Sansom Street Location Review! I love coffee. If I could hook it up through an IV I would. However, I don't get out much in the way of trying new places. A few colleagues convinced me to come on a coffee run here and it is my new spot. The staff is so kind and patient. I wasn't sure what to get. I debated between the coffee slushie and an iced coffee. They were kind enough to let me try the slushie. It was really good, but definitely an afternoon delight for me. I got an iced vanilla oat coffee instead - better than expected! I find that some coffee shop's iced is too watery, but this was perfect. Finally, I wish I could work from the shop because the space is open, large and beautiful. read more

Definitely more like a quick stop kind of place, since the seating is limited here due to their small foot print. But overall, with the exception of a few conversations, this is a pretty chill, focused environment for working, reading, or catching up with a friend. Staff are friendly, but at the time I visited were pretty busy handling a lot of incoming orders. My coffee, as expected, was fantastic, and my friend got a flash cold brew that was also really good. They sometimes have some seasonal specials here that are usually worth trying out! Wi-fi and outlets are decent. Check them out! read more

Came over for a pick me up matcha later on a Thursday at around 2 pm. The interior is pretty small but had a decent amount of seating and was pretty cozy. I ordered as soon as I entered and got my drink very quickly as well. Matcha Latte - I opted for a hot matcha and I liked that they asked if I wanted sweetener added. The sweetener definitely made a difference, bringing out the richness of the matcha and the matcha itself came through well, slightly grassy and smooth. I thoroughly enjoyed the drink and from the service to the vibes of the cafe, it is a great place to check out if in the area. read more

Mmkay. Coffee: fantastic: I got a flat white with almond mylk and it was good n' strong. Pastry: fair: spinach-feta deal would have been elevated had it been warmed. I saw a toaster but woman who helped me said 'we don't warm pastries, but they are delivered fresh daily'. Normally, I'd pass on a cold pastry but I'd done my research and knew they came from Machine Shop thanks to yelper, Hugh H. (*Salutes*). It was good despite the temp. Th philly coffee scene reminds me of the Austin coffee scene in some ways- very well roasted beans with unique flavors that pair well into a well executed drink. My husband and I came in for an afternoon pick me up. I ordered their strawberry rose latte (all their syrups are made in house). The bartender seemed very experienced and recommended an oat milk pairing with the drink. At first, I honestly rolled my eyes inside because I normally hate when oat milk overpowers a roasted bean flavor to create a more "creamy latte", but I gave it a try anyways. Let's just say, I'm really happy I listened. All the flavors of the drink enhanced one another- the bean, strawberry, rose, and even the oat. It was absolutely delicious and had great mouth feel. I loved it. The drink was also very pretty. The interior was a bit small, but there are enough tables for people the camp out and do work. Overall, highly recommend!! read more

An easily accessible cafe on E Passyunk right on the corner! I think the exterior looks way prettier than the real interior. The seating area is lackluster, a few wooden tables scattered around the back. There were a few people with their laptops when I went (not sure if there was an outlet but I think there was one by the couch). For decor, there's a Christmas tree by the couch at least! The service was alright, nothing outstanding. I got a maple tahini latte, and to my dismay, it tasted like a regular coffee. It's supposed to have pure maple syrup, vanilla, tahini, maldon salt, and spiced sugar garnish. Maybe if you like subtler flavors, this might be up your alley. I couldn't taste any of the winter or holiday flavors. This is probably why they didn't list their holiday drinks out. At least they made it with some latte art! I also got a cinnamon roll and ham and cheese croissant. The cinnamon roll was nothing out of the ordinary, but I wish it were soft and warm. The ham and cheese croissant was interesting because the ham is cooked into the croissant dough with cheese on top. read more

Found this Nice little coffee spot just a few steps away from the Airbnb I was staying in. Owned by 2 Friends and Philly natives, they roast their own beans and craft some great coffee. Cappuccino was very good but the roasted drip was even better. A choice of two blends, I chose the revolver blend- smooth cocoa with warm spices. It was a nice way to start the day. Staff is super nice and friendly. Just an overall great neighborhood spot! read more

I am a coffee enthusiast so I love visiting coffee shops around the area. This coffee shop was lovely. I was in the area for an errand and came to this location. I was going to get a coffee but decided on an iced lychee jasmine tea with lime. I actually really really liked this tea! It was a unique drink and was so refreshing. I would honestly go back just for that. If my tea was good, the coffee must be even better. As far as the inside of the shop goes, healthy amount of seating for yourself or small groups to chill! Great lil coffee shop! Fair amount of seating inside (head to the back) and outside. I've been here twice and it wasn't too busy either time, but I do usually come in the late afternoon. Really appreciate that this cafe is open later than most. Got a chai tea, reasonably strong and spiced which I liked (I've had stronger, but this is still decent!). Just a little sweeter than I'd like, but overall pretty good. Wifi connection was really weak, if that matters to you. read more

Beautiful aroma wafting throughout this neighborhood can only mean one thing...Rival Bros are at it again. You know this is going to be something special when you can smell this beautiful aroma dancing in the air from a block away. Just let it carry you inside where you will feel a sudden surge of excitement come upon you. You might also have  an impatient pulse wondering when is it your turn to order, when is it your turn to indulge into that perfect cup. Those are the questions that will be running through your head , or maybe you are in need of some much needed caffeine? Maybe less caffeine in how you would approach it, if you are that anxious. There are plenty of coffee shops in Philly, but this has to be the most unique one out of the bunch. Don't get me wrong there are some great shops out there also serving up works of art like Rival Bros. The coffee roasting gods have granted us with a gift, so don't question it, or how is it possible that this is that damn good. I live in West Philly, but whenever I can I will walk to Rival Bros for my decaf latte with almond milk. Whether iced or hot Rival knows how to make this drink right. I always complain how I cannot find a good cup of latte across the river in the West Philly side. Don't misunderstand me, there are enough cafes, but somehow a lot of the coffee based drinks are either too strong or too weak. Rival Bros seem to get the flavour just right. The service has been good and steady during this pandemic, and the place is always clean. It gets A+ on my cafe list! read more

This one is a cozy spot in a cozy part of Philly. Sitting outside, you can people watch the quiet strolls people are taking or even peep into the barber shop across the street. I love the 'daily bread' at Rival Bros - this time it was potato bread that was soft and fluffy but delicious all the same with salt, butter, and jam. Sometimes it's a heftier, crusty bread too. First, without any qualification, I LOVE the coffee here. My husband and I are here nearly every Saturday morning for his cappuccino, my morning drip and our bag of beans for the week. This morning, we indulged in a ham and cheese croissant and peanut butter toast w/ fresh figs.... AMAZING!! .... and with our morning indulgence, came a side of unpleasantness, possibly motivated by unconscious bias. Long story short... the $15 bag of beans comes with a free drink, and this morning, we purchased the beans along with my husband's cappuccino, our croissant and toast and my free drip coffee. Apparently, the free drink is a medium, not the large that I ordered (a difference of 4oz). So, after some discussion, the woman at the counter upcharged $1 for the larger drink... except a large is only fifty cents more than a medium. Then she handed me the bag of beans, croissant and drip coffee to juggle in my arms with the peanut butter toast and cappuccino. The woman before me ordered a lone pastry and a drink and was offered a bag with the friendliest of smiles. The woman behind the counter and the customer in front of me were white. I, on the other hand, am not. Coincidence? Quite possibly. Or perhaps unconscious bias. At no point did the situation become hostile, but it was certainly unpleasant. At the end, a woman (whom I assume is the manager) stressed that the free drink is a "bag drink" (i.e., tea) or medium coffee but she would refund the $1 upcharge for the large drip. The point is not the dollar. I can afford the dollar. The point is the unnecessary unpleasantness and clear inconsistency in treatment of customers. I grew up in the restaurant and service industry... there's a saying, "give them the pickle." Google it. It's a good story and lesson for life... also a case study for most b-school students focused on the hospitality industry. read more

Actually more of a 4.5 rating. A solid cafe in a quaint neighborhood. I loved the location of the cafe, the interior design, and vibes. Very much rustic cafe vibes, good area to do work in, although there can be a lot of traffic (many cute families with cute babies and cute doggos - very good for people and dog watching), we were there early morning too (7:30-9am). We got the oat milk latte, oat milk mocha, and oat milk derringer (not pictured). I thought the former two were really smooth and gives the caffeine kick I needed. It was solid but nothing special. After a string of disappointing coffee shop experiences, Rival Bros is a welcome exception. They do espresso drinks correctly. A cappuccino here is how it should be, not the Starbucks-sized latte pretending to be a cappuccino. Quality beans that are well roasted and properly extracted. Good milk texture. And I appreciate that they ask if you'd like your drink to stay or to go, instead of assuming you want it in a throwaway cup. Despite its distance from where I usually hang, it's worth the longer walk. read more

Three words: ICED ALMOND LATTE I tried rival bros coffee on a warm Friday morning in Philly and boy was I impressed. I was stuck between their cold brews and lattes but I decided on the latte. I love how smooth their espresso is and the almond milk was very creamy. As someone who normally gets oat milk because of the consistency, I was happy that their almond milk didn't lack. I'd definitely give this latte a 10/10! You order inside but have to sit outside. Which is perfect because they have quite a few seats and tables. I'd definitely come back to try their cold brew as well as their pastries because they looked so good! read more

Cute little coffee shop in a cute neighborhood! I was visiting from Boston, and this is my sister's favorite coffee spot. I'm convinced that a small menu = high quality. Really loved my iced almond milk latte, and enjoyed the sips I took from the my siblings' drinks. It was a 90+ degree day after walking around all morning, so I will also fondly remember this place for saving my life when I was exhausted in the afternoon when we stopped by. read more

Not bad, but admittedly a bit disappointing after having to wait in line and all the review hype. They seemed unable to determine if they made me a latte or a cappuccino and I couldn't quite tell if they just were trying to say whatever would make me feel happy or what. More importantly, the coffee doesn't seem to have much flavor profile which I would expect from a fancy pants coffee shop, and there's slight sourness, probably from the dairy, which I admittedly don't usually opt for. Became oddly bitter as it cooled. Cute space, lovely customers, and great staff though. read more
