We came early on a Saturday morning when it was still quiet and it was the best. Service was friendly and helpful (also, patient). We ordered a toast, a breakfast sandwich, a latte and a drip coffee because it came with the bag of beans we also got. The drip wasn't bad, though I don't usually opt for drip when I go out for coffee. The latte was dusted with cinnamon, unexpectedly, but it was nice. We were about half way through our coffees and our food came out. I got the salmon toast, which was perfect. Perfect amount of capers and onions on top and the bread wasn't rock hard or sandwich soft. The egg sandwich was egg and cheese on toasted bread but somehow it was still better than I make at home. Came here on a Saturday morning. I was able to find street parking relatively easy and the location looked safe. The only reason I mention security is because last time in Kensington I did not have a safe experience. The place had a few patrons and it was so quiet. Service was polite and quick. If you sit near the window I would recommend waving at the cat who has his chill spot on the window across the street. I also ordered just a breakfast sandwich on sourdough and "sugar Town" made out of cream cheese, smoked wild salmon, capers. Both were good! I would definitely come back. read more

I came to this cafe with a friend on a Sunday morning for breakfast. I really liked their variety of drinks and food. The indoor decor was great there were lots of seats and people were studying nearby at the tables. Probably my favorite part is the interior it has a very vintage feel while still modern which is expected in Fishtown. As for food I ended up getting the lavender lemonade which was extremely sweet but still refreshing. I opted for The Oxford breakfast sandwich - switched out prosciutto for bacon arugula, rustic cheese blend on a Philly muffin. My food was pretty good. The bread tasted fresh and bacon was good. The arugula was on the side. Thought for sure they'd put it on the sandwich but I just put a few leaves there myself. I plucked off a star for service. For some reason our food took a bit longer than I'd expect for a breakfast sandwich. Also my friend's food took even longer and she only got some toast with spread on it. Service felt a bit disjointed while there but it certainly didn't ruin the visit. I'd come back here. read more

Had an extremely rude interaction with the barista today and won't be back. I ordered a small Americano with milk and tip. When I get it, it is full to the brim (overspilling) and has no milk. Since it's not safe to walk with boiling hot liquid spilling over, and I want to stir it, I ask her politely if she minds giving me a larger cup. She gives it with attitude. I pour it in the larger cup, clean up the spill and realize I need a larger lid too, which she blatantly rolls her eyes at me when I ask. I then tell her I only asked for a larger cup because she didn't give me milk like I asked so this way I have space to pour milk in (btw, I didn't even bother asking her to correct the mistake and add milk, thinking I'd rather add it at home since any request is clearly excruciating for her.) She again gives me a dirty look and says "okay" and rolls her eyes again. Having worked in food service I honestly have low expectations but this was ridiculous. There was one other customer, I asked politely and only had to ask because of her mistake. Please do better - there are plenty of local coffee shops, I truly appreciate each one but it gets difficult to patronize one when I'm treated horribly for no reason. read more

Pretty spacious coffee shop attached to an apartment complex. Both indoor and outdoor seating available. Good spot to study or read since they have free wifi, but note hours, they close very early. Coffee is good, but not amazing. The small size is 8oz which should be the size of a macchiato or shot of espresso, not the size of a latte. Personally, there are other coffee shops in the area that I like better, but this is not a bad option! read more

I walk past here almost everyday and I think I tried to come in 5 days in a row and literally every single time the store was randomly closed due to a water issue or just it being closed during posted business hours. (Maybe no employees?? I have no idea) When I finally came in the coffee was okay, honestly it wasn't anything to write home about.. considering there's so many coffee places in the area I don't think this would be at the top of my list. But it wasn't BAD either. I don't know if all the employees were new at the time but I ordered a latte and they brought me a cold brew, whatever not a big deal.. But it just wasn't that good either. Like I said I think all the employees were new at the time, but they all also seemed panicked. I felt kinda bad. I really enjoyed their red pepper sandwich's as well but every single time it was made differently. The first time it was perfect. So I came back specifically for the sandwich but the second time it was literally just a huge slice of tomato and barely any red pepper. I gave this place at least 5 tries before calling it quits. I hate to give a small business a bad review but like I said, there's other places in the area with better coffee. read more

I walked in this morning and greeted the barista saying "good morning "he looked me dead in the eye and said nothing at all. I ordered my coffee and a pastry, still said nothing to me but my total in a deadpan tone. Cute spot, but pretentious. I went to pick up an order and it took a long time for anyone to even acknowledge my presence. When the young man noticed me and spoke, he asked what I needed without a hello. The two baristas worked on 3 drinks in the time that I was there and must've had a strict policy of not talking to or greeting anyone unless they could serve them. I don't know; it seemed weird and inhospitable. I won't go back, but in this neighborhood, they'll keep chugging along. College kids love that sh*t. read more

I'm currently completing an analysis of Almond Milk Lattes in Philadelphia (I'm equally passionate about tacos!- see my previous reviews). Gryphon has THE BEST almond milk latte anywhere I've ever been! Their lattes are very coffee forward, slightly gritty, and perfectly delicious. In addition... the croissants... Oh My God! I was meeting a friend at Gryphon one evening and (as they were about to close), we were offered 6 croissants each (for free!!). I ate them all before the sun came up the next morning. I can't say that'll happen to you (the free thing) but I can def recommend that you buy one. I am a current Teach for America Corps Member (TFA shares a building w/ Gryphon) and I'm forced to come here every couple months for Saturday seminars... waking up early to sit in overly air-conditioned rooms is dreadful (no shade to TFA) but getting my 2 Gryphon lattes (breakfast and lunch) makes it all worth it. Finally, the vibe is perfectly minimalist, perfectly hipster/ steampunk (tho no one there is a snobby asshole). Awesome spot, worth a trip to fishtown for sure. read more

Strolled by this lil cafe on my way to Salon Indy and I'm so glad I popped in! I was immediately greeted by two baristas. The high ceilings and modern but cozy industrial vibes of the cafe were enticing. I came in to order one coffee... nothing special. Literally just a plain old coffee. There was no coffee. The place was entirely empty outside of one customer that the associate was talking with, and yet it took about 5 minutes for him to even ask me if I wanted anything. Mind you, this was the first time I've been to this cafe. It is a cafe, right? Just curious because I feel like most cafes have coffee readily available. Finally, after the barista slowly finished up a conversation, he looked at me like I was the rude one. Then he took my order. BREWED the coffee because none was available. After I got my coffee, I wanted to put some cream or milk in it. There was none. I got over it and drank it black. I was at a meeting nearby and needed an afternoon pick-me-up. I spotted the sign on the corner pointing to Gryphon Cafe so I ran across the street to check it out. The space is open and industrial-looking - a fun place for a meeting or to get some work done. I had the cold brew and have to say I wasn't crazy about it. It could just be that it was my third coffee of the day so my body was trying to tell me something. It wouldn't stop me from going again to try another beverage. The baked goods looked amazing and the barista said they stock them from Machine Shop. The everything seasoning-topped bagels and breads looked delish. There was also a big bowl of fresh fruit by the counter so I picked up a couple pieces for home. Solid coffee shop and I'd love to get back for another visit sometime. read more

I have to say I was not expecting this to be such an amazing spot from the outside. I think they need to add some plants/chairs/signage to make it apparent that they are here. The door is around a corner making it slightly inconspicuous to passerby's. I also don't think their hours are that conducive to foot traffic. All of that said, I had the opportunity to work remotely so I chose to do that from Gryphon Cafe. It's the perfect place to work on school work or work! They have delicious food and lattes. I was happy to see that they are also dog friendly! I definitely will be back. read more

Great "hidden" coffeeshop! I was blown away by the PB&J (iced) latte and was so sad with it being my last day in Philly for a while. I also got the Oxford breakfast sandwich which was good. It wasn't greasy as many breakfast sandwiches can be. My only complaint was I wish it was bigger. I'll definitely be back as it is the perfect spot for a morning of work or reading. I went here to get some work done and to my disappointment the place is NOT wheelchair accessible despite being fairly new. It's frustrating trying new places only find access to be an issue. I had my wedding here and it was their first time hosting an event, well, they knocked it out of the park! Perfection all around. The owners, Len and Rich, were an absolute joy to work with. The food and coffee were incredible (I've always loved their coffee). The space is spectacular.
