Came for a quick lunch. In the restaurant, one table and one person at the sushi bar. I stood at the front waiting to be greeted/seated for 5 minutes but ok. Server sat me and told me what beers they had on draft but then brought me a bottled beer but ok. Ordered the lunch special SUSHI A - California roll, 5 pieces nigiri. The fish was not fresh, looked and was dry. The rice tasted off. After my third piece, I started to feel nervous about the freshness and quality. California roll had been made days before as it too was dry and slightly tough, tasted off. After the second piece, I realized that the roll had a off-putting sour taste and the third piece I spit out into my napkin. Clearly, the mayo they mix the imitation crab with had spoiled and was uneatable. The entire time no one ever came to check on me or asked if I needed anything. They weren't busy. The meal was so disappointing, gross and a total waste of money. I left hungry but felt sickened at the same time. Total rip off, they couldn't care less about anything. Don't go here. read more

This is hands down my favorite sushi restaurant in Marin. The fish is always fresh and the sushi is inventive. I highly recommend the tuna takki on their specials menu. The ponzo sauce is killer and the fresh slices of albacore just melts in the pallet. This beats Sushi Ran hands down. The prices are lower, the fish fresher, and the variety of food selections surpasses any sushi lovers expectations. If your here for the food and not the trend then Robata is your place. read more

This place is great for lunch specials but I love their Chirashi Sushi when you can't decide what sushi to order and you know you want more than the 5 piece Moriawase. Chirashi has a little bit of everything over sushi rice. If you haven't tried it yet ~this is a great place to do so since this is a little bit larger portion to try that even if you didn't like something there is enough to be fulfilled for lunch or dinner. Rediscovered Robata. Just had one of the best lunches in Marin at the best price. Excellent service. And for two of us it was a joy. This little restaurant is a gem. It's not on the beaten track for sure. And it's rather curious because you can't tell from the outside that on the inside, it's quite charming...little booths for your private party of 2 to 4. The Bento boxes are delicious and served with salad and miso soup. My companion had grilled chicken and I had teriyaki salmon and it was melt in your mouth delicious. It also comes with fresh vegetable and sushi, of course, as well as rice and is beautifully presented. I was impressed obviously. For about $20 a person you're going to walk out with a very good experience. and we also had a fresh Hamachi roll with crispy tempura on top. My lunch companion said it was one of the best he has ever had. I would agree. So I recommend it. And I'm very particular about my Japanese food. The service was smiley and fun. Rounding out my stay in Mill Valley was dinner at Robata. Easy walk from the hotel we were at. 2 of us walked in and sat at the bar. Another place where it seemed like lots of locals, staff greeting people by name and having friendly conversations. Shared the marin roll and each had noodles. The broth for the udon was delicious. Great Japanese restaurant right off 101 in Mill Valley. Very easy. Large menu, this place has been here forever & still is busy, including a large group of Japanese business men! The food is always good & consistent through the many years they have been here. In fact this lunch was better than I remember from the past. We each had a 'box' of various selections. Mine was spicy hamachi roll with/teriyaki salmon. The salmon although farmed, was very fresh. My friend had the special 'box of the day, Ca roll, (for $1.50 more go for real crab) & 2 pieces deep fried cod. Cod was good, the fryer needs the oil changed. A small thing but it can ruin a perfect piece of fish. Miso soup, salad w/that same dressing used in nearly every Japanese restaurant, & rice, of course. We had our first opportunity -- in a very long time -- to visit the Robata last weekend, and found their re-opening to be Absolutely Delicious!! Fresh and beautiful Japanese cuisine, knowledgeable and attentive service. It is great to see them open again, with the spectacular team up front and at the grill, and sushi bar. Don't order sashimi or Sushi that is uncooked. The grade of the fish is mediocre. Sushi Chef should never put out mediocre fish to their customers. They should have the balls to say "no our fish is not good to eat raw." I ordered salmon sashimi. It was $21 for 8 sashimi, Miso soup, cup of rice. Terrible. Order their teriyaki, or any cooked dish. And you'll most likely like it. And give it a 4+ stars. This restaurant need to re-think their menu. Less is more. Eliminate any sashimi type of food, focus on rolls, grill, cooked food. If there is any fresh fish, that should be the special of the day. Don't lie to your customers on the quality of your fish. read more

I went to Robata for sushi yesterday and was surprised how dreary it looks inside. It's hard to criticize any place during Covid but I was surprised how disappointing the entire experience was. The staff is upbeat and pleasant but the sushi itself was blah. The sushi rice was off and I mean...really off. like not made properly. It had such a weird taste and was too soft and mushy. I ordered my favorite, UNI which was overshadowed by that rice. Also there was a sloppiness about the presentation. I ordered a tekka maki and all of the pieces were cut at a different height and the nori didn't connect on all the pieces so they fell apart trying to eat. Same with the Uni. The nori didn't connect and was wrapped so loosely my first bite dribbled down the front of me. Oddly the Uni looked nice and I should have eaten that without the rice. The best thing about sushi is the precision and elegant presentation but that was missing. I ordered Unagi which was so sad looking and barely had the thick sweet sauce on it and no sesame seeds. The eel was dry and looked and seemed old. I had to ask for sesame seeds sprinkled on top. Didn't help at all. I also ordered tea I never received. What happened to this place? The food seemed old and not fresh. I also had Agadashi Tofu which was fried in oil that was old which was all I could taste. What a disappointment. I live in the city so lucky me, there are many choices here. Sorry Robata, you need to make some changes. People notice the details. read more

There are few things that make me as happy as sushi does, and Robata does do it well. It's super tempting to compare this place to Sushi Ran but I don't know if it's fair to compare a Michelin star restaurant and one of the best sushi places in Marin to /any/ restaurant. No, I don't think you're going to have as an inventive or as a decadent as Sushi Ran as you would here despite both places having a very similar price point. However, the service and staff at Robata are incredibly good-- My first time at Robata was this past spring when I had to live in the hotel next door for a couple of days while moving from up north. Not only were they completely okay with throwing together an order for me at the last minute, but when I went to go pick up my food I saw them lending a glass cup to someone else who had ordered takeout and was eating in the parking lot and just told her to leave it at the front door after she was done (as it was after closing time) and they'd collect it in the morning This isn't the kind of care I'd expect a tired waitstaff who's trying to close down for the night. The staff member really didn't need to do it (goodness knows I've heard how annoyed my grandfather got whenever people took his glass cups at his restaurant), so this was an exceptional act of kindness that I got to see, especially given how whacky the times are. So if you chose to dine at Robata, know that you'll be taken care of and taken care of well. (And yes, the sushi here is pretty darn good, and I'm about as snobby as you can get with this stuff) read more

Tonight was our second time ordering take out at Robata during shelter in place. They answered the phone quickly and took our order and it was ready in 25 minutes when we arrived. For starters we ordered sunomono salad and miso soup. The miso was fresh and tasty. We absolutely love their nigiri and ordered: tuna, sake, yellow tail. For their roles we ordered spicy tuna, negihama, and shrimp tempura. Everything was very good and served on a super convenient platter for eating at the table. We were very impressed at the quality of their fish, it's freshness, and the sushi rice is so good. We definitely recommend for dinner and will be back. read more

Really disappointed!!! We've been looking forward to trying Robata Grill for a long time. We both love Japanese food and we love grilled food so we were really looking forward to dinner here. We ordered the Lamb Battayaki (sautéed lamb chops served with grilled broccoli) along with sushi: a 49er roll, Negi Hamachi, and Sake Kawa. The lamb chops were so chewy and tough that it was very challenging to eat them (in fact, we had to spit some of it out). We've had lamb chops at a Japanese restaurant in San Francisco where the meat is so tender and juicy it melts in your mouth. Given the price of the lamb chops at Robata we were expecting a dish of a similar caliber. We were extremely disappointed. And to top it off, the broccoli wasn't grilled. I LOVE grilled vegetables and there wasn't the slightest hint the broccoli had even been in the vicinity of a grill. It appeared to be blanched - we really couldn't tell - but however it was cooked, it wasn't cooked enough. It was almost raw and we didn't eat it. We were hoping that the sushi would make up for the disappointing lamb & broccoli but, sadly, the sushi was fair, at best (that's my buddy talking, I'd say it was passable, at best.) The salmon pieces on the 49er roll were very small and didn't have much flavor and neither did the tobiko. The lemon slices overpowered the other flavors in the roll so much, we removed them. Unlike similar rolls we've had elsewhere where the combination of all the flavors is a delicious ensemble, the combination of the flavors on this roll was underwhelming. The Negi Hamachi and Sake Kawa were passable, but we didn't like them as much as other places. The yellowtail in the Negi Hamachi was a little mushy and it didn't taste fresh. The people were really nice, and I wish the food warranted a positive review (I've written some glowing ones and I'm not shy about praise). Hopefully they'll improve things. : ( read more

This place is home to us and holds a special place in our heart. My family has been coming here since my son was just a baby, and it's where my wife and I had one of our first dates. The food is delicious, always fresh and consistently fulfilling. Most of all, it's Boi (love this guy) and his delightful staff that makes this place even more magical. Despite asking both the host & the server neither of them thought it courteous to advise me that the only lunch special was the one in the plastic sleeve by the front door. Needless to say my lunch ran in at $20. Not a big problem just kind of crap that my first experience at robata grill will be my last as the server was rude & obnoxious on my enquiry re the special menu & offered no apology for the misunderstanding or explanation on his behalf. I was shocked at how expensive it was especially for the quality or rather the lack of quality. The tempura was soggy and the price for the tapioca dessert compared to the amount in the dish was ridiculous. I also felt incredibly rushed to order and throughout the entire meal. I hadn't even finished eating when they started to clear the table. I went to Sushi Ran yesterday and the difference in service, food and price was huge. I would expect the first two but not the last one. I agree with all the other reviews about price, service and quality so I won't go on even though I have plenty more to say. read more

Pretty good. I got the chicken udon. The chicken was ok, but the broth was a bit lacking in comparison to how it was a year ago. Noodles were average. Customer service was excellent. Nice atmosphere, good furniture. Did not receive a hand towel like all previous times going there. Was around my expectations. read more

9/14/14 **Disclaimer I know now that sukiyaki means soup but let's face it I'm not Japanese and we aren't in Japan so for us Americans that don't have knowledge of all Japanese words please someone explain in the menu description area*** thank you. End rant. I should never say never again! I'm taking a star away. So tonight we went to Marin for a family members birthday expecting great service and amazing food. My dinner was great. Great black cod, crunchy hamachi.. The birthday boy no no and no. Service no. Management no. Here's the scoop, the birthday boy wanted to try something new so he ordered the chicken sukiyaki not speaking Japanese and just reading the menu you CAN NOT tell that this is Stew! And it doesn't say silver noodles, broth, soup, stew, fluid anything it just says what the menu reads I'll post a pic. So I went and asked the host/manager, owner I don't know what he really does but he's always there. I asked what is this? On the menu it doesn't say it's soup it's not in the soup section it doesn't say broth or anything. His answer? Really what he said, "we don't call it soup it's stew." ARE YOU KIDDING ME!?! I said calmly where does it say on the menu that it is stew? And to boot it's in the entree section! He asked if we wanted something else I said yes because not only was it stew but it wasn't good. It wasn't horrid but it wasn't good. He put in a rushed order of generic teriyaki chicken. Because I said we didn't want to wait another 30 min since we all had our food already. Honestly the thing he should have done was make something new and offer some kind of compensation for the fact that the entire table had it's food and now the birthday boy does not. I usually don't want any kind of "let us get that for you" but tonight I did! It was a birthday dinner! The menu is misleading! Rghh I'm mad. Will I go back maybe, did I leave the server more than 20% tip yes because unless you FAIL as a server I always leave that much even when I'm mad. I popped in here for lunch while visiting a friend in North Bay. Located just off 101, it has convenient parking I selected the sashimi lunch special, trying to enjoy as much fresh bay fish as I could before returning back to London, where the Japanese food is of lower quality To be fair, I have to judge restaurants against their peers and in the Bay area, I found the sashimi at Robata to be average. There was a nice variety on the plate and I walked out feeling satisfied but I've had better in the Bay area read more

This is my favorite *affordable* sushi restaurant! Everything is always fresh, and the staff is super sweet. They have tons of specials and I always am able to get a seat - at least at the bar. Robata is my go-to sushi spot now. I work near by and like that they have a bento lunch that is switched up daily. I've been a few times for dinner and was happy to see it was consistent as far as friendly service and sushi quality. So far my favorites are Crunchy Saigon Roll, Ahi Tuna Poke, Hamachi Kama and Hirame Nigiri. Oh! And the Miso soup "deluxe". It takes the original up a notch, get it. Also, TBH Japanese restaurants aren't usually known for their desserts, HOWEVER, I am happy to say this place has some sort of raspberry tapioca dessert that is DELICIOUS! Get that too. read more

Served sushi without wasabi and then charge .95 to bring a luminously green paste with very little bite. Better than I thought it would be! Hadn't been here since 1988. Not sure why I never bothered to go back, as I remembered it being very good. Friday night after Xmas was very busy. No tables, lots of people waiting at the door, so we sat at the sushi bar. They had a great $22 special that included sashimi, sushi, miso soup, seaweed salad, tempura shrimp and tempura veggies, mochi ice cream, and a BBq'd salmon piece. It was all so good and plentiful. Family had assorted sushi and sashimi, and we all thought the fish quality was great. Loved how real Japanese people were working, which is pretty rare nowadays. The ambiance is so pretty at night. Brought me back to my trips to Japan. Made me want to go back to Japan and eat more Japanese food! read more
