I wish I didn't judge a book by its cover...because I would have come here a lot sooner. Unfortunately, I always saw Riviera Maya as a place where people just came to hang out at the bar for their happy hours and sweet frozen drinks and dancing...but we finally came in for dinner. Yes, we were bombarded with a mariachi band...which I actually found quite fun, but you can decide for yourself if you want to be in that room or not. The decor seemed authentic, as opposed to the cheesiness I was originally expecting. The mojitos were very generous and not stingy on the alcohol...the fresh guacamole made at the table was delicious...and my skirt steak was perfectly cooked with all the right fixings. I also disagree about the portion sizes because I really felt that I DID get my money's worth here. I've been looking for good mexican in Stamford and am still looking forward to the opening of Lola's on Bedford. But I'm very glad I finally came in to eat at Riviera Maya...it's certainly worth your try. read more

This place is wayyy overpriced for the amount of food you get and the quality of service. I went with some friends around 3PM in the afternoon. We walked up to sit outside and had to ask 3 separate people for a table because the first two didn't speak English. I'm all about an authentic Mexican experience but I find it ridiculous that no one knew enough English to at least seat us. Once seated we got some chips and salsa for the table and when we asked for more salsa, it never ever came. My friend also ordered a second margarita which never came either (luckily we weren't charged). It just seemed like the employees did not want to be there or even care about the customer. For food, we split a plate of nachos, queso fundido and a vegetarian quesadilla. The nachos tasted good but there were literally only 10 chips on the plate with some refried beans sloped on the top! The quesadilla barely had any cheese in it, was barely grilled and they also put in more vegetables than what was listed on the menu. I hate mushrooms and would have asked for no mushrooms had the menu said there were included. Luckily, none of us had any allergies. The best part was the queso fundito which was very tasty. Another redeeming quality was the margarita, which was really good. I got a frozen mango which was strong but still tasty. My friend LOVED her frozen coconut marg. Came here for lunch, what can I say the service was amazing and the food was just soo delicious, beyond my expecations. I ordered the Mexican Flag Shrimp, yum! The sauce was so flavorful but most importantly the shrimp was such good quality and fresh. It came with sauteed vegetables cooked perfectly al dente and seasoned great. A great Mexican restaurant not only for a vegan (me) but for my omnivore dining companions too! They start you off with a basket of fresh chips and salsa. We ordered guacamole, which is prepared table side to your liking. It's fantastic! A must have! They have the best veggie fajitas anywhere! Not just the usual tired looking peppers and onions, but they serve a sizzling platter of fresh veggies heaped on a bed of vibrant multicolored peppers, onions, including asparagus, carrots, mushrooms, spinach, and zucchini. Served with a side of rice and refried beans, guacamole and poco de gallo. Very generous portion. Excellent! One friend had the hangar steak, and the other a fish dish they both enjoyed. I wish I could give this place zero stars. Came here for dinner with my husband and we ordered food. Waited an hour and nothing. Two tables sat about 30 minutes or more after us and they received their food and we never received ours. We talk to the waiter, he says he put the order in but the kitchen is now closed. We ask for the manager, the manager says we ordered too late despite us explaining to him the situation. Manager didn't care at all. Highly do not recommend this place at all. Reviewed solely on bar/club set up. I was led here to check out the cool nightlife in Stamford, no really. At first I couldn't stop laughing at the one man karaoke show but after a few DOS XX on tap, I chilled out and the hot Latinas started parading in. I mean hot single women everywhere. We went here for cinqo de mayo because we were in the area and a few other mexican places had very long waits. We got in and were seated right away, which should have been a red flag. To start, we ordered the guacamole, which is a must get. They make it tableside and it is fantastic. The chips are also really great. I ordered a frozen strawberry margarita, but when I went to order another was told "the machine" was broken and I couldn't get it frozen anymore. It was just as good on the rocks, but still a little annoying. For my entree I ordered the combo # 2 which was just ok, on par with fast food mexican to be honest. The chimichanga was dry to the point that I asked for extra sour cream. Twenty minutes later I finally got it but wasn't hungry anymore by then. The service here is atrocious. They have a ton of busboys around but of course they are all underage so if it's drinks you are after, you aren't going to get them. Our waiter never came by the table after taking our order for the entire meal, we only got more drinks by following him around the dining room. We witnessed several other tables having service issues as well. This could have been because it was cinqo de mayo and it was busy, but reading other reviews it seems this is the standard. As far as decor goes, it's typical of a tex-mex restaurant. Noise level was a little loud, but nothing you wouldn't expect for cinqo de mayo. In short, I probably wouldn't go here again. read more

Went here for lunch for a friends birthday and the whole experience was terrible. When we first arrived we were seated and the waiter took our drink orders, he came back with the wrong things, and proceeded to develop an attitude when we tried to correct him. Not once did they check on us, and when we asked for other items we had to wait a very long time and ask for it multiple times. At times we would have to get up and go get the simple items we were asking for such as napkins and utensils. The manager was no better seeing as to how he didn't care how we were being treated and the whole experience was just terrible. The food wasn't even good, and tips are included in the bill. Keep your receipts if you pay by credit card!!! I had to dispute through my credit card after looking at my account and realizing this place charged me more than I had signed off on! (not the first time that has happened to me- I've also worked with servers/bartenders who alter patrons credit card receipts by adding more to the tip and changing the total after the patron has signed the slip, therefore teaching me to always keep my receipt and compare my account transactions!). Came here with a family of 4 over the weekend. Not sure how well they are doing with business but it was nearly empty during our visit. The meal was just ok. A bit dry. My husband and I ordered the same thing (mixed tamales). We did not enjoy the lobster tamales. Long story short, when the bill arrived, 20% gratuity was included. For 4 people? Gratuity is typically applied to groups of 6-8. I inquired about this forced charge and was told they add it to bills of $75 or more. I reluctantly paid that forced amount but I didn't agree with it. Ordered a mango margarita it is all ice no patron. The sangria tasted like old watered down wine. The skirt steak clearly was not a cut of skirt meat. The brandy wine that the steak was supposed to be marinated in tasted and looked like can gravy. Black beans came straight from a can, again no flavor, rice was old and bland. The table side guacamole a must! Great salsa too. They had a great section for vegetarians being one myself, all very basic selections but delicious. I am appalled by the service at this place. The first time we went there, we got lucky. The steak/shrimp portion for the fajitas was composed of an abundance of both steak and shrimp large enough for two people. The second time, not so much. After the second bad experience, we decided to give this place another try but it was certainly the final one and they have lost a customer. We specifically asked if the portion would be large enough to share. The waitress didn't speak good english so I switched over to spanish as to not make her uncomfortable. She still called the other waiter and he assured us that the portion was large enough to share and that they would take care of it. When our fajita plate arrived, it contained tiny strips of steak and 3 shrimp. If you get the shrimp fajitas, they are $17.95, if you get the steak they are also $17.95, if you combine the two, they are $20+ HOWEVER, they don't actually combine the amounts, they only give you 3 shrimp vs the 6 in the normal dish and they also give you less steak. It's not an upgrade from chicken, it's the same steak and shrimp so combining them should not create an increase in price. Last but not least, I got a teaspoon worth of guac, a teaspoon worth of guac and a teaspoon of salsa. I asked for more sour cream and they charged me $2 for sour cream. You never gave me enough for a single fajita so why would you charge me for a side? My boyfriend who was already annoyed, asked the waiter to credit the bill as there was not enough sour cream to begin with and the waiter's reaction was to argue with my boyfriend and utter, "Just pay the $2"!" It's the PRINCIPLE, which clearly this place doesn't understand. The entire experience was atrocious and we will never go back there again. I don't write a lot of yelp reviews, but the service I've received from here in the last few months has driven me to write one. I write this review not about having proper dinner here, but in hoping it could be a good after work happy hour place. The margaritas are good, the guacamole is fresh, the food is decent.. it has a lot of positives. A few months ago, we read on their website that says Riviera Maya at 20 Summer St that they have happy hour all night on Mondays and Tuesdays. We casually had one margarita before 8 and tried to order one after 8 and they tried to say it was no longer happy hour and that was not their website. Last week, on one of the first nice days of the year, we decided to go after work for happy hour again, hoping to sit outside.The whole bar area and outside area was empty, as it often is, and they accepted us leaving instead of bending the rules that you "Can't get happy hour if you sit outside." So, we left and went elsewhere. No way would I pay full price for drinks at a place that barely cares whether they have customers or not. read more

Used to love going to this place until management decision-making started affecting my visits to the point where I just don't go anymore. You can find this kind of food anywhere that's a lot cheaper than the consistently rising prices here. Every time I come I feel like this place is really hurting for money. Not to mention the last time I was going to go (6/23/2018), I called before to make sure I got there before they started charging their ridiculous cover charge for entry after 9:45. The woman on the phone said 9:45, I asked several times - I got there at 9:35 and she said they were charging already - sad.
