It is *BHM so I decided to visit a locally owned sandwich shop for lunch. Upon entering, I noticed that there were just a few tables inside and a lot of space type memorabilia on the walls as well as some retro kitchy items on the counters and tables. It seemed a little cluttered but fun to look at. The menu is pretty expansive for such a small place but from what we ordered, everything was done well and service was very good. Everything seemed to be made to order. We had the smash burger with just onion so that was easy and simple. Not greasy and easy to eat. The Cuban sandwich though not served on traditional Cuban bread was nicely pressed with a good flavor of ingredients. The Cheesesteak was prepared perfectly with meat to cheese ratio. Lastly the Roast beef sandwich on a Kaiser looked amazing except the meat was not tender and very chewy when eaten. That is the only thing that wasn't great. The tatertots and onion rings were not homemade but they were crispy and fried well in what they posted as cooked in tallow and not random oil. There were a variety of sodas and other beverages. They seem to do a nice breakfast business from the neighborhood locals and I would definitely come back to try other menu items. We were the only patrons to start and as the early cold air warmed up, some more Floridians showed up for a hot cup of coffee or cup of tea. All the food came out hot from the kitchen. This was a great experience that I hope to repeat often as we explore more of their menu. It's a small family type restaurant with close tables and an extensive menu with reasonable prices. We had a wait for an open table and now we know why. As we waited, one of the regulars told us that they are happy to customize items so don't be afraid to ask. In addition to the printed menu, there are various features and specials. There are signs on the wall board, too. I decided to order their fried chicken tenders on a bubble waffle. It came without the mentioned powdered sugar, but I just used extra syrup. The chicken was very tasty. The portion was large enough to me to have the leftovers at another meal. My husband ordered the smash burger which came with two patties and toppings. They threw in a small side of fries. He said the meat in the burger was excellent. We got a small vanilla shake to go after seeing sone other folks do the same. I think I'd like to try some of their other drinks. We'd tried their red birch beer but it was a bit under carbonated for my taste. Lots of breakfast options and other diner type meals looked very appealing for a future visit. Can't wait. read more

A truly great lunch at the Rocket Cafe today! Open for Lunch and breakfast, this place has an eclectic menu offering many of your favorites. The prices are really down to earth for what you get too! ( a party of 6 adults and 5 kids were leaving the same time we were and the grandfather paying told his table, anywhere else would have been 5 times for what they had - I saw his tab was $171.00 ...wow!) I enjoyed the Smash Burger with American cheese, raw onion - instead of grilled and their secret sauce and Fries ... SPECTACULAR! This cafe just opened by our home. We ordered three bacon egg and cheese sandwiches. The owners purchase their eggs from local growers. There is plenty of parking and space to sit inside. I'm hoping they stay in business for a while. It's nice to have a cafe so close to our home. The bacon egg and cheese sandwiches were good. I'm a New Yorker so any Bacon Egg and cheese I get here will never compare to a NY sandwich. This one was okay. I'll probably return and try a sandwich for dinner or one of their shakes. Honestly I LOVE this place and the whole concept but the service this time was so off I could not give a good review-last time I came my waitress a spitfire and impressively attended to all 7 tables but this time we waited a ridiculously long time for a waitress to even appear ( I was about to leave and wondered if the poor chef was doubling as waitstaff) and when she did appear she seemed to be moving in slow motion-it took such an unbearable amount of time to get food and drink. My husband and I went there on 12/28 around noon. I ordered a smash burger with mozzarella sticks on it with tator tots and my husband a chicken salad sandwich, coffee and sweet potato fries. I was surprised that my husbands sandwich did not come with a side. His coffee was excellent. My tots were great but I assumed the smash burger would come with tomatoes, pickles, lettuce and more. Very cute place within walking distance of our home. The breakfast food is very good. They make "The Jersey" (Pork roll/egg/cheese so right away I'm happy. Wife's French Toast was very good. All of us happy with reasonably priced menu. My really big coffee mug was great. Need to try lunch/dinner soon. Help a little limited now but very friendly and helpful. So where's the fifth star? Tables are very limited and, I know it's not easy, but need to ask party of 2 to not sit at table for 6. This mostly customer courtesy issue but......? This place is a serious sleeper find. Went there for lunch and got a smash burger. To put it in a word, epic. Exactly how you would want a smash burger to be. Soft, steamed bun. Gooey cheese and an addictive burger sauce. My buddy got the grilled hot dog. He's a hot dog aficionado and said it's one of the best he's ever had. So many other things I want to try here. I truly dislike leaving unfavorable reviews, especially when it contradicts so many other great reviews I decided to share my thoughts for the benefit of the owner (Intended as constructive feedback) and prospective patrons (who deserve balanced, accurate information). I had breakfast with my father here and our experience was terrible. Walking in the door, it was immediately uncomfortable because the kitchen fan was not turned on the entire place smelled like a greasy grill. We stayed because we like to support local businesses and we were already there. After someone asked if there was an exhaust fan, it was turned on but by then my clothes and nose was so full of that smell that I could not wait to leave. We both ordered 2 eggs over medium and they came out covered in dark speckles (looked like pepper but tasted like grill gristle). The bacon was burned (not crispy, but charred... burned) and I was told the home fries would "take a while" (they never came). The person there was all by himself and I hope he was just having a one off bad day. In general he was snarky and passive aggressive. My father and I were polite and kind, limiting any questions or comments to "excuse me, how is our order coming", to which the response was "I am here all by myself", as he gave takeout customers their orders and worked the register. I don't begrudge anyone for being edgy from being overworked, however, when talking with customers its not ok to have attitude. Much better would have been, "gee I am sorry. I know it's taken a while and it will be ready in xx time. I appreciate your patience". I hope my experience was not representative of how they run this place so, if others continue to have positive experiences then by all means listen to them. I'm happy when local business succeed. We decided to stop in and check out this new place in the Lake Charleston plaza, and we're so glad we did! They're in the old MoMo Ave spot, and at the time of this review they haven't changed the sign yet. Our lunch was great and far exceeded any expectations we had! Everything was delicious. We got a tuna salad wrap, a smash burger, a chopped cheese wrap, a basket of fries, a kids Mac and cheese meal, and even some boba teas. We'd definitely order everything again; it was all that good. Everyone in our family agreed that we can't wait to come back again for lunch, but also to try breakfast, and to even come back for ice cream sundaes soon. A great, and much needed addition to the Lake Charleston area. This Father-Daughter run Cafe offers a nice selection of Breakfast (served all day!) Lunch and Ice Cream. It reminds me of a small town breakfast joint from the Northeast. When you walk in your instantly reminded of that "Diner" smell. The service was very warm and friendly. They brewed me a fresh pot of coffee at 5:30 pm! My kids deemed their pancakes "the best pancakes ever!" which hurt my ego just a little. They're open through dinner time Weds-Sun and close at lunchtime on Mon & Tues. I'd call for hours as they are so new I suspect they may fluctuate for a few weeks. I'll be back many times! read more

My husband and I visited for an early lunch today after passing by a number of times since the café opened. I found it curious that the sign for the café has not yet been changed from the previous restaurant but is resting on a bench outside of the storefront, flanked by weathered, life-sized figures of a chef and an astronaut. This was foreshadowing for the eclectic, chaotic state of the interior. I was first overwhelmed by a familiar, mildly unpleasant odor that reminded me of my time working in the kitchen of an assisted living community as a teen--something like the smell of a mop bucket after it had been used to clean a large cafeteria. Jumbo-sized menus and TVs occupy an alarming fraction of the two largest walls. Any available wall space appears to have been layered with signs and quirky decor from eras past, then covered in cheugy Halloween decorations. There were more flies than people in the dining room, and an ineffective fly-zapping lamp hung just feet above my husband's head as we dined. The unpleasant ambiance is unfortunate because the staff were incredibly attentive and pleasant. They appeared to enjoy their work. The food was standard café fare, quickly and well prepared. While nothing gourmet, I was pleased with what I ordered and consumed it quickly. I think this new dining option could be a great addition to our community, but an investment in interior design and a careful examination of sanitation would go a long way. read more
