Fun and Fulfilling Food....great ambiance. My neighborhood place for delicious food, good music,and friendly clientele & Staff. Celebrated the Super Bowl win with all patrons and Staff. Plus the chickens on the stairs outside, who were as excited as the customers, flitting about and squawking and flicking their feathers! Great memories there! Ditto for Playoff Game when Garret Hartley kicked the winning field goal that put the Saints into the Supr Bowl. It's a memory I'll always treasure at the River Shack. Also, my dad was a Railroad Man, who worked the Huey P 'til he retired. He told me about the Rivershack, as it was his and his fellow workers hangout after shift! A real homey-feel of yore! I spotted this place via Facebook one day and always said I was going to stop and try it the next time I was in the area. Well, today was the day after our visit to the Audubon Zoo. First, let me give you a little history of the place. The building is over 100 years old and started as a grocery store right next to the levee of the Mississippi River. Then it became a colored only bar. Today it is known as the Rivershack Tavern and has been for the last 30 years. 30 years and counting is a long time for a restaurant, so it must be doing something right and let me tell you, they are. From the moment you walk inside you notice the barstools at the bar. Then you seat yourself and immediately you are greeted by a server with friendly service and a smile. Lots of craft beers and drink specials. The same goes for the choices on the menu, lots of them. We started with the Boudin egg rolls and they were great starters. My wife and I split the "see-food platter" which had fried catfish filet, a much of fried shrimp and fried oysters and a piece of alligator sausage, fries, and a small house salad. Everything was delicious especially the alligator sausage. For dessert, my wife had the chef special of chocolate mousse pie and I had the staple "bread pudding" Both were yummy, however, the chocolate mousse pie was sort of hard from the freezer and the bread pudding was hot and took a bit to cool but when it did. The pudding had no chance as I kept eating until I couldn't eat anymore. They have a patio and live bands on the weekend. This was my first experience eating here. The setting reminds me of a old rustic saloon. It really dark and dreary inside however, very clean. There is a bar area and tables for seating. There is also a billiard table area for those of you enjoy playing. For starters I ordered from the Shack -A-Tizers Menu I indulged in the Fried Pickles and Boudin Egg-rolls. The pickles and egg-rolls were cooked perfectly. As for the Boudin Egg-rolls,since I am a Boudin Junkie I would have preferred to experience more flavor in the Boudin. For my meal I ordered from the Boigers & Fries menu. My selection was the Shank U. I originally ordered this item thinking it was a all Patton's Hot Sausage sandwich. It was actually a burger topped with a Patton's Hot Sausage patty. I ordered it medium well based on my initial thought of the full sandwich being hot sausage patties. The sandwich was flavorful although I would have preferred my beef patty meat temperature to be medium. Overall it was a pretty good experience. I will definitely have to visit again really soon. I have been coming to this Tavern for many years. I finally get a chance to write a review. I actually live not that far so whenever there is a chance to come, me and the lady like to sit at the bar with the fancy stools and drink. We have our own bartender that we like to have serve us and she is amazing! Now on to the food. I always get the Rustys Chicken Ranch sandwich! Talk about amazing!! You get chicken breaded in Italian bread crumbs on a bun with ranch, assorted cheeses and bacon. Talk about make your heart skip a beat just thinking about it. Have some tatter tots so you can dip it in some rivershack sauce and you have yourself a meal! The food is great, the workers are awesome, and the atmosphere is inviting. With bands playing almost every night, this is the place to go in old Jefferson. read more

Sitting at the bar, hearing the music, looking at the decor; this feels like a bar straight from 1973, and I love it. I so do wish I could remember the bartender's name, but she was very attentive and kind. Beer selection is expansive with a good variety of taps, food was also very tasty. This place is 100% a "regulars" bar, I definitely got some weird looks walking in, but was swiftly welcomed into friendly conversations with the others sitting beside me. I really enjoyed it. Not at the top of my list to visit again, but I promise you I'll eventually make my way back here. read more

This place is amazing. I went here for lunch before picking my dog up from her vacation, and had some of the tastiest food on my trip. The atmosphere was fantastic, beer/drink selection was great and the menu was unbelievable. We got the BBQ shrimp and Tex-Mex burger, both were delicious. The service was what made our experience, the bartender was awesome. She was so attentive, caring and knowledgeable. Next time I'm in town, I will be sure to go here. read more

Fun little neighborhood bar with good food and drinks! We were lucky enough to go on a night that had a little live band outside under the tent and we loved it. The band was great, people were dancing, and they didn't require masks! We also ordered dinner. We got the Buffalo wings which I recommend. They were crunchy and tasty! I also ordered the shrimp wrap. It was tasty however I wouldn't get it again. The shrimp were breaded in Italian breadcrumbs and personally I don't like shrimp breaded that way when they are fried. Although I didn't like the shrimp, the wrap was fully loaded! It was huge! read more

We are in New Orleans for our wedding and running some last minute errands. Looked up somewhere today near the bakery and this restaurant had great reviews. On the outside it looked like a dive bar but looks are deceiving. Everything we ate was delicious. My fiancé had a burger and fries. He asked for gravy and they brought out two Different gravies: a regular gravy and roast beef gravy. The roast beef gravy was THE most delicious thing I've ever had. I had a club sandwich which was great and sweet potatoes fries. Sometimes restaurants screw up sweet potato fries, they did not, these fries were cooked to perfection. I want to say THANK YOU to our waitress who brought out toys for our 15 month old who was having a fit. THANK YOU. he was losing his mind. read more

So wonderfully and truly divey, the Rivershack Tavern is exactly my kind of place. We perched on a couple of big comfy barstools and excitedly watched a couple of March Madness games while tossing a few cheap drinks back, surrounded by a lively bunch and kitschy decor. I loved it. I wouldn't expect world-class service, but everyone was friendly and decently quick. It was also super cheap, which as a budget-conscious millennial who does not make millions, I very much appreciated. Sans tip, it ran less than $15 for a couple o pints of beer and a Bloody Mary. Rivershack Tavern is friendly and brash, but not at all intimidating (not sure if there are dive bars here that are scary, but where I've lived in the past, there sure have been). Add "cheap" to the mix (Happy Hour features two for one draft beers) because it's a requirement of course. Add in big platters of insanely fattening food (I mean, I had a freaking *platter* of fried vegetables. I think the waitress sprained a wrist setting it down in front of me) and holy hell in a hand basket, we've got ourselves a winner here. The cook has some kind of magic going on in the fryer because this stuff was perfectly crunchy and tasty and how it wasn't greasy, is beyond me. Magic, I tell ya. Prepare yourself, for you may not be able to stop shoveling the fried goodness in your mouth. I came with a friend on a weekend, and was impressed with the kitsch of the exterior. There seems to be outdoor seating, but I am sure you have to let them know you are there. There is just enough parking. Walking in, we picked our own table. The bar stools did look cool with the legs looking like real legs. The food all seemed to be greasy burgers, fries and the like. The fried pickles were interesting. While I did walk away full, I also walked away with regret from a meal I knew would talk back later, and that it did. Service was decent, the restrooms were clean. There was a trace of cigarette smoke, and the whole place could use a deep cleaning. I'm not sure I will be back. read more

I've been to Rivershack for lunch, dinner, and just drinks many times, and I love it. It's a classic "road house" bar, with a very large dining area and some outdoor seating. It feels very well "lived in", and it's definitely a bar, so I wouldn't put it in the "nice first date" category, but I do love this place. It does get crowded at lunch, but I've always been able to get a table. They have a really good sandwich and burger menu. Besides standard fare, they have some nice combination/specialty sandwiches that are really good. I love every single sandwich I've gotten here, every time. I also love their Tex Mex burger, which I joke about taking a year off my life each time because it's just decadently good. Their onion rings and fries are great. Their beer selection is great. Other than the Tex Mex burger, I won't single out the other sandwiches and options because they really are all very good. They have daily specials that are also very good. And, every single time I go, I'm impressed with the service. Again, it can be crowded and busy, and the servers will be running a lot, but they're always very friendly and attentive. In fact, the one very big thing that makes me go there less often is the live music. I know, it's a road house. They're supposed to have music. But it's very common for the band setup to reduce the number of tables, and/or for the music to start while we're eating and talking and relaxing, and that just changes things. They have bands several nights, and they start fairly early. So, if I go for dinner, I go early enough to avoid the band. And, I've learned to sit closer to the bar at night, because I've actually been asked (very politely) to move to another table so they can remove the tables near the band stage. These are small, local bands--often the type that draw the bands' families and friends to cheer them on--so it can be nice. But you just need to know that your meal may get noisy. During crawfish season, they do boils on Friday, so it'll get very crowded then, FYI. Overall, this is one of my favorite bars to go to for food. And let me emphasize--this is not just good "bar food", this is good food. With a smile. read more

This was on my walk and had to snap a picture because there are always cars in front. The only time there are no cars is when it's closed. This is a unique restaurant and bar that has live music several times a week. The bar stools are dressed with different outfits from jeans to hose to underwear. Lots of different drinks to try and the Shack Sauce is to die for. Put that Shack sauce on everything from fries to seafood. Everytime I come here,I smile and that is worth 4 stars,also the cheap drinks ,friendly staff and portions of their decent food. I mean,the nachos they offer are HUGE,yes..HUGE,first time we order we thought it was kind of a mistake (12 us..for a portion of pork,lots of cheese and etc etc nachos that could feed a 6'2 big guy and another person that loves nachos?!). They also have good margaritas for 6-7 dollars and spirits for 5...I dont know if its happy hour price but we ve been there after 7 and it's still cheap.
