My boyfriend treated me to the tasting menu at river stone chophouse for my birthday. I really enjoyed the ambiance and the experience. Since we specifically came for the tasting menu, it was a bit disappointing that our server did not know much about the wine or pairings. Also while I realized it was a paired tasting menu, the restaurant was inflexible when it came to tweaking a single wine option. I'd recommend this place but would hope that my next experience would include a bit more attention to the details. read more

My food was cold and was like a tapas plate. I thought the scallops would have been bigger for the price. We had the Valentines dinner which was 95.00 a person. My risotto was cold and thick. I'm more upset about the size of the scallops. I probably won't be back. I was so excited to go there but it was all a flop. I got off early to come there. I would've enjoyed Yardhouse or twisted crab so much better. Our bill was 315.00. It was absolutely not worth it at all!!!!! read more

First, let me say this. If you plan on eating here for dinner it's best to make a reservation. If you don't, you may not be able to get a table at all for the night. With that being said I made a reservation for 7:00pm and we were seated immediately after checking in with the hostess. The ambience of the restaurant is great and the service is superb. The staff does a great job with social distancing which my husband and I appreciated during a time like this. Our server was Shane who made our dinner run smoothly between each course and wasn't overbearing. We had calamari for an appetizer. To be honest, it wasn't that great. I think it may have been overcooked. It was also a little salty. Aside from that, everything was tasty from the 8oz Filet to the Porterhouse. If you like seasoning on your food, don't go to this restaurant. Everything was bland from the appetizers to the entrees. The service was excellent and the ambiance was beautiful but if I'm paying $$$ I expect the food to taste good. Also, I was disappointed with the way my leftovers were packaged. To start- I am not a troll who lives to say negative things about a business. I have been in the restaurant business, been a chef, and a host on a local talk radio station's restaurant show. Last night was my first visit to River Stone. I was hoping for good things. Ambiance was modern steakhouse and inviting. Our server was a fellow who I believe has been mentioned before in reviews- nice guy-loud talker, and ran through the menu and specials as if he were being paid by the word....a little off putting. But he was doing his job I supposed. Appetizer- My guest and I agreed on the Southern Belle Roasted Oysters in garlic butter ( $29.00) . Presentation was quite good, a large copper bowl full of rock salt upon which a dozen oysters sat. The garlic butter was delicious- when it remain in the shell, which is did not for half of the shellfish. Every oyster had grit mixed in with the oyster which was quite off putting. 2 shells were missing oysters entirely and these were the smallest oysters I have ever been served in an up-scale restaurant- some of which were no bigger than a my thumbnail. My guest had a house salad ( $10) which looked fine and which she said was very good. Main- My guest ordered the filet- medium ($45) . No sides. She said it was very tasty and tender. I believe her. I am eating carnivore, so I was looking for the largest piece of beef that was on the menu. I ordered the Bone-In Dry Aged Ribeye ($68) which is featured apart from the other steaks in it's own box. I tried to order some extra protein and fat by adding Lobster A LA Oscar, but my server was very insistent that I would not like it and so I did not. What I was served was a charred ( good!) unrecognizable piece of meat. There was a shard of a bone in it, but honestly, if you picture a bone in rib eye steak in your mind- this was not it. Might have been carved from the chuck end of the animal but it was not something I would have served in a moderately high priced Chop House. The flavor was unremarkable. The cook was uneven- some medium rare, some very rare and un-chewable. I was told that it was served with a demi-glace which I refused- and I could see why it needed some disguise and flavor. It needed it. I ate it because I was hungry and with a guest and did not want her to feel uncomfortable. Dessert- I had a freshly brewed cup of coffee with cream and it was very good. My guest ordered the Crem Brulé. She took 2 small spoons full and remarked that it was not very good because the custard was grainy. Our server removed it from the table and the bill. Speaking of bills, with a glass of wine, a Martini and the food mentioned above, the bill with VA state tax, Suffolk County tax ( ????) came to $201.10 If this is the standard level of food I cannot recommend. read more

First time here after several years. Still has a great atmosphere that makes you feel relaxed and enjoy a nice drink. I ordered the boneless brisket , it is served over grits with a nice mustard sauce. The combination is magnificent. Was not expecting the flavor that came with the grits. The ribs were tender and full of flavor, when you cut into them, it was like cutting butter. I paired this with a Basil Hayden old fashioned. Our families dining experience was amazing! We were helped by a very kind waitress named Johanna. I give her 5 stars alone. The steak...the streak was the real star of the show. My parents got a dinner for two and let me try a piece of their medium well done 8 oz, it was the most tender steak I had ever put in my mouth! You didn't need teeth the chew this bad boy. Seasoned perfectly. My boyfriend and I got the stuffed flounder which was also amazing! The atmosphere was great! Even the salt and pepper shakers looked cool! If I could rate this place...oh wait...I can. 10/10. 5/5. I give it the ultimate rating. Oh and be sure to try the garlic parm potato rounds. I'm not sure why the rating for this place is so low - I visited for the first time recently and really enjoyed it! The building is beautiful and the decor is classy but you don't feel like you need to be super dressed up to be there. Our server was fantastic- gave us all kinds of information on the steaks and options. Although it's a steak place, I just had to have the duck - it was delightful! And then I had the cobbler for dessert - also quite tasty. It's pricey - and everything comes ala cart - but I'm used to that at fancy steak places. They also have a lovely patio with a fire pit - a great place to relax and enjoy after dinner dessert/drinks. I'm looking forward to going back soon! read more

We drove from Norfolk to Riverstone for our anniversary because it had always been an impeccable dining experience. In the past, the place really shined. It has lost that shine. We were seated at the kitchen door. They were mostly empty, so the "no other table" for you excuse does not hold. The Caesar Salad was tiny for $11.00. Bottled dressing? The Porterhouse was so thin it only had one side. Cooked perfectly, but for over $60.00 you expect a thick steak. 24oz? Seriously? Honestly, the food was delicious, just not much of it. Dingy walls did not add to the dining experience. Seriously, paint is cheap. The waitstaff were excellent, the food was delicious. It really came down to tiny portions and poor housekeeping. Maybe it's my OCD but this light fixture not lining up with the woodwork made me twitchy. What kind of electrician installs a fixture like this? The attention to detail needs to return. My husband was trying to find a nice restaurant to celebrate my 30th birthday. Originally he was recommending some other steakhouse in VB but then ultimately landed on River Stone Chophouse and I couldn't be more grateful for the experience. Was the atmosphere beautiful and inviting? ABSOLUTELY. The hostess was a doll, I didn't catch her name but she had pink curls. The food.... I mean the 22oz aged steak?! To DIE FOR. But the best part of the experience was our waitress Jamie. She was so friendly from the very beginning and so knowledgeable on everything we asked about. Her overall welcoming and warm personality will be the reason I come back to this restaurant for any special occasion I celebrate. I also have to commend the rest of the Calvary who brought us our meals and passerby employees ensuring our experience was the best it could be. Lastly, and just as important, the chef bartender and pastry chef that make this restaurant truly worth it. 25/10 recommend. read more

I had an absolutely amazing dinner at River Stone Chophouse! It was Restaurant Week, so we made Friday night reservations (party of 5). They did wait to seat us until our full party arrived, but that was fine and the hostess was very understanding that traffic was heavy. Lauren was simply amazing! She was very knowledgeable, attentive, friendly, and accommodating. I would request to have her again when I return. We started with drinks and appetizers. The sangria was so good. It was a great blend of fruit and spirits. The lobster stew was very flavorful and the texture was smooth and creamy. I'm not a huge lobster fan, but really enjoyed this choice. My friend had the house salad and it looked delicious. There was also complimentary bread. For an entree, I ordered the 12oz dry aged delmonico (ribeye) prepared medium well. The restaurant has a signature demi-glace and it's delicious. The steak was cooked perfectly, very tender, and well seasoned. Although it came with smashed potatoes and broccolini, we also ordered 3 shareable sides: sweet potato casserole, sherried skillet mushrooms, and collard greens. All 3 were very tasty, my favorite being the sweet potato casserole. For dessert, the apple crisp was a great choice. It was warm and sweet, with a perfectly crisp topping. 5 Stars! Everyone from the host/hostess, bar staff, our server Karley, and manager Ben were so friendly and knowledgeable. Being from Hawaii, wagyu beef is well known & always available so I had to try their wagyu burger and I must say it was one of the best burgers I have ever had! This is the perfect date night spot. Really excellent service. Our server, Lisa, was perfectly attentive and skilled at making it the perfect experience. Honestly, she made the meal. There's good food at a lot of restaurants but great service is hard to find. Our drinks were delicious (cherry sour and old dominion fashioned), and every aspect of our meal was divine. There was a ton of food, and we're enjoying the leftovers! We started with the charcuterie (SUCH a good choice). Each component was great in its own right. The charred brie was particularly succulent, and the pimento cheese was addictive. Our main courses were the aged ribeye, served with demi glace and a blue cheese butter (we requested on the side), and a beef stew topped with puff pastry. Both were excellent. We also ordered a side of broccolini with browned butter and the mac and cheese (with many cheeses!). They were both great, but by that point we were full, but we've enjoyed the leftovers. A word on leftovers/takeout: the attention to detail in this area was impeccable. After our appetizer, and before the main course, Lisa, our server, offered to box up the remainder of our charcuterie. She delivered it to the hostess desk, and gave us a ticket, so we could pick it up at the conclusion of the meal. Everything was boxed with care in thick cardboard takeout boxds, separating liquidy items (like pickles and chow chow) from dry (like crackers), as not to make them soggy. I was going to give it a 3.5 so I rounded it up to 4. I saw this place dropping off some vehicles for my buddies detail shop. So I took a date there. We were sat right underneath in AC vent. Then, it took 25 minutes for my waiter to come to the table. Fortunately though, after 12 minutes of sitting there, another waiter came up and told me mine was busy but he wanted to get me some drinks to tide me over. It was not super busy so all I can think of is that my waiter was on break. The Caesar salad was okay. The Philly cheesesteak spring rolls were better but not the best I've ever had. Oh I had a Kansas City New York strip with a bone in it and my date had a bone in pork shop that was stuffed. The steak was pretty good and so grizzled that it almost tasted a little like popcorn. The pork chop was actually amazing. I had tried there corn side dish but I did not like it at all. I did not say anything because I don't like to complain about food I just didn't eat it and didn't ask for a box. They had Lil Book bourbon which was nice. I had 3 of those at $30 a piece and a bottle of Rose Regale. All-in-all it was a $375 meal. My server was very nice and I complemented him to the manager. But I also didn't want to spew negativity. I told them I had to wait 25 minutes but the service was nice. I drove 30 minutes to try this place. Thinking that it was upscale and paying as much as I did I'll probably never be back because I had to wait 25 minutes for somebody to come to the table and the only thing that I really truly enjoyed was my main dish and alcohol. NYE dinner 2021 and it had its highs and lows. Started with the wedge salad and it had slightly too much dressing but all good. For dinner hubby had the 8oz filet with mashed potatoes and broccoli and I had the 8oz filet surf and turf. Filets were cooked perfectly rare and that was awesome but the serving size of the side dishes were super small. Our food came out on a small appetizer looking plate, I guess that was to confuse us into thinking the food was more IDK. The food service was slow as it took a solid hour between my salad and the dinner and the place was not packed at all. Not sure if there was a kitchen staffing shortage but our server said nothing like it was normal. Good experience but I can get this in VB I don't need to drive out to Suffolk for this. read more

An amazing dining experience. The entire staff was welcoming. Our server knew the menu like the back of his hand and made great suggestions for the best oysters suited to the taste we like. They were delicious! I had the crabcakes and they were so thick and tasty, I had more than enough for leftovers! The street corn was very spicy and my husband loved it. All the sides come family style so we had plenty to share. The steak was tender, juicy and seasoned to perfection. Perfectly cooked mid rare. We really enjoy dining here and decided this is where we would celebrate our 21st anniversary. We both ordered something different and we're not disappointed. The crab cakes are SO good. I switched out my sides and got fries because I LOVE the dipping sauces and the fries are fresh cut. You get three dips!!!My husband ordered the meatloaf. He enjoyed it but did state it could use a little more seasoning/flavor. He also ordered 2 drinks (I don't remember the name) and thoroughly enjoyed them. The sweet potato casserole is also yummy. We had a lot of everything . The environment is wonderful and they specialize in pairing wine with your meal. Make sure you make reservations! I keep trying to like this place but it's time to stop trying to make fetch happen. The food is okay but despite the cost of the steaks here mine have not been tender each time I've ordered. The Philly cheese steak egg rolls are probably the best thing I've tried. If you're looking for an entree the duck would probably be your best bet. I was recommend to try the surf and turf that comes with a stuffed filet. Again a pretty tough steak (and no I don't order my steak well or medium well) with a price tag of $60. I've had better steaks at some of the chain places in the area. They do try to feature some pretty interesting cocktails on the menu. For me the drink menu is their saving grace. If you plan to just have drinks and some apps you'll likely have a good time. But that brings me to their staff. The service is hit or miss. I've had some really great servers and some that feel like I'm bothering them to be there. It gives me a weird vibe that there are some employees who act like that. I would be more inclined to come back for just drinks and apps if the wait staff didn't have such off putting vibes. Anyway you aren't missing out on much here. read more

I have eaten at River Stone Chophouse twice in the last three weeks. Both times I had a very enjoyable experience. The first time we ate in the dining room and two days ago we dined on the patio. Both areas are comfortable and appealing. Both times the service was absolutely excellent. Both times the food was delicious. The first time my friends and I all ordered off the appetizer menu and we were very happy with our selections. I ordered the steak bites and the loaded baked potato sundae. They were so good. I was stuffed and so were my friends. We passed up dessert. A friend let me know they have a great cheeseburger on the bar menu so, being a cheeseburger lover since I was a little kid, two days ago we sat on the patio and ordered from that menu. The cheeseburger was served with fresh, hand cut, hot, delectable french fries. The burger was very good but a little undercooked for my taste. I ordered my burger cooked medium and it arrived medium rare. I don't dislike medium rare but know that it's not wise to eat hamburger that undercooked. It's not like the old days now we must be careful. However, I decided to eat it while everything was nice and hot. It was very good. The bun was perfectly toasted, the lettuce was crisp and fresh and the tomato was a nice large slice. It was a delicious dinner. My mojito was well made and the cheesecake we split was very tasty. I have been searching for the best cheeseburger in the 757 for over 6 years and this one ranks as No. 2. Waitress was amazing with our huge party- the only reason for 3 stars. Entree, not so much. Ordered the filet, medium. Came out well done and consistency like shoe leather. I let the waitress know, didn't eat more than one bite (was too tough to even chew). She offered to send it back for a remake, but, the place was packed and food took 45 minutes to come out as it was- didn't want to wait another 45+ minutes. When my check came, the manager was nice enough to comp me one $9 beer for the $38 steak that was ruined and I didn't eat. Lesson learned. Went here tonight the weekend before our 25th Anniversary, which I mentioned when getting the reservation, and only the bar was available which was fine. Let's start off with the service for this pricey establishment. We were seated promptly by the host, but almost immediately the male bartender came over to us and asked in a challenging way if we had reservations, and we said we did. "Did the host seat you?" and we said yes and he walks off without saying a word. Ok, not a friendly greeting. Our main waitress, Sarah, was friendly and got us drinks ok but forgot to tell us the specials and the soup of the day, which we overhead about from another table's waitress 10 minutes after we ordered. Sarah admitted she forgot, she said she always forgets to mention the specials! ? We ordered 2 steaks and asparagus and received the asparagus about halfway through our steaks. Bad timing/coordination. Also my beer stayed empty for 10 minutes while multiple waitstaff walked by. There were only 4 beers. Waitress says " we have an IPA, a red, a brown" but she didn't know the brewery names. The wine list was fine per my wife. Now on to the food. I know how to prepare and cook steaks so I was slightly leery of ordering a steak. I got the 28-day dry aged 22 oz Ribeye for $53 wondering if the cut and the grilling of the steak would be exceptional, far and above what I could grill. The answer was no. My wife's words, not mine, "you could have done a steak that well or better" and I had to agree. To their credit, it was cooked to a perfect medium rare as ordered but the seasoning was minimal and the cut didn't seem that much different than what I typically grill and I had some gristle to deal with. My wife's filet was also cooked to the requested medium rare but seasoning was somewhat lacking. When we did receive our asparagus, at least 10 minutes after we received our steaks, the asparagus was good yet it had a sauce on it that we couldn't figure out. It was ok but the sauce didn't add much and was not as flavorful as it looked. This was our second visit to Riverstone Chophouse and again while we had a reasonably good time neither visit met our expectations for high food quality nor service given the restaurant's pricing. It is unlikely that we'll give them a 3d chance to be honest. For $200 for a 2-person dinner we just expected more. read more

You are paying for the décor not the food. The décor hides the fact that this chophouse has no idea how to cook a steak, and the managers do not care. I ordered the filet mignon cooked to medium. This filet mignon was the worst tasting steak I have ever had. I told the manager the steak was horrible. There was no reaction from her. She then asked if I wanted her to bag it up to take home. The fact that the manager knew the quality of the steak and did nothing tells me she has a low expectation from the cooks. I could go on with this story but the bottom line is, if you want décor this maybe your place. If you want a good steak, do not waste your time here. read more
