We tried the buffalo chicken calzone and I loved it. My wife liked it. I loved it because it was light and fluffy when cutting and eating and cooked to perfection. The staff, usually the family, is super friendly and service is fast. Seating is comfortable but limited, however most folks are there for takeout. This is my new goto spot and I am so glad I found them. Guys who "answer" the phone don't know how to take an order. If you're too busy to take calls, just say that. Don't leave customers on the phone without a word and then hang up on us when we call back in after a ridiculous amount of time of holding only to get no one to help. Also, an estimated pickup time is a normal thing to ask for in a pizza shop, but I was rudely hung up on before even knowing when to get the food I called in to order would be ready. Probably some of the worst subs I've had. Everything on their subs is mashed together into one indistinguishable pile of greasy food. They tout their home made rolls, but they are super heavy dough rolls that absorb the grease, cheese and oil. I wish they would give up the homemade rolls and just buy piantadosi. Friendly people and quick customer service, but the food was just not that impressive. I order a sub with a cheese pizza (which seemed like it was sitting out all day) and I was disappointed with both of them. OH! I was craving a pastrami sandwich which was displayed on their menu board and when I ordered it, the guy said we don't have it today. ERASE what you don't have on the menu! Stopped by here on a whim while in middleton and looking for a new place to try. Old school sub shop vibes, north reading athletic plaques all over walls, (located across from high school) and a lot of serious grilling happening. I got a regular cheesesteak, and when ordering through door dash it doesn't allow you to specify extras on your sandwich, but regardless, it was still convenient. They prefer phone orders, not door dash. cheese steak was pretty great, actual steak and not minced beef, nice cheese to meat ratio, although the overall size of the sub was quite small. For 13$ and some change I'd expect something a bit bigger. Nonetheless the bread was better than most places. Chewy and fresh roll. I'd have liked to add onion and Mayo. The rest of the menu looked pretty good, resembling creations similar to Suppa's in Lowell, with a rendition of a fat chicken, which is a sub with French fries and mozzarella sticks inside. No complaints really, I'd return. read more

Tried this place for the first time today, and I gotta say, I'm a fan. The place is right off of 62, and goes into one of those "Oh shit!" parking lots where it's suddenly upon you, and you suddenly have to turn into it. After parking across three spots and then across a handicapped spot to the stares of the people sitting in the hair cutting place, I finally found an actual spot and parked. I had done some research of this place online before going, on, of course, Yelp, and I knew what I wanted to get when I got in there: this culinary concoction called "The Nest". When I walked in and ordered it, the boss (owner?) actually asked me if I was sure that was what I wanted. At first I was a little offended by that, but given the makeup of this sandwich, all is forgiven. Quick service, friendly staff... that's all there. Now the sandwich.... The nest is a BRILLIANT sandwich, though surely not for everyone. Chicken Fingers, Mozzarella Sticks, French Fries, Grated Cheese and Tomato Sauce all in a roll. AWESOME. Since it's essentially a junk food collection of appetizers, I can see how this sandwich is probably more appealing to the high schoolers who are located right across the street, hence the warning I received. I suppose a true test of this place would be to try one of the more mundane sandwiches and see how they stack up, but they have passed my first test, and got me liking the place, looking forward to going back again, and trying more of their wares. The Hornets Nest was referred to me from a friend for my daughters 4th birthday party at Cowabunga's in North Reading. I live in Andover so I wasn't familiar with them but took the referral as my older daughter didn't like the pizza place that Cowabunga usually ordered from. Not only was the pizza great but David, the very attentive owner, was surprisingly engaged in making sure we were taken care of (I ordered just 6 pizza's)! He followed up the next day with a phone call to make sure everything went well and we enjoyed the pizza. I've had parties catered with less response and service. I would recommend them first for the Pizza, because it was very good, but I'd recommend them again a thousand times over for the interest they took in making sure we were happy with everything. 4.5 stars for the pizza and 5+ stars for the owner and staff!! read more

When I told the guy I would be 10 minutes later than when he said it would be ready, he waited to cook them so they were ready just as i walked in and not sitting cold on a shelf. I just went in to try to order a takeout order at 7:20pm when the restaurant clearly states they do not close until 7:45pm. I usually love this spot but I have recently realized they are intentionally not answering the phones for takeout orders within 1 hour of closing. I confirmed this by driving by restaurant while I was actively calling on the phone. Not really a good way to operate your business. read more

I was on a work trip in the area. Looked it up, wanted to support a local biz that supported the schools etc. Walked in a Saturday at 4:45, with the big sign in the window saying OPEN and the hours listed as being open until 6pm. They said they were closed, I explained I was not from the area, and needed to grab a quick sandwich "NO. We are closed!" Very rude, and as I walked back to my car, two more customers were waited on. A staple of my early life was sub shops. I've been to so many, and have a favorite specialty at nearly every place. The Hornet's Nest has a menu where every single sub could be a favorite specialty. And as much quality and care goes into each. I had the seasonal Turkey Gobbler with stuffing and cranberry sauce and it was like a Thanksgiving meal in a bun. The owner was genuinely fired up to see what we thought of his creation - and it was so delicious. The menu is absolutely massive and everything is appealing. Prices are very reasonable too. Visiting family in Reading and on a tip from a coworker I decided to hit the Hornets Nest and pick up dinner on the way. We were all glad I did. Hands down some of the best food I've had period. I had to pick it up prior to 6pm because they close so this 5 star review is after it sat for 90 min until we were ready to eat. Still after sitting the pizza was fantastic (great crust, sauce and top shelf toppings), chicken wings amazing, Greek salads were way above the bar set by local pizza joints and the star for the show was the steak bomb. 10 out of 10. They claim it's the best you'll after have and I 100% agree. Nice people behind the counter too. Great job! read more

Amazing food, terrible customer service. There's no doubt that the food is delicious, the steak and cheese sub, in particular, is the best I've ever had. However, the past three times my husband and I have gone here, the girl working the register was extremely rude. We actually just picked up an order to go, and she didn't say one word to my husband besides the order total. No hello, no thank you, no good-bye, and she frankly looked pretty miserable to be there. If you don't like your job- get a new one! It's unfortunate that they don't have pleasant people working here because we would be coming here much more often. But to me, food isn't worth it if it always comes with rude customer service. read more

I was working in the area and happened upon the Hornets nest, and boy did i get stung... OUCH! I ordered the meat ball sub. It was served on a soft italian roll and the request for it to be toasted never uttered, The meatballs were small and seemed to be manufactured and frozen, cut in half so in total i got 3, one and a half inch balls with sprinkled parm cheese. The sercvice was fast, so much so the sub was up and served on a piece of butcher paper before my partner could finsh putting in his order. A flurry of activity kinda made you feel rushed. read more

I ordered a "Large Steak and cheese with mushrooms and onions" at 6:10 for a 7:00 break(I stressed that point), and they told me I could just order a sub for delivery(10$ minimum), so I said whatever, I'll get a small fry. The delivery driver started calling at at 7:08 and at 7:15 he said he was JUST leaving the Hornet's Nest. The driver didn't get there till 5 minutes after my break ended. The sub was small, and it had no onions, no mushrooms. The French Fries were fine, but I have no idea why I had to order them, every single other place in North Reading will let me order a sub for delivery without giving me a hard time. I understand if they have to have a minimum to drive out of town or if it's far away...but this wasn't the case. I've lived in North Reading my whole life, and I used to go to the Hornet's Nest all of the time, and I could not have been more disappointed. I've only been there a few times since high school, but I basically paid 10 dollars for a sub I got over an hour and 15 minutes after I ordered it and had to choke down half of in 2 minutes in the locker room before getting back to work, then eat the rest on my next break 2 hours later. (I gave away the bulk of the fries.) I understand accidents happen, and at least this place isn't Captains, but the least they could've done was said sorry, or given me the fries for free, or the whole ____ing sub for free, then maybe I'd go back. read more

Great spot to eat. My mother grew up here and she grew up loving this place. Now with coming here often for my grandfather I soon have grown up loving the place ever since I was little I always have very fond memories of getting the amazing pizza and some mozzarella sticks here and there (which are my favorite). Amazing food and wonderful people working here. Will definitely be coming back again next weekend or maybe even tonight for more pizza since it is so good! read more

PIzza was quite good. Veggie Bomb was mediocre at best, but is about the only thing to eat on the menu (besides Pizza) that is vegetarian.

They do have a nice pizza for around here. I've got to tell you though when the new owners started they had teen-aged boys working on fridays and that has traditionally been "pizza night" every time i called before I left work to order a pizza either no one answered the phone or they would discourage me from ordering a pizza with comments like "tonight?" "you'll probably have to wait an hour." These guys were driving business away for sure. I heard people say when they would come in "I tried to call." These guys were very rude. I just started order pizza there again, and those "guys" were'nt there, thank goodness. Don't leave teenagers to run a business, even if they're your teenagers. read more
