River's End used to be a unique place we enjoyed visiting every time we came to Nantahala; a highlight was their herb/onion bread, used on sandwiches, served with a block of cheese, or with soup or chili. It had an emphasis on healthy, hearty food suitable for cold rafters or Appalachian Trail hikers. The only special offering that remains from the original River's End is "sherpa" - an ultra-healthy pile of rice and vegetables. It's now a generic "Chotchkie's/Friday's" kind of place in many ways, down to the blah graphic design of the menus. There's some NOC memorabilia on the walls and you have a view of the river, but the food is boring. River's End remains an acceptable place to get a burger and fries (which is good since there are few other restaurants without driving out of Nantahala Gorge), but there's not much special about the food anymore. Too bad, since it used to be a unique restaurant. Boo to NOC. read more

It's convenient. Good place to get out of the afternoon summer rain storms. I ordered the Sherpa veggie rice. The fresh veggies were pretty good but the rice was a little undercooked. Members of my family ordered chili and the meat lovers or "protein" pizza. I recommend sticking with pizza and chili. Also keep in mind that they are a bit understaffed so service was pretty good (everyone is very nice) but a little slow if you're used to a faster pace and are from a big city. read more

I wish I could say good stuff, since I love the NOC and have been eating here for decades, every time I was in the area from paddling the river or coming off trail. I used to be SO good, but the quality has dropped the last several years. No inspiration, no 'fire' like it used to have. I don't know if the chef is tired or if the staff really don't want to shine any more. I just don't know if I will be back after my next camping trip in the area. Get it back, guys. Every table has a view of the river, and almost every one sits directly over it - a very pleasant place for lunch. Menu is limited and a bit pricey, but the quality is good. Definitely worth stopping in after spending some time on the Nantahala. read more

We were on a group bike (motorcycle) ride through the mountains and the day we were traveling it was raining. The whole group of us came in wet and cold. The owner was INCREDIBLE. He let us put our wet gloves, sweatshirts and clothes (down to our dry stuff) into the dryer as we waited out the rain. He was super nice and so great to us. They had a great cup of hot cocoa and good sandwiches. We were totally blessed by his hospitality and then he turned up the heaters in the outdoor patio where were overran the place. We went here twice while vacationing in the area. Highly recommend the White Chicken Chili Sherpa Rice. It's huge so you may not finish it all and that's okay because it makes a great leftover. Burgers are great. Pizza is excellent. Trout was fresh (it ought to be). I had the trout cakes and they were good but probably could use a bit less filling. Tasty though. Nothing beats that view. Right on the Nantahala, it's as good as it gets. If you can get a seat outside, then so much the better but indoor seating has very nice views too. read more

We visit this establishment each time we come to this area (8 years). We stay nearby and have had breakfast, lunch and dinner here at various times. I can't remember ever being disappointed with our meals. Wait staff is friendly and service is usually pretty quick. It can get quite busy during rafting season and the fall but they do a good job accommodating everyone. Great views of the river. You can dine inside or out and they have a good selection of local brews also. My favorites: the Tail of the Dragon burger with tots ( burger is spicy and tots have a great dipping sauce) and the Big Fat Greek pizza is absolutely delicious. read more

Once a great "go to" place for breakfast. Always loved it. Left Bryson City this morning for a motorcycle ride to breakfast and was thoroughly disappointed. The menu has changed drastically from what I remember (beautiful omelets, pancakes, cereals, etc.). Now the menu is very limited, ala carte, and expensive. The noise level on the deck was unbelievable. The waitress was attentive but that was the only positive. Next time we will stay in Bryson City and eat at the Everett Street Diner where the menu and quality are consistently good. I do not know what lunch is like and will probably never find out because I won't be suckered twice. read more

Food is ok. Service is terrible. We gave this place 2 chances and both times were bad experiences. On our first visit, our server Mark was rude and my daughter didn't get her Chicken Sherpa until the rest of the table was finished eating. We asked for refills of water and after ten minutes we didn't receive the refills. Got Mark's attention and he rudely said, "Yeah. Water. I KNOW!" The pizza is just below Little Caesar's in quality and the Sherpa dishes are just ok. My daughter said the chicken Sherpa was like "bad Chinese food with cheese on top" Our second experience started out well with a very friendly host but our waitress wasn't nearly as nice. We explained that we only had a short period to eat because we arrived on he train and were assured that we would have time to eat. Long story short, we had to take our food to go and cancelled our beer order b/c the waitress forgot about it until we were getting ready to leave. As we were cashing out and she realized that her tip was going to be small she gave me an attitude and told me that we were asking for a lot in 30 minutes. I told her that I didn't have time to argue with her because I had to get back on the train (more on that in my GSMR review). I wish I could remember he name so I could call her out on Yelp. Avoid this place if you value customer service at a sit down restaurant. Take out would be the best option. read more

First the good here. The portion sizes are great. The atmosphere especially on the outside porch is awesome. Server was pleasant. The white bean chili was really really good. Make sure to get it with cheese. Now for the things that were not as good. The sauce on the pasta is insanely salty. There's no reason to have that much salt in sauce. The plain noodles almost looked like they were burnt. This place is known for their pizza but I thought it was nothing to write home about. Good option after some time at NOC. read more

We have property in nearby Topton, NC and always drive over to the NOC/River's Edge when we're in town visiting from Florida. This is our go-to lunch spot. My personal favorite is the black bean chili. I get it almost every time and load it up with jalapenos and cheddar on top. I also like the white bean and chicken chili. A cold draft beer is always an option, but they also have a great selection of craft beer by the bottle. My husband enjoys their burgers with fries and salads. They also have sandwich wraps and something called sherpas (too greasy for me). We've been going here for years, but we've never ordered a pizza. They have a good selection. It's a casual restaurant with some people in post-kayaking attire and others in hiking duds. Service is friendly and hot food is hot, while cold food is cold. Enjoy! read more

We went for dinner last evening, having come over from Asheville to listen to some music. We were seated well but received no attention for a little too long, despite the cluster of "guides" around the host stand. As soon as we asked, our server appeared from the back. I would suggest coaching the others to greet the guests and go find the designated server... Then there was the food... We decided to splurge on hamburgers because we don't eat them often and it was a special day. The first clue was when I saw the processed frozen patty though I dove in anyway. No flavor, kinda mealy... Then the bun began to disintegrate, because it had obviously been frozen and thawed as well. Very disappointing for a $10 burger. The fries were adequate but, you guessed it, frozen. Our server was attentive but a bit embarrassed. I can't comment on the other menu items but this experience suggests corner-cutting that erodes quality. read more

We really liked this place! The best part of it is the area - you can chill by the river, walk the bridge, and enjoy the atmosphere. While eating you get to watch the rafters and other people playing along the river. The food was good and the servers are friendly. View was amazing but food was just so so. Trout cakes were gross!! They came out overlooked on the edge of being burnt and were VERY crunchy like a oversized masticated fish nugget. The only thing this restaurant has going for it is location. I end up eating here from time to time just because the group I'm with insist. The food never fails to disappoint me. Yesterday I tried the fish tacos. There was probably about 11/2 ounces of actual fish with about a cup of what tasted to be store bought cole slaw. This place fills up very quickly during lunch and dinner hours, but for a good reason. The trout burgers are fantastic. The restaurant overlooks the Nantahala river. The best time to go is during the Nantahala Gear Festival in late September. The last time I went, I just barely (less than 15 mins) made it into the place before they closed. But I got my food very quickly and the staff were very courteous. read more

Had dinner here after a couple days on the AT. Service was friendly and quick, although we could hear some, ahem, colorful language coming from the kitchen. We shared a generous appetizer of chips and hummus, then I ordered a tasty grilled chicken wrap with a side of "sautéed veggies " - which turned out to be a ramekin of spinach swimming in olive oil, topped with melted cheese. Not what I expected. My companion ordered a burger which they deemed passable. But the meal was capped off with an excellent (and again generous) blackberry cobbler , topped with a scoop of ice cream bigger than my fist. There aren't really many other dining options here for hikers anyway, but we were glad this one was pretty quality. Take note that they close at 7, though! Seemed ridiculously early to me, but I guess they're mainly here to serve hikers and day guests. read more

Average food quality. Service is inconsistent. The breakfast menu is misleading. Example 1: breakfast burrito has a picture of a plate with salsa and sour cream. Surprise - sour cream is extra. Example 2: breakfast sandwiches area of menu shows a breakfast plate. Surprise - pricing is for sandwiches only. Example 3: picture of the breakfast plate under the breakfast sandwiches - 2 eggs, 3 strips bacon, hash browns, and biscuit. Surprise - a la carte costs you $11.79. Ouch. That does not include coffee and tip! Here's a tip - get your food costs under control and stop gouging your customers. Unreasonable pricing for the quality and service. read more
