A couple things contributing to this update. 1. We came for a Valentine's Day dinner because we love the filet mignon. Unfortunately, this time it was the size of a meatball. It took my husband 5 bites to finish his steak. We spent more time waiting than eating. 2. Decided to give it one more shot recently with family from out of town because it truly is beautiful and the food is good. We were served the wrong drinks then argued with about it, received a chicken thigh with 3 bites of meat on it (the menu states it's a breast), and just overall it was just disappointing. Beautiful view and delicious oysters! PROS: *Great customer service! I called about an hour ahead to make reservations for a party of 11 (9 adults and 2 toddlers) and the hostess was very accommodating and she was able to get us a great view. Our main server was attentive, fun, and engaging! The Rockfish team was so quick to bring out our food, refill our water, and clear our plates. *Raw Oysters are a must! I loved how fresh the oysters were and they had large portions. *Mezcal Flights - beautiful presentation and delicious! Their bartender was definitely not frugal with the tequila. It was worth it! Areas to Improve on: *The seafood paella was good but I was expecting it to be spicy or have a kick to it. Consider changing the sausage that's in the dish. However, I did appreciate the assortment of seafood from scallops, salmon, clams, shrimp, and more! *fisherman's platter- Consider putting larger pieces of fish. I had a few family members who also got the fisherman's platter and their fried fish was a lot larger than the one i my photo. *Not pictured - Mahi Mahi special- my mother got this and the fish was very dry she had to put a lot of hot sauce on it to make up for how dry it was. Lame. First, the waiter acted like I was a crackhead when I ordered the basket of garlic bread, which is the second item listed on their menu, both in the restaurant and posted outside. He acted as though I was speaking Orkan, even after I explained it was on the menu. Laughing at me like I'm an idiot, he finally gave me some excuse that they haven't bothered changing the menus after switching management eight months ago. Hey, Mr. Rockfish, CHANGE your MENU, or at least train your waiters to say, "Oh, please accept my grandest of apologies, sir, for that item you desire is no longer available despite being posted on our walls and menus, which we are too lazy and thoughtless to change" instead of acting like I farted milk out my eyes. Second, I know I shouldn't order a spicy chicken sandwich at a seafood place. That's like ordering sushi at a Texas BBQ. But that doesn't mean the sandwich gets an excuse to be a sad, measly, underwhelming sandwich. With the stingy amount of fries, the meal was insulting no matter the beautiful view. It could have been a view into Olivia Newton John's bathroom and still not be worth the $18. Despite the yummy blue cheese on my wife's wedge salad and my brother liking his oysters, if you made it to the end of the pier looking for a place to eat, turn back around wharf speed. read more

Happy Hour at the end of the pier doesn't disappoint! Crab was our theme tonight- Crab cakes, Crab Caesar Salad and Crab Louis! They were sensitive to my Gluten free restrictions and happy to serve. The old place got a new upgrade so everything is comfortable and clean. read more

First off, my impression of this place was good. My family and I wanted to try something new so we saw that this place wasn't too crowded on a weekend. We were greeted and seated us nicely. When the food was brought out it looked quite appetizing. However, after my one time experience here I will not be coming back. We waited for a good amount of time for the food to arrive, 30 mins minimum. When unraveling the napkins, the utensils inside were dirty. There were food bits on the spoon and fork?? We also asked for some extra spoons and bowls. When they brought it out, I picked up the bowl and the rim had food bits stuck to the sides. What in the world...So I politely asked, if we could get new ones since these were dirty and the waiter stacked the bowls loudly on the table and walked off. Now for the food. I was quite disappointed in the clam chowder considering this is Monterey. The chowder came out very mid and almost cold (not to mention there was a hair in my bowl). The seafood trio was okay, the salmon was still uncooked in the middle, forsure this isn't sashimi style. The calamari was decent. I know it's fried calamari but it wasn't as crispy and sitting in oil. The paella and steamed clams were okay, nothing too special. The waiter told us their Seafood paella was their special. Out of all, the firecracker shrimp was my favorite. I really wanted to like everything but food was just okay, everything came out at room temp. This restaurant has been a big disappointment since it remodeled and reopened a couple of years ago. We've been back twice (including today) and the food is very marginal and the service very lacking. The fried shrimp, fish, and calamari on the Captain's Platter were overcooked and the portions small. I'm a little suspicious that they are using frozen, pre-breaded seafood. The vinaigrette salad dressing tasted like it was just pure olive oil. If you want chowder, skip the bread bowl. It's tasteless, soft bread...like a big dinner roll. After walking around the wharf & looking at other restaurants & their specials, we came here & were happy. For starters, we had a great view of Monterey Bay & tour boats making their way around with friendly attentive service. The Monterey scampi is one of the best versions yet with suculent shrimp, tomatos, & mushrooms over rice in a white wine sauce. My mother & aunt enjoyed their entrees & my uncle said his calamari steak was a bit rubbery for him. But, rounded off the meal with pilsners & wine respectively & will be back. We decided to try this place because they had seating right by the water. So we can get the good view of the ocean. Service was good. We ordered fried calamari, crab cakes, clam chowder, tacos, and some lemonades. Honestly nothing had a good flavor or taste. Fried calamari quantity was very leass like small 8-10 pieces. It was fresh but not tasty. They had burnt the crab cakes from one side so ruined the whole taste. Clam chowder was ok but not best though. I am giving 2 stars for the ocean view. They took it back after I had already removed it. Not sure why. They could've just removed it from the bill. The grilled chicken and seafood sandwich was okay from what I was told. The only good thing I have to say about this restaurant is the view. Food portions are terrible considering the price. Raviolis are over $30 and only come with 7 raviolis, the shrimp cocktail is barely enough for 1 person. The soda was not carbonated. Our server forgot about our alcohol he had to be reminded and once he was reminded we watched him go to the computer and put it in. Do not come here if you have a group of people paying separately- server did not let us split the bill between 3 people and ended up with a gratuity already added to the bill of over $60 that was not deserved. read more

I can't even describe how bad the food was. I have the harbor seafood pasta, my pasta was clumped up. The seafood had no flavor. My husband had the seafood platter, and it looked disgusting. My sister had the seafood cioppino, and she said it was the worst she's ever had. Best thing we're the kids fries. read more

I'm giving 5 stars for a few reasons: #1 The service was GREAT. Our server and his assistant were so attentive. He was very deliberate, patient and kind and such an awesome personality. I wish I could remember his name to give him a shout out. He had dark complexion, dark medium length hair, average/slender build and glasses (if that helps narrow him down at all for management to give him some kudos). He really was the best! #2 Most of the food was very very good. The chowder was excellent, the sourdough bread was perfect, the tacos were good. The lobster pasta was not good, it had an excessive amount of soy sauce or something and was not edible. I had one bite and stopped. I did not bring it to the servers attention because he was so sweet and I just couldn't bring myself to tell him it was bad lol. I just stole my husbands taco and made due with the delicious bread. #3 The ambiance and view were great. We saw seals from the windows. It was very comfortable and clean in the restaurant. This is a lovely place to grab lunch if you're visiting Old Fisherman's Wharf in Monterrey. It's at the end of a pier and has panoramic views. I even managed to see two sea otters in the middle of my meal! I personally ordered the Shrimp Salad Sandwich which I thought was reasonably priced. The shrimp and vegetables were fresh and delicious, and the fries were crisp and nice too. It wasn't too busy around 1:30-2:30pm on a Saturday afternoon, although it may be because I visited on a colder winter day. I also tried the Rockfish Tacos and Swordfish Steak--both were great, and again, I loved that I could tell the seafood was incredibly fresh. I'd recommend this place for couples or friends who are looking for a relaxing, low-key meal by the water. read more

My wife and I were visiting after having been away for 33 years (lived there in 1989), AND were there for our 30th anniversary, so we had to get in all the tourist stuff. I have seen some negative reviews for the food, but I have to respectfully disagree. We had a fantastic time! Now, in Monterey, just as in any coastal city, the one thing that should be lacking is the seafood. Rockfish has a fine selection and it was prepared well. The view is amazing! The adult beverage options are unique and the mezcal flight was amazing. 100% recommended and we will make a point to return on our next visit (which won't be another 30+ years) . read more

Visiting the wharf and just had lunch here. The wedge salad was absolutely amazing and would easily feed two people. I'm so sorry I didn't take pictures as I always do, I just totally forgot this time! Also had the cheese garlic bread and my husband a very generous garden salad and Panko breaded, prawns with fries, it was also amazing. Very generous serving. I can't say enough about our server Fernando! He was happy, polite, personable, and always made sure we had refills or anything else we needed. Our one and only complaint was the attitude of the short older man that brought out our food. He insinuated this couldn't be for two people because it was too much food which kind of made us feel like we were being judged by the amount of food we ordered as if we were a bit piggish but other than that the place was absolutely amazing and I highly recommend it. Solid place to eat. The crab cakes were pretty good with the sauce that was drizzled around them. My cocktail got me a bit tipsy and went down very smoothy. Didn't see our waiter for the first 5 minutes or so but once he showed he was a cool dude. I ordered the crab and shrimp ravioli for my entree and it didn't disappoint. It came with mushrooms and generally I don't care for mushrooms but you could hardly taste them in all the ravioli sauce which was clutch. Went in on a Saturday night and it was surprisingly empty, very quiet. It almost felt kind of awkward to have all the staff just waiting around haha. We got a nice seat by the water. Ok so this one is a hard one. I really wanted to like it. The view from our table was outstanding. The restaurant is very nice , new decor that is very inviting. The service was also friendly. The place was pretty empty so that made me a little weary ... The. Overall the place failed to deliver. I'm trying my best to not be to critical for things out of the restaurants control. One of my least favorite thing that kinda killed my experience was with so many open tables we got sat right next to another group and then had a table sat right behind us. The people who got sat right behind us dropped a huge silent but deadly fart that made me want to throw up prior to us getting our food. To those people you can go fly at kite. Ok so the food. We got the calamari apatizer, it was super tough and rubbery. I usually get calamari and this was my least favorite, also had a uneven fry on it. Some of the breading was crispy some was soggy. I got the fishermen's pasta. It was ok, again the calamari was gross. The fish that was in the dish was the star. Very good fish. The pasta was fine but the white wine sauce was bland. My wife did order the rockfish tacos and they were pretty solid. Overall I would not recommend this place with so many better options near it. read more

I usually don't do reviews but had to do this one. Our waiter (Oscar) confused one of our orders and told us he would not take the dish back and sat it down on the table and just left. I told him I wanted to see the manager, he went away for a good 15 minutes and returned just to ask us if the manager came by??? which never happened. Then he asked if I wanted the untouched dish at that point and was told no, he took it back and that was that. Never saw a manager and I am not sure he even informed his manager of the problem. The price of the dish was not included in the bill but the way the situation was handled was very poor and reflective of the management and the establishment. Our table was short one plate and not enough food for the people at the table, we left unhappy and of course did not leave any gratuity. Overall a terrible experience. The food, steaks and pasta received mixed reviews from our party however our food was good. We started with the crab artichoke gratin that was great, needed a bit more seasoning but great ingredients. We then had clam chowder and that was excellent. The food we ordered (garlic clams, shrimp cocktail, clam chowder, shrimp scampi, and whole dungeness crab) was tasteless and lackluster. Went on a trip with my boyfriend and wanted a to check out a good seafood place. We were unsure at first as we're not super familiar with what's good in Monterey but we thoroughly enjoyed eating and our experience here. We got seats right on the water and got to see all the sea life while we were eating which definitely added to the fancy atmosphere while still staying pretty casual. The food wasn't as pricy as some of its neighboring restaurants on the pier which was nice as well. We got clams on the side as well as a the central coast cioppino entree which were both delicious! The soup/broth that the seafood was cooked in was honestly our favorite part. The fish all tasted great and super fresh as well. And when we asked if something had gluten in it (gluten intolerance) our waiter took it upon himself to separate the bread from the entrees for us which was greatly appreciated. Pro: Restaurant has the best view on the pier Cons: Pretty much all aspects a restaurant needs to have a good experience. In short, food is edible (mediocre at best) and overpriced, drinks are watered down and the service staff is rude and slow. Save yourself the trouble - enjoy the free view upstairs and have lunch anywhere else on the pier. I personally recommend old fisherman's grotto for their delicious chowder, baked oysters and seafood pasta. Don't say I didn't warn you! read more
