good, the service was amazing the person at the counter was very friendly and he was quick to answer my question, the surrounding area is a neighborhood so it felt like I was part of the community walking in, they didn't treat me as somebody who had never been in the spot before but rather they treated me as a regular, across the street is a great fountain that I sat and drank my coffee at read more

Walked in and wasn't greeted which is whatever but I also got a stare instead of a smile like another reviewer mentioned lol. The barista was having an active conversation with a customer so once she made my order she plopped it down on the counter and went right back to the conversation, no eye contact. A male worker came in after I had already sat down though, and he seemed friendly enough‍. There were so many flies coming in and out of the bathroom, so not sure if they just weren't maintaining it or what but I did not want to step foot in there. The iced mocha was standard but pretty bitter even with sweetener, so maybe order extra sweetener if the barista can be bothered to add it. They also up charge for oat milk here, but the cashier didn't mention that, just added the charge. That's that Gen Z customer service I guess. Two stars because there was wifi and seating. read more

Opens on Sunday unlike some places. Tucked in the back is a sit down area but it as full. Otherwise I would've ordered more. Came here for the bathroom but it was important to patronize a local business Too. Nice, conscious staff! Rivals Bros Coffee is a cute little coffee shop in South Philly that sits off of Passyunk Ave. I came here because I was told by a friend of mine that they had the best coffee in Philly, and after my experience, I can see that it was no lie. Rival Bros has some of the best coffee I've drunk in a while. They have cute decor with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating as well as fast and friendly service. After looking over the menu I decided to order an iced mocha and a vanilla brioche donut. Whew, Chile! After drinking my iced Mocha, I can see why Rival Bros logos are a boxing ring and two men appearing as if they're about to fight. Their coffee is so strong it feels like someone punched you in the face every time you take a sip ... which is perfect for a 9th-grade teacher who has been run ragged because they've had to teach through a pandemic since March of 2020! Even after asking for extra chocolate in my Mocha, it was still some of the strongest coffee I've ever had, and I loved every bit of it. I'd like to add that my Mocha went perfectly with my vanilla brioche donut. All in all, I would like to say that Rival Bros Coffee will get you RIGHT if you have a long day ahead of you, and like my friend said, it is the best coffee in the Southside of Philly! read more

Friendly service and local shop with great seating. Loved the cold brew and access to charge for my laptop and phone. Worked before my brunch at Barcelona around the corner. Used to come here daily for coffee, but the staff is so unbearably miserable, rude and unwelcoming that I decided to take my business elsewhere. No "hi can I take your order".. the barista will just stare at you until you say something. Never a thank you for tipping. They often talk about or complain about other customers (in front of customers). The young man behind the counter makes it pretty clear he has no desire to be there. At first I thought maybe I was the only one experiencing this but amongst a bunch of folks in the neighborhood it seems to be a general conclusion that the coffee is good, but the staff are so unpleasant it ruins the experience. read more

Great little coffee shop (though it's bigger than you'd think from outside). It was a hot, humid day, so we opted for a granita-type coffee drink and an affogato. Both were excellent. We had a seat and enjoyed our coffee there, but I wouldn't guess this is a place where you'd spend hours sitting coffee. Looks like most folks get their coffee and move on to the next place. i am gonna just say that i don't how i became super sensitive to caffeine since i used to drink ungodly amounts of it when i was younger but at some point i just started reacting somewhat adverse to it. i think it may have had something to do with do it and smoking at the same time. but whatever since quitting smoking i have been getting back into caffeine and it's been going better than it has in some time although i still can't handle too much. and i have been searching for the best i can find locally which brought me here after checking out a few other places around town. This store close to my favorite part of south Philly is really nice despite the construction on the corner. The space is very clean, well furnished with a nice back room which was packed on a wednesday afternoon and had a steady stream of patrons coming in and out which is always a good sign. I ordered a hot latte and a bag of their champion roast beans to go. I sat down at a table read some emails and enjoyed the cup, it was a cold day and the perfectly brewed coup which was not too hot like many other places make went down very nicely. it was very well balanced and although i did leave a bit shake it was like the perfect amount of caffeine for me not too much not too little it was actually about as much as i could comfortably take without being to speedy. The beans i brought home have been great also and deliver similar results no tart or sour flavors and just all in all a great experience and probably what will become my regular local provider. read more

Rival Bros is home to some excellent coffee in Philly! My go-to is usually a cortado, and they make a damn near perfect one. They also have a great selection of pastries and other baked goods from local bakeries like Crust and Mighty Bread Co. I usually take my coffee and food to-go, but they have a good seating area inside and an even better one outside that allows for great people-watching right across from the Singing Fountain on nice days. read more

South Philly is such an anomaly. I would have never expected a Rival Bros to pop up on Passyunk, but I'm kind of glad it did. The spot itself is nice and cozy with about enough seating for 14-20 people max. The coffee menu is small but concentrated as expected from this kind of cafe, and they offer a wide variety of tea. If you're a fan of sencha green tea, they brew this VERY well. I didn't have any of the pastries but I came towards the end of the day so didn't feel like it'd be worth it. This is definitely more of a millennial hangout cafe than a place to work with the small tables and pretty uncomfy furniture. That being said, it's nice to have an older crowd without a bunch of teenagers being obnoxious like some places can feature. It's very zen! read more

What's there not to like about Rival? The answer is nothing. Their signature beans are all to die for, the teas are so good (I'm still dreaming about the tumeric ginger I had over the weekend) and the toast, oh that dripping icky sticky warm peanut butter toast with figs and vanilla salt. Oh. Em. Gee. That toast is the stuff I dream about! They offer hand pours, single origins and cold brews (including nitro). I'm a self proclaimed coffee snob, and Rival is my spot! (El Salvador is my all time favorite for grabbing bags of beans to bring home). I will say this location (out of the three I've been to) is actually my least favorite decor wise, but I'm happy to have it so close by now I don't even care! They use Chemex for their pour overs and you can even buy them here! I did and am so obsessed with mine. If you're inside how to use it, just ask! The staff is so knowledgeable and friendly and willing to share all of their caffeinated secrets! Every time I come in they have new stuff like Rival swag, even their own homemade jerky I picked up for hubs. They definitely keep it interesting here! There's room in back for meeting up for some coffee talk or getting some work done but for me it's been grab and go at this location. read more

I ordered the daily bread this morning and it was pretty disappointing. It was covered with a crazy amount of butter and did not seem toasted at all. (It was not warm, not crunchy and obviously none of the butter was melted). I scraped off a ton of butter (and the top layer of salt which I would have liked to keep) still leaving it too buttery and unenjoyable as it was just a cold piece of bread. Ambiance great. Sometimes I have to wonder whether the people who open coffee shops have ever used a coffee shop or think about the experience of people who use coffee shops. The people who opened Rival Bros Coffee certainly had no realistic concept of what people would enjoy in a coffee shop. Most of the time I am at a coffee shop I come to work. And I'm not alone because I mostly see people sitting in front of computers at all of these places. Yet many coffee shops make working uncomfortable by playing loud music, and that's what they do at Rival Bros. The music is soft, but way too loud. You hear the music instead of your thoughts; people have to talk louder to be heard over it, and you cannot talk over the phone comfortably. I guess if the coffee shop does not want people to hang out and work, a good thing to do is put on loud music, and that's what Rival Bros does. The food at Rival Bros makes no sense. I looked at the food selection twice and cannot understand it. They had a small selection of toast and croissants or something. Don't expect to come here and have something filling and tasty with your coffee. Even if a coffee shop wants to have something different, you'd think they would still have something the typical user identifies as food, such as a bagel or a muffin. Most of the seating consists of benches with straight and hard metal backs. There is a cushion on the bottom of the bench, but no cushion or anything on the back, just a hard straight metal back without any form of lumbar support of anything to make sitting on one of the benches comfortable. In front of the benches are small round metal tables that are bolted to the floor. If you think you'd be more comfortable by moving the table an inch or two back or forth, you're out of luck. The coffee was fine. Homegrown Coffee on the 1400 block of Jackson Street is the place to go. read more
