I was in town to visit a friend and awoke early, so rather than making a bunch of noise in their small house, I meandered downtown with my laptop and discovered Rocking Horse. I ordered a delish white mocha, nommed on a freshly baked muffin, and topped it off with a personal-sized pan of their incredibly tasty quiche. What put this place at the top of my coffee list, though, was the impeccable service. So friendly, and so welcoming - even as the early morning line of customers grew and grew. My fiancé's family has a cabin in Winthrop, and the Rocking Horse Bakery has always been one of our favorite spots to sit and enjoy a warm drink and a treat, especially in the winter. Today, I ordered a cinnamon roll and a chai tea latte. My fiancé ordered a drip coffee and a vegetable panini. The cinnamon rolls are always huge and delicious, and today did not disappoint. The staff are super friendly here. They accidentally made me a latte instead of a chai latte, but quickly were able to make me a new chai latte with no problem. We enjoyed our drinks while watching the snow fall outside the window. There's lots of seating, making it a great sport to camp with a book or journal for a couple hours. I love this place! It can be busy on the weekends, but the staff handles it well. They have a decent amount of seating in different areas, and the back end gives a view of the river. They have a couple of flavors, and we chose one with mushrooms. I fell in love with their cookies. I took home one of each flavor they had, and they were like homemade from Mom's oven. Their scrambles are also premade and heated in their microwave upon ordering. They have cold sandwiches as well as some paninis. I didn't order any of those, but assume they will grill them once ordered. Most of the employees seemed to be local teens, which I thought was pretty cool. Cons- the breakfast sandwich I had along with their cinnamon pull apart muffin were quite dry. The sandwich could have used an aioli or a grilled tomato, that would have helped with the dryness. Pull apart muffin would have been better warmed up. Another con- the chai I ordered was a premade chai that you can buy from any grocery store... I know cause I usually buy it from our local Safeway. Oliver's just down the street has better drinks that start with an in-house chai blend or a in-house chocolate ganache, which make their drinks way better! Solid place to get coffee. We had 5 of their baked goods over the course of our weekend stay. All were decent, the breads of the goods were just a little dry, the carrot cake was great. Service is efficient with no rush behind the counter which was nice. Overall solid place for a cuppa. read more

When we visited RHB it was on a weekday both days, but we skipped it on Saturday because it was packed! So as far as I know, we had two great days of food and service! I ADORE this spot, I was staying up at Sun Mountain Resort and found myself visiting 3 times while in the area. The panini's available after 11am were my go to worth the 6ish minute wait, took them for lunch on my hikes! I also enjoyed the chai latte and coffee. Oh and the moon pies! Yelp showed me some awesome photos of cinnamon rolls, which made me want to visit the Rocking Horse. The cinnamon roll was definitely worthy of the stop. So, if you need a reason to stop - that's it. We ended up stoping at the Rocking Horse Bakery both mornings that we were in Winthrop and the place was always busy, but the line moved swiftly and the staff was very friendly. Even with a long-ish line, they were eager to answer patron questions and advise on which breakfast sandwiches were the best. I didn't personally find my Chai Latte to be that stimulating; it was a bit watery for my taste, but the hot drink in the cool morning was perfection. However, I did enjoy the breakfast burrito and the breakfast sandwich. If I were to choose, I would point you to the breakfast burrito, it had a great flavor and was not messy to eat. The sandwich was also good, but the biscuit left tons of crumbs. But, the highlight was the cold chicken pesto sandwich. Rocking horse bakery is a good place to go for coffee and more in Winthrop. They make good coffee, which is the number one requirement for a cafe. They also have excellent baked goods. Last time I tried both the cinnamon roll and the carrot cake. Both scrumptious. I also had a tuna sandwich and a breakfast burrito. They were both perfectly acceptable but nothing special. tl;dr - delicious breakfast, quick service, open early My friends and I went to hike Maple Pass. We stayed the night in Winthrop and planned to head out early the next morning. We choose Rocking Horse because they're open at 7am, even on Sunday. When we arrived, there was a line that was out the door. We weren't sure if we had time to wait, but we're glad we waited because the line moves really fast. I had a sausage breakfast sandwich and it really hit the spot for breakfast. It had a generous portion of hot fluffy egg and was on a soft moist biscuit. I also picked up a sandwich for lunch on the hike. The online menu had a delicious looking selection of sandwiches, but at the time they only offered what was in the deli case. I split a turkey and a tuna sandwich with my wife which tasted great after hiking for 4 hours. The only thing I wished was that the sandwich was packaged a bit more robustly than just plastic wrap. Stopped in the Rocking Horse and found some ready made sandwiches to go. The sandwiches they sell come in different varieties and are individually named. I think the sandwich I had was the Balky Mountain. It was smoked ham, cheese with Dijon mustard. It had the standard sandwich trimmings as well. It was very good. They also have baked goods of course. I bought two of what they call carrot cakeletts. They had cream cheese frosting. Oh man they were so good. So good I went back to buy more the next day. Rocking Horse is in Winthrop, WA, a beautiful town on the eastern side of the Cascade mountains. It's hard to tell where the town officially begins, but the historical part doesn't start until you cross the river. Then, you will see shops and restaurants lined up in well maintained historical buildings. It appears to only be one street because on either side of the street the nature begins, with dry grasses on one side and a river full of tubers on the other side. We watched these tubers float down the river as we ate our sandwiches on Rocking Horse's back deck. Rocking Horse had a wide array of baked goods for sale, knowing that many people are driving to Winthrop from the western side of the mountains and are there for lunch, not breakfast. There are sandwiches and pizza, in addition to more typical breakfast fare. They also have an artfully decorated interior, with boats and bicycles dangling from the ceiling. I've always appreciated the look of old sporting goods dangling from the rafters, as a way to bring history and the outdoors inside, but also, it's hard to avert your eyes for a large, suspended wooden boat. While I appreciated that the sandwich satiated my appetite, I think that the bakers should return to the drawing board to create a better panini. Maybe they created a good sandwich but didn't realize that squashing it in between two hot plates didn't improve it. The back patio had nice views of the river. read more

This is a must visit breakfast place at Winthrop, along the banks of the Methow river. They do have seating alongside the river, which was lovely on a sunny day! We got their cinnamon rolls, Chipotle southwest chicken sandwich, Veggie Panini, and grabbed their breakfast burritos and Chipotle southwest chicken salad for the road. Their cinnamon rolls were too good, and their Chipotle southwest chicken was really yummy (both sandwich and salad). Their Breakfast burritos were okay, and my friend liked her Veggie Panini too! Note: If you are staying at Winthrop and are heading into North Cascades National Park in the morning, then this might be the only place in the area with a lot of packed sandwich options to pick up, when you are heading out to explore the park. read more

We're staying at the Sun Mountain lodge but due to covid-19 their breakfast menu is pretty limited. Super glad to have found this bakery! They carry a variety of breakfast options: breakfast sandwich, quiche, assorted pastries, muffins and baked goods. The coffee was my favorite part because WOW, IT WAS GOOD. The Espresso Bar had a huge menu, options for kids and adults both, delicious flavored syrups and several styles of coffee to choose from. I got an iced peppermint latte and it was sheer perfection. The syrup didn't overpower the flavor of espresso and the ice:milk ratio was spot on. I definitely plan on going back for another latte before we head back to Seattle! The barista was super sweet as well. We ordered a cinnamon roll, cheddar and chive scone, and 2 peach blueberry muffins. For drinks, we got an iced peppermint latte, chai lattes and a cappuccino. The drinks were delicious and the cinnamon roll and muffins were pretty yummy while the scone was meh.
