The work the tech did was good. When he came back to troubleshoot a why some breakers were not working. He tinkered around for about an hour (their minimun) and couldn't find the problem. It took another tech 5 minutes to identify that a wire burned clean though and fixed it fast. The moral here is not to hire this company if you expect free warranty work. read more

If you have read my more technical reviews you will see that I'm a serious Yelper & DIY'er (Do It Yourself). Last year I installed over 2000' of electrical in my house - it was an old fix-er-up-er (aka dump). In the process I have developed advanced electrical knowledge. This year I got into bending EMT conduit and setup two sub-panels and an underground feed. This is where Roberts comes in. While in the electrical isle at home depot I met Robert Donovan. I received some expert guidance about the various methods of joining two metal junctions boxes back back but separated by a wall. I also discussed some other aspects of my latest project - running a 40A feed to a 220v Level 2 charger for an electric car. The rapid charger cost $800 so I didn't want to take any chances. This guy is much nicer and things out of the box compared to other pro's that I have hired to review my projects. What noticed and like about this guy is you keep throwing problems at him he gives you multiple solutions and doesn't say things like "well, why would you want to do that?". Finally, I pulled out $10 or $20 cash and he didn't want to accept it. I insisted because I said I would never expect serious professional advice for free and I run a small computer repair business my self and hate being hit up for free advice. A note to my fellow yelpers: Electrical work take lots and lots and lots of time. I did a complete rewire in my shed and the connection to the house including drilling etc. I spent many full 8 hour days doing it. I have all professional tools by Ideal & Klein, a right angle drill, Irwin bits and extensions etc. I'm a perfectionist too but I would never want to do this work for a living because it is so easy when working with old buildings to underestimate the time to do the work. So much older wiring is crap and has bad grounds. There is a huge difference in slapping a wire in and doing it to code. So if you are a diy'er / apartment owner etc and you plan to do the work yourself you can hire this guy to go over your project and make sure it is up to code. You can save money by doing drilling, opening walls, stucco, etc and have him do the work that needs an expert. Some day I'll have the money to say - you do it all well I go sailing. read more

Robert has been extremely professional, on-time, and he always calls ahead of time. The price is great and they are honest as can be. I think they are trustworthy. You can tell because they're really busy. It is a bit hard to get an appointment, and they do require a credit card to come out and charge $150 to troubleshoot and give an estimate, but it is worth it. They solved the problem and took care of it efficiently for a reasonable price. I'm a happy customer and will call them again for any electrical needs I may have. Everything was great from the time I called in to make the appointment to the job itself. Matt was courteous and took the time to explain the charges and setup an appointment time. Having electrical work done is always painful, but in this case, we actually feel good about having the work done. We had wires burning inside of our walls-- Another electrician could not figure out what was wrong. Enter Robert. This man is amazing and is an expert in his field. We walked around with him and he had the vision of knowing where all of our electrical boxes and wires were without cracking in to the wall. We had to have the house re-wired (afterall, it is 90 years old). The beauty of it is that no holes had to be put in our walls, Thank God. These guys are great! I found them from a google search online and called them after reading positive reviews. They came over at the appointed time and were very polite and professional. Their bid was below the other two companies that I had talked to so we went with them. They came over on time the day of the work and completed the job in a timely, professional manner. They were very friendly and did everything we asked and more. They didn't leave any kind of mess and left our walls in perfect condition, not even requiring drywall repair as we had expected. I needed to have the light on the front of my house replaced and I wanted to add a second one at the same time. I hired an electrician from the phone book who supposedly had a license and insurance. I showed him exactly where I wanted the lights but he put the new one too high on the wall. He ended up charging me full price for installing the two lights even though they were hung uneven. read more

Today I learned that when the power to your house goes out but your neighbors still have power, then it means your master circuit breaker has crapped out. Power went out at midnight. I was half-asleep on Benadryl when I reported the outage to SDGE. SDGE called back and sent a technician (two hours later) who said the meter looked fine. Fast-forward seven hours later, I called SDGE and told them I still don't have power. They sent a technician again and were unable to give a time-frame for arrival. Meanwhile, the ice cream is melting in my fridge and I am sweating like a pig. An hour later, the technician says the breaker needs to be replaced. That's when I called electricians on Yelp one-by-one. The first one on the list; no answer. Roberts Electric answered the call and every time I called them back. They came out to examine the breaker on the same day and replaced the part without me having to wait at home. They are very professional and knowledgeable electricians. We had Roberts come and do a quote for backyard lighting that was a fairly involved job (just under $2000 worth of work), and they got back to us in a reasonable time frame. We chose them for the work as they had previously done good work for us on our former home. They showed up the day we scheduled them, albeit a bit later than planned...but they called ahead to say they were running late. The job was supposed to take about a day's worth of work, and they didnt start until Wed afternoon, so we knew it would go into Thursday but didn't mind. By the end of Thursday they still werent done and said they'd need to come back Friday....but on Friday they called to say they had another job that was conflicting and wouldn't be over, and couldnt make it on Saturday either and said they'd need to come back on Monday. We weren't too happy with this as we were having a large gathering of people over on Sunday and needed the work done before then. In hindsight (and as a recommendation for all other customers), I should have been clear from the start that we needed the work done prior to Sunday...but with an estimate of "1 days work" and them starting on Wednesday, I never really thought to worry about whether it would be done by Sunday. So I was pretty upset and contacted the office. They were very apologetic and understanding of my frustration. They worked with their team to ensure they could come back to my house on Friday and finish the job, which they did. From a skill level perspective, they were great and the lighting looks awesome. I wasn't even sure how they were going to accomplish everything we had asked for as it seemed pretty complicated, but they got it all working exactly as we had hoped. Our friends were really impressed with the lighting when they saw it. Overall I wouldnt hesitate to use them again. They did get a little backed up on other jobs which caused delays and we had a little bump in the road but they were quick to remedy it, which is the most important part if you ask me (that, and of course actually doing good work). Just be clear to them what your time frame is and when you absolutely need something done. read more

Never having had to call an electrician, I was pleased that my first experience was with Roberts Electric Service. I found them through the GSDBA and then cross referenced with Yelp and the BBB. From the phone call with Matt to Robert who made the house call, they were courteous and accommodating. I even asked Robert to put on shoe boots, and he was mindful to keep checking them because one sometimes slipped off. He thoroughly checked all possible angles of the outage and finally pinpointed the not-so-obvious cause. He was even savvy enough to use everyday language to help me understand why I had faulty wiring. If the rates were a tad bit better, I'd give a full five stars. I now wonder if it was the eponymous Robert who helped me out. I'll ask next time since they'll be my go to guys for any other electrical needs. read more

Called Roberts to fix two ceiling lights that have been broken for a wall. Spoke with Ben who was very nice and informative on the phone, so I already had an idea of what the service would be like. He got the job done in just under a half hour- very efficient and courteous, and explained what he was doing along the way. I had an outlet that began smoking and needed replacement and wanted to have all of the other outlets in my newly purchased (1 year ago) condo checked as well. Ben answered my email within 30 minutes to 1 hour and set up an appointment for the next day. He called ahead, arrived right on time, and was super courteous. He replaced the one outlet and meticulously checked every single outlet in the condo and found many loose connections and wiring issues. Ben was fantastic in his workmanship and thoroughness.
