Wish I could give em 6-STARS! Easily the best local burger value around. I got the BBQ bacon burger. $5.65 First, the bun is no low-rent bun of disappointment. It's all crafty and grilled to this crispy texture that is...remarkable and reminiscent of the 'good ole days'. The meat:veggie ratio was on point and balanced out with a crafty BBQ sauce. Sauce did not wreck the bun. Overall the total burger was a huge and filling success calling back to the 'golden era' of burgers. You know, when $10 bought groceries for a year. But beyond that, the service was chipper, fast and fun. Everyone was having a great time and that cheered me up a bit. I could see that the kitchen was clean and tidy. That's always a good sign. I was there five or six years ago and, have things changed! Indifferent waitstaff that apparently think cleaning the place is someone else's job. Still the same old cramped, greasy, dirty, converted old trailer with a cramped, dirty, greasy addition. No bathroom, and trash everywhere. The "Coney Dog" ( at $4.75!! ) was the cheapest, bad tasting, even bitter, tough, hot dog they could find. A pack of "Ballpark" franks from the Dollar Store tasted better. It was like a fake meat and chicken dog! The "chili" was barely skimmed over the hot dog, mainly juice, and then plopped down on you table without comment. You need a pile of napkins if you try to eat it with your bare hands! When you go back and ask for a knife and fork the gal's eyes rolled and she gave me a plastic fork and spoon. You have to be very careful with the fork because it's so flimsy it'll break. I had to use my pocket knife to cut and eat the thing. My wife had the hamburger and it was marginally O.K. No 15 dollar burger here. For under 10 you can have a hungry man meal of a foot long chilli hot dog fries and a drink. You can't help but be full. It's so good you might not even taste it getting it into your belly. I don't give it the fifth star because I felt there could have been a healthier serving of Chili on the dog. The bun was able to hold more. Personally the measure of a good chilli dog is you have to contemplate do I dare pick this up? Or should I just grab a knife and a fork? We ordered two burgers, one coney island long and two orders of coney fries. They were all so dry they were pretty much inedible. What an exciting find! For 80 years locals have been loving this spot, and for good reason. The hot dogs have a perfect snap and then an almost creamy finish. The Coney style is called Michigan in New England. It's a smooth chili sauce with diced onions and mustard. The burgers are great and I love the fries. I've been eating good Coney dogs for over 30 years and this was not one of them. Also, I love fresh hand cut fries but these were so soggy that I threw them out after eating 1/3 of them. Someone needs to tell the Cook to turn the heat up in the fryer. Cute little place, the staff was friendly enough and I will say the Coney sauce was pretty decent. I had heard a conversation about Roakes on the radio not to long ago and the caller raved about the chili dogs. More so than that, she raved about the burgers - claiming they were the best in town and rivaled In-N-Out. That piqued my curiosity enough to drag my family here today. Unfortunately, the Coneydog underwhelmed me. It was like a long Oscar Meyer wiener in a Franz bread hot dog bun with chili that had been puréed. Not that it tasted bad or anything, but I could easily do this one at home. The fries were like any other; greasy. They also serve that generic ketchup that is too sweet for my pallet. However; Roake's redeemed themselves because the burgers my mom and dad ordered looked fantastic and they verified that they tasted great! They were plump and looked homemade. My problem is that they are known for their hot dogs and that wasn't what was great. If I wanted my chili thrown in a blender, I'd ask, but to me that was weird. It was like 7-11 nacho "chili" and was extra messy because it was so thin. Anyway, 2 of the 3 of us really enjoyed our meals. My husband and I are not big beef lovers but wanted a small regular sized hamburger and when we went to pick up the order they were humongous! It's rather sad that after coming here for close to 30 years that the new generation of employees have become so rude. I asked the girl at the counter what order she had called and she snapped back "not yours". Then after that, the same girl proceeded to loudly complain about the amount of customers and how they "just won't give up"....they still had an hour to close and this is a food establishment and purple are hungry. One of the best burgers I've had in a while. I'd been hungry for a burger and sometime fast food will handle that craving, but kinda makes you feel blah afterwards. Plus, Roake's is local, it looks like its been there a long time, and its doing healthy business. I had the Super Roake's Favorite, which is a burger inn a half French roll with this sauce called Conney Island Sauce, I liked it - sort of a mustard, ketchup, bbq sauce, hard to describe. Fries are shoe string and they have Conney Island fries which have tomatoes and cheese on them. Ignorance is bliss and I wish I would have sat in my car or stayed there and ate my fries while they were still warm rather than dumping them out in the to-go bag so the grease would be absorbed, but no I went home and they were coldish and I was full from the burger I just scarfed. They have car service if your head lights are on, but apparently they don't have enough people for them to do that right now. Watch out where you park in the lot, you can get boxed in. If waistline and cholesterol levels are of no concern to you, this is your place. I've been coming here since the '60's, it's been here since the early 1900's. It used to be you had your choice of two hot dogs, with sauce or without, chips and soft drinks, that was it. Roake bought it in the late '70's or early 80's and added the burgers, shakes, fries and all that. What remains and what is special is the sauce, ah yes the sauce. On a Hot dog it is special, on the burger it is heaven, on the fries with tomatoes and onions is, well, you'll just have to try it. read more

It's been years since l've been to Roake's. Tonight l wanted a non-chain restaurant. I had a long coney with onions, a small chocolate shake and fries. I hate lukewarm restaurant food. Their food is very hot here! The shake was great, the fries are cut skin on, on the thinner side, kind of limp, but pure deliciousness. I enjoyed my Coney dog so much that l ordered a second. Killin the coney, I've been eating Roake's since i was 10. No kiding I'm now 51 and still enjoy a coney....simply amazing. I even worked at a few Roake's reasturants, they were all family owned, accept for ol galleria. But the ol 82nd restaurant was the best, may she rest in peace. They also have Coney fries that are absolutely delicious with fresh potatoes not frozen. Burgers are pretty darn good too and real ice cream shakes. Excellent hamburgers and French fries. I am only giving four stars because they got my order wrong the last three times I have eaten here. They put thousand island (or some similar sauce) on the burgers and I don't really care for it. I ask for mayo instead but still wind up getting the special sauce. We ordered takeout for 4 people. The burgers were tough and unseasoned (NOT a fan of their sandwich spread); not great, not good. Fries were greasy with very little salt (soaked through the bag as soon as it hit the counter; had to crisp in a pan at home before eating). Chili dog was ok. The staff does not wear gloves during food prep, nor do they keep hair completely pulled up and covered.
