I've visited here at least a dozen times, both as a homeowner buying lumber and materials for my…read moreown small projects, and as an employee of a local plumbing company that has an account here, and have had no problems or complaints. Yes, their lumber costs more than the big box stores, but it's definitely better quality; besides, I like supporting a local business over a corporate giant. Their service is also light years better than Home Depot or Lowe's; the inside sales people at the service counter are professional in their demeanor and knowledge. I like their system for purchasing lumber and building materials. You go inside the store first; tell someone at the service counter what you need; and pay for the material. Then, you drive your truck inside the lumber warehouse, where you can either load the lumber yourself, or have an employee load it for you. It's much better than struggling to navigate a cart full of lumber through a big box store. The store itself has a decent selection of fasteners; a fair selection of tools; and only limited selections of specialty items such as electrical and plumbing. It's not trying to be a big box store, or a hardware store. But, as far as general building supplies, it's pretty much got everything covered. They recently started selling appliances also.

The following week I went with cash in hand to pay for the materials for the project. Purely miraculously coincidentally they claim prices went up by $350 in one week. I get this lame excuse from the counterperson saying well lumber prices change weekly. The problem is lumber's down anywhere from 3 to 5% in the past month. So what they did was quote me a price a week earlier for in stock the same as they had in stock when I arrived and they raised the price $350. I asked to speak to a manager no manager comes out I ask for a phone call no manager calls. This is bait and switch lumber prices did not increase they decided to just arbitrarily and randomly raise prices and not honor what was quoted. I've spent over $40,000 over the years at Coventry lumber. Because they would not honor their prices I will never go back to them again.

The friendly staff are helpful and can point you in the right direction for what you need. There's an information desk to the left when you walk in and you can usually ask questions there, if there's no one there the cashiers can help. They do so many different things that I didn't know about - they rent power tools and it's super affordable (I rented a sander for 4 hrs for $10), they repair screen doors, they have garden supplies...the list goes on. After just a couple of days, I tried to return my order, unopened, in full cartons, with a sales receipt, and purchase tile in a different color. I fully understood that I would be charged a 15% restocking fee. The salesperson told me when I purchased the tile that it was "in stock" and coming from their NY warehouse. When I tried to return it though, the store manager told to me it was a "Special Order" and the sale was final. How is something coming from your own warehouse a special order? Sound like B.S. to me! Buy your tile someplace else. The big box stores let you return single tiles, in opened cartons and with or without a sales receipt and there is no restocking fee, period!

Of course a lot of the stuff is wood, like fences, cool light posts and mail box poles, huge and elaborate play sets for kids, nice sheds, gazebos and pavilions, tables, chairs and stools and my favorite, little wooden bridges. I've always wanted a bridge in my back yard, just wish I had a stream or river to put it over. Walpole also has some very cool and creative gates, arbors, cupolas and lattice thingies. If you actually make it inside the store you will see gigantic and very impressive looking bird houses. These aren't just little boxes nailed to a pole but a seemingly endless variety of shapes and sizes for everything from humming birds to pterodactyls. Lots of bird baths so the avians in the houses can stay clean and cool spheres, thermometers, wind chimes, garden critters and great looking weather vanes. Even high quality basketball hoops and backboards. All kinds of things that you probably never thought of but once you see will desperately desire. Some of the stuff you can take home in your pocket, other things you need a huge truck to move. I love going here just to look around, I seem to find new things every time. Sure, a lot of the stuff is basically useless and unnecessary and this isn't Wal-Mart, the prices aren't cheap. But if you are looking for a bird house that probably has more room than most people's homes, an baroque and ornate moon gate, a fat little Hotai Buddha, a lighthouse weathervane or a cool but totally useless and frivolous little bridge, this is the place.
