He literally, potentially saved my life... This review has been a year in coming... In 2018 I had massive back pain that MRI shows a few disk and nerve issues..Months of PT and 4-5 different scans and Med treatments didn't enlighten the issue. Decided to consult with Neurosurgeon...I'm very thorough in research for Reviews/History/Med. Grades, Etc. led me to Dr. Bray specifically... I got an appointment within 1 week(I was shocked as highly reviewed he was at this. Good timing)...Consult needed a higher grade MRI that was right across the street.. FF 1 month into epidural..then results were so-so and follow-up...Dr.Bray didn't accept my pain signatures at that point with what we saw on the disk issues from the scans and started doing exploratory scans to see why my MRI's(so many at this point...lol) were not showing a bigger issue....So many other Dr's would have just sent you down the road.(I obviously already experienced this) and he didn't.... FF another month and we find a MASSIVE TUMOR(Pink Grapefruit size) on my left anterior thigh pushing nerves, arteries, etc....It was amazing the size of this thing not deforming the surface of the leg or getting noticed or thought of by anyone other than Dr. Bray, and also causing me no leg pain where it was located....He of course called me immediately upon discovery(Rough call...lol) and said get to an oncologist fast. FF to October 2018, Hoag,Irvine...I had a radical resection of my left anterior thigh after 6 cores showed malignant 11X7cm A.L.T....Jan '19 back at work... Today, finally time to write a very thorough "Thank you Dr. Bray!!!" Back issues are still there, but manageable for the time being...I will be of course using Dr. Bray if I ever do surgery off of the research i have done and my experience with his dedication from listening to patient and office staff. Seriously??? What type of Dr. do you want in your corner? Dr.'s are over-booked, over-worked, over-complained at, and staff never appreciated.... Have nothing but good to say about Dr. Bray. He replaced two discs in my neck and I have been pain free for a year and a half now. I had a list of questions before the surgery. New Year's eve 1989, I was in a chain reaction car accident. I got rear ended by a car doing about 50 mph. A few weeks later, whiplash set in. I was a mess! Two years of PT for sciatica (nerve root stretching - as fun as it sounds), and I couldn't sit in a chair without incredible pain. I was working in orthopedic sales at the time, so I knew several local doctors in town and they all recommended Dr. Bray due to his micro-surgery technique which preserves the ligaments in the back instead of removing them. I am now pain free 30 years later in my L4 and L5 discs, (although there was another disc (L1) that was too risky to fix at the time, and I still deal with that daily). I liked, trusted and had complete confidence in neurological spine surgeon Robert S. Bray, Jr., M.D. and his PA-C, Layla Sotoodeh, from my first meeting with them. I had been living with chronic severe nerve pain for several months and was in constant agony. A Red Bull extreme athlete referred me to Dr. Bray. I was interested in cervical disc replacement surgery and the Red Bull athlete had the same surgery by Dr. Bray and raved about him. When I met Dr. Bray, we discussed my problems in detail and he described exactly how he would address them. He did such a good job that I didn't need to ask any of the questions that I had intended to ask. Further, he could empathize with the pain I was in because he had experienced the same chronic severe nerve pain and had cervical disc replacement surgery himself. I was so confident and impressed by Dr. Bray that I scheduled surgery on the spot. This is a long overdue review. My daughter is a patient of Dr. Bray's and had two surgeries when she was 14 years old due to her having AVMs (artery vein malformations). Dr. Bray is the absolute best surgeon and is an answer to prayer. There staff was horrible. No fallow up 3-4 days with no return calls. I finally gave up on them after waisting my time for 4 days of filling out forms back and forth. Never did get an answer on when my appointment would be. It's a good thing too because I read reviews about this so called specialists doctor. Dr. Bray diagnosed my 18 year old son after SIX different doctors failed to diagnose him with Spinal AVM. We were told over and over that there was absolutely nothing wrong with my son. One doctor even told me to take him to a psychiatrist because he was faking his symptoms for attention! My mother just had back surgery with Dr. Bray 2 weeks ago. She has been to various back/spinal doctors & chiropractors, and has had two back surgeries already (with another doc). She also just had eye surgery with some clown of a doctor three weeks prior to this surgery(scary experience!). I've also spent my fair share of time in hospitals and medical offices. So we've kind of already been around the block on this a few times. Dr. Bray & his staff at the Newport location were A-MAZING!!! I can't say enough how great they ALL were. While this process can be quite nerve racking, he and his staff took their time to make sure everything was understood. I was impressed how thorough Dr. Bray ( and his entire staff) were ( and continue to be) throughout the process. They really helped my mom and I stay calm and positive that all would go well. I'd heard that Dr. Bray was a master at his craft which is why we chose to go with him after seeing a number of doctors. What came as a pleasant surprise was how great all of his support staff was also! Dr. Bray was very professional, patient, serious, and detailed. I felt that he wasn't arrogant nor had the God complex like some doctors I've met. I liked that he was very realistic in what to expect, and didn't make any false promises. While my mom is still in recovery now( going on week 3 of 8) I have high hopes for her because I'm amazed at how much she could do so soon after. I could kick myself for not noting everyone's name that helped us along the way so far, and I apologize if I forgot someone or got a name wrong. The NEWPORT DISC medical center location is state of the art and aesthetically pleasing. It's super clean, modern, quiet, and very private. The setting really helped promote a calm feeling within. Admittedly, I am not the easiest person to please. However, I was not only pleased, I am still AMAZED at how well this entire experience has been so far. In 1996 I was diagnosed with painful lower back problem that did not respond to therapy nor pain management. I was referred to neurosurgeon Dr. Bray who had an excellent reputation. Dr. Bray and his staff are exceptional. I did a lot of research before choosing a surgeon to perform my microdiscectomy in November of 2016. I had struggled with lower back pain from a herniated disc for many years. By September of 2016, the pain was intolerable and my quality of life was diminishing quickly. Once I consulted with Dr. Bray, I knew he was the right surgeon for me. He is a highly trained, skilled physician. He has given life back to many professional athletes, and I also returned to a full quality of life within a few months after surgery. I had surgery by Dr Bray. After I found out that he used this on my back he dropped me as a patient and used the excuse I canceled too many surgeries. His Assistants lie for him for fear of their jobs. They are all frightened rabbits that do and say whatever he wants. Dr. Bray. gave me my life back and fixed a problem, which 10 surgeons failed to see. Let me elaborate... In 2010, I had a failed fusion at L5-s1 ( At Hoag, with Dr. Dobkin, don't see that butcher). After this fusion my symptoms got worst and worst, it seemed like, something would happen every once in a while and my pain would get worst and worst. I started to develop Nerve pain burning and ringing in my feet and legs, The doctors I found would only tell me to do injections and take pain meds. Yet nothing seemed to help my problem and the pain got worst and worst, after 4 years of suffering, going through 10 doctors, pain meds, PT and wanting to commit suicide, someone recommended Dr. Bray, It was hard to schedule with him, since he is extremely busy and always in demand. There is a reason his patients worship him. He is the real deal - not just some big name. I had two neck surgeries with Dr. Bray within 12 months and he took away decades of neck pain and turned me back into a fully functional human being after being so debilitated with pain prior to surgery that I truly thought my quality of life was gone forever. I know dozens and dozens of people who had the same neck surgery I had with different doctors and I'm the only one who had zero swallowing problems after surgery. Zip, none, nada. Maybe I just got lucky, but I tend to think that the lack of swallowing complications was attributable to the skill of Dr. Bray, not just blind luck. Before I selected Dr. Bray as my surgeon, I interviewed four other surgeons and there was never a doubt in my mind that I wanted Dr. Bray to do my surgery, even though he was the hardest to schedule with. I won't give names, but Surgeon No. 2 kept me waiting over two hours for a consult, showed up for the consult in a $2,000 Italian suit and rushed me through the consult because he obviously had somewhere more important to be (I know a surgeon can afford a nice suit, but gee I might have more confidence in you if you wore scrubs and at least acted interested in my case). Surgeon No. 2 completely dismissed Dr. Bray's surgical plan and said there was "nothing to be gained" from two surgeries. Surgeon No. 3, who also kept me waiting for hours, called me "dear" like I was either 5 years old or 80 years old and told me he was the best surgeon in the U.S. (a legend in his own mind), and also told me that the only reason Dr. Bray wanted to do two surgeries on me was so he could make more money. Surgeon No. 4, who charged me $1,500 for the consult, well, I can only describe him as fake-nice and ultimately I concluded a true B.S. artist. (Dr. Bray is the complete antithesis of a B.S. artist - there is nothing fake about Dr. Bray and what you see is what you get). Surgeon No. 4 also completely dismissed Dr. Bray's surgical plan. The only other surgeon who impressed me was Surgeon No. 5 -- Dr. Bray's younger associate, Dr. Sanjay Khurana, who like Dr. Bray was extremely serious and detailed. Dr. Bray may be hard to get in to see, but when you do see him, he is 100% focused on you. When he comes in to the room, he has already reviewed your imaging in detail, has seriously thought about your case and has a plan. Finally, Dr. Bray is not just a brilliant diagnostician and a gifted surgeon, but I also experienced care from him that went well beyond the call of duty (and yes I'm just an ordinary person, not a celebrity, an athlete or a mogul). With my first surgery, I had serious post-anesthesia nausea and vomiting. Both Dr. Bray and the anesthesiologist came back to the surgery center at 9:00 p.m. the night of surgery to see what was going on even though Dr. Bray could have easily stayed home and merely sent the anesthesiologist to verify my status. After they verified that I was stable, the anesthesiologist left and Dr. Bray could have left as well. However, he saw how frightened I was and so he calmly came into the room and sat down to talk to me as if there was nowhere else in the world he would rather be at that late hour. I apologized profusely to him for ruining his evening, as I was well aware that he had started surgery at 7:30 a.m. that morning. He dismissed my apologies and told me that he wasn't just in it for the money, that his heart and soul was being a surgeon, that I was his patient and that not only was he happy to be there with me, he was coming back at 1:00 a.m. to check on me again and that he wasn't releasing me in the morning before he saw me. I will never forget that as long as I live. I know Dr. Bray is a sailor and he is exactly who you would want to be steering your ship through a storm. Good luck trying to get an appointment with Dr. Bray. I called his office 6 times over a 2 1/2 week period. Filled out and faxed a very long registration packet and gave them all my insurance information. They didn't return any of my calls. Every time I called I spoke with someone else in the office. One admin told me "she did her part" which was to email another admin and tell her to call me. For a $450 consult cost you would think they would take the time to schedule a new patient. Nope. I can't say enough about what an amazing experience I had with Dr. Bray and his staff. I dealt with severe sciatic pain from a herniated disc for 6 1/2 months. During my first meeting with Dr. Bray, he didn't beat around the bush and told me exactly the procedure that I needed to have. We discussed a couple options and I elected to have the procedure he recommended given my existing condition. He scheduled me for the procedure within a week. After the procedure, having come around from the anesthesia, I was able to get on my feet. The pain was completely gone.
