I was going to be in Salem for a ghost tour, which was also right around the corner from this eatery. I ordered fish and chips, French onion soup and the poison apple - fish and chips: a large chunk of fish with ample fries, this plate is definitely big enough to share. Delicious. - onion soup - perfectly seasoned with lots of cheese and bread, a treat on a cold day. - poison apple - loved this mix! The bartender made it without alcohol and I had two glasses. I was surprised at the price $10 / glass because usually I get charged a lot less for virgin drinks! Great place! We stopped in and during the month of October, which is always hectic and crowded in Salem. We were able to get seated within 10 minutes which we were pleasantly surprised, a table back in the back corner, which was fine, but our poor server was attending to way too many tables. Water refills took forever, our food arrived warm because I think she was unable to run from kitchen to tables in reasonable time. Would I go there again? Probably to the bar for a cocktail but not for dinner. Food was OK and like I said, our server did her best, but management needs to hire a couple more people. read more

This place was really good a couple of years ago, but sadly this time around it was pretty bad. I came here a couple of days ago for dinner and was not impressed by the service or the food. The server we had had a bit of an attitude and was not very pleasant towards us. We ordered the pulled pork sliders for an appetizer, and they were absolutely terrible. Barry sloppily prepared, wet sandwiches with the buns, dissolving flavorless meat plopping out of it with blend coleslaw. Very gross and this either needs to be improved or taken off the menu completely. My friend really enjoyed the Portobello tower years ago, but that was not on the menu anymore so instead we both had the baked macaroni and cheese. This was my favorite dish and what I would be so eager to try every time I came here the years I would visit Salem. This dish came out in less than three minutes, and it was bland had no flavor whatsoever and truthfully, no love was put into it at all. I don't know what is going on with this place but management really needs to either get another chef or change menu items. No effort or care was put into these dishes whatsoever and it will be a while before I decide to come back here. read more

We paid $50 extra to reserve The Vault private seating. This was our engagement celebration and we could not have been more disappointed in the overall experience and lack of value. We had a 930pm reservation that was available online for the vault (that again, you must pay in advance to reserve and it does NOT come off your check, it is an extra fee) with no notice informing you that the kitchen closes at 10pm. We were totally okay with the fee but not knowing we could not get food after 10pm and having a server with a nasty attitude ruined everything. Joshua F. was our server and he did not greet us until at least 10 minutes after being seated. Normally, we have no issues with things like this, especially during a busy time, but it was obvious he just did not care. We watched him receive our paper stub and talk with the hostess, who informed him we were his table. We watched him get drinks and take food orders for a table in his section that was not seated until after us. He walked passed our table, made eye contact numerous times and still did not come in to even greet us and take the opportunity to say "I will be right back with you". When he did finally appear, he was not apologetic and immediately told us we only had 20 minutes to get in our food order. Leaving us to wonder why a reservation that we had to pay $50 for would not disclose this to you, and if he knew this why he took as long as possible to come greet our table. We had hoped for drinks, appetizers, entrees, and dessert. Which isn't enjoyable at all in a 20 minute time frame. Even just dinner, would be rushed in 20 minutes for most people much less people celebrating a special occasion. Overall, this was a terrible experience and not worth their high price tag. $210 including the reservation fee, pre tip. read more

Spent a week in Salem for Halloween and this is one of three places we visited more than once. Food was good not great hence the four-star rating and the service was quick. The ambiance of Halloween is all over the place here and there is some lore of hauntings at this establishment, but no ghost bothered me while I was eating. While the service was quick, we never felt rushed even though they were very busy. This is probably one of the higher end places in Salem, at least that we could find and I feel was reasonably priced considering the time of year and the grade/quality of the food. If your looking for a nice place to sit and enjoy a decent meal, you have found it. read more

Super good! I know its in a touristy area but you do not get that vibe at all once inside. I love their interior design, outdoor seating is available as well. I loved their fall sangria and Halloween decorations! We appreciated the hostess who allowed us to get seated to a table after getting out of line when told there were bar seats available, which there were not. Our order apparently got sent to another table so we waited quite a bit for it and once it did come out, it was an ok dish. It was much "runnier" or watered down than traditional artichoke dip and not sure if that's standard or because they rushed it out after we waited. Flavor was ok, not the best but not the worst by any means either.. would give it a 3 out of 5 stars. Overall.. the patio area is nice, but (at least during October) there was a line for that seating. Our first night out in Boston, MA, we decided, let's go to Salem and try something different. We went to Rockafellas because we absolutely loved the vibe and ambiance. What we ordered was fine, but the service wasn't!! First we ordered our drinks along with two waters, but two couples that arrived AFTER us, received their waters and our waiter, Giuseppe didn't even remember our waters. He didn't realize until AFTER we received our food and drinks to ask how everything was going until we let him know we never got our waters to bring our water, yet never asked if I wanted a refill on my raspberry iced tea. We had our appetizer brought to us but with a backhanded comment because we didn't recognize it at first, the comment being, "well you don't look Mediterranean". I'm not sure if the comment was necessary. Overall, nice meal, bad service, being our first time, makes it hard to want to come back again. read more

As promised, hubs and I returned on Saturday night. Originally just for drinks, but we ended up getting a couple of snacks as well. Drinks: super refreshing and interesting! Food: Memphis wings and hummus platter. The wings were tender and juicy, fried to perfection, and had a yummy bbq sauce. A bit on the sweet side for me, but with a few crushed red pepper flakes, awesome! Hummus was great, and I loved the added veg for dipping! This eatery is housed in a historic building near Downtown, Salem. The entire town is walkable, and this area is so very cute to check out. The host seemed s little nervous, but sat us down quickly with no wait. The weather was gorgeous so we dined on their patio. A homeless women did bother some of the patrons, and the host simply allowed her to walk in, use the restroom to proceed and ask for money from patrons. The service was friendly and their manager also welcomed us. The food was pretty good and tasty. Would love to be able to rate the food, except no one ever came to our table. I've been going to Salem monthly for years. Something always told me not to go to Rockefellas, and today, I learned why. We walked in and the hostess could not even be bothered to smile. She seemed like she was annoyed by our very existence for some reason. She was impersonal, rude, and slow. We sat waiting for someone to acknowledge us for 20 minutes and there was maybe a max of 10 tables with people sat in the entire restaurant, so it's not like it was busy nor were they understaffed. When a couple was seated and then instantly greeted by their server, we decided to leave. We told the hostess to tell our would-be server that we were tired of waiting, the hostess said, "That's fine" in an unapologetic, passive-aggressive manner. Wow. Sorry to say but this restaurant is very overpriced and the food is very inconsistent !! My wife got the pickled chicken sandwich and the bread was soaked in grease and I got the fish tacos and one taco had a piece of fish the size of a half dollar ant the others was doused in sauce inside and out !! My husband and I visited Rockafella's in Sept 2014 and again Sept 2024. We took the train from Boston and arrived in Salem around 11AM on a Saturday. The restaurant did not open until 11:30 AM, however, due to the rain and it being a busy day in Salem - a line formed around 11AM. Once inside, we were greeted warmly and brought to a table and promptly had our water filled and a waiter came quickly to take our order. Despite the mad rush once they opened and literally filled every table within 30 minutes - the staff remained SUPER friendly and the food came out quickly. Everything we had was a hit - and would recommend: clam chowder, crab cakes (get extra aioli, so good!), pickle chicken sando, burgers, and the kids tenders. Since we went in September, they were already decked out for Halloween - which we loved. But FAIR WARNING their decor isn't for everyone. There were a lot of creepy things like zombie babies, decapitated heads and limbs, ect. We dont mind that type of macabre so we thought it was fun. They also have an amazing Halloween themed drink menu and lots of pumpkin beer. SO cool. We had a great experience and said we should go back for dinner if we stayed in town. Came here to Rockafellas for lunch after it was mentioned in a Salem hauntings & history tour I took with friends! We had no reservations (not sure if they take reservations or not) but we were sat almost instantly with a party of 6. The location is perfect with it being off Essex street and very central to all the Salem attractions. One great thing here were the prices. This was definitely a cheaper restaurant with most cocktails being around $12 and apps and meals were (usually) under $25. This restaurant is big! There was so much indoor and outdoor space. The bathroom is tiny and has only 2 stalls so there was a line forming for it. Our server was nice but it was definitely a tad slower service and some things were forgotten (a soup and our sides of sauces). The food was actually really good. I got the crab cakes which were one of the best crab cakes I've ever had. The sauce with it was spicy and gave it a bit of a kick. The clam chowder was good but I had more flavorful chowders at other places throughout my trip in Massachusetts. My friends got the crab cake BLT and really liked it. My other friend got their veggie burger and said it was flavorful! The cocktails were unique and I definitely recommend the Salem Witch cocktail. I'd be open to coming here again if ever in Salem, but I'd probably try another restaurant first. Overall, I had a good experience at Rockafellas! read more

The interior is very interesting.... the building was remodeled into a restaurant with a strange layout. I was seated in the large bar area. Sue, Server, had greeted me took my drink order. By the time, she returned, I was ready to order the Fish & Chips. The menu offered a wide variety of options. Within a few minutes, the meal was dropped off. Sue had checked in with me couple of times. The fish was meaty and crunchy while the fries were well seasoned. There is a large patio, however, due to the cooler temperature and the occasional high winds, this area was pretty much closed. Overall, a great restaurant and service. Went here mid October during a girls trip to Salem. Even though Salem was a little busy we were able to get a table in under 30 minutes. I got a pumpkin cider that had caramel on the rim and it was amazing. We were waiting for our evening tour at Salem and this was one of the places that were still open. We were only here for drinks, but they also serve other dishes, mainly American food. The atmosphere does emulate a traditional American bar and lounge area. Some folks were seated by the bar stools and watched sports, while my friend and I sat at a table and chatted while we wait for our tour. Surprisingly this type of restaurant/bar was quite rare because many of the other businesses in the area were themed or closed really early. Their menu here has some cool, themed names but they pretty much look like any other cocktails. The server was friendly and quick with our orders. As I said, we only got drinks here. I forgot what my friends ordered, but they thought the drinks were just okay. On the other hand, mine was delicious. I ordered the Butterbeer which highly resembled the butterbeer you'd get at Universal Studios' Harry Potter world! My friends got a taste of my drink and they thought that it was good as well. We got the fish tacos and the chicken caesar wrap and the truffle fries.Yhe fries were probably the best of the what we got. The tacos were a good size but I didn't love the guacamole in it and it was also not very good guacamole at that. The wrap was also just ok I didn't like the croutons in it because they were just soggy and it didn't work in the wrap. Rockafella doesn't take reservations for the month of October. Which makes sense because it is an absolute MOB SCENE !! That being said they made a very special exception to the rule on account of my boyfriend calling them the week before our engagement (october 1st). He spoke to a manager named Sue ! She was very helpful and I cannot express the gratitude I have for her accommodating our large part of 13 people for our special day. This was the best day of all time. This reservation was so beyond special/ an amazing surprise to follow my engagement on the hotel salem roof deck. My fiancés family and my family were all here awaiting our arrival when I thought we were just going in to use the bathroom lol ! This was the first time our families had met and rockafellas made it so fun and festive. The decor in the restaurant is so cool for Halloween time and the food everyone got was great.
