When walking in you just go straight to the counter to order. I believe it is a mom and pops run restaurant. They were so friendly and accommodating to our big group. She explained the menu and told us we could take something off if we didn't like it. The food was so flavorful the chicken tasted like how my grandma would make it. The Asada was were tender . This taco shop opens late and near our Airbnb, making it convenient for late night food runs. Especially after being out all day. My friends picked up the food for us and we were surprised how generous the portion size is for its bucks. A lot of places that I tried in the past, especially carne asada fries, it's best eaten hot and right away. A lot of times the fries are way too thick making you full fast, but it's not the case here. The fries were thin and light batter. A plus it was not soggy! I couldn't stop eating. (Receipt line item was carne asada fries), same price 14.55 plus tax. TOTALLY hit the spot. Huge portion, the meat was tender and crispy in all the right places and had all the toppings I love - guac, sour cream, cheese. I got both the red and green salsas and was delighted that both were spicy but not too spicy where I can't taste the food as well. Roberto's Taco Shop in Clairemont SD was a perfect accident. I wasn't sure if the other locations were open. When I called this location, they were open, & open regular hours on a Holiday (Labor Day). Yess! Can't leave SD without getting a Cali Burrito & taking some Cali Burritos home. Got a tad lost w/ Navigation. But clear as day you'll find it near a smoke shop. What a great spot esp for those munchies. I Phone ordered & when I picked up, my food was ready & hot. Good Sized Burritos. Half now & half for my next meal. Red & Green salsa was thrown in the bag. The Red sauce was a good spicy sauce. The Green sauce was good but appeared gloppy. Hopefully it was just solidified, & not an old batch. Still tasted good. We were happy with our Burritos. Next time we'll eat inside or at the tables outside & not in the car. We were looking for a good place for dinner, and this one had some good reviews so we decided to check it out. We were very glad we did. We were a group of six adults, and we were hungry. We looked up the menu online, and called in our order. It was ready pretty quickly, and everything was really good. We ordered the Carne Asada fries, some chicken tacos, a 2 cheese enchilada combo, a Carnitas burrito, and a chimichanga. When we got to the restaurant, service was fast & friendly. I used to come to this Robertos for years back when I lived close by, and I was really excited to get my old go to today. California Burrito with sour cream. When the nice cashier lady said $16.50 I thought I mishearď... even at the expensive place in La Jolla it's around $13. I handed over $20, and I didn't miss hear... they really charged over $16 for a burrito. But that isn't why I am giving this a 1 star. The cashier charged me for sour cream... and the burrito was dry... no sour cream at all. I was already 10 minutes away, so I wasn't going to back. The photo clearly shows the receipt, it says "extra sour cream". And you can see the burrito has no sour cream. I went from being super excited, and the burrito is big... but this just sucked. Paying over $16 for a burrito that doesn't have the sour cream that costs extra... I know it sounds like I am being petty, but I am irritated and sadly think this will be the last time I ever go to this Robertos after this. read more

This Roberto's has become my new favorite taco shop. I found it incidentally; I was starving at it was near by. I was greeted by the staff who were all very nice. My go to order is the 5 rolled tacos! The guacamole is sooo good and they give you a great portion. Their salsas are good, my favorite is the red one. The ambiance is very classic taco shop. I have been trying to support more local businesses in the pandemic and had heard good things from some people from my kids school so decided to try here. We have eaten here 3x is the past 2-3 months. First time we ordered we got rolled tacos and carne asada fries. My first time getting new to me taco shop food I always order rolled tacos and either a california burrito or carne asada fries. The pros from this trip were the meat was seasoned well. The cons were the fries were not cooked all the way through so they were soggy. 2nd time got carne asada chips and rolled tacos. Carne asada chips were SO GOOD. However while I know taco shop food is not "good" for you when I got the bottom layer of the chips there was a big old puddle of grease/oil. Which is fine I get it is fried but was did not make me feel good about eating them. 3rd time decided to get breakfast burritos. I got bacon, egg and cheese, my husband got egg and sausage. Breakfast burritos are not their strong suit in my opinion. The bacon was thin and string-y (like fast food bacon) and the eggs were overcooked/burnt. It was disappointing as their prices are so low it was less than $15 for 2 burritos vs. Cotixan which is $18 for 2 and while their bacon is "salty" their eggs and other ingredients are far superior to the Roberto's breakfast burrito. Overall I will still eat here when wanting taco shop food and to support local but this is by no means my go to spot read more

I've lived in San Diego for a decade and only tried Roberto's for the first time a couple of months ago. I learned that Roberto's opened the first taco shop in San Diego back in 1964! I ordered a carnitas taco and an adobada taco, each were a little over $4. I should have only ordered one taco since I didn't realize these were pretty big in size. To me it's the size of a burrito lol. I thought they'd be the tiny street tacos that Tacos El Gordo sells haha. It took me a couple of days to finish the leftovers.
