Everything could improve here. It's a lot of money for what you receive. We stayed two nights, drove a very long way and were really excited for our trip. It fell short in amenities in the room and the beds and furniture definitely needed replacing. We didn't find a restaurant on site to eat. The bar was fun, so we spent some time there. It's a beautiful area to visit. Very grateful to have had the chance to visit the area. Upon checking out however, no one behind the desk asked or cared to inquire if we enjoyed our stay, nor thanked us for our visit. Customer service could be much better, as well. My wife and I, had the pleasure of dining at The Gray Eagle Lodge, for the very first time, last night, which had been recommended by friends. I called and made reservations, and looked up their menu and info about the Lodge. Tuesday nights Special, was Braised Pot Roast with Au Gratin potatoes and veggies. I was licking my lips, in anticipation. We arrived entered into a beautiful Log Beamed Great Room Restaurant and a stoked Fire, burning. They seated us in front of the fire. My wife had the Justin Cab to drink, with dinner, as I had beer. Excellent choices, as we both had the Pot Roast Special, I had the salad, Caesar, while my wife had the New England Clam Chowder. The meal was exceptional. There was very little fat on the Pot Roast and the Au Gratins, with string beans and zucchini. We had the blackberry pie a la mode and lemon sorbet, with coffee, fresh cup. Service was excellent, and we both walked out, happy and full. Price is excellent as the Chef, has 50+ years of experience with a culinary education . I had a really disappointing experience because of the front desk lady when speaking in the phone. The woman working at the front desk was extremely rude and unhelpful from the moment I called. Instead of being welcoming or professional, she spoke with an attitude, seemed annoyed by basic questions, and made the whole interaction uncomfortable. When I told her she didn't have to be rude, she proceeded to tell me "nor do you". I didn't know asking questions was inconvenient, if you hate your job so much go work somewhere else. Customer service is a big part of any business, and unfortunately this experience left a very bad impression. I hope management addresses this, because no guest should be treated this way. read more

We were encouraged to make dinner reservations here as the food we were told was exceptional. We were greeted by a very friendly hostess and taken to our table. The building is a log cabin and it is so welcoming and comfortable. Our server, Erin was exceptionally courteous and happy and you could tell she loved her job. We had pre-ordered our entree as we were told it run out quickly. We both ordered the Bison Steak. We had never had Bison before and it was delicious. We were told that the Chef was extraordinary and we believe it!! Meal was a perfect size with delicious mashed potatoes and veggies. We loved the sauce that came with the Bison. Stayed many times over the years. Honestly I don't think they have ever changed the mattresses. The reason we stay is because they are pet friendly. But at $400 a night plus $48 pet fee its become too expensive. Cheaper to leave the pup at home and stay at Elwell or Gold Lake Lodge. read more

While hiking in the Sierra Buttes a few months ago we stumbled upon the Gray Eagle Lodge and decided to check it out. At first look the cabin prices seemed high but after seeing what was included they are very fairly priced. The cabins come with a 3 course dinner and a breakfast. At the far side of the pictured pond is a bench the has a plaque on it about three generations of family spending time there and that pretty much says it all. I find myself hesitating to review this place because it is such a gem and I don't want it to get over booked. As you can see from the menu this is not typical lodge dinning. I had the grilled filet of Salmon with the incredibly delicious butternut squash soup. My wife had the super delicious Flatbread pizza and salad and after tasting my soup wished she had gotten that. So we ordered one to go. Service from the time Sarah checked us in to before dinner drinks from Meghan to dinner service from Jennifer was friendly and courteous. Dinner was excellent and breakfast ample. We will definitely be back for another stay. read more

Terrible service me and my family came in and they refused to sit us and was so rude about the whole situation. She said that there was no way she could sit us because of the wait then one of my family members ask how long the wait was and she never gave us an answer she basically told us that it would be a long time. Then another person of my family asked is there any other restaurant and the host told us that that's hard and that it's hard just to find seating for 2 people. We actually felt like we were not welcomed at all and that she was so rude and disrespectful to me and my family. In my opinion do not eat here if you want to feel welcome this place will not give that to you. read more

My family enjoyed a three night stay here. In most ways, it exceeded expectations. This is a lovely region. The cabins are rustic / no frills (as advertised). The food was excellent -- great choices each morning and night, very good produce (excellent salads), and excellent desserts. We have been to other places where breakfasts and dinners are included, but rarely has the food been so good as Chef Lynn Hagen's. The site has a creek and waterfall and swimming hole, and you can walk/hike up to Smith Lake (and other other lakes nearby). The Lodge has a rowboat at Smith Lake. They will also take kayaks to nearby Salmon Lake, if you want that. We also went horseback riding (views of many lakes!) very close by. If you are looking for a delicious taste of Lakes Basin and Plumas National Forest, this is an ideal home base. Brett and Sarah and every other person on staff here were helpful and pleasant. I would go back in a heartbeat, and I hope I have the opportunity to do so. read more

Dining at Gray Eagle Lodge has a heart-warming traditional rustic Sierra mountain lodge ambience and feel to it. The lodge is 1/3 mile down a gravel drive from the main Lakes Basin road. I think you'll find it is well worth the drive to come to this "off the beaten path" mountain cabin and resort lodge. It has everything you would hope for and more . . . Relax by the fireplace or at the bar for a before dinner cocktail . . . Be seated at your wood table on your (padded) wood chair in one of 2 dining rooms with wood walls with huge wooden trusses supporting the peak wooden ceiling. You get the idea, but check out the photos I've uploaded too. You'll be greeted at the table by the chef, who came around 3 times during our dinner to check that everything was ok, and for very pleasant neighborly and welcoming conversation. The service was very attentive, and all of our needs were met despite the fact they were quite busy and both dining rooms were completely booked. For that reason, I highly recommend a reservation in advance. Tasty cheesy bread arrived promptly. Drinks from the bar included a nicely prepared daiquiri and a very satisfactory Merlot. Caesar salad was served in a crispy parmesan chef-made bowl. Our 2 mains included grilled salmon and prime rib. Both were very satisfactory if not spectacular. Both mains were served with twice-baked potatoes and corn on the cob. Overall very pleasing and satisfying. We had no room for dessert at the time, but brought 1 order of fresh berry cobbler back to the cabin with us for a midnight snack. Hint: don't expect a low fat dining experience. Went to this lodge in May...it was opening day. The owners Brett and Lynn as well as their staff were very nice and have a gem of a place there. Checkin was easy, and we actually got to go in early! The cabin was clean, but the carpets were "moist", maybe they had just been cleaned? Not a big deal. We settled in and took a walk up to the waterfall...very nice grounds. Then back to the cabin for some relaxing and lunch. The whole place is very dog friendly...our pup had a great time. Dinner was amazing! The Chef made the best prime rib I have ever had. Also there were so many other great dishes available, all made fresh and delicious. The wait staff was polite and did a great job. I can't say enough about the food...I was excited to see the daily menu everyday. Breakfast is good as well, great potatoes and always a special to choose from. The lodge is welcoming, and the huge fireplace is so nice. One night we were treated to a live musical performance by a lone man playing guitar. He was very talented. Played lots of Beatles and even some Zepplin! What a treat. There are amazing hiking trails all around. We hiked up to Smith Lake and it was such a great hike. We have two teenagers and they loved playing with all the other kids staying there. They played tag and badminton and hide and seek at night with flashlights. It is a great family scene and we met so many nice people. So why am I taking away 2 stars??? Here is why I rated this place 3 out of 5 stars. The BED! Upon arriving both my wife and I sat on the bed and we were like OH NO! It was a very old mattress with no box spring. It was like sleeping on a plywood base with no cushion. I contacted Brett in the morning of our second day. I told him that my wife and I did not sleep well at all and that my left hand had two numb fingers because my nerve in was pinched from sleeping on that bed. He was very receptive and said he had another mattress that he would swap out for me. That day he replaced the mattress and it was better. By better I mean it did not feel like I was sleeping on plywood. But here's the thing, we were paying about $500 a night for the cabin and for me the bed is the most important element of a place to get away and rest. As of right now I would not be able to stay overnight at the lodge. But if I am ever in the area I would definitely go here for dinner! My recap is this, I really loved the lodge, the staff, and the owners. I loved the river on property, and there were so many great places to hike to. If the beds were replaced with high quality beds and were replaced every 5 years I would have booked a trip for next year. What a nice little gem of a restaurant. It is in the mountains and very cozy. There is a firepit outside and people sitting around it just sipping drinks and chatting. A guy was playing music on his guitar. This looks like a really nice place to stay. I found them to be a bit pricey but when you are a small business I think you have to charge more to make money. The prime rib was like $35. I have had way better prime rib at Buttercup for half the price but Buttercup wasn't there so... ;) I actually had the "fall off the bone" ribs. They were described to me that way. The BBQ sauce was sweet and smokey the way I like it but the ribs absolutely did NOT fall off the bone. They could have used a little more time on the grill. Caesar salad lacked flavor. The dressing was bland but bread was great and I should know, I think we had three baskets of it. lol. Overall it was good and I would go back. read more

My 200th review! This lodge was great! Some friends planned an overnight stay here; the price per couple was $240. Our one night included dinner and breakfast and lunch for the next day. The lodge will even pack your lunch, as long as you request it the night before. There are lots of trails and lakes in the area. Our group actually got confused and ended up on a 6-mile trail towards Smith Lake. We later found out that the lodge has a little tin boat on the lake (chained/locked to a tree) that guests can use for free, just ask for the key at the front counter. Cell connectivity isn't that great, but they did have lodge Wi-Fi, but it wasn't that great either. It worked mainly in the lodge, and not so much in our cabin. During our Saturday night stay, we scored a 3-course meal, which included a prime rib dinner. The servers may not mention dessert is included, but it is...so make sure to take advantage of that! They also have s'mores kits to enjoy around the campfire. Apparently, this place gets booked up fairly quick, so be sure to check their website for availability. Our group stayed in "Fir", which slept 4 people (and 1 bathroom to share). read more

Gray Eagle Lodge offers high end restaurant dining in the solitude of the Lost Sierra. They've had chefs from San Francisco bring world class food into the woods. It's not as famous as Mt. Hood's Timberline, but it's certainly worth it. They have delicious dinners, and instead of having a "children's menu",they have the fancier dishes with smaller portions for the younger ones. A rustic, Sierra get-away that cannot be missed! While mosquito-y too early in season and dusty too late, when you hit the Gray Eagle Lodge in season, the wildflowers, waterfalls and cabin-side stream is full of life. When I was there the first time the chef had trouble adapting to my life-threatening (anaphylactic shock) allergies. Let's just say, I ate a lot of salad! For the last many years, I have dined with a very flexible NEW chef who has made my experience at GEL all the better. Yum! I also have a pet pooch....they welcome all pet-owner savvy folk here. They even have poop bags on the property in case you forgot your own, Miss Manners! On hot summer days, you can bask in the sun and they will provide a water bowl for your pet. Furthermore, pets are allowed on trails in the Lakes Basin Area if they are on leash, Simply, a combination made in heaven! Max (the dog) has climbed Mount Elwell and topped the peak of the Sierra Buttes while staying here. Prices are a bit steep compared to other places around the area, but here you get two things: quality meals and a welcoming community environment to all--families, romantic couples, people with dogs, GLBT and more. This is THE best kept secret of Plumas County. Lynne, chef extraordinaire, moved from The Grizzly Grill to here and we were so delighted to find where she landed. For years we dined at Grizzly and are still very happy with it, but this is part of our traditional Thanksgiving meal. My mother going to order the turkey dinner from Grizzly for years, anticipating the amazing meal, having leftovers and then going to cut down a Christmas tree. This is my family tradition for 20+ years. So when we looked up the menu for dinner last night, we were very happy to see Thanksgiving special being offered. We couldn't believe it! We're no longer coming up for Thanksgiving so to get this meal we've longed for and reminisced about every Thanksgiving in the Bay Area was a special gift to us to cap off our stay here for the week. Per usual and even better then we remember, we were served our Thanksgiving meal. We're still talking about that crazy good gravy and stuffing. The turkey is roasted to perfection and the cranberries are so sweet yet tart at the same time. We would've liked to thank Lynne in person but she was super busy making magic happen in the kitchen. Wow! Just wow! The location is beautiful. The restaurant looks like a cabin. Not very spacious inside so reservations are recommended. My husband and I had steaks. Our favorite vacation of every year! Cabins are perfectly basic for a great night sleep and stay; you have everything you need. Minimal and super clean and accommodating. The meals are amazing including the homemade dessert. You will be talking about dinner at breakfast. We just left Graeagle lodge and a truly memorable family vacation. We've already booked for next year. This is the kind of place where generations come year after year, and for good reason. Our children were as thrilled with G.E.L. As my husband and I were. If you want to unplug and bask in high elevation wilderness without the fuss of camping, this is for you. More than glamping, it's a mountain retreat smack in the middle of rugged, beautiful terrain. There are hikes and lakes accessible in every direction. Our kids enjoyed the lakes and swimming hole, game room and just the freedom of playing amongst the trees around our cabin. The food is remarkable! Their Chef created an incredible menu with a multitude of choices each night, all delicious. The soups were a stand out during our stay, and each nights menu was so Mouthwatering it was hard to choose. I did have the fish three times during our stay and each night it was a completely different meal. There is a cozy lodge / dining room with a small bar. The cocktails were perfect, they also had a lovely wine selection and smores packets handed out for the campfire. I was so impressed by the service, hospitality and overall vibe of Graeagle lodge. Great experience, awesome places to bring kids, as there is all kind of activities and accommodations for them. The creek running through the property is SO refreshing to dip into the swimming holes, and there are ankle-deep areas perfect for the tykes! It's also a great jumping-off point for back-packing the region and is a welcome sight when returning from a few nights out in the wilderness (parking for Smith Lake and all the other trails is an 1/8th mile away). We were treated like royalty by Sara at the desk and Bret the owner, and ate, drank, and slept in fine comfort- upgraded from lodge to cabin at no charge and took the difference and tipped the staff- they deserved it. read more

This was my first cabin in the woods adventure. The first view of the property is breathtaking. Nestled down a short winding road, you feel as though you've entered another world. The staff were friendly and helpful, we got checked into our stand alone one room cabin right away. The cabin was super cute and rustic but very comfortable with cozy blankets on the bed and extra pillows.There is a crystal clear creek running through the property that you can wade in and if you follow the trail to the end of the property there is a stunning waterfall. This place is truly a gem! And the food! The first night we had the Prime Rib and flank steak entrees. It was a good size portion and normally I don't eat a large serving of meat but it was so good, I gobbled it up. They also have a nice selection of wines available. Two years ago our meal was out of site and the service was outstanding. This year we brought 6 friends and were bragging about how good it was going to be. All of us agreed on the way home of the following; meat was bad, two people had flank steak that was super bad poorly marinated. I had ribs that we super dry. After having yet another wonderful dinner experience at Gray Eagle Lodge tonight I realized I've failed to write a review for them before! We live locally and try to go up there for dinner several times during the season. It's our favorite place to go when we have company and it never fails to impress. We have actually even gone up and stayed in one of their cabins before for our Anniversary. It's a beautiful location, relaxing and off the grid which is what most of us can use! Brett is a great host and always makes everyone feel welcome. The chef is Lynn Hagen and she's doing a wonderful job, we've never been disappointed. Prime Rib and the Baby Back Rob's are some favs, as well as the Pasta specials. The Lodge itself makes for nice ambiance as well. I'd give it 10 stars if I could! read more

We stayed at Gray Eagle Lodge in August of last year (2012). I am so sorry to say it was a horrible experience. We had rats in our cabin. My 4 year old son accidentally discovered a trap with a dead rat under our bed, things went down hill from there. We were not offered alternative accommodations, instead we were instructed to box our food up, and they brought more traps which we had the unpleasant experience of hearing go off in the night. We then were told that they had been struggling with an infestation in our cabin all summer. THE CABIN SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN RENTED OUT AT ALL with such an unsanitary conditions. Finally, the last straw was watching a rat run across a rafter over our bed. We left a day early. The only compensation we were given was we did not have to pay for the last day - when we weren't even there. Nothing was discounted, no refunds given. Just a mediocre apology. My son still occasionally has nightmares from staying there. We so wanted to love this place and come every year. I will never go back there again.... read more

Gray Eagle Lodge was the best weekend getaway we could have hoped for! We stayed in the Pine Cabin. It was just my fiance and our dog. The food was more than we could ask for and they were so incredibly accommodating for our two year old Golden who was not having being in the cabin by herself. They let us eat every meal outside! Upon our arrival and check in we were handed what appeared to be our invoice save for charges throughout our stay. The invoices estimated price was $279 for two adults and two kids. Upon checkout the invoice was $427!! The owner added gratuity fee of $35, resort fees, and a whopping $50 per kid!! I can't say I have been charged for kids before. On top of the high price there were several issues. We got put in a small apartment. The apartment had no heater. The apartment had a tiny deck. The apartment was above the dance floor. The floor and windows were rattling with the bass until 11pm so my kids couldn't get to sleep. It was so loud up there you couldn't have a conversation. The bathroom had 2 bars of soap. No shampoo, conditioner, or lotion. On top of all of that the price seemed to be higher then people staying in nice quiet cabins that had heaters and decks. I was and still am a bit perplexed by this. These issues were raised to the owner who did not apologize, offer any discount or even seem to care that his customers, a family of four were dissatisfied. We travel a lot and have honestly got better customer service at a holiday inn. Is being above a dance floor with the windows rattling, no heater when it's 35' at night, lack of amenities and poor management worth over $400 a night to you??? It sure wasn't to us.
