We had a hankering for BBQ and we found this place. It's very small and has seating inside and outside. Very friendly employees, The meat quality was very good. The amount of meat on the BBQ sandwich was more than ample. Flavor was a bit different than I am accustomed to, but it was tasty. We asked for the leaner version, (less fat) so the cost was a bit higher, and we had slaw/potato salad as a side instead of chips so that drove the price up a bit as well. Add, two soft drinks and a desert and the price hit $40.00 for two people. All said, it was a bit pricier than most for BBQ sandwiches, so be prepared, go cheap or go deep! Hours are spotty as they close when they run out of meat, so maybe go well before closing time or call ahead to make sure they have the meat you are looking for. Roaming Buffalo is a small town, line out the door type BBQ joint that can be found in many towns peppered across the USofA's vast frontier. It has everything you need to satisfy your big appetite. Meat plates, sandwiches, sides, and more meat, but by the pound. However, there are influences in the food that were new to me, like the coffee water added to the BBQ beans and the caramel peanut, popcorn cheesy poofs (minus the cheese). The lamb shoulder is so good, it will make a grown man want to go Mutton-bustin! These influences appear to come from the restaurant's theme, Colorado BBQ, which can be described by some as Cowboy BBQ. Thus the lamb shank and bison rib options seem to be at home on the range. However, the star of the show is the beef brisket. Smoked to perfection with a wood blend...I tasted pecan. The charred edge had been reduced to an almost candied state...yummy! Add on the Boylan Soda Fountain, and a few homemade desert options like brownies and rice crispy treats, and you have yourself enough ways to expand the waistline that it makes deciding what to eat impossible. As I was scarfing down my half of our 3 meat plate, (Brisket, Lamb Shoulder, Jalapeno Sausage, Slaw, Beans, and a piece of jalapeno cornbread)...total tab was $26 bucks for two, which was an excellent value. We even needed a to-go box. I digress, as I was scarfing down my half of the meal, I kept thinking about those Subway commercials where people's shirt buttons blast off and chair legs explode under the weight of their expanding waistlines. The meat is freshly sliced of course and you can choose from chicken, brisket, lamb shoulder, ribs and the like. The sides are also fabulous - a corn/jalapeno muffin comes with it if you get the plate; but also select from cowboy beans, mac & cheese, cole slaw. All the sides are unreal - such flavor! I used to say there's no decent bbq in Denver. I can't say that anymore, in fact I can now say Denver has GREAT bbq thanks to Roaming Buffalo. I've tried the ribs, brisket, pork and I will continue to eat my way through their menu because as far as I can tell they can do no wrong when it comes to meat. Someone there must have a PhD in meat preparation because the smokey, savory, and rich flavors are the stuff of famous bbq joint legend! 3.5 Stars... I have been in desperate search of exceptional BBQ in Denver. This place gets 5 stars for BBQ in Denver but 3.5 for BBQ overall. I grew up on Smitty's, Kreuz, Coopers, and all the BBQ joints you'll find in small town Texas and while this place came close... it wasn't quite there. Brisket - We got half from the point and half from the flat. The bark was fine but lacking. I almost felt like too much of the fat had been trimmed off so you didn't get a strong bark. It was a smidge tough and a bit too dry (even the cuts from the point). Sausage - I actually found the sausage to be pretty good! I just wanted more seasoning. Ribs - Solid Pulled Lam/Bison Short Rib - I love what they are doing with these but both were just not moist enough. My only other knock on this place is the use of pellet cookers. Pellet cookers are great. Those little pellets get almost complete combustion. However, every pellet cooked piece of meat I have tasted doesn't have quite the depth of smoke flavor as cooking with wood (sticks). This is a contentious debate so I will just drop it. For me, my preference is for the classics and I think that this not only adds to the flavor but also ambiance and feel for a place. read more

I have been dying to try this place out but its so damn good that by the time I get off work and drive by the Sold Out sign is always on. They moved into the neighborhood not too long ago and after seeing their score on yelp I was determined. It was a few weeks in the making and finally I got lucky. I got off work early and caught the guys just as they were getting down to the last couple of plates. My choices were limited but they had the good stuff that I was looking for anyway, Ribs and Brisket! They loaded me up good since they were down to the end and walked out with a nice haul. These guys now what they are doing and the smokey bark on the ribs ad brisket was something else. I forgot to get sauces so I really got to enjoy and taste the meat. I bet the sauces are something else. I also forgot tottery the Banana Pudding but will make sure not to get too distracted with excitement next go around. Top Notch would be and understatement. my friends and i only had a couple of days in denver and had to fit quite a bit of food in for 48hours. we were still full from our breakfast earlier in the morning but decided we had to try this place before we left. we ended up sharing a 3 meat plate between the 5 of us and we were so upset that we had breakfast that morning because we would have eaten a lot more bbq if we could. we got the pork ribs, bison ribs & brisket - all delicious. the coleslaw was surprisingly refreshing too. skip the collard greens, they weren't cooked as long as we prefer them to be, and not much seasoning. but the strawberry jalapeno jam is a MUST! read more

Fantastic lamb and bison rubs for lunch. The sweet sauce was tangy and about perfect. The line cilantro Coke slaw was the best slaw I've ever had. The corn bread topped with strawberry jalapeño jelly was a great compliment. Finished it off with a to die for banana pudding. The staff was great and the food fantastic. So this review is for 2 visits, because within a week we had to go twice so we could try all the meats. There are definitely some favorites. At the top of the list is the brisket. Both visits the meat was moist and on the second visit it was so tender that it melted in your mouth. I will always have the brisket as it is the best I have ever had. Note, that I get the fatty side, because fat is yummmy and adds flavor. The second is the pulled pork. Moist with some of bark. Neither of these needed sauce as they standard on their own. The bison ribs were hit and miss on the same plate. One was dry and tough and the other was moist and tender. The bark on both was really good. The pork ribs were a different rub, which was nice, but these were hit and miss as well. The chicken wings were good and not your typical wings, worth a try. The sides so far have been all good and have a southwestern flavor which is not overpowering. The potato salad, coleslaw, and Grandma's tomato and cucumber salad are worth having more than one. Finally, the banana pudding. As a southerner, you are required by law to eat as much banana pudding as possible, most of it not that great. That is not the case here. This is the best banana pudding I have ever had. You can tell it is made from scratch just by the flavor. I will be getting this every time I make a visit. The last thing to know is that they cook a certain amount of meat every day and then that is it. They can run out quick if they get busy. Try to go early or there are less options. read more

Just ate at Roaming Buffalo today. BBQ is a treat for me, not because I'm on some sad diet, but because being a Denver native, I know Denver has always been not quite able to pull it off. After reading the great reviews and write-up in Westword, I thought my prayers had been answered. Customer service was awesome! Bar far the best of any BBQ place and even a lot of restaurants in a higher price category. Pricing was inline with what I would expect. Portions were inline with the pricing. The food wasn't bad, but as everyone in our group said, "I've had better". Two of us ordered the chopped pork, myself on a sandwich (the bun was like a light wheat bun so it provided for some texture as opposed to just a Wonderbread bun) the pork for both of us was pretty bland. No smoke or rub flavor. We both added a ton of sauce which tends to be a sign of bland or dry meat. The meat was on the very lean side almost to a fault. I'm not looking for chunks of fat, but I am looking for some melted fat that has made the meat succulent. Third person got the special for $3. There is a reason it's $3. Approach with cautions as it's a sandwich of all the leftovers and not in a good way. Honestly, selling this at any price is just bad business. Two house sauces which was an original (sweet) and a spicy. The sweet was pretty thin and not thick as expected. Flavors were similar and neither were on the vinegary side which may be good or bad depending on your preferences. Tried the house made smoked poblano mac & cheese and it was pretty tasty. Not too much of a poblabo flavor, but the sauce and noodles were cooked well and did not taste like Velveta. Again,super friendly customer service all around. But, food was lackluster. Good Bbq is hard to find in CO, when your born and raised in Texas! They were out of a lot of meats when we got there, but it was opening day Denver Broncos game. Staff was friendly and suggested to call early and they will set aside meats. We ended up getting sliced brisket, cowboy beans and southwest potatoes salad. Decided to write this review today when I heard that Arnold Palmer had passed, because the AP that I had here last weekend was literally the most refreshing and delicious beverage I have ever had. (Besides alcohol, I am usually strictly a water or diet coke girl.) I think it was the combination of their house-made agave lemonade and crushed ice - to die for. Anyhoo, on to the food. I heard about this place after seeing a stupid Westword article on Facebook entitled "No Good BBQ in Denver" or something like that. I was intrigued so I began reading some of the comments, and 95% of them mentioned how awesome Roaming Buffalo was/is. I had to go. I had the two-meat plate with chopped brisket (some lean and some fatty) and the lamb shoulder - both were luscious. My boyfriend had the sliced brisket and the pork ribs. He said that the ribs were some of the best he's ever had. Super meaty and tender on inside, and had a nice crispy spice rub on the outside. Their homemade sauces were awesome - sweet, tangy, and runny. I preferred the spicy version. I would go back (tonight for dinner, if we're being honest) just for the meat (and their perfect sauces) but I haven't talked about the sides yet. Absolutely do not skip the smoked sweet potato with pecan butter. Yes, I know there are gems like smoked poblano mac and cheese, and cilantro cole slaw on the menu (you should try those too...we did), get the sweet potato. It is cooked so well and the pecan butter puts it over the top. Lastly, get a bag of their freshly fried potato chips to snack on while you're waiting for your food. We thought we tried the white cheddar / green chile ones, but I think they might have just been regular? Not too sad about this though, homemade chips are always delicious, amiright? The strawberry jalapeno jam on the table was a nice addition to the cornbread muffins that come with each plate - I felt like it staved off my sweet tooth for the time being. Best BBQ in Denver. We just ate here for the first time for lunch today. My wife had their bbq sandwich special which was a variety of chopped meats and I believe was $3 which was a crazy good deal. I had the two meat platter where I tried the Colorado Lamb Shoulder and Bison Short Ribs. I tried these because they were unique to the location and while I am sure their brisket and pulled pork are good, I can eat that anywhere. The lamb was smoked to perfection and not really gamey. The short rib was a lot like beef short ribs but I had never had short ribs smoked before, only braised. Some other standouts were their sweet poblano mac and cheese, the banana pudding, and their new ice cream sandwhiches that consisted of two snickerdoodle cookies and smoked peach ice cream. Let me start with the mac and cheese: YUM! I think if they offered and entree that had this mac and cheese with chunks of brisket, I would pay $12 for it and eat it all the time. Loved the pudding and ice cream sandwiches, I think 2 people could easily spilt any of these as the portions were big. The people there are nice. The workers seemed enthusiastic about the food there and one of the owners, Rachel, talked with us about the food, gave us refils on our drinks and was very personable and friendly with the customers in the front of the house. We do not venture to the south part of town often but am glad we finally tried this place! My recommendation is to go early as you can as they do sell out. read more

If you've fallen for Texas BBQ and consequently had your life turn to shambles upon leaving Texas, Roaming Buffalo is the road to recovery. Try the bison ribs, because being in Colorado has delicious, gamey perks. The sides are forgettable, but you'd only have white bread with pickles and onions in TX, so consider that a novel accessory. Get there early, because the Buffalo (and everything else) will unapologetically roam off within a couple hours of opening. This completely unassuming little hole in the wall serves up some delectable barbecue fair! While in Denver for work, I came across them here on Yelp, and figured I would give it a try. I drove past it by accident the first time, and had to make a U-turn to go back. That U-turn was absolutely worth it! I tried a 2 meat platter that turned into a 3 meat platter... they did not have enough bison green chile cheddar sausage to complete my order, so they added 2 pork ribs to it just for fun. EVERY part of it was delicious! From the brisket to the boat is on saUsage to the fall-off-the-bone pork ribs... the meats were well smoked and delectable! The bison sausage was a bit out of my usual, and I regret nothing! It had a great texture and delicious flavor. I went with a side of sweet potato with pecan butter, and I'm pretty sure I could havve eaten that butter by the spoonful. Jalapeño jam for the cornbread was very good. Cons: Brisket was so dry and tasteless I had to dump sauce on it (I got half fatty/half lean brisket, chopped). Bison sausage was decent but nothing to write home about, tasted like a typical sausage. The poblano mac and cheese was Ok, but lacked much unique/substantial flavor. They provided delicious food for both the rehearsal dinner on Friday and the wedding reception on Saturday. The rehearsal dinner menu was scrumptious home-cooking ensuring our 80 guests were well fed and ready to meet their new family members. They served the favorite dishes of the bride and groom, BBQ sammies, mac and cheese and an ice cream sundae bar! The wedding menu included a variety of truly Colorado dishes, with bison tri-tip and lemon honey pepper smoked trout. The appetizers really stood out and our favorite was the Bison Green Chili Sausage in a pastry wrap. The entire meal was delightful and presented so beautifully.
