I've been coming to the Pelican for lobster season for quite a few years. My husband actually has even more history here--he used to come when he was younger and later returned with a buddy to sell a boat. Back then, before COVID, the property had large tiki huts on the dock, and they even served breakfast in the mornings. After COVID, things seemed to go downhill. During our last trip to the Keys, we actually chose not to stay here because it just wasn't the same. This year, though, we decided to give it another chance, and I'm glad we did. You can definitely tell they've invested a lot of money into improving the property. In previous years, the air conditioners were so weak that we actually packed multiple fans every trip just to stay comfortable. This time, the air conditioning worked great and kept the room nice and cool. That alone made a huge difference in our stay. Another big improvement is the dock. For years, there was a large hole where the old tiki hut used to be, making that area feel unfinished. After more than six years, they've finally repaired the dock. While I do miss the tiki hut, it's nice to see the space usable again. There were also several smaller updates around the property that didn't go unnoticed. Overall, I'm really happy with the improvements. This visit completely changed my opinion, and we'll definitely be staying here again. The only thing I still wish they had is a pool, but that's a minor inconvenience--we usually just head elsewhere for a day pass when we want to swim. It's great to see this place heading in the right direction, and I'm looking forward to returning next lobster season. read more

We stayed here for one night on our trip to Key West. We arrived late and left early, so can't say a lot about the resort itself. The rooms we had were very small but clean and that's what counts. Overall we felt very welcomed. Why only 4 stars? The AC was far too loud, basically no sleep possible with having it running. They also offer free Kajaks, but we didn't use them. This is a NO NO No stay, do not fall for any of the five star reviews. This place is not charming but it is a group of shacks. There is no peace and quiet, there is no deal as you are paying premium for a broke down non-maintenance "lack of charm" roach infested shack. The beach is dirty and the lack of control of other guests by the staff puts your safety at risk. The local police have one solution, kick both parties who have a squabble out and the manager goes along with that and keeps your money. LET'S ELABORATE: THERE ARE MUCH BETTER ACCOMODATIONS PROVIDERS IN KEY LARGO: This place is a cash grab; in all the reviews I read they offer no refunds for the most extreme circumstances. Once you give them your card number they take and will not refund for any reason. They kicked me out because I expected a quiet clean beach side experience for my thousand dollars and I got a drunk new York lady with a radio and a loud kid that kept yelling "Hey Ma". I was in the waterside unit so there was no escape from this noise. Even going inside was no good as the windows are single pane flimsy awning / jalousie style windows from the 1950's. I stayed here at least five times and fooled myself as I enjoyed the what used to be silent clean beach. The beach used to be clean and quiet. After all you do not check into this property for the room quality or maintained facility or services or amenities as there are none. You stay here for the quiet beach and the view, to swim in salt water. ROACHES AND FUMIGATION CHEMICALS: Upon arrival for this visit there was a cabin unit that was tented with signs of poisonous chemicals. The cabin was un-tented the second day and being readied to rent. We commented if it were roaches or rats that was the reason for the tent and later discovered that it was most likely roaches. I will elaborate later in this review. WORN, SMELLY, DATED FURNISHINGS: When we checked in we noticed that the unit had very few updates since our last visit a year ago. There was a large dining table with glass top and beneath the glass was a display of shells and tropical life. This visit revealed that the glass and shells were gone, and a piece of some sort of white board glued on top to cover what must have been broken glass. The makeshift repair is signature for this place. A person does not stay here for the room quality, does not stay here for the cleanliness and does not stay here for any other reason than the once silent clean peaceful beach that is now noisy and full of cigarette butts and bear bottle caps. The unit does have newer cabinets, stove, sink and refrigerator. GARBAGE IN THE BAY WATER, FISHING HOOKS EVERYWHERE: The bay where one swims has three discarded tires from a car or trailer or some sort of vehicle. These rubber tires are covered with sea growth indicating that they have been there for some time. I picked many pieces of garbage out of the water, broken sunglasses, mask trim pieces, metal shards, many fishing hooks and weights with fishing line attached, cigarette butts, etc. Its like swimming at Sanford and Sons. RUDE NOISY GUESTS: Upon this visit there was a lady and her kids on the beach yelling back and forth with each other. The lady had a radio that she kept turning up to full volume. It was very annoying to say the least as she was right outside of our door and living room windows and was heard inside the unit. At one point the radio was turned down so I went outside to enjoy the beach and she quickly turned the radio up to full volume. I told her the radio was better before she turned the volume to full level. I explained taht this is a public space and the radio was unbearable to most guest who were seeking a peaceful stay. The lady ended up being drunk and started spouting profanity and nastiness at me. She called me slurs, after hearing this several times I returned by calling her a nasty name. She got on her phone and called someone and was talking loudly saying she was "going to need bail money" because she was "going to shoot me" and "if I have one more drink I'm going to go up there and punch him in the face." She had got on her phone earlier and done similar loud talk when my friends were out there and they went inside. I called the desk and the clerk came out and tried to speak to the lady yet the clerk came to me and told me "I have done all I can do, I spoke to her and told her the beach is meant to be quiet, but I do not think she will be quiet as she is obviously drunk." She further indicated that she would stay at the side of the building for a bit to make sure things do not get worse. I asked what she wanted me to do if the noise and threats continued and she advised that I call the police. This woman continued her karen behavior and then I called the police. The police said they spoke to all beach goers and the heard me yelling at the woman. They said the manager was kicking both parties out and that we needed to pack and leave. read more

We received great service. They gave us coupons to some of the near by restaurants. Our cottage was cute and clean and looks like the bathroom was new, the shower was a beautiful ocean color tile and big! Our bed faced the windows to a view of the water with sailboats in the distance, beautiful to see laying in bed, didn't need the TV on, hahhaha. They offer free kayaks to use, they give you 2 hours to explore, we seen stingrays which was awesome. Very pretty place, sat on the dock with a drink and watched the sunset. read more

Cute property. We didn't stay long. We checked in late at night, and checked out early in the morning. So I didn't really get a chance to explore all that they had to offer. The room was really tiny. Just a bed and a bathroom. Which I guess was all that you need? We weren't mad about that. My problem was more so the air-conditioning. There's a window unit on the wall. It was very noisy. It also was continuously kicking on and off. So you couldn't fall asleep because it was making so much noise turning on and off the whole night. Finally I turned it on "fan only" so it was a continuous noise. Within about an hour the whole room was so humid I was soaking wet.... an impossible situation. read more

Pros - it's in Key Largo and has access to the water and kayaks. Room was clean and appeared recently updated. Cons - room had an overwhelming odor of some perfumed cleaner. The free breakfast was packaged pastries, cereals, and juice/coffee. Please don't advertise that you offer breakfast when you're providing little more than a cheap snack. In our room, the "hibiscus", the air conditioner unit was positioned directly over one bed in a window. It ran off and on all night and was loud as heck. It didn't keep the room cool despite setting it to 70 degrees F. There has to be a better place to stay in Key Largo - this just doesn't cut it at the price we paid for one night ($200). read more

I truly don't understand any bad review that's been left here. We booked a last minute trip for 4th of July weekend, which I realize would be normally packed and crazy. These hidden cottages are the opposite. Quiet, conveniently located, not crowded, friendly/efficient staff, and tons of space is what we found. Unadvertised up charge to park my motorcycle trailer. Check in took 30 minutes even though I was the only customer. Mix of preference for handling phone calls and pitching local "partnered" restaurants instead of getting me in and out. Room smelled strongly of "air freshener". Not cabins at all - SMALL duplexes and quads. Parking is abysmal. With tax and all cost me almost $300 a night - I could get a real luxury room for that kind of Jack. Would not recommend. This is an amazing place to stay if you really want a relaxing key largo get away with a homey feel to it! On our recent trip to Miami we decided to take a few days to relax in the Keys. I did my research and found these cottages tucked away in Key Largo. Which only a handful of cottages and a private beach, this was what I was looking for. We rented the SailAway Suite with a private beach, back patio with bar and dock. It's a perfect place for a couple or a family. It's 1 queen been with a pullout couch, full fridge and a 2 burner electric skillet. The dock had a daybed to lay out at the end of it! The property was so amazing we decided to head to the local store and grab a few things to grill on Weber grills proved. Kayaks were provided for a 2 hour period. We took advantage for that and did an evening/sunset tour. The only reason I can not give 5 stars, is because it is a little dated as far decor, furnishings and electrics. 5 stars for property, private beach, staff and relaxation. For what we paid, I give it 4 stars. Very charming and affordable with good location. We got the cheapest room (queen bed near office) for $109. After reading bad reviews we were pleasantly surprised. First the good: really super cute property right on water walking distance to great bars and restaurants. The buildings all look like little colorful cottages. Nice dock and "beach" area. Check in was pleasant. The rates are good. The bad: room was tiny. Like New York City tiny. Not many amenities as far as comfort in bathroom or space for make up etc. And although everything was clean, there was hair (for sure not ours since it was long and black) all over the bathroom floor. With all that being said, I would stay here again if I need something in the area but probably not more than a couple of nights. read more

I'm marking 1 star so I can write this review. My friend and I rented online and once we arrived the nightmare started. It was not waterfront as reserved we had to long walk to the little 4/4 one side water lagoon like site. The guy could not make a simple decision as of giving us what we reserved and paid for, he had "to call" the owner?? Anyway they said too bad screw you kind of way. So we wanted to cancel and he said..no can do.. NO refund and that was that. Parking is ridiculous. The pee smell in the room and mold sense like The old furniture. The old ac units. The nasty gravel. Aaghhh misery all along. The maintenance crew was the only highlight of the 3 day stay there. This place looks like something out of a 60's/70's surf movie. There are few things I love more than that decade of surf movies, so I was immediately smitten. It's a Bruce Brown film made into a little camp of palm trees and cottages. We were checked in by a cute hippie and sent to our tiny room that we reserved ahead of time called "The Banana Room" which I know sounds like a male strip club private suite, but I really like bananas...and dick, soooo.... Now when I say this room was "tiny" I mean that I could have folded it up and put it in my pocket. It was like 10x6...you know, the size of the large unit at Public Storage? Well this room would have fit inside it...with room to spare. I both hated and loved it. The actual property was beautiful. Right on the water, hammocks and kayaks (free for guests to use) and lots of places to sit and relax. We were able to walk to a bar down the way and dinner from here, but in general, there isn't much around this part of Key Largo. We bought a bottle of champagne at the CVS across the street and enjoyed it while we watched the sunset from one of the tables over the water...absolutely perfect. They have serve-yourself breakfast in the mornings in the little kitchen and it was superrrrr cute (just basic continental breakfast crap, but the kitchen and dining areas were adorable). I would stay here again I think, but I would probably book a bigger room and would again only stay for one night. It's the perfect place when you need a vacation from your vacation. Great place to stay in the Keys! The rooms and beachfront are very clean and quiet, staff are friendly, and good vibes abound. Breakfast was disappointing -- sliced bread, cereal and packaged sweets, no fruit or protein, with lots of styrofoam -- but supermarkets are nearby to stock your fridge. There are both single and double kayaks to take out on the water, all of which seemed to be in decent shape. Water along the beach is perfect for wading or swimming, or just dipping your feet and watching the tiny fish swim around them. Check-out is a little early (11am) but you can stay later and enjoy the beach; there's a shower and bathroom near the breakfast area and the whole place is pretty empty between 10am and 3pm. read more

We really shopped around for a budget friendly place to stay and I highly recommend this place if you're ever in Key Largo. It's really cute and the least expensive place I could find during spring break season. It's an unbelievable deal! Plus the kayak rentals are free for hotel guests! And of course they have their own little beach and docks... it's a total steal! We are loving it! We are staying in a suite with two rooms and it's super nice with an amazing view. But this whole place is really tiny and cute. The staff are super friendly. Only complaint was there wasn't much soap in the room when we got here, but I bet if I go ask for more they would be happy to give it to me. They are very accommodating! read more

The motel or room was definitely not as described. I thought I was getting an actual room not a 5 by 10 room that I had to duck my head to get into the room and bathroom. Will never go back to that place. Paid $172 and could of went to a comfort inn for $120. Did not appreciate the host either. I knew not to expect much here but it had a place to dock our wave runners and didn't want to spend a ton of money. But I didn't expect to meet the WORST PROPERTY OWNER - EVER. RUDE as can be- him and his Russian GF. We booked a 2 bedroom room w a sofa bed and a Murphy bed for $179 per night - Super cheap. EXCEPT- they don't mention they charge an additional $10.00 pp per day, plus $15 for their car. He wanted to charge me $250 for my emotional needs dog when I have stayed at Hyatt's, Holiday inns, intercontinental, etc w NO PROBLEM AND NO FEE! Standing water in the sink. Stained sofas, hardly enough cooking supplies. Broken and torn lounge chairs. DISGUSTING. HE FOLLOWED US TO OUR ROOM TWICE AND HARASSED US W A BODY GUARD/SAD EMPLOYEE, standing by the door for a key and to remind me how he made an exception about the dog. There is a fee for everything. And "RULES" for anything. I felt like I was waking in to my principals office in trouble there. AWFUL!!!!! I can over look some things but not this guy. YOU ARE THE WORST. it's a shame cuz the property has some potential. But you will never realize it because you are a dirty and dishonest man. I feel sorry for your employees. PS: ended up admitted to the hospital Saturday night- it was either red tide or the ppl you had fishing there w chum and dead bait. Aren't there health code laws you should be following w Dead Sea life releasing toxins near swimmers?!?!? I'll be contacting Monroe county to file a complaint. The motel was fabulous. It was retro on the outside and completely updated on the inside. Several places within walking distance to eat. The only thing I felt could be changed was the table and chairs. They were outdoor furniture and a bit uncomfortable. With that being said they worked. We will definitely be back to this little gem! We enjoyed sitting on the docks and watching the sunset and were happy to see the stingrays and manatees! Very enjoyable! read more

Pretty cool cottages that were probably built in the 1950's. Staff was great and they have kayaks that you can use. Easy snorkeling off of the docks and great location. The rooms are a little tired but they were updating while we were there. I think we will be back. read more

Salt water crocodiles at their docks! At check in we were told they had been notified and someone was coming to remove them. I shared my concerns, because of caution tape at the beach and signs, and they assured us they would be removed. We saw one of them in the evening at our dock, and then today we saw two again. They are approximately 5-7ft long. We asked to checkout at 9am morning, and get a refund for our additional stay. They told us they were unable to do that. So we sit at our beach side room, which is quaint, but has a nice view. So we will enjoy the water with our three young children elsewhere, and come back to our room to sleep. Not how we expected to spend our Christmas. We didn't ask for something free, just a refund for our unused stay. Unfortunately I can not recommend this place to others. read more

Great stay! The staff was friendly from the point of booking our stay all the way to our last day. Great feel. Older cottages, but just the right amount of space. Our room was a little moldy smelling when we arrived (which after staying in the Keys at different hotels, I guess is normal for the area), but once we mentioned it, the hotel was quick to find a solution to the problem. By the time we got back to our room the 2nd night the smell was pretty much gone. Loved the property. Lots of places to hang out and enjoy the great weather, sunset on the dock each night was beautiful! It beat dealing with the crowds at Mallory Square in Key West. The property has BBQ grills at almost all the cottages and it made for a great chill evening. The property is super quiet! You're near the highway, but you can't hear it at all. Lots of food options near by and excellent recommendations from the staff for places to go. Will certainly add it to my list of places to revisit. We didn't want to leave! read more

The location is dynamite, so is the service and hospitality. The landscape is beautiful, it is a fisherman's paradise. However, for the money, it needs much improvement. The furniture is very old, but super soft. Distressed particle wood cabinets in kitchen and the bathroom tile is moldy, needs a deep cleaning. Overall the unit was cleaned, but not good enough. There are 34 units on the property, each earning over $300 a night - that's over 300k a month. They can afford to update and clean. read more

This Motel is a total ripoff . I made a reservation and they told me I had to cancel it in 72 hours. When my travel companion became ill ( Yes during Covid-19) I called them within 72 hours and they said sorry you have to pay for it . We meant 3 days not 72 hours. When I called back still with in 72 hours and said that the kids and I would come without their Father they said they didn't have the room available any more. they charged me $167 and would not honor the refund even in the time frame they stated on the phone and the rented the room so they collected twice on it. And went we went to Key Largo and stayed at much nicer spot on the water for less money- we drove into the Pelican and saw that it had become quite dumpy. From the moment got to Key Largo, we felt welcomed and the Pelican was the perfect balance of relaxation and activity for our four night stay there. We popped into the water from the hotel dock using one of the kayaks they have to explore the mangroves in the bay and saw a manatee. We watched the sunset from the beach hammock. We walked two doors over to Mrs. Macs for delicious breakfasts and dinners and just down the road to a dive shop to go snorkel one afternoon. By far the cheapest place we found for lodging in the keys, it nonetheless comes with a lot of great free extras like a library of DVDs to borrow, grills, water crafts, bikes and lots of little areas to relax in on your tropical vacation. Most things you would need (pharmacy, food, water gear, liquor) are walking distance away. The rooms are clean and nice. We stayed in the tiniest room, Heliconia, our first two nights and it exceeded my expectations. It's small but there's room to move and there's AC, fridge and microwave. Mermaid was a great room for our other two night and a little plain but very comfortable. My only complaint about the Pelican would be that the free breakfast is not so great (bagged pastries and sunny d) and they only do it until 9:30 am (I'm on vacation!) but considering all the other great stuff included I can't even really complain. Stay here, you won't regret it. I'll be back for sure next time I'm in the keys. read more

What a disappointment! Came to this hotel to stay for mini lobster season only to be disappointed in the whole experience. First of all we had a late check-in all I wanted was to just take a nice hot shower after our drive in. As I turned on the shower and turned it all the way to Hot let it run for about a good five minutes the hot water never turned on I ended up having to take an ice cold shower. When I first initially walked into the room I noticed there was this stagnant smell of a cheap dollar store cleaning supply that was used in the room but of course was hidden with the AC being turned all the way to 60 and with the AC there was also a slight mold smell like it has been turned off and had started to have the condensation buildup. The room was so extremely small the bed was not comfortable at all nor the pillows when you laid in the bed there's some sort of frame on the bottom that every time You got onto the bed it sounded like a drum roll which is very annoying so anytime I moved while sleeping I also kept hearing the noise the walls are so thin that I can hear the neighbors next-door opening and closing drawers I can hear the full conversation and anything that was going on my two nights at this hotel was miserable I went to the front office the very next morning and told them about the hot water not working. All the front desk person said was I'll let management know I said well I feel like I should have received somewhat of a discount considering I couldn't even take a shower to my liking and I had to take a nice cold shower plus there was small little bugs that were flying around in the room and I even express that to them and again I got the I'll let management know. So if you're considering coming to this so-called cottage of a hotel I would recommend you go stay in a house boat at least you'll be more comfortable you would have better space because in reality This was one of the worst experiences that I've ever had in the keys and I frequent there often so beware read more

My boyfriend and I stayed here over Valentines Day weekend and were quite pleased when we pulled up. Very tropical, well maintained grounds, and hidden from the main road. We were really looking forward to our stay, but were not entirely pleased with our room. We stayed in The Conch. This place really had the potential to be quaint and cozy but with a few faults like the plastic on the lamp shade, plastic-type comforter, the window pain on the door popped off a few times, bare walls, an unknown odor, etc..not to mention it was a very small room. The room consisted of a bed with an armoire/TV, and mini fridge. It really needed a fresh coat of paint and new bedding. Bathroom was clean. I loved the character of the grounds and I would stay again, but I would spend the money to stay in a bigger cottage with the water view. read more

This is definitely the worst motel hotel whatever it is that I have ever stayed at. Lady in the front had the most disgusting attitude I had ever seen. Definitely hates her job and takes it out on the guests lol. Beds had bugs in them, AC does NOT work at all just makes a loud noise the whole night. This place is the worst! The only reason I gave it one star is because the girl who checked us in was very nice and it's not her fault the place is a dump! DON'T waste your money! The place is trailer trash. Ants all over inside, doors that don't close tight, plastic on the nasty mattresses that crackled all night every time you moved. The light in the bathroom had 2 old bulbs with a pull chain over the sink I could hardly reach. One bulb was burned out, the other buzzed then dimly lit. I swear we thought it would catch on fire. It's a GREAT LOCATION and despite how small the bathroom is it didn't get very humid or hot after a shower. The beds are not queen sized bed (they're full sized which is not comfortable for 2 adults) if you stay in a 2 bed room. A microwave and fridge is provided and all in all there's not much to complain about. All I can say is that it could of been bigger. Oh lastly they hardly have any power outlets. read more

We have been repeat guests for almost 10 years now, having spent thousands of dollars over the years supporting this business. Last night was our last visit. The room was full of large ants that we noticed as soon as we walked in. By the next morning we had to shake out all of our clothes. When we told the front desk the only response was "we will tell the owners", with no accommodations or problem solving action made. The the only response I have heard in reply to this issue from owners/managers is an accusation that we are lying about the ants. Not only do we have photo proof, there are other reviews stating the same experience from other guests. Side note: They still use styrofoam to serve their coffee in the morning. When we suggested they switch to a paper cup alternative the response we received was condescending and rude. There was a comment also made that it was too expensive for them. This was the last straw for us. The least a business by the ocean can do is not use styrofoam, or at least be open to suggestions from concerned citizens. There is no way a business charging as much as they do cannot afford a few cents extra to spring for paper cups in the name of protecting the main asset that is the reason they have so many customers. The customers are there for the ocean and the beautiful nature - Have some respect for it. If I could give less than one star I would. Update: After writing a google review about our experience we received an email that we were being charged for two towels missing. The towels were left outside our room. When we called to tell them this their reply was that another guest could have stolen them and in that case it was still our responsibility to pay for them. We are in a complete shock that such a horrible experience could get worse and that they are now trying to steal from us. It is our duty as citizens who care to give information to the public.That is the reason customers have an outlet like yelp to have a voice against places that try to take advantage of their customers. If that hurts the business' reputation then it is well deserved. read more
