I'm eating an order I received from Amberjack. The tempura was done to perfection (crisp) and the large amount of very fresh fish in their sushi rolls prompted me to stop eating so I could leave a review...only to find I've already left one. Haha! I can never get over how every single one of their ingredients tastes so fresh. I can even taste the scallions in my roll, which are still crisp. Even the umeboshi paste somehow tastes fresh. Like I've said before, it costs me slightly more to order from Amberjack but I always receive twice as much fish per roll, and I am never disappointed. read more

This place is odd. You walk in and immediately stumble upon an office set up - literally a desk with someone doing paperwork. I was super confused, thought it was a sushi bar... There is someone behind the counter but all feels like you are disturbing whatever they are doing. I left and have no idea what it is. It's not normal. read more

In our humble opinion, we have high expectations for sushi and this met them. All of our fish was incredibly fresh and prepared to perfection. I especially enjoyed the tai nigiri! Reviewers decrying the lack of authenticity in ethnic food options must be new to Marin County. This is a solid 4 star sushi option for this area, regardless of being owned by a Chinese couple. Parking and seating are limited. + Fish is fresh and generous. The "spicy" roll options (spicy tuna, spicy yellowtail, etc.) use chunks of fish instead of a paste as many other places do. This should be enough to warrant a visit. + Rice is the right balance of sticky enough not to crumble, but dry enough to feel the texture of each grain. Surprisingly hard to find a sushi place with good rice. + Agedashi tofu is fried perfectly and served with a tall heap of bonito. Sauce is thicker and sweeter than I like, but would still order again. + The coldest beer I've had possibly ever. read more

My adoration of this tiny, casual place with only 6 little tables and 6 seats at the sushi bar continues. Why? For starters, how about "Hamachi Kama Shioyaki" ($8), a grilled and salted yellowtail collar served with a tangy dipping sauce that had J and I clawing vulture-like through the bones, searching for every last hamachi scrap? There's so much edible fish hidden amongst this "neck" portion; I order this anytime I see it on a menu. On past visits we've ordered solely from the sushi menu and the specials board. This night we pioneered into the "dinner" section of the menu, opting for "Nigiri Sushi Deluxe" ($16). For that, you get a California roll + 8 pieces of chef's choice nigiri + miso soup. It was quite a value, filling and tasty, but I missed being able to order the more exotic things (e.g. uni, Spanish mackerel) which the chef wasn't doling out for this dinner. The biggest compliment I could pay here sort of speaks for itself: I'm a repeat customer who intends to continue repeating. I will be back. read more

This is my go to place for lunch when I need a sushi fix. My favorite place is only opened for dinner :( I have eaten here for over 3 years, and for right now, I can give it 3 1/2 stars. It has a limited fresh fish menu, but what they have is fresh. The only thing I do not care too much for is the way they present their sashimi. It is in cube style. I like mine a little thinner, like nirgiri cut. Their rolls are great, especially their special one, and I love their scallop mix. Michelle and her husband run it, and they are two very dedicated and nice people. True, the place is tiny and the tables very close together. I bring a book to help block out the conversations on each side of me. Some times it helps, sometimes it doesn't! Their prices are reasonable, the service great and the quality of fish good. read more

First things first: order take out and don't dine in. My mom and I came here to eat dinner one night. Usually, I'm very easy to please when it comes to Japanese food, but we had sort of a mixed experience. Everyone had raved about this place, so we were pretty excited to try it out. We walked in and first noticed that the place is quite small with only a few tables and some counter space. There was, fortunately, seating at the bar for us, so we sat down and eagerly reviewed the menus. We ordered and as we were waiting, we couldn't help noticing some things because of our place right next to the kitchen. Both my mom and I have a ton of restaurant experience between us, so right away, we noticed that most of the restaurant's focus was on to go orders. This makes sense, because when you have only a handful of seats, you have to make your money somehow. The problem is that Amberjack was short a person. They had the sushi chef, a woman on the line, and one girl trying to wait tables and to deal with the endless to go orders. The result is that we watched the restaurant patrons suffer a bit due to this near-total focus on to go orders. This confounds me because a) the dine-in patrons were there first and should take precedence over the phone, and b) if the phone rings and you need to run food, attend to tables, or whatever needs doing in the restaurant immediately, put the call on hold. Twice, I saw hot food just sitting on the counter, waiting to go out. Past managers would scream! The food sat there for at least five minutes (actual time, not 'customer time').. I kept waiting for it to be picked up and run, but it sat there for a long time. The first time, it was a plate of tempura and I assumed that it was an order that was wrong that'd been set aside, because in all of my years of working in a restaurant, I have never seen hot food allowed to just sit on the counter like that, left to die. The second time, it was our food.. the waitress was totally stuck on the phone with a difficult order. :/ I thought my food was good, but my mom wasn't satisfied with hers. I think the lack of service bothered her and probably colored her experience. My conclusion is that I probably wouldn't dine in again, but it would make decent take out. read more

This is a teeny tiny place with great sushi. I love the chef and the usual waitress - they're very friendly and attentive. Nice sake selection and surprisingly large menu for such a small place. While I'm definitely a raw fish girl, if you have a dinner or lunch date who doesn't do sushi (who are those crazy people) there are plenty of choices for them, too. I'm not wowwed by the heavy garlic in the Ahi Poke and while my boyfriend loves the beef asparagus maki I'm less impressed. But the nigiri is FABULOUS. The hamachi and the hotate are foodgasmic. I've never once had a visit where the fish wasn't deliciously fresh and the rice perfectly cooked. I know this place is connected with Amberjack in SF and with a couple other high quality sushi restaurants. I'm hoping Amberjack in Mill Valley has continued success and becomes a neighborhood institution. EDITED 12/17/13: After eating here at least once a month for years, I feel like it's unfair not to note that while the poke is not my favorite, it IS my boyfriend's favorite. We order poke everywhere we can find it on the menu. So we've got a pretty good sample size. I'd also add that I'm grateful that it looks like I got my wish - and that Amberjack's become a neighborhood favorite. Excellent food, hard-working and wonderful people. Review is for Sunday, August 16th. Three stars for food, two for service. I arrived with a couple of family friends around 7:30 on Sunday evening. The place is small, with only a few tables, and it was completely empty of patrons. The waitress was extremely bored and it showed on her face. She was not friendly at all, didn't smile once, and neither did the sushi chef. When I asked her opinion of the sashimi regular versus the chirashi, all she said was "they're pretty much the same, only the rice different." Gee, that was helpful. We also inquired as to the origin of the name of the restaurant, and couldn't understand her reply. Maybe she didn't really know. My sashimi was what you would imagine: some pieces of raw fish with a bowl of miso and a small bowl of rice, for $16. My "grandma", if you will, seemed to enjoy her tekka don though and my friend Angela's $11 nebayaki udon looked pretty tasty. It was just too hot outside to be eating hot soup, in my opinion. I would not say this place has anything spectacular, but Samurai sushi was closed and we wanted Japanese food in little Mill Valley. At least it was nice and quiet, I can say that much. Maybe when it gets colder I'll try the udon but I don't have much desire to come back. read more

My go to for Japanese in Marin. The agedashi tofu is the best I've had at any restaurant (I've tried it at a lot of places!) and the service is always fast. The people who work there are always attentive and kind. Robin Williams used to always go here, he loved this place! I saw him there a couple times. Anyways, if you go, the gomaee! I got to admit, I was pleasantly surprised by my Amberjack sushi dinner. The place is literally a hole in the wall near downtown Mill Valley. So if you're expecting an elegant Sushi Ran-type experience, then you should probably go to Sushi Ran. Personally, I really dug the low-key charm of this restaurant. Nothing pretentious here. Just good sushi in a friendly neighborhood setting, and at reasonable prices. My dining companion and I ordered the Cherry Blossom roll (made with tuna, yellowtail, cucumber, avocado & kaiware) and a Spicy Tuna Roll. And then we split the Fried Spring Roll appetizer special-of-the-day. Everything was lip-smacking good. Service was on-point without being obsequious. Neither of us were drinking, but our hard working servers kept our water glasses full throughout the meal. The entire dinner for 2 only set me back $30! I couldn't believe it. I would totally come back to Amberjack to satiate my sushi cravings. read more

Not very impressed. I came for lunch and was the only one sitting in the small restaurant. I ordered a bento box. The miso soup was too salty, the salad dressing wasn't good..the only part of my meal that I enjoyed was the sashimi, definitely not the best I've had but it was OK. Nice small family run place. That's the good news. Whatever you do not order tempura in any form at Amberjack. This is likely the only Japanese restaurant in America or Japan that doesn't deep fry their tempura. The cook the item, dip it in the lukewarm tempura-like batter and immediately serve it on rice. Ugh. Not good. I like to give my patronage to family owed businesses but I recommend diners take a pass on Amberjack. read more

this has become my latest fave place to go on those nights when I. Must. Have. Raw. Fish. and fish-fearing husband be cast aside. the salmon is consistently like buttah, the portions generous. the uni has been fresh, the couple of times I've had it. the cooked items also not bad -- agedashi tofu in particular, unfortunately the hamachi kama was pretty dry the one time I had it. the space itself is itty bitty. I usually take out, because having people from the sidewalk peer at my plate is a pet peeve. but service is adorable, the sake choices fairly numerous, and food is CHEAP. read more

I work right across the street and often order lunch from here. I call in my order & take it to go. You know customer service is awesome when they recognize your voice over the phone & remember your name. They have special lunch combos avail. I usually get the beef terriyaki with sashimi. It comes with rice, salad, & miso soup all for only $8.50. The portion is just right for me- not too hefty, not too light. I've also ordered sushi too which is good & fresh. They use real crab in the California rolls which is a plus. I dined-in once at the sushi bar & remember everything being delicious. read more

This place has been our neighborhood weekly go-to for years. And it's consistently good - incredibly fresh fish (oh, butterfish!), generous portions, fantastic, personal service (they always remember us), great variety and really really good prices. The rolls are not always built to withstand much (i.e. sometimes they fall apart), but I can handle that. We never hold back and we (2 people) can usually get out of there for under $50. It's not Sushi Ran, but who needs Sushi Ran once a week? Go here. You'll like it, I promise. read more

Amberjack Sushi- located in Downtown Mill Valley, is a quaint and small sushi restaurant that I have always passed by. I decided to finally try it out with my sister. We walk inside, and the place is actually pretty packed. There is very limited seating, and we were lucky to be seated the last table. The place is so tiny, you are pretty much sharing a table with the people on either side of you... We took a look at the menu. Nothing really popped out to me so I ordered the Sashimi platter with some steamed rice. My sister ordered the Sake Bowl (raw salmon with steamed rice). The food came very quickly despite the packed restaurant. Then again, our food WAS raw. I looked down at my Sashimi and could immediately tell it was not that fresh or A grade quality. It looked dry & a few hours old. Safeway quality. I proceeded to eat anyway. Just as I expected, Safeway quality. I was not impressed only because this is after all a RESTAURANT in DOWNTOWN MILL VALLEY. I was expecting much better. I tried some of my sisters dinner & it was a little better then what I ordered. Still not as good as it could be. I was disappointed. Service was no problem. Friendly & average speed. Clean tables and seats. They also have nice hot tea they give you. Amberjack could however do a lot better, especially for where they are situated. Solid 3 stars. I think if I want Japanese in Mill Valley I'll stick to Robata. read more

Not a Japanese restaurant. It is totally something else. When they are too cheap not to provide regular condiments like graded daikon radish for tempura, or mustard and tar tar sauce for fries... They shouldn't call themselves a Japanese restaurant. Plus, the quality of the food was very doubtful. Super skinny ebi fries and totally not fresh kaki fries... You could probably trick regular white Americans but is it really ok to get away with that kind of business practice? If they want to call themselves a Japanese restaurant, they really need to work harder to get to the starting point... For now, they don't even fulfill necessary qualifier.
