Owner and staff are great and friendly. They are in the middle of remodeling. Super cute and cozy rooms. Cheaper than most resorts there. Well kept property. They have kayaks to use. Iguanas are crazy there (they are waiting for a guy to come get them). They also have a crocodile problem because ppl fish there late at night. (At least what I was told). The beach area was a lot smaller than i expected and seen in the pictures. It had a lot of coral and seaweed. (If u snorkel would be great!). It was cloudy but the hurricane just went through so what can ya do lol. Not sure if I'd go there again but it was nice while we were there. Very peaceful place located conveniently near plenty of fun restaurants. We stayed overnight during the Christmas holidays and the wreath on our bright red door was a nice welcome. This would be a great place for a small family stay. Reservation process was easy. Rate was fair for the amount of space we had-separate bedroom, living room/dining area and a kitchenette. Front desk staff were very helpful and friendly. Had we arrived early, we could have had use of the pool and other amenities. Nice to know. Great hang out spot with loungers and tables and chairs (and iguanas!) on the water. read more

We stayed 3 days and it is an immaculate place. Our room was updated with king bed and a small alcove with coffee maker microwave and fridge. Walk in shower. But the grounds are what make this place a jewel. Heated pool and tiki hut to watch sunsets. Private beach they offer you kayaks or paddle boat to explore. Hammocks so nice with that breeze. You will hear some road noise but that's with about all places in the Keys. And we have been coming to them for over 20 years. The staff is very helpful and really pay attention to detail to make your stay pleasant. As for putting your towels in a bin outside the door, I think is a creative idea. As for the writer that worried about the cleaning of the bin,,,heads up your throwing your dirty towels in there! You really think white glove service is necessary lol I believe RRR deserves this 5 star. It's going to be on our stay here and recommend to all that want a great experience in the Keys. read more

Horrible! This hotel still uses physical keys and they don't change out locks after each guest leaves. Meaning the last guest could have a key to my room. While in our room, the owns son unlocked our door and attempted to enter my room. He claims he's testing his master key. How unsettling is that? Absolutely recommend this resort. This resort is a little gem! Clean, quaint little spot! Been coming to the keys for many years now and have stayed at many resorts and I find this to be my favorite. Casual chill atmosphere with outdoor adventurous feel. Free kayaks fun little spot to swim, grilling area, hammocks and beautiful view! Nice big rooms in suite and family friendly! We spent 1 night. Our room wasn't ready at 3p (check in is at 4) but they did let us do the paperwork and use the free kayaks for an hour. It was fun to explore the little bay. The room (#5) was large with a kitchenette and living room. It was clean and we had no issues. The property shows signs of aging but is not in disrepair. It's age give the charm of the keys. Down side is the pool closes at sundown or 7:45p. A bit early for my liking. Otherwise a nice overnight. read more

The Rock Reef Resort EXCEEDED our expectations! We chose The Rock Reef from looking online, but didn't know anybody who actually stayed there. So we were a little concerned that maybe the place might not be as nice as it looked online. But we soon learned that this place is a TREASURE! The Suite was gorgeous and clean. Beautifully decorated. Very comfortable bed. Excellent water pressure in the shower. The grounds are amazing. There's an impressive bonsai garden outside, that I learned was taken care of by the owner's late-husband. He loved landscaping and you can see the evidence of that all over the grounds. Linda, the owner, has honored her late-husband by keeping up with his love for the landscaping and keeping the beautiful trees and flowering plants in great shape. You can tell that Linda isn't just running a resort as a job. She LOVES this place and really cares about the people who come through. She spent time with us chatting about everything. Such a sweetheart. Jerry, the Manager, was such a gentleman. He got to know our likes and gave wonderful advice on sites to see. He also gave us fun insights to the local wildlife. They even had the sweetest dog hanging out in the office. Sassy, an 8-year-old Airedale Terrier with nothing but love in her. When I'd visit the office, Sassy often came over to give me snuggles. My wife and I can't rave enough about this place. Beautiful beach and pier too! We'll be back! read more

We spent 4 days here and absolutely loved it. It is a family owned and operated and they bend over backwards to make sure you are happy. They have been remodeling each unit and no two are alike. They put us in one and showed us another unit that had recently been completed and their decorating skills are great. Our unit (18) had a very comfortable dining/living room combo. Take a step up to a fully equipped kitchenette on the right and on the left is a nice sized bathroom with nice toiletries. Next walk into the large bedroom complete with wall mounted TV great for watching TV in bed. The unit was very clean and comfortable and we will definitely be back to Rock Reef Resort. read more

The ladies that we met at the front desk were very helpful and sweet. The resort has a pool, complimentary kayaks, hammocks, a pavilion to have picnics in. They also provide towels for the pool. The pool is open til about 8pm. They request your return the kayaks by dark. Very nice place. They lobby has a bird pretty cool. Don't touch tho...he bites. There is a sign! Absolutely horrible place to stay. They are rude. They are unaccommodating. Pool is off limits at 8pm. No laundry facilities. WAY overpriced. They charge extra per person over 2 guests even in a room with 4 full sized beds and 2 bedrooms. Everything is locked up and you have to get permission to use everything. You are NOT permitted to have any friends on premises. Even if they want to just stop by and say hi. Would not recommend and will never stay here again! Termites and termite damage all over in the room was a nice touch too! Especially since I was supposedly in one of your nicest units. No hot or warm water either. We came from CT for a nice quiet get away in beautiful paradise and that is exactly what we got when came here. We were immediately welcomed by the owner Linda who took time to spend chit chatting with my husband and I. We stayed in a room facing the pool and it was clean and smelled good. We enjoyed everything about the place. Pool was spotless and perfect temperature. We even enjoyed kayaking for our first time. KEYS WEDDING--THE VENUE. This was by far the most expensive and time consuming aspect of the entire affair. I had originally selected a sweet little mom n' pop hotel called "Neptune's Hideaway." After paying deposits on rooms and sharing info with friends and family all around the country, the owners of Neptune's sold the business. And it CLOSED. How do you suppose the owners informed me that I wouldn't be able to have my wedding at Neptune's? If you guessed, "They didn't," you're absolutely right! Picture this: I'm at work one day and a girlfriend calls me up and says, "Are you okay? I heard about the wedding. Do you want to talk about it?" She had received a letter from Neptune's telling her that her reservation was canceled and her credit card would be refunded with no further explanation. I didn't get that letter until about 8 days later. And that was the only notification I received. Phone shut off. Padlock on the gate. So let this be a lesson to you, little missy! If you think you want to have a wedding in the Keys, I hope you've got a rich daddy! Go to one of the big chain hotels, slap down a huge check, and scream, "All I'm gonna do is show up breathless and gorgeous! You guys better do the rest!" And then prepare yourself for the cookie-cutter, sterile, joyless hibiscus and seashell soiree they'll choreograph on your behalf. If you don't have access to that kinda coin, and you think you can plan your own nuptials on a more "modest" budget, you'd better strap on your seat belt. You're gonna be living in a Carl Hiaasen novel for a while, and it ain't gonna be no luxury cruise, sister. So... after crying my eyes out and breathing into a paper bag for about 72 hours, I pulled myself together, rounded up the maid of honor and headed to the Keys to scope out another mom 'n pop hotel that was clean, cheap, quaint, had space for a tent and 100 people, wasn't booked on my date... and, yeah, mission impossible! We stopped at every single independent hotel from Key Largo to about Marathon. When we first checked out Rock Reef, the verdict was, "perfect, but too expensive." By the end of the mission, that was amended to just "perfect." The owners are very professional. They've been in the business for a long time, and they've probably learned the hard way how to protect themselves from the smugglers, gun-runners, pimps, drug dealers and every other possible flavor of sleeze ball that tends to pass through the Keys by boat, motorcycle, motor home and rental car. They will NOT cut you a break on the cost. Believe me, I tried. The cost of the room is the cost of the room, no matter whether you will reserve just one or 20. They charge per car for parking and by the bag for ice. I definitely felt picked on and nickled and dimed by their payment policies. They knew the position I was in and their attitude was "take it or leave it." With that said, the grounds are well-maintained and very attractive. They have an excellent space for a tent. There's even a concrete platform that makes an excellent dance floor. They were nice enough to move around some picnic tables to make space for our group and they hung decorative lights in the trees over the dance floor. They gave me the name of a steel drum player and some other helpful advice. By oldschool Keys standards, the rooms are very nice. They're clean, but the furniture is a bit shabby. It's about what you'd expect from one of the older hotels in the Keys except maybe a little cleaner. They made a big deal of gratuities for the cleaning staff. I was given the option of either paying all the tips in advance or they were going to leave an envelope and an extortion message in every room. Nothing like inviting people on a trip that will cost them a lot of money and then slapping them with a guilt trip for a tip. So, yeah, I paid all the gratuity in advance. As I said, their payment policies will leave you feeling squeezed. All in all, Rock Reef is a great space for a beach wedding with about 100 guests. 120 would probably be the upward maximum. Fewer would be fine. One other note: The hotel next door has a pool and they charge cheaper nightly rates. I did catch some flack from some of our more frugal guests. They couldn't fathom why I wouldn't just choose the cheapest place in town. I guess they wanted to eat dinner in the pool? Anyway, be aware. These are the rooms we reserved for our wedding party. The rest were reserved individually by our guests. 10-Caterer. They used the kitchen in this unit. The steel drum player slept in this unit on Friday night. 9-Groom's room and liquor storage. Men's bathroom. 8-Kids Club. I hired a college kid to come with us and babysit. She had videos and toys in here, so when parents wanted to go out on Friday night or take a break, they could drop kids off here. They also used this restroom during the wedding. 22-Bridal salon. We brought extra mirrors and used this room to get ready. read more

This hotel is perfect! Its nothing fancy but its very quant and relaxing. The staff is very friendly and helpful. We stayed in the hibiscus suite. It was huge! The cabins look great. There is a small beach and a nice dock. They also have a few kayaks to use. I would stay here again in heartbeat!! read more

You can't beat the amenities for the price of a stay here! The bay water is flat, calm, and natural. Free kayak rentals to guests (although one-person kayaks), clean swimming pool with pool shower, bbq grills, chickees to chill under, quiet and calm space, hammocks to relax in, clean rooms with hot water shower, a flat TV, mini fridge, coffee maker, blow dryer, ironing board and iron, clean sheets, short drive from Miami, and across the street from a delicious restaurant that gives guest a 10% discount. If you just wanted to kayak, swim in the ocean, relax on a hammock, swim in a pool, or chill under a chickee, this is the place to do it. Avoid crowds and sample the food in the Florida Keys. Had a reservation to stay here over Holiday weekend however due to a named Tropical storm postponed our trip. Although I understand the no refund policy due to "weather", I do not understand not being able to transfer the deposit to another weekend. Along with the fact that it was a tropical system and the Keys were just devastated a year ago. They have now lost a new customer who visits the Keys every year. Had a wonderful stay here from 8-12-2016 thru 8-14-2016! Our first time here; what a great find! Just me & hubby, in a standard queen, garden/pool view room. There's a nice, relaxing private beach on the bay water which was also great for snorkeling. There's a nice pool but we didn't use it - more fun snorkeling off the beach! This is also a perfect spot for sunsets. Enjoyed the relaxing hammocks, too. Free rental for kayak or a pedal boat. The owner & her family are very nice people. Just an FYI, it's iguana "heaven" on the property and there's LOTS of them. Please know that iguanas are not a native Florida species and they are overrunning just about everywhere in South Florida. These critters used to be "somebody's" pet and were let loose by their former pet owner. They're not dangerous; they're very skittish. We will definitely return to Rock Reef Resort! read more

Don't be fooled by other people's reviews. We came to this "resort" expecting to have a beautiful water front, in which we could swim. Yes, there is water. But someone would have to pay me their yearly salary before I even thought about swimming in it. It is filled with Algae and other questionable things. There are kayaks and a pool which are in horrible condition. The wifi barely works and the hotel is sketchy as a whole. HOWEVER, this hotel did do its job. It provided us with a place to stay comfortable for a family of five. Would I stay here ever again? No way. read more

Had a wonderful stay here over Christmas; lovely, quaint laid back accommodations, a welcome change from the nameless soul-less resort chains that abound in the keys. The owners manage the property themselves, and were attentive throughout our stay. It's wonderful to unwind on a deckchair overlooking the harbor, to the sounds of the wind rustling in the palms and the lapping of the waves. The units have kitchenettes, and the nearby Wyn-Dixie has most everything you'd need to cook up a good seafood dinner which you can then enjoy in the peace of the tranquil surroundings. Only downside - some millipedes shared our room with us, but that's not much of an issue for someone used to the tropics (millipedes are harmless compared to some of the other tropical denizens I've encountered earlier!). Our biggest beef was the room. It was dingy and things were just not well thought out. We are a family of 5 so we got a 2 bedroom suite with 4 beds. The tub was stained badly in 2 spots and the drain became clogged after the second day. There was only ONE towel rack in the entire room! We were constantly struggling to find a place to hang all our wet towels and bathing suits. There was lots of room on the wall for another towel rack--why not add another?? My husband went to take a shower one evening and the water wouldn't come on. I was just about to go down to the office to ask what was going on when it suddenly sprang to life, but the water was ice cold! Better than nothing I guess. There was a light fixture over the sink in the kitchenette area that didn't work. It's not like there was a bulb out--there was simply no switch to turn it on or a cord to plug it in. What's the point!? The kitchenette had a small fridge, microwave and a coffee maker BUT only two outlets. You had to unplug something in order to make coffee in the morning...either that or make coffee in the bathroom. The resort property was adequate, but the beach was very small. After taking the paddle boat out to look at the adjoining resorts I felt that we were getting second best. read more
