I came back to Wilmington where i grew up to go to my favorite childhood restaurant, The last time i was there was 2 years ago and I was completely satisfied, this time, I was kinda disappointed to say the least. Menu was incredibly small. Many of the staple dishes were no longer 1/2 of a double sided menu was allocated to salads and pizza...ugg! (what happened to the Pompeii platter???) My girlfriend and I stopped on the way back from treehouse brewery in Tewksbury. We were starving because there was a two hour wait at treehouse (we had a great time) for pizza. Beef carpaccio is seldom on menus, but whenever I see it, I immediately order it, and this was the largest serving of beef carpaccio that I've ever seen in my life. I grew up in Wilmington going to Rocco's regularly as Matty & Chucky continued their family legacy. My younger brother worked there for years and my family and I have so many memories there! The next/most recent owner was awful, driving my brother to quit and known broadly locally for mistreating an autistic employee. As of a few weeks ago, it is under new management and after much convincing, my mom, who still lives in town, visited and loved it! I went along with her and it felt so good/ nostalgic to be back - especially seeing old employees working and old regulars back! This spot is so cozy; one section is all booths with a working fireplace, the atrium is so lovely to sit in any day but especially on a rainy or snowy day and the bar is welcoming and spacious; truly the heart of the restaurant. The Menu is great and reasonable prices. If you like fried pickles, they're a must-order - so well-done and come with a homemade dill sauce that will have you asking for some to-go! First time to Rocco's. Small community restaurant vibe. We got there early and sat at the bar. We had a couple appetizers and some drinks. The bar staff and the other customers were all friendly. The lemon cake and fried pickles were tasty. To me the onion rings were the best part. They were thick and not stringy. Good stop all in all. We were a bit confused when we arrived and waited at the sign a few minutes with other people as it said "wait for hostess." Soon we found there wasn't a hostess yet. I went there today for lunch and ordered the Mediterranean grain bowl. When it was served, I noticed the vegetables were a bit soggy but more noticeable was the fact that there was little, if any, quinoa. I told our waitress who went back and apparently spoke to the chef. The chef indicated to her that 'it was mixed in' (neither I nor my friend could see it) but that he would give me a side order to add to it. The waitress then came out with a tiny little container, the type of container that perhaps ketchup might be in. There was no more than a tablespoon in this container!! Needless to say I was not pleased but by this time I just wanted to eat what was edible and leave. I have lived in Wilmington for close to 40 years. Rocco's has gone downhill considerably since the original owners sold it. It used to be a place where you were always guaranteed a good meal. As we entered the lobby it is quite noticeable that it needs a facelift. The rug is filthy and gives an awful smell. Was seated promptly as we had a reservation. The hostess was very nice and informed us our server would be right over. The server came right over and was very pleasant and took our drink order and let us decide on entrees. We where seated in the bar are and unfortunately we had a very LOUD group which made conversation very difficult. Service and food was very excellent but restaurant needs some updating. Had a very disappointing experience here. Made reservations for three for 6:15 (for a booth). Got there at 6:10 and checked in with the gentleman at the hostess desk. He confirmed the reservation information and walked away. After 10 minutes of us standing there invisible, another person came to the hostess desk asking if we needed help. I told her that we already informed the gentleman of our reservation. She too confirmed the reservation and proceeded to walk away. Finally at 6:35 we got seated. It was not the booth I requested but at that point we were just happy to be seated (although it would have been nice to have been asked if the table was okay.) After we were seated, at least 15 minutes went by without any acknowledgment (not even a glass of water). Different waitresses walked by multiple times. Finally my husband tracked down a waitress (who had walked by our table several times) and asked if she could please find our server. She said 'Yes that's me. It's very busy' (it really was not). We placed our drink order and that took another 15 minutes. My husband got the wrong beer but was so thirsty by that point he just drank it. We then ordered an appetizer; and given the already slow service, we said we would also place our dinner order at that time. My daughter and I placed our orders, and by the time my husband went to speak, she had walked away. She didn't even attempt to take his order!! He actually had to go get her to ask her if could order a meal!. She was unapologetic and almost baffled. Seriously??? An hour after our reservation time, we finally got our food .. but never got the appetizer! It was obvious that she was very new (we heard another waitress apologizing to a nearby table who was complaining about her) but this was pathetic. Someone should have been helping her. After the wait, the wrong beer, and the missing appetizer, we were hopeful that our meals were going to make up for it. We were sadly mistaken. I don't know what the Yelp policy is but it isn't exactly fair that a restaurant changed ownership hands, went through a complete makeover and yet, we are still subjected to reviews from prior management. I would say disregard anything said prior to 2016. Anyway, this is no longer your grandparent's Rocco's. Gone are the days of gigantic portions that should be 3-4 meals each with little regard to quality.....or super cheesy décor. The inside is now much fancier and almost the entire space has been upgraded. There are cool inserts of six ft. tall cases of wine corks, Portuguese glass and stoneware all around the restaurant and I think even an updated bar area. The new owners have done just about everything right on the inside and it seems to have a lively atmosphere, at least it was for a recent dinner show we attended. My understanding is that they also have a guitarist one day a week although I don't remember the exact day. Service was spectacular and even sincere all night long, nobody had attitudes and people were just genuinely friendly. For our special dinner, it started with a side salad that included fresh mozzarella and roasted peppers. The peppers could have used a little more char on them and a few of the greens were not the freshest. Dinner consisted of a pork roll with mashed potatoes and broccoli rabe. Everything was outstanding except the pork was a tad overcooked and dry. We ended up getting two desserts and thought the tiramisu was amazing balanced with sweetness and the right amount of cake with not being overly drowned by the other ingredients. I won't review the show since it likely won't be back but there was a lot of confusion when it was over. I wish the waitresses anticipated when this might be so people could have had checks closed out and been on there way, instead we had to stay an extra 10 minutes while they hunted everyone down and it was already past 11 PM at that point. Really the only flaw in the otherwise impeccable service. I hope Rocco's can find its footing and figure out if it is going to go an Italian route or Portuguese with the new ownership. Personally, I feel like they would do better with their signature food not being Italian and sticking with what they know. Just don't be confused, they seem to have both types in a great location with ample parking......definitely recommended, for sure. read more

Ate here yesterday and served by Carla. We had chicken tenders as an app, my girlfriend had the ribeye and I had the burger. -bread was lukewarm (no problem if the bread was good, but bread was meh). -chicken fingers were decent but sauces were "off". We agreed the honey mustard tasted like miracle whip with spicy mustard...prob made right after we requested. -my girlfriend liked her rib eye. I didn't try but the mac was weird...the breading they put on the top just seemed "off", which seamed to be the theme here. -I ate 1/3rd of the burger, because it wasn't particularly good. It seems like a boxed burger from the grocery store-maybe worse. Tomatoes looked fresh and plump tho. Fries were good! -service was mixed, but we were there at the tail end of dinner, arrived at prob 7:30/7:45pm. I think she tried and she did check in on occasion...if the food is good than just okay service seems better. -Atmosphere I thought was good, obviously it leans towards an Italian vibe and where we sat it was nice, but when the live music played upstairs, they didn't shut off the stereo playing other music till my girlfriend asked...? Overall, my girlfriend likes this place because the nostalgia of going with family. For me, I would eat at Dunkin's across the lot before I would head back. I'll admit, I was tired and less hungry...but if the food was good I would say it-I love older places with a long history and I really don't love chains-so this place should have been a hit. I'm not trying to be overly critical, but you can def do better if you want a good meal...but if you have to go here, maybe just come and have some drinks and something hard to screw up. We have never been here. Impressed. Started with French onion soup that was both delicious and hot. Amazing flavor in the broth of the soup and it was oozing with cheese. Veal parm sandwich came out hoot and delicious. Feels like a home town pub and I wish they had it closer to home. The mashed potatoes were real and outstanding. Someone is out back peeling!! The staff were friendly and attentive. Super clean and the owner came by to re wipe our table when we sat down. He said it looked like it needed it. Works for me. We will be back. read more

I ordered food from Rocco's through the Uber eats app. I have celiac disease and I've always had a good experience when ordering gluten free pasta at other restaurants. My experience with Roccos was not the same. There was no option for gluten free pasta on the Uber eats app so I wrote in the notes Gluten Free Pasta for two separate dishes. The restaurant called me after I placed my order and said if I want gluten free pasta I'll have to come to the restaurant to pick it up because there's an up charge of $4.00 PER DISH. The total was already $56 after all of the fees and tax so this was upsetting that they were asking for an extra $8 because I have an allergy. While we were on the phone, the Uber driver showed up to the restaurant to pick up my order and the hostess said she hasn't even rung it in yet. I ended up asking if they can just charge my card over the phone even though I don't agree with the up charge because it was too late to cancel. I understand it cost restaurants more money to carry gluten free pasta but with so many people now requesting more gluten free options, they should be charged EQUALLY and FAIRLY just like everybody else. read more

I was introduced to Rocco's several years ago by some of my Wilmington friends. I understand it's always been a popular place with locals and also underwent a management change in recent years. I visited Rocco's a couple years ago, which I believe was under the current management, and at that time had a good experience with the food, service, and its cozy atmosphere. Last night one of my best friends and I stopped in randomly after viewing some Christmas light displays in Tewksbury. However, last night I witnessed some serious confusion amongst the waitstaff and found this experience quite different from the last. I find Rocco's to be a bit on the pricier side, when considering the cost of most entrees, and I think the dining experience should flow like a well-oiled machine to reflect this. We decided to sit at the bar so we could catch a little bit of the Bruins game. The bar scene was busy, but seemed manageable from a customer's prospective. When we first sat down there were two bartenders, but one left after setting us up with menus leaving the other to fend for himself. He seemed friendly and chatty, but a little overwhelmed at times. A large delicious-looking salad topped with grilled chicken passed by us as we glanced over the menu. It was placed in front of a man on the opposite side of the bar and met with some resistance. I overheard the conversation and soon realized he had actually ordered chicken fingers. The salad went back to the kitchen as my friend and I exchanged confused glances. How did that happen? We put in an order for calamari and sipped on some special Christmas-themed cocktails. My friend asked the bartender, in a moment that seemed less busy, if he would take a picture of us. This is our traditional 'girl's night out' to celebrate before Christmas, so she was trying to capture the moment. The bartender told us 'no' with some lengthy explanation of why not. For the record, due to the background noise I could not hear/comprehend the explanation very well, but the bits and pieces of it sounded quite silly. In the time it took for the explanation, he could have just snapped the photo. Rejection is never pleasant, even in its smallest form. Fortunately a very friendly woman at the bar jumped right up to take the picture for us. Cue the calamari... which arrived at the bar to our left by a very confused server who did not know where to place it. The server and bartender then had a brief discussion as we tried to get their attention. The bartender seemed to forget where it was supposed to go as well. Hmm... we must have really thrown him off when we asked for that photo. Once we claimed our calamari, we all came to the realization that we did not have plates or silverware. However, the guy at the other end of the bar did finally receive his chicken fingers, so not a total loss. Oh, could we have some napkins too? Thanks. The confusion between servers was really bothering me, but fortunately the calamari was delicious. The live entertainment began as a solo artist did a little guitar and vocals act. All was well until the mysterious pizza came onto the scene. "Wait, is that my pizza?" I pondered as I watched it set down in front of the people next to me. They had ordered after us, so why was their pizza out? Then I saw the look of confusion on their faces as they sent the pizza back to the kitchen. I then realized that it was indeed my pizza being shifted around and wouldn't you know it soon landed in front of me. "Don't worry, they didn't touch it" I was told. Thanks for the reassurance, but it's probably not as warm after it's round trip back and forth from the kitchen. My friend's salad arrived soon after and the same guessing game continued. The pizza, referred to as The Romano, was very good and my friend said she liked her steak salad. She claimed to be happy with the experience overall and probably would have offered an extra shiny star if she were a Yelper. Unfortunately you are stuck with me and I expect far better than this dog and pony show. I could not understand why the bartender had so much difficulty keeping track of the orders and I believe this shows a lack of interest in the customers. This experience will stick with me and I most likely will be a hesitant to come back to Rocco's in the future. If I do return, it will be for the calamari. read more

Very reliable good food. We have visited here many times. Tonight we had a party of 11 to celebrate my 10 year olds birthday. Eli was fantastic! Service was so great. Many of our orders were special requests and they were executed perfectly. Eli was also really great with our kids too. Food was really good. We had some orders of seafood, and pasta/Italian dishes. The kids ordered off of the kids menu that included 8-10 choices of meals. The portions were more generous than typical. Expect to have leftovers. I personally had an appetizer for my meal and it was plenty with left over. Prices are not low but the service, quality and quantity makes the experience worth it. I've always maintained everyone needs a few restaurants in their "restaurant rolodex" like Rocco's for traditional Italian fare, and this would be the card in mine for the Wilmington area. The atmosphere here is pleasant and very friendly, the menu has just about every type of entree you would expect, your waitress actually brings you your food, and the portions are generally large. A few things that impressed me were the decor (especially the fireplace and the terrace), the wine list, and the hot dinner rolls (as opposed to Italian bread). It was tough to gauge service, because we were there on a busy Saturday night. We were a larger party, but we were fortunate to be seated immediately. Our waitress was very busy. We would not see her for long periods of time, but when she did get to our table, we would have her complete attention, and any requests were handled promptly. You get a lot of food for any pasta dish you order, and I feel that is reflected in their prices. Though I would have been equally satisfied with a slightly smaller portion and a small side salad included with my meal. My own entree, lasagna, was a little smaller than I would have expected for the price. But it contained an unusually large amount of ricotta cheese, and the meatballs did not appear to have a lot of filler (bread crumbs) in them. Be careful in the parking lot, especially on the north side in the front. On a busy night, a lot of folks will park in spaces that aren't actual designated parking spaces, making it very tough to get in and out on that side. read more

Service was good not great. Food was awful and uncooked / over cooked. Ask for my burger to be med well it came raw.. Husband's food was dry and over cooked. When I asked for my burger to be fix they took it and burnt it and return it by dropping it on the table. Manager young girl who by the the kept telling everyone Dad is in the Azores on vacation and I'm here holding the fort down! Well she didn't do a great job and is running her Dad's business in the ground. I never ate my burger and my husband never ate his meal do to the fact it was unedible.
