Nothing bad to say about this coffee shop. Place is neat, clean, mostly minimalistic décor, and generally calming vibe. I had an oat milk latte first then a macchiato. Coming from a barista myself, I can say both were made very well. Good extraction; the crema tasted delicious on the macchiato. The barista who served me seems to know his craft very well. I like the music, but that's up to personal taste- wasn't too loud for me. If I could improve upon anything I would just say slightly better lighting and bigger tables. Rival Bros. is one of those coffee concepts that I've been infatuated with since it was only available in a food truck. And when the first coffeehouse was set to open I was filled with so much anticipation that I even showed up for it before it even officially opened (https://www.yelp.com/biz/rival-bros-coffee-philadelphia-3)! While I did a better job of following its official opening this time around, I was filled with an equal amount of enthusiasm when I learned that they were opening a 3rd coffeehouse in the building that used to house the main entry portion of Chiarella's in Passyunk (There's a good trend with what moved into that place! - https://www.yelp.com/biz/manatawny-still-works-philadelphia). And when it finally opened I made my trek to first try it during opening weekend, only to find out that it was better than any other form of Rival Bros that I had previously encountered. Who do you do to make a coffeehouse brand with a five star reputation even better? First you extend your opening hours to an impressive 10 PM for those Friday and Saturday nights. Then you team up with the distillery that you share a past location with to create an amazing rum and cold brewed coffee based cocktail known as the Interior Connection (but while Rival Bros provides the coffee, you'll need to go to Manatawny to try that one!). Lastly they pay homage to one of Philly's famous deals by creating a caffeinated version of the Citywide Special, or a small cup of coffee and a double shot of espresso for a damn good $3. Add in the same great pastries, drinks, and customer service that they're known for in Their other locations, and you give Rival Bros another contender for best Coffeehouse in the Philly proper! read more

This is one of the rare spots for study in South Philly. I can't believe I didn't know about this place until now. - Layout: simple and clean. Inside, there are around 10 small tables, enough for two people for an intimate atmosphere at the back. These are good for studying or conversations. Plenty of outlets. The tables are screwed onto the floor so impossible to move them around, but this can be both a pro and a con, since they are stable and don't wobble around, making it great for studying/writing, but hard to accommodate big groups. The background music is not too loud and there is a quiet ambience around the neighborhood. Since the weather is getting nicer, there are a few tables placed outside. There is also a bathroom in the back. - Coffee: I ordered an iced latte and I was impressed by how strong it is. They claimed that their espresso drinks are double shots, and that is the case for my drink. The coffee is smooth, fragrant and potentially addicting. I have not tried the food but they looked delicious. Prices are standard for cafes in Philly. - Wifi: not laggy like Starbucks; perfect for studying - There is not much of a crowd when I went on a weekday, just a few people on the laptops in the back. There may be a different crowd on the weekends (or not, since this is South Philly). Overall, this is a gem, especially in South Philly where cafes like this are hard to find. Visited twice. Once busy, once less. Staff is taking this wayyy too seriously. It's a very stern place. Like a library but less fun. Not that they need to entertain you but lighten up just a little. I ordered a macchiato. Barrista decided he should make his lattes first so two people behind me got their drinks before mine. Mine was a little colder than luke warm and I saw why. Barrista didn't wait for milk to reach temp and then dumped more than 2 shots full of it in the cup. So I got a cold cortado not a macchiato. I'll live of course. But this seems like stuff that should be relatively easy to fix. read more

I've visited this place twice before. The first time I came in the gentlemen behind the counter gave me a cup of coffee on the house. This particular coffee shop is a new addition to the area. The inside has wooden floors and offers seating in the back of the shop. I had a double shot of expresso with ice cream and it was great! I really enjoyed it and will order it again next time I'm there. The employees there are very nice and informative. They seem to know what they are doing and take pride in their profession. We sat inside for a little while to enjoy our beverages. The coffee shop is clean, spacious and prices are fair. They offer some usual items sold at coffee shops along with some sandwiches. This is the best coffee shop I've found South of Washington Ave, and east of Broad Street. My go to coffee drink, latte, trends slightly bitter, but is well balanced. I'm able to drink it with no sugar added. They also have some good food options. The "Daily Bread" from High Street is a good option. They also carry Bedfordshire Clangers from Stargazy, the English pie shop that's located couple blocks down Passyunk. read more

My favorite coffee shop in South Philly. The employees are nice and have your order ready fast. It's quiet and cozy in the back seating area perfect for studying, reading, or just enjoying your cup of coffee. Their cold brew is unique and my favorite drink to purchase. I've also tried their toast and jam. It's unlike anything I've tried because the toast has large bits of salt yet the jam is so fruity and sweet. It's a great combination. I've also tried their chocolate croissant and its amazing! Their carrot cake is also good. A bonus is that they accept credit cards which is great when you don't have cash yet in need of good coffee. read more

I have loved Rival Bros for years and been to multiple of their locations. When I moved to Passyunk, I was really excited to have this location right around the corner. The staff here is great and there is always space, good WiFi, and good vibes. I typically drink the drip, but I have had a cappuccino and it was good as well. They also have rotating pastries, breads, and other foods if you're looking for a bite. When the weather is nice, the tables and chairs are always outside and you can certainly catch a cute little dog, too! read more

Absolutely top notch third wave espresso. Great spot with excellent in/out seating options right at the central triangle of this awesome neighborhood. Third wave espresso is typically excellent, but Rival seems to take it a step further. One of the best! Espresso is served with San Peligrino mineral water on the side. Their coffee is not for the faint of heart. And by that I mean super duper strong. Which is good if that's what you want. Baked goods are pretty cool. Banana chocolate muffin is my favorite. The ham and cheese croissant is dope. Wish they had more of a selection for food though. read more

This is my new go-to for coffee around Passyunk. Their iced coffee (cold brew) is amazing. Such an interesting, rich flavor. The space itself is beautiful, with lots of seating available in the back. The coffee was good. The chive and cheddar scone was fine. I spent a good amount of time working in here and I can't complain about the WiFi, the baristas, the music, the noise level or the furniture as they were all great. The only thing that detracted from my time there was the abundance of flies in the shop. They were all over: in the sitting area/dining room and even inside the pastry case. I found it really distracting, annoying and even a little disgusting to constantly have to swat them away from my coffee and scone. It was a nice day and they had the doors open for fresh air (like wide open) which I think is great..if you have a screen door to keep out the flies. I mean, the baristas literally moved their hands around the flies as they took my scone out of the case. They had to notice the infestation. I'll definitely be back but I'm hoping the flies won't. read more

So I've tried to like this place, I chose this over another coffee shop because they have a counter at the door and I had my pup with me and hate tying him up by himself. But their coffee just isn't good ! I got a cold brew with milk and sugar - very basic because their menu is slim and I just wanted something easy but it just doesn't taste like it was brewed with filtered water. But to be fair not all coffee can be good, the main reason I'm giving it two stars (if not for this issue it'd be a 4 for convenience) is the staff. Every time I've come there the staff has been so rude. Today for example I got the coffee and a quiche, easy enough. But from standing at a distance with the staff and I in masks from behind plexiglass it's hard to hear. So he said an order but a girl had gone two people ahead of me so I wasn't sure whose it was. So I slowly got up, said is this mine? He said well you got a cold brew and a quiche did you not, therefore that makes it yours. Um okay I didn't hear you. And previously before covid I've had staff be very curt, they have no personality or pep or something. I get working during the pandemic sucks I have to do it too I am a frontliner but I still have to force myself to be nice. This is a hard time for everyone so maybe just make an effort it isn't that hard. read more
