3.5 stars I had high hopes based on word of mouth and things I read. Granted, expectations can often do more harm than good, but I walked away a little disappointed. That is not to say it wasn't good, it was quite good, just not one of those really memorable meals that makes you dream of returning. This is the first place I take friends for dinner in Paris when they come to visit. There is nothing like a perfectly (and purposefully) undercooked steak to give visitors the true taste of French cooking. Add a bit of mustard to your bite of beef and you're in heaven. Since arriving in Paris in Feb. I've now been to Robert et Louise several times and it never disappoints. The wine is good, and not too expensive. The "plats" (or mains) are all variations on a hunk of meat, and I've yet to meet one that I didn't like. The mains come with potatoes, and for extra fun, order the sauteed mushrooms on the side and some salad (you'll need the greens to digest all that meat, trust me). Service here is generally good and the servers are nice. The seats near the window are lovely for people watching, but you'll also choke on cigarette smoke from neighbors or from the servers while on their breaks. For a real treat, try to get seats near the open fire oven, or (my favorite) in the cave downstairs. And their creme brulee is AWESOME! read more

What an authentic French experience! We came here after reading the great reviews, and we were not disappointed! It was so unique to see the slabs of meat fresh from a butcher right behind us. The cook was chopping up the meat and throwing it onto a grate in a fireplace. Talk about fresh. The foie gras here was great (and I usually don't like it) and was accompanied by the most amazing bread. It was orange in color and I have no idea what it was made of. All I know is that it was the best bread I have ever had!! We also shared a couple pieces of fresh sausage which were very good as well. I had a filet which was cooked pretty well, and the potatoes were a smash hit. Cooked just right and absolutely delicious!! Our friends had the duck and rack of lam and they were very pleased with their dishes too. For dessert, we had creme brulee - I thought it was good too. Finally had time to sit down and write this review. Was there a month ago and on our last night decide to have a nice steak dinner. Reading all the reviews, made me excited about finally trying this place. We order the cote de boeuf and asked for it medium since it seemed they under cook a little. Well what we got was just a hunk of rare meat. It was completely unseasoned, and was just chewy. It was barely edible. They barely give you enough potatoes for 1 person, but except you to share with another. I honestly don't know how people think this is delicious meat. It's by far the most terrible flab of steak I've had in my life. Our cut had more fat (that wasn't even rendered that meat) I was utterly disappointed. Reading the comments seem as if this place has gone down hill since a certain someone visited this place. If you're familiar with having good quality steak, don't bother with this place. read more

Oui oui. Found Robert et Louise while looking for spots online - am so glad I did. No problem making a reservation on Tuesday for Wednesday, and when we arrived at 9:30, the place was packed and we were seated immediately in the cellar. Great old world charm down there...typical of the entire restaurant's personality that oozes simple French country cooking. The hearth provides a traditional arome throughout the building. Started with a tasty saucisson, and then had the cote de boeuf - comes out lightning fast...potatoes and minimal salad finish it off. Had the creme brulee as well...fantastic. read more

Towards the middle of our trip, we were starting to get tired of paying an arm and a leg for dinner and started to look for restaurants in the moderate price ranges. We tried to find place after place one afternoon and failed to either find the location open (again, didn't know restaurants didn't open til around 630pm for dinner- though in our 30s, we eat "old people" early). Anyway, after one failed attempt at finding a place, we stumbled upon this restaurant. We walk in a little after 6pm and the owner at the door promptly tells us they're still closed. UGH. I'm thinking, I'm really, really tired and would like to sit down. We ask if we may wait and he says, sure, np. So hubby and I choose a table and start to unwind. We notice that zagat had said the decor was lacking, but we found it charming. We loved the old wood and rustic look so this was right on par for us. It was easy to wait the few minutes until they were ready to serve us. We ordered different steaks which were cooked in an open wood stove just a few feet away. We noticed that a dumb waiter was used to bring some other side dishes up and down. Needless to say, we enjoyed every minute of it. The staff is really attentive and polite. We've marked this as a location to return to. Food was good as was the service. While it may not be the best meal of your life, you can't go wrong here for a good meal all around. read more

This place was delicious. As an American, I would suggest to order the meat cooked to a higher degree than what you usually get. Anthony Bourdain is my spirit animal/spirit husband so OF COURSE I had to come here. We came for a girls night of wine and steak. The food was SO good that the entire time we didn't even talk/gossip, just devouring the steaks we ordered. The portions are generous and perfectly seasoned, and prices are reasonable for the quality of meat and the sides. The entire place is packed during even during off peak dinner times (we came at 7:30) and luckily we were able to snag some seats at a communal table along with some asian tourists. But we didn't care, with the good wine flowing and yummy steak in Paris there really is nothing to complain about. Pro-Tip: Try to get a reservation, if you're coming at 'normal' Parisienne hours (8:30-9pm) then I seriously doubt you'd be able to get a seat. Also, there's a lot of tourists (damn you spirit animal!) in this place because it's so good. read more

We stopped by here after researching Yelp reviews. This place is great for dinner. We didn't have reservations and hoped that the wait wouldn't be long but they took us in right away. The staff were friendly and the food excellent. They speak English as well. The place was had an old France feeling to it. I do recommend the froi gras. The dish comes with a glass of sweet white wine that you'll need because the froi gras is pretty rich in flavor. What I do recommend is use the house bread to eat it with instead of the ones on the dish. It's one of the best I've had here in Paris so far. The escargot were tasty and plump as well. For the main course we had the steak for 2. It comes with a salad and potatoes. I got it medium rare and it came out a bit more rare, but it was still pretty good. Overall this is place is recommended. Come here and you will not be disappointed with the experience, the food, the people. Fyi I recently heard from some other patrons and workers during our travel that medium rare in France is actually rare for Americans. I don't know how true that is, but I would tell them how I would want it to look (pink, red not much blood, or red and bloody, etc) that's what we did during the rest of our travels and everything came out great. read more

We didn't have a reservation but planned to go on Tuesday evening as they opened for dinner at 7pm. According to others on yelp, this is the best time to go if their reservation list isn't heavy. We were the first ones there and because we had no reservation, we were offered to share a table upstairs or to obtain our own private table, we could sit downstairs. This reeks a bit of Parisian favoritism (as others have also stated) but we didn't care because even if they were saying something about about us Americans we couldn't understand them anyway! And being the first guests, we had a giant table all to ourselves! We ordered the escargot and the cote du beouf for two, both of which were absolutely excellent! The snails were scrumptious and the steak was to die for! We spent an entire week in Paris and having to eat out all the time, food can get expensive. Considering this meal (plus wine) was about about 65 euros and how excellent the food was, we considered this a steal! We would definitely return. Oh, and if you do want a private table, their downstairs is actually setup pretty well, so don't be turned off by this. We just wanted to sit upstairs by the kitchen and amongst the locals! read more

Walk in make a reservation, the place is in demand. Really really loved eating here a couple of times on a recent trip. While I'd probably skip the big rib steak next time, the other dishes were really top notch. Perfect neighborhood place to sit down and split a bottle and a half with your honey. This was the first place my girlfriend and I had dinner at when we got into Paris. It was very quiet at 7:15pm, no background music. Lots of tourists. Quickly it filled up, however, and the ambience became cosier. The restaurant is very rustic and intimate inside--I love that! We ordered the cheese plate and were barely speaking to each other we were so enamoured by the cheeses! LOL. The tiger prawns left much to be desired. The atmosphere was nice, we ate downstaires in a cellar area where the waitress was polite and service quick. Snails were good but the stake plain (potatoes and salad as sides) and also quite wiry. The second the fork hit my tongue this place got its fifth star! We Yelped this place trying to find a decent meal in Paris that wasn't €€€€, we went on Monday night but they weren't open, I thiiiiink the sign said they weren't open on Mondays..... tho perhaps a Parisien should read it and change the Yelp info if needed. We went back tonight (Tuesday night around 8PM) and we didn't have a reservation, we had the option of sharing a table with another couple upstairs or sitting downstairs. We opted for upstairs because my bf wanted to see the fireplace and I guess there's some rule of thumb about never sitting downstairs *shrug* I've never heard of it and I thought it was weird sitting at their table with them but it was fine. (Plus he said the downstairs looked pretty legit). This place is small but in the cosy hole in the wall sort of way. It's set up almost like the inside of someone's home that was later turned into a restaurant with the fireplace subbing out a stove. There were a lot of people that spoke English there, I guess that's what happens when Bourdain steps into a place and it goes on TV. I didn't see the show but I read the other yelp reviews. And no we didn't go because Bourdain went, love the guy but just wanted a good steak at a good price. My bf got the entrecote (€18) and I got the duck confit (€16)..... this is where my life changes a little, to think I almost ordered the filet (which I'm sure would have been delicious). This...... was one of the best meals of my life. You know when you're already full but the food's just too good you can't stop? You know you're going to feel almost sick to your stomach you're so full later? Yea. It was like that. You know that scene in Ratatouille where he closes his eyes and invisions the taste of the cheese, how they were like bursts of colors intertwining to making something beautiful? I had that moment at the table, eyes closed and everything. I knew I'd be in pain but I couldn't even care. The duck was good at first, and then it just got better and better, and the potatoes were a PERFECT compliment. Oh god I'm salivating just thinking about it and I'm STILL full from dinner. My boyfriends steak was amazing, you could taste the fire in the steak. Steak over a fireplace, who knew :) I'm not a HUGE fan of rib eye steak just cus I don't like dealing with fat and muscle anywhere, but I'll admit, for something without sauce or anything on it, it was pure deliciousness! An authentic Parisiene meal with lots of meat & wine!!! Visited Robert et Louise for dinner last night. It was a Friday night so it was wonderfully busy right from their opening time of 7pm, which was right when we were strolling past & decided to pop in. Because we didn't have a reservation we were put on a table with another couple which was fine by us & only added to the whole experience. We got chatting and they were tourists too, so it was nice to chat in English! Now we'd heard this was the best place to get beef in Paris so we ordered the beef ribs to share (900g!!!). It was quite reasonably priced at €44 including delicious sautéed potatoes and a green leaf salad with French dressing. The whole package together was to die for! We ordered our beef medium but if I went back I would recommend ordered it medium-well, as it was pretty much still moo-ing. I also suggest asking the host which wine he recommends. I love steak. This rustic restaurant is bigger than it looks outside. Try and sit downstairs if you can, there's more room to spread out and you'll need it once you get all the food they give you! Lots of choices for cuts of meat. The salad and veggies aren't spectacular but you're there for the steak so who cares. Came here with three others and ordered the steak for three, smoked herring and sausage appetizers. The appetizers were really good. The steak was delicious, but a bit on the tough side. Had to knock them down a few stars for that, considering it wasn't exactly cheap. The decor of the place itself was nice and quirky, with a bicycle for two mounted on the wall, and some bicycle seats here and there, re-purposed into wall lamps. It was a bit too hot inside...maybe the ventilation was poor. read more

This place is out of the way but worth the walk. Tiny restaurant by American standards but offers fantastic atmosphere and good food. Again, we did not experience stuffy or rude French waiters. The manager was friendly and accommodating and seated us downstairs immediately. Our waiter was very friendly and attentive. I had the ribeye and my wife had the beef filet. We both really enjoyed our steaks served with potatoes and salad. Meat was juicy and cooked perfectly. Service was very prompt. If you are looking for a good meal at great prices, by Paris standards, then this restaurant is a must visit. read more

One of the highlights of my trip to Paris was dining here. We initially did not plan on trying this place, however, we found this thanks to Yelp. Foreign land with less English speaking people? Check! Steak that bridges the gap of all tongues? Double check!! Delicious wine that makes the wife happy and consider eating red meat for life again?? I think we found a winner here! Note: It's not your standard back at home steakhouse Del Frisco Double Eagle or Peter Luger's and it's not a 'romantic setting' kind of place. Okay, first I'm going to admit it, we got the idea of eating here after seeing it on one of Anthony Bourdain's Paris episodes. Well, Tony was spot on. Robert et Louise was a delight in every way. Our first visit we were seated upstairs at one of the communal tables, where we sat with another very friendly couple. It was a cold winter day and all of us had staticky hair standing straight up. The open fire made it rustic and cozy as we sat back and warmed up. Meal consisted of cote de boeuf for two, potatoes, green salad and red wine. It simply doesn't get any better. Steak was served on a wooden platter. Fantastic food and atmosphere, and the waiter was gracious, even when we mentioned the TV program which he's probably heard a thousand times. Went here the night we got engaged on our last night in Paris. It was crowded, but Robert and Louise's son was kind enough to seat us at the communal table by the fire. The steaks were gorgeous and delicious, and we struck up a conversation with a Chilean man and his son seated next to us. They got up to leave and wished us well on our engagement, and the waiter told us they had paid our bill! Viva Chile and the Chicago Boys. As we exited, Robert and Louise's son helped us take photos outside the restaurant. The experience was a slice right out of a movie. Magical! I hope you have some magic memories here too. If you're looking for a good simple steak and meat place, this is it. I didn't make reservations and as a walk-in on a Tuesday @9pm was seated at the bar. I felt lucky given locals typically dine late and this place gets packed. Not a problem for me, though if you're looking for a more relaxing experience make reservations to get a table. The idea of meat cooked in a fire grill in a small quaint place is pretty cool. In general, the food was good - ribeye and lamb, both come with lettuce ("salad"), but order the crudity if you want a full salad. The price is reasonable for the amount of food and qual you. A nice change from the pastries and baguette sandwiches I'd been eating during my stay. English was no problem w/ the host and waitresses. read more

Stopped by Robert et Louise for a low-key French meal on a recent visit to Paris. The restaurant itself is very cool - upstairs the kitchen is open and features a wood fire for cooking in addition to the flat tops and gas stoves. Downstairs is like a cave - one of those cool Paris basements. If you look in and it seems busy, there may be seating in the basement so don't be discouraged. We did see this place on No Reservations, but it doesn't seem to have gotten touristy, weird, or overcrowded. It had the great atmosphere that Bourdain showed off in the episode. Service was fast, professional, and happy to work in English. We sat at the bar and the bartender made excellent wine suggestions for us. Bar seating was a bit cozy, but as a result we ended up making friends with fellow travellers. Started with escargots - good, but pretty standard. We split the big steak and oh boy, was it ever delicious, and plenty of food for two people. We still decided to have dessert, though - I had the cheese plate which would easily have been enough cheese for both of us. He had a chocolate cake of some sort - not my cup of tea. Even with all the wonderful places to eat in Paris I would happily come back to Robert et Louise and definitely recommend it. read more

For the two times that I have been here, I would have to say, I love this place. I have to admit, I found out about this place after viewing the Paris episode of Bourdain's No Reservations and felt that it might be more of a tourist trap but regardless of that, it was really good and it didn't disappoint! I am not an avid meat-eater but each time I was here, I was able to scarf down more meat than I would in a week. The cote de boeuf is amazing. The place is charming and rustic with minimal seating and a huge communal table towards the end of the restaurant. It reminds me of eating out of a 1900s style rustic French kitchen with cast iron utensils and pots and pans hung as decor. Tables and chairs were made thick and sturdy from some wood. The wood burning stove is where they grill their meats and the kitchen is open so you see pretty much everything being prepared-meat sliced and thrown onto the grill. Very simple and very tasty was all the food served to us. The pate de campagne is out of this world. Seriously, I liked it more than any of the other dishes. It was the third week of December, the weather was cold, and coming into this place made me feel good and fuzzy all over. The ambiance is friendly, comfortable and jolly. I have had a great experience here and when we came back the next year, it was equally good. I will definitely return here so long as I come back to Paris. read more

They also hold tables for walk-ins which was great because I hate making reservations while on vacation.
